Production of oil by expansion from a cylindrical reservoir composed of two concentric regions of different properties has been determined as a function of time for a reservoir producing at constant terminal pressure. The parameters involved are permeability, porosity, compressibility and oil viscosity. Results agree with those of a generally accepted method for uniform reservoirs when all parameters are taken as uniform. Cumulative production at any given time is reduced below that of the uniform reservoir when a region of considerably lower permeability adjoins the well; cumulative production increases when a high-permeability region adjoins the well. Curves are presented illustrating quantitative effects of these variations. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be exploited by release of pressure and consequent expansion of underground fluid. During part of the production history of certain reservoirs by this mechanism, fluid compressibility can be considered small and constant. Cumulative fluid produced by this means as a function of time was calculated for a uniform reservoir by van Everdingen and Hurst.l For certain cases where a production well has been damaged or where an acid treatment has been used, a zone of properties different from those of the reservoir may be created around the production well. In such a case, expansion of the reservoir fluid takes place in a system composed of two concentric cylindrica1 regions of different reservoir properties. Such composite systems were studied in connection with heat flow by Jaeger2 who presented a solution for temperature distribution in a radial system with an infinitely large outer radius. Similar heat flow problems have been studied by other authors Oil production from composite reservoirs was studied for constant production rate by Hurst,4 Loucks and Guerrero,5 and Carter.6 THEORY This work considers constant terminal pressure. Cumulative flow is calculated for a composite bounded system in which no flow takes place across the outer boundary (Fig. 1). Since the flow is considered to be purely radial, the problem involves only one space dimension and time. It is convenient to define the following dimen-sionless pressure drops (Fig. 1).

Two Alco 3 ½ -ton motor trucks were used by Young Bros. while operating at the Mammoth Collins mine at Shultz, Ariz. One was equipped with an oil tank holding 1,075 gal. and was used for the transportation of "tops." The, other was fitted with a stake body and used to carry machinery, wood, rails, pipe and all classes of miscellaneous supplies. The bodies were made of oak with maple flooring and were attached to the frame of the chassis by U-bolts, to avoid drilling the main members of the frame. Most of the hauling was done from Tucson, a distance of 47;2 miles. During the first. 3 months, part of the road was in very bad condition and the tire cost was excessive. After this part was repaired the road was in fair condition, but never good. There were no excessive grades or bad sand, but wagon ruts, too narrow for the truck wheels and of a different gage, caused heavy tire loss; while chuck holes, sharp curves and stones, both imbedded and loose, were objectionable features. During wet weather the trucks could not get sufficient traction to climb some of the hills and were likely to stick in the mud in certain places, so that no attempt was made to run them unless they were on the road when the rain started. This lost time amounted to about 5 per cent. of the total, but, whenever possible, it was utilized in making minor repairs. The price of gasoline, was from 17 to 21 c. per gal. Rubber tires were used throughout. Drivers were paid $4.50 to $5 per shift, and a return trip to Tucson was counted as two shifts even when made in one day. Drivers were provided with a room in Tucson and were paid for all time lost due to causes beyond their control. Trucks were loaded one way only.

