(communication to the Secretary): In connection with Mr. Douglas's mention of the continuous charcoal kiln used at Kopparberg, some further data concerning this important invention may be of interest. Before giving these, however, I will say a word or two concerning other features of Swedish practice. In 1894 I spent two days at Soderfers with Mr. Tom Bergendal, the manager of the works, and was specially interested in the gas-producers and wood-drying kiln, illustrated in the paper contributed to our Transactions by Mr. Odelstjerna in that year.* The wood-drying kiln is, however, quite different in design and construction from Ljungberg's charcoal kiln. In the summer of 1894 it was discovered that by placing the gas-producer as close as possible to the open-hearth furnace, and working the producer hot, ordinary weather-dried wood, still containing a considerable percentage of moisture, could be used to advantage in the melting-furnace. Hence, the dryingkiln was needed for wet wood only. One of the iron-works of the Udeholm Go. was the first to adopt the Lundin saw-dust gas-producer and condenser, enabling them to make gas from saw-dust containing 45 per cent. of moisture, and convey the gas from the condenser through wooden pipes to the Siemens steel-melting furnace.† This sawdust gas gave very satisfactory results in iron-works; but the proprietors experienced much trouble by reason of the pollution of rivers by the tar-water from the condenser. TRACKLESS equipment is being used by the Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. to develop a folded limestone deposit economically and safely with inexperienced men. Cost and quality of development stone results in a saving when it is used in- stead of outside sources of limestone. This favorable cost has been attained by following a methods development and training program described in this paper. It is expected that further savings in favor of the mined stone will be made when stopes now being prepared are in production. The present equipment will be used for loading from stope draw points. The limestone is blended with quarried cement rock to serve as raw material for Portland cement, first produced in this country by Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. from a process developed by its president, David 0. Saylor, in 1873. For many years the cement rock alone or with a small amount of added limestone was used for raw materials. Later as specifications were raised and the richer portions of quarries were depleted, limestone from outside sources was required in increasing amounts. In 1925 D. J. Uhle, the general manager, began to prospect company property for limestone.

The public is already familiar with the general fact that the scope and the financial resources of the approaching St. Louis World's Fair are much larger than those of any of the preceding great expositions; and both the visitor and the exhibitor, when he comes to St. Louis in 1904, will find it to be a real World's Pair, with exhibits and visitors from every known country. Passing over the subject, as to the general Exposition, with this brief statement, I ask Sour attention to the consideration of a few important facts connected with the proposed mining exhibits at this Exposition. Early in 1963, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., at Inspiration, Ariz., began a program to make automatic the lubrication of several critical points on their KW Dart 37SL haulage trucks. Prior to installation of the automatic lubrication system, all the haulage trucks were serviced by hand every three shifts. Now, with automatic lubrication, the service period has been extended to four shifts. What are the principal benefits to be expected from such a system? 1) Uninterrupted production; 2) extended machinery life; 3) good housekeeping; 4) lower maintenance costs. Of these points, the most important to truck maintenance are extended component life and lower maintenance costs.

MANY baffling problems of crustal geology-of warping and folding, elevation, subsidence, and great dislocations of the earth's surface-may now be on the verge of yielding to the science of geophysics. Electric, magnetic, gravitational, geothermal, and seismic methods are being turned to the gathering of geological evidence buried by deep layers of rock, or lying beneath the waters of the oceans. In this hope, B. L. Miller expresses the opinion that these geophysical studies will sup- ply useful data bearing-on some of the more theoretical problems of North American geology. Among these for example, is the explanation of how Appalachia disappeared. This ancient land mass is supposed to have foundered beneath the Atlantic Ocean after the close of the Paleozoic era and the question arises, was it warped or faulted downward? The geophysical data, though meagre, indicate that the surface of the dense, basal rocks, the probable remnant of ancient Appalachia now underlying the Continental Shelf, slopes downwards to a depth of some two miles below sea level at a distance of 140 mi. from shore: thus suggesting that the subsidence was the result of warping downward rather than abrupt faulting.

THE year 1930 in the Ceur d? Alene district was one of curtailment in production. Many of the small properties were closed entirely and only three large. producers, the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Hecla, and the Morning mines were left producing at capacity. No innovations in milling were evident, but progress was made in reducing costs as is always necessary in times of low metal prices. One new concentrator was constructed, a 500-ton daily capacity selective flotation plant for, the Jack Waite Mining Co. This mill uses coarse crushing, followed by hand sorting, for both a high-grade ship- ping ore and waste. The remainder of the ore leaving the sorting belt is crushed in a new type Traylor reduction crusher to %-in. size and stored in large capacity mill ore-bins. The grinding is done with ball mills, in closed circuit with a Dorr classifier to 75 per cent - 200 mesh. Minerals Separation 24-in. flotation machines are used both for a lead and a zinc concentrate, with double cleaning in each case. The concentrates are dewatered in Dorr thickeners and filtered on Oliver late-type filters.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (PL 95-87) lays a new challenge before the surface mining industry by requiring that prime farmlands must be reclaimed to equivalent or higher levels of yield as nonmined prime farmland in the surrounding area (section 510d). We must now evaluate the situation and plan a mining and reclamation program that will achieve that objective. We must recognize that soil and land needs vary with intended land use and climatic setting. Also, various site conditions determine the potential for constructing a productive soil and the best procedures to accomplish that end. It is necessary to plan the land reconstruction program on a site by site basis in order to achieve the best results. Discussion The Prime Land Concept Terms like prime agricultural land have been used loosely for many years to refer to lands that are highly productive and well suited to agricultural use. ALTHOUGH surveying at mining properties is fundamentally the same regardless of the method of mining, at Climax, due to the nature of the ground, the policy of advance development work, and extremes in climatic conditions, surveying practice has had to be revised to meet the specialized conditions of this particular type of mining operation. The company's mine is one of the largest underground properties in the United States. It has proved ore reserves of 275,000,000 tons, 60,000,000 tons of which have been broken. To date, 109,000 ft. of development drifting have been driven, as well as 40,926 ft. of development raising, 10,000 ft. of ventilation drifting and raising, 16,000 ft. of exploration drifting, and 206,000 ft. of diamond drilling. Normal production varies between 1.2,000 and 15,000 tons daily. Development work proceeds at a rate of 11/2 tons developed for every ton milled and with a development of 18,000 to 20,000 tons per day, the following crew is required to take care of mine and surface engineering