From the inception of zinc retorting on a commercial scale in the United States in 1890,' the retort employed has undergone wide variations in its composition and manufacture, facilitating in part equally remarkable improvements in furnace capacities. The early day hand made clay retort was charged with carbonates or silicates or with coarse dead roasted concentrates mixed with a large proportion of charge fuel resulting in a relatively low zinc burden and fired 24 hr in direct coal fired furnaces. Its modern counterpart is fabricated in hydraulic presses from clay mixtures containing sizeable amounts of either silicon carbide or silica flour, charged with sintered flotation concentrates to more than three times the early day zinc burden and fired 24 to 48 hr in gas fired furnaces. This paper does not attempt to describe in detail the early day clay retort practice as it is well outlined in treatises by Ingalls,2 Lodin,3 Liehig,4 Hofman5 and others. A brief review of clay retort practice is presented together with a description of the major developments since 1912. Clay Retorts The Belgian type retort, both in the circular and elliptical forms, has been used almost exclusively. Typical dimensions of press made clay retorts around 1910 are shown in Table 1. Variations in these dimensions were used at different plants according to local conditions to a maximum inside diameter of 9 in. and inside length of 54 in. However, the effective heat penetration in a 24 hr firing cycle and the tendency of the retort to bend limited the retort size. Use of the elliptical vessel was an attempt to present a stronger cross-section resisting the tendency to bend and to increase the burden without increasing the depth of heat penetration. One exception to the 48-54 in. length was the 60 in. retort used as early as 1905 at Palmerton by means of supporting the last 12 in. at the butt end with a specially designed furnace back-wall. This backwall construction with the 60 in. retort had been developed and used at Bethlehem by G. G. Con-vers and A. B. DeSaulles. An attempt was made at Blende, Colo. to use even larger retorts of the Rhenish type based on European practice and requiring much higher furnace temperatures. Satisfactory plastic clays capable of withstanding these temperatures were not available, and the plant never operated successfully. PREPARATION OF BATCH Composition of the clay retort by weight was 40 to 50 pct raw clay and the balance "grog." Generally speaking the mix consisted of 7 parts plastic clay to 9 parts grog by volume. Principal source of the clay used was the Cheltenham vein—sometimes referred to as "St. Louis city clay." A typical analysis was A12O3-31.0 pct, SiO2-50.0 pct, Fe2O3-2.5 pct, MgO-0.3 pct, CaO-1.5 pct and loss on ignition 14.0 pct. At the smelter the clay was weathered whenever possible and then crushed to 0.08 in. or finer. Grog consisted of calcined adobies, cleaned retort scrap and cleaned refuse fire brick such as old furnace brick, blast furnace linings, and others. Saggers from ceramic plants and calcined flint clay were later used. The grog materials were ground to 0.12 m. or finer. Occasionally coke dust up to 10 pct of the mix was substituted for a part of the grog following European practice.² Particle size of the grog has a major influence on the retort properties—the larger the grain, the better can the retort withstand thermal shocks, resist bending at furnace temperatures and resist corrosion from slag; the smaller the grain, the lower the loss of zinc vapor through the retort walls. Grog forms the skeleton of the retort, and the clay shrinks around its grains to act as a binder. In the drying process, the grog has a stabilizing effect on the drying rate, decreasing shrinkage and giving up previously absorbed water to the surrounding clay to minimize the danger of cracking or checking.² Grog and clay were mixed through a horizontal pug mill with 10 to 20 pct water added, depending on whether the retort was to be formed by hand or mechanically, more water being required for the hand process. The batch or "mud" extruded from the pug mill was cut in convenient lengths for handling, stacked in piles or in special rooms, covered with wet burlap and allowed to "rot" or age from 1 to 8 weeks to increase plasticity. HAND MOLDING If the retort was to be molded by hand, the mud was repugged after the rotting period and given to the molders. Their molds consisted of 3 sheet iron or wood cylinders, each one third the retort length and defining the outer shape of the retort. THE use of natural feldspathic rocks, as opposed to straight feldspar, for ceramic purposes is not new. "Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been made on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent ceramic grade.

The extractive mineral industries share a number of common characteristics and basic problems which are completely different from those associated with manufacturing and mercantile operations. These industries now supply about 95% of the inanimate energy consumed in this country, and share with agriculture in providing virtually all of our basic raw materials. Mineral producers, like farmers, are subject to the economic hazards of fluctuating markets and prices. Unlike farmers, however, they cannot renew the productivity of the earth, but must seek continually for new sources of supply. The necessity for exploration and development of new reserves, to replace those used up by production, introduces additional factors of economic risk. These operations require the expenditure of large amounts of capital, often well in advance of any assurance of profitability. Commercial banks that understand these special problems can provide a variety of constructive financial services to the mineral industries. The history of cooperation between banks and mining enterprises has yet to be written, but there is every indication that it would encompass a period of hundreds of years. Records refer to depository and lending services by the early European private bankers involving precious metals and jewels. Many of the exploratory voyages to the Far East and the New World were organized with the financial backing of wealthy syndicates, some of which also provided banking services, in the hope of finding new sources of gold and other precious minerals. In the United States many large banks are closely identified with the development of some of the larger mineral deposits such as the Mesabi Range and the gold fields of California.

Just a few years ago, my company was referred to as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. Though we still make shovels, both two and eight-crawler types, the eight-crawler stripping shovel appears to have been replaced by the walking dragline for overburden removal and in some cases for the mineral as well. The walking dragline appeared in the coal fields in the early 1930's. It is popular because it can cope with overburden depths in excess of 100 ft and with blasted sedimentary rock, all at an O & O (ownership and operational) cost of ±10[c] per bank cu yd (bcy).

AN excerpt from the Odessa Isvestia Vechernia, dated April 24, 1927, and translated by P. Routzitzky, summarizes a report by Professor Preobragensky ad-dressed to the Russian Government. Professor Preo-bragensky writes in regard to newly discovered potash deposits in eastern European Russia. Near Solikamsk in the Perm district, about 100 miles east of the Ural mountains and on the Kama river, large deposits have been located and the belt has been traced southward about 25 miles. Subsequently the search for potash salts has been transferred to the Berezovsky district, near Nikolsk, on the Kosva river, about 70 miles north-east-of the city of Perm. Toward the end of March, 1927, at a depth of 800 ft., drilling at the Levensk salt works revealed potash salts in, definite strata. The bed has a thickness which extends from a depth of- 245 to 307 meters (latest data in middle of April, 1927) and has not been bottomed yet. Professor Preobragensky goes on to say that these operations have definitely, developed very large de-posits, the limits of which are still unknown. There is at least an implication that the reserves far exceed those of Stassfurt, Germany. For European use they are, of course, much less accessible, for by through rail they lie 1200 miles east of Petrograd. Further, no particulars are given as to the potash content. It is to be supposed that the salt occurs in the Permian beds that extend north and south along the west flank of the Ural mountains, as the localities mentioned .all lie within the area so mapped on the new geologic map of Russia issued by the Scientific and Technical Di-vision of the All-Russian Council of Soviets in 1922. It is interesting to note that these salt beds are of the same geologic age as those of 'the Stassfurt region and of the west Texas-New Mexico district, in which the U. S. Bureau of Mines is at present drilling.

The subject of the mechanism of sintering has received much attention in the past few years, particularly since the beginning of the series of AIME seminars in powder metallurgy of which this paper introduces the fourth. In the first of these, F. N. Rhines1 brought together and discussed the available experimental data on the sintering of pure metallic powder, and succeeded in bringing to a sharp focus the attention of workers in this field on the established observations which a satisfactory theory must explain. Several other authors3,5,6 have, in the last few years, studied the phenomena that occur when cold metallic powders, loose or in the form of compacts, are first brought to elevated temperatures. Some workers' in the field of friction have recently studied the adhesion of solid metal surfaces when they are brought into close contact. These researches have indicated that several separate mechanisms operate simultaneously, at least during the first part of the sintering process. Some of them have been called transient mechanisms4 because they are in general not absolutely necessary to sintering. Powders may be so prepared and so treated that these transient phenomena do not take place during subsequent sintering. This does not mean, of course, that their industrial and scientific importance is any less than that of the steady-state phenomena. The latter are changes that go on during sintering no matter how the powders are made or treated; they cannot be divorced from sintering. One way to analyze the process of sintering into its component parts is perhaps to distinguish between these transient and steady-state phenomena. Some of the transient phenomena have been studied in the past few years. Huttig3 has shown that, when the temperature of metallic powder is slowly raised, the following events generally occur in order: (1) physically adsorbed gases are desorbed; (2) there is an atomic rearrangement of the surface, a sort of two-dimensional "surface-reciystallization"; (3) there is a breakdown of chemically adsorbed surface compounds; (4) there is a recrystalliza-tion in the volume of the metal. All these changes are shown by Huttig and his coworkers to be completed fairly rapidly at lower temperatures than those generally used in sintering and are therefore not a part of the mechanism whereby the density of a mass of powder continues to change after long heating at an elevated temperature. But the first and third of these changes release gases in quantities which may or may not help to control the steady-state mechanisms, depending on when the voids become isolated from the outside of the compact. Among the phenomena studied by Steinberg and Wulff,8 there is the effect on sintering of residual stresses arising from the pressing operation. They found that the lateral surfaces of a green compact of iron are under a longitudinal residual tension-stress of the order of magnitude of half the yield-point for solid iron. If the outside surface is in tension, the core must be under longitudinal compression. When the compact is heated, the surface residual stress is thermally relieved first, and the compact therefore initially expands in the direction of its axis. This is a transient phenomenon, if for no other reason than the possibility of sintering unpressed powders, as demonstrated by Delisle,9 Libsch, Volterra and Wulff10 and others.1 The subject of recrystallization is dealt with further in a separate section, in view of its prominent place in sintering literature. It, too. is one of these transient phenomena. Among the steady-state parts there may be distinguished the attraction between particles and its consequences, the spheroidization of voids in the compacts, and the densification or swelling of the compact. There is considerable evidence4,7 showing that cold metallic surfaces, when brought to within a few interatomic distances of one another, are attracted to each other by forces of the order of many thousands of pounds per square inch. A calculation, discussed in greater detail in another section, shows that this force changes but slightly when the temperature of the surfaces approaches the melting point. Actual measurements of forces of adhesion of this magnitude have been made by Bradley12 on some nonmetals, but none has yet been made on cold or hot metals. This force is of sufficient magnitude to cause some plastic deformation in powder compacts, as will be shown below. A second force of steady-state nature is due to the surface tension, which probably has the same origin as the force of attraction between surfaces.164 A paper by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff1,3 gives the results of precise direct measurements of its value for solid copper. The demonstration of the tendency for the surface tension to shrink a pore was long ago given by Gibbs.17 He showed that its effect on a curved surface between two phases is equivalent to a pressure perpendicular to that

In this paper, as prepared for delivery at the Southern California regional meeting on Oct. 14, 1948, it was thought best to interpret the term "economics" in a rather broad manner and to include, in addition to the material losses and recoveries and associated monetary values (Part I), a limited discussion of the increased difficulties or the particular problem and the special requirements, as the particle sizes of the suspended particles range down from the relatively coarse to 100, to 10, to 1 micron or even to a fraction of one micron (Part II). Further, it is not quite in order to overlook entirely the community and individual health problems, although space requires the economics of this to be considered only very incompletely. Therefore, Part III, covering this phase of the subject, is very limited. This paper, then, is divided into 5 parts or headings as follows: I Losses and/or values in suspended solids. II Particle size. III Dust and fumes in community and individual living. IV Means and Procedures for dust and fume collection. V Description or examples of specific equipment in service and of the several types used for dust and fume collection. Because of the wide extent and wealth of subject material available and the space and time limitation imposed, presentation and discussion are less than originally planned. I—Losses and/or Values in Suspended Solids The weight involved in moving streams of industrial plant gases is commonly not appreciated, neither is their carrying power in the weight of solids maintained in suspension and moved with the gas stream from a point of origin or pick-up to a point of dissipation or settlement. These, however, are major weight figures; for example, in a modern iron blast furnace there may be five tons of gas for every ton of iron produced and by the time this blast furnace gas has been burned in stoves or under boilers the weight of gas discharged to atmosphere is on the order of eight times the weight of iron produced. Similarly for nonferrous metallurgy there may readily be from 10 to 20 times the weight of gases discharged to atmosphere as there is metal produced. A cement kiln in operation or a kiln in service to produce metallurgical lime may have on the order of 5 to 6 times the weight of stack gases as of clinker or lime produced, and at least the cement kiln, because of the very fine nature of its feed, is a very heavy dust producer. It may be noted that there have been two developments in progress for nearly three decades. Both are extraordinary in the industrial economics effected and in their ready availability to ever larger units of operation and their ever widening importance in industry, and both are productive of great quantities of finely divided material in furnacing. The first of these is the flotation process for ores, especially the metallics such as copper, lead, and zinc; and the second, powdered fuel combustion for power plant, industrial plants and metallurgical operations. Today, new developments, for example, flotation for the nonmetallics such as higher grade limestone for cement manufacture which requires still finer grinding and the powdered-coal-fired boilers with production ratings of over 1,000,000 lb of steam per hr, bring still more concentrated and hugely increased quantities of stack emission. Perhaps the honors for the greatest interest in the quantities and values escaping in waste furnace and equipment gases belong to the nonferrous metallurgical operations. Their record of achievement in the installation of dust and fume collection equipment, largely baghouses or Cottrell electrical precipitators, is exceeded by no other industry. Something of the magnitude and variety of equipment utilized in such recovery systems was covered by the writer in two papers presented to the Institute some 10 years ago.1,2 It is not intended to repeat the material of those articles, but it is thought that they complement this offering and should be noted. COPPER ROASTERS As the copper roasters are the first of the series of furnaces handling the copper-bearing concentrates in the usual copper smelter of today, it is in order to make them the first consideration. Multiple hearth sulphide roasters, not hard driven, often maintain their dust loss through exit gases at 3 pet or below of feed to furnace; in hard-driven or maximum-driven furnaces, exit gas losses often approximate 7 pet of charge with a ±2 pet variation for special conditions prevailing at some plants. A 5 pet loss of feed in a roaster gas exit, unless reclaimed, often makes the difference between a profit and loss operation, and in many cases substantial recovery is the very basis of dividend payments. The effect of strain rate and temperature on the tensile flow stress of a polycrystalline bcc alloy of magnesium containing 14 wt pct Li and 1.5 wt pct Al was investigated for strain rates of 3.13 x lom5 to 3.13 x 10-3 per sec over the range from 20° to 300°K. From about 180° to 300°K the alloy exhibited an ather-ma1 deformation behavior where the flow stress was independent of strain rate and increased only slightly with decreasing temperature. At lower temperatures the flow stress was strongly strain-rate- and temperature-dependent, characteristic of deformations controlled by thermally activated mechmzisms. The activation volume for thermally activated plastic defornzation was between 5 and 30 cu Burgers vectors, independent of plastic strain. This low-temperature thermally activated deformation behavior was found lo be in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical dictates of the Dorn-Rajnak1 formulation of the Peierls mechanism where deformation is controlled by the rate of nucleation of pairs of dislocation kinks over the Peierls energy barriers. SEVERAL studies of the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals and alloys (molybdenum,1 tantalum,1 Fe-2 pct Mn,2 Fe-11 pct MO,3 and AgMg4) have revealed that the strain rate is controlled by the activation of dislocations over the Peierls-Nabarro energy hills. Although there is some uncertainty as to the nature and effect of solute atom-dislocation interactions during low-temperature deformation of bcc metals, it has been concluded by Dorn and Rajnak,1 Conrad,1 and Christian and Masters6 among others that overcoming the Peierls-Nabarro stress which arises from the variations in bond energies of atoms in the dislocation core as it is displaced is the probable mechanism controlling low-temperature deformation. The purpose of this research was to investigate the low-temperature plastic deformation of the bcc alloy Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct A1 to determine if the behavior of this alkali metal alloy might be analogous to that for other bcc metals. This alloy was selected because of its availability and its current industrial importance as a lightweight material for aircraft and aerospace applications. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Polycrystalline tensile specimens having cylindrical gage sections 2 in. long by 0.2 in. in diam were machined from as-received alloy sheet stock of Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct Al. Specimens were annealed in an argon atmosphere at 423°K for 4 hr and maintained in a kerosene bath together with the sheet stock to prevent corrosion. The resulting specimen microstructure consisted of a coarse uniform dispersion of incoherent precipitate MgLi2Al particles7 in a bcc 0 phase matrix having an average grain size of 150 p. Prior to testing the specimens were chemically polished in dilute hydrochloric acid. Comparison of tensile properties and microstructures of specimens cut from center and edge sections of the sheet stock revealed no effects of inhomogeneities in the sheet material. Tensile tests were performed on an Instron machine at crosshead speeds corresponding to tensile strain rates of 1.56 x 10-5 and 1.56 x 10"3 per sec. Stresses were determined to ±2 x 106 dynes per sq cm and strains to within ±0.0001. Average values of shear stress t and shear strain y reported were taken as one half the tensile stress and three halves the tensile strain, respectively. Flow stresses were taken at 0.05 pct strain offset. Test temperatures down to 77°K were obtained by immersing the specimens in constant-temperature baths. Lower-temperature tests were performed in a liquid helium cryostat to within ±2°K of the reported values. Prior to testing at the various temperatures and strain rates all specimens were prestrained at 2 35°K at a shear strain rate of 3.13 x 10-5 per sec to a stress level of 0.606 x 10' dynes per sq cm to obtain a uniform initial state. Additional tests were made to determine the effect of changes in strain rate and strain on the flow stress by rapidly changing the crosshead motion during testing. Shear moduli of elasticity, needed for analyses of the data, were obtained at several temperatures by a common technique of determining the resonant frequencies of vibrations of rectangular test specimens. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the experimentally determined flow stress vs temperature for two strain rates. Two distinct regions of behavior are evident. Below about 180°K the strong increase in flow stress with increased strain rate and decreasing temperature indicates that deformation is controlled by a thermally activated dislocation mechanism. At higher temperatures an athermal region is evident where the flow stress is independent of strain rate and only slightly dependent on temperature. J. Bruce Clemmer, J. B. Rosenbaum, and C. H. Schack (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City)—We have watched with considerable interest Three Kids development of Manganese Inc. and have been impressed by the ingenuity with which management and staff have solved their many obstinate handling problems. Mr. McCarroll has been lenient in describing the difficulties faced by the company in developing a process for beneficiating Three Kids ore. The operation, equivalent in size to a 20,000-ton sulphide ore plant, is treating a unique ore by a flotation process pioneered by Manganese Inc. Perhaps the magnitude of the conditioning and flotation problems peculiar to Three Kids ore can be better appraised when it is pointed out that two-thirds to three-fourths of the ore is floated in the rougher step and that the four stages of cleaning which follow are equivalent to floating the whole plant feed two to three times. Our experience in both laboratory and pilot plant flotation of Three Kids and other manganese ores leads us to agree with Mr. McCarroll that suitable conditioning is a prime requisite for successful oil-emulsion flotation. The difficulties of proper conditioning were demonstrated in pilot plant processing of Artillery Peak manganese ore at our Boulder City, Nev., experiment station. Over three months of experiments and extensive plant revision were required before satisfactory conditioning was obtained in the 25-ton-per-day plant. INTRODUCTION How often has the thoughtful observer pondered the apparent contradictions experienced in the weather? One can take records of two days, one in the winter and one in the summer. The "degree days" indicate that space heating and domestic load were present in one case and not in the other. The Business Index may be about the same, indicating that the industrial activity of the area and its concomitant use of fuel were about the same. Thus the volume of the products of combustion released to the atmosphere varied only as related to the space heating demand. Yet on one day in winter the atmosphere may be clear and bracing, while on a summer's day the air is thick and murky and the visibility sharply reduced. The situation may be reversed. What are some of the factors that contribute to the creation of these conditions? These few notes have been prepared to indicate some of the influences that are exerted on the problem. THE SOURCES OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION The industrial area of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a dominant center for the production of iron and steel for over one hundred years. In fact, with the growth of the numerous auxiliary processes Allegheny County which contains Pittsburgh is probably the most industrialized county in the world. In addition, the type of manufacture carried out in this area is predominant dependent on thermal energy (heat). That energy is supplied from coke and coal produced in the vicinity of Pittsburgh. Indicative of the stupendous quantities of fuel that are employed in this industrial area's economy, the following (Table No. taken from the U. S. Census (1940) may I of interest. An influence that has never been fully appreciated by many individuals is the fact that no matter what adventures the gases of combustion experience as they pass through the various processes, ulti¬mately the spent gases are discharged through chimneys to the atmosphere.

Last November, when the British Educational Mission was visiting this country, letters were sent to the various mining schools asking what arrangements had been made for cooperating with British and. French schools. Of the eleven schools from which replies were received, none had taken any definite steps in this direction. The Colorado School of Mines, though, stated that it was offering scholarships to all men who had served in the U. S. Army and Navy during the war. A letter was also sent to Sir Henry Miers, Vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, who was the head of the British Mission. He replied as follows: "In my opinion the mining profession is second to none in the responsibility of the duties which it involves or to which it leads in all parts of the world; also it is a. profession in which the student or teacher has much to gain by migrating to foreign countries. This applies in a special degree to British students coming to America where they will be able to enlarge their views by a widened experience. We (the Mission) have everywhere found the most, cordial acceptance of such proposals. Several of the British Universities have recently instituted a new doctorate of philosophy attainable after 2 or 3 years course of advanced study; this scheme includes Oxford and Manchester. The conditions admitting to the degree course are that the applicant should be a graduate of an approved University and should show evidence that he is qualified to pursue the course which lie proposes." In a conversation with Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, Sir Henry Miers said that students from Great Britain should be most easily attracted to America, both to universities and colleges and technological institutions.. THE first presentation of this paper was before the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section of the Institute in May, 1914, after which a committee was selected to verify and add to the data contained in the original paper. The author is indebted to G. W. Engel, H. W. Montz, R. V. Norris, and H. H. Otto, of this committee, for additional information. I also wish to acknowledge the courtesies extended me by a number of the mining companies for information relative to accidents, systems of proving, and mining practice. The paper should bring forth additional criticism and recommendations, which will be of value in establishing future practice relative to this subject. Throughout the northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania glacial and alluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and clay exist in varying quantities. The extent and character of these deposits are described by N. H. Darton in Bulletin 45 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, entitled, Sand Available for Filling Mine Workings in the Northern Anthracite Basin. It is estimated that the northern field contains 10,000,000,000 tons of these deposits, or a sufficient quantity to cover the 176 square miles of coal area to a depth of about 25 ft. These deposits of sand, etc., overlying the coal measures attain a maximum depth of more than 300 ft., and are usually saturated to such an extent as to render them semi-fluid. It is .this condition of fluidity that limits the mining of coal seams cropping in or in close proximity to these deposits, and it is in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods under these conditions that the study of this -subject is here presented. The dangers incident to mining under deep deposits of sand have long been realized by operators in the northern anthracite field, and much has been done to prove the contour of the rock and vein croppings underlying these water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel.

The so-called Rocky Mountain region is here made to include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, northern New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, an area of great distances and relatively sparse population. Conditions of distance, transportation and markets have had their retarding influence on devolopment and production but the increase in facilities and markets in recent years has provided additional incentive for more thorough search for new productive areas and the more complete development of the known fields. The low prices of crude during the past year have offset, to a certain extent, the desire for increased production and much of the effort has been directed therefore to outlining new areas rather than to attempts to increase production from known fields and thereby add to the already sufficient supply above ground. During the year just closed the Rocky Mountain region has seen consistent efforts to outline new areas and these efforts have been reasonably successful. In this area a very large part of the land is government property, and by cooperation between the government, the private owner and the company it has been possible to carry on development in a scientific manner, providing for the maximum recovery of valuable products at least cost and at times when prices were best. Due to the fact that in the Rocky Mountain region costs of exploration and development are relatively high because of natural circumstances, it has been the policy of operators to drill test wells only on structures where they controlled a large proportion of the land. Even community lease programs have been effected in certain areas, thus obviating the necessity of offset drilling and the attendant uneconomical and even wasteful production. Oil production in the Rocky Mountain states has shown a slight increase during the year, the average daily production for November being 78,124 bbl. as against an average in January of 76,681 bbl. The total production during the first 11 months of the year, according to the U. S. Burcau of Mines, was as follows:

Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the graund. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, oonsulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through subcommittees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. Tests carried out at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., on the effects of grain-refining deoxidizers are in substantial agreement with the data presented by Mr. Comstock. Notable is the observation that, although boron and aluminum increased hardenability, the steel was of poor quality in comparison with the other boron-treated steels to which at least two grain refiners were added. The effect of zirconium in improving the ductility of the chromium-nickel steel is in agreement with our experience that zirconium is specifically beneficial to chromium steels. In order to amplify Mr. Comstock's results and to indicate some of the basic principles of special deoxidation, the primary observations of our study have been summarized. The effect of boron in increasing hardenability was described by R. Walther, U. S. Patent No. 1519388, Dec. 16, 1924, but effective amounts in incompletely deoxidized steel are sufficient to harm hot workability and room-temperature ductility. Work at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., has shown that in order to obtain deep hardening without using such large amounts of boron as to result in impairment of ductility, the steel must be thoroughly deoxidized. This may be accomplished by a high silicon content or a grain-refining addition of strong deoxidizers. The degree of grain refinement and hardenability are inclined to be erratic when only one grain-refining element is used, although aluminum, zirconium, titanium, and vanadium have been used singly and resulted in increased. although somewhat erratic, hardenability. Unit coal calorific values represent a close approach to pure coal values; they possess characteristics theoretically inherent in the latter values. They are essentially uniform in the same seam for areas possessing essentially uniform geological environment. They are higher in older than in younger coals in most cases, and in deeper than in shallower coals. In general, they display characteristics closely in accordance with expectation assuming that they are essentially indices of rank. Because it possesses these characteristics, the unit coal value is essentially a standard value, characteristic of each bed in each local region. Hence it can be used as a basis for determining the accuracy of results in newly established laboratories, or when new equipment is installed, or in checking the results of different laboratories, or even in determining the character of coal as mined or prepared if ash, moisture and sulfur values are known. DISCUSSION (A. C. Callen presiding) R. P. Hunson,§ Wayland, Ky. (written discussion).—One of the interesting observatioris made by the authors is that there is a more or less definite correlation between unit coal calorific values and the geological environment of the coal bed. It is very interesting to note that, in general, the unit B.t.u. value increases with the increase in the probable original depth of burial, and that each seam tends to increase in calorific value toward the areas of diastrophic instability. It is generally conceded that Parr's formula, for determining unit coal values, is about as accurate as any formula subsequently proposed for the same purpose. In his formula, Professor Parr did not differentiate between the sulfur present as iron pyrites and that present as organic sulfur. However, the practical application of the formula has shown that this is of little consequence. I agree with the authors that unit coal calorific values are useful ill determining the accuracy of calorimetric determinations, and in determining the character of the