IN designing a pocket instrument whereby any given horizontal or vertical angle may be closely approximated, the following points should be kept in view, if general utility is aimed at 1. The instrument should be light and compact, so that it can be carried in the pocket, or in a sling. 2. It should be capable of observing any angle whatever, horizontal or vertical. 3. Since time is often an important consideration in making a preliminary survey, it should be capable of giving the horizontal and vertical angle at one observation. I do not know of any instrument that will fulfill these requirements, except the one here described. Where the depression- or elevation-angle of the distant object, whose bearing is required, exceeds 50 or 60 degrees, it becomes difficult or impossible with a prismatic compass, for instance, to obtain accurate results; and since it frequently happens, particularly in mining, that much work requires to be done beyond that limit, it is obvious that an instrument which can be used to observe a high angle just as easily as a low one, if not absolutely a necessity, will at least be a great convenience. How this " pocket transit " attains to the required degree of universality will be understood from the diagram, Fig. 1, in which B is a beveled, graduated circle, attached to and freely revolving about the center of the magnet A. Light falling on B is reflected through a window in F (the compass-box), along the line AC, and is again reflected back to the eye at D by the prism C. UNION MINIERE D HAUT-KATAIGA operates a group of mines and metallurgical works in the Katanga province of the Belgian Congo. It is especially prominent as a copper producer, but its output of accessory metals, such as cobalt, radium, silver, tin and gold have been considerable. The Belgian Congo covers 920,000 sq. mi. of central Africa, with a native population of about 8,500,000. In addition, Belgium controls by mandate the districts of Ruanda-Urundi (formerly a part of German East Africa) with an area of some 20,000 sq. mi. and a population of about 3,500,000 natives. Most of the native population of the Belgian Congo is found on the wide fertile plains of the great rivers, living under primitive conditions in a tropical climate, where it has survived throughout the centuries in spite of tropical diseases and intertribal wars. In more recent times, especially during the last two centuries, 'the natives have been subjected to frequent raids by the slave traders, which made their existence even more precarious, and if continued much longer would probably have resulted in their complete extermination.

There was very little oil activity in Utah in 1938. A few wildcat tests were drilled and the well at Cane Creek, started in 1937, was in active operation, but failed to reach its objective by the close of the year. The Clay Basin field in Daggett County, northeastern Utah, was extended about a mile east by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. with the completion early in June of No. 3-D Murphy, NW. NW. SW. of sec. 23-3N-24 E. This well had an initial production of 16,000,000 Cu. ft. of gas a day under 2160 Ib. pressure, from Dakota sand at 5918 to 5925 ft. after plugging back from a total depth of 6035 feet. The Clay Basin field, in the few years it has been in operation, has developed into a gas field of major importance. Approximately 1300 acres has now been proved by development. Six wells are on production, five of which were completed in Dakota sand and the sixth in a sand in the Frontier formation. The field was connected to the Salt Lake line

Percolation infers the passage of a liquid through, the interstices of any material or materials permitting it. Leaching is the process of extracting soluble matter by percolation. Lixiviation is analogous to leaching. Percolation and leaching may occur simultaneously. A filter may be used either to strain suspended or finely divided matter from a liquid, when it is known as a clarifier, or to separate a liquid from a solid. Clarification usually infers the addition d: some settling or flocculating agent which permits the decantation of the clear supernatant liquor. The simple separation of solid from liquid, such as occurs when a thickened flotation concentrate is filtered, is usually termed dewatering. The word filtration is used more to cover the complex process of separating, as far as possible, solid from liquid by vacuum or pressure, removing the residual solution by wash, and at the same time leaching any recrystallized, absorbed, or undissolved matter, by percolation with the solvent. The final product of metallurgical treatment should be reported as a recovery when the yield is refined metal. When the metallurgical operations are incomplete and a concentrated but not refined-product is obtained, the metal content should be reported as an extraction.

It is often desirable to work an old mine that has not been in operation for some time arid that is filled with water. This is especially true in Nova Scotia, where no great depth has yet been reached in any of the mines. The following is a description of a self-dumping water-tank which was used by me at Tangier, for draining a mine, and which did the work of a large pump, while the original cost is merely nominal, in comparison with the price of a pump. The tank, A, Pig. 1, is 1 1/3 by 3 feet and 4 feet high, inside measurement, made of 2-inch stuff and securely bound with iron. There are two clacks in the bottom which open as the tank is lowered into the water, and which close and hold the water as the tank is raised. B is an iron rod running through the tank, below and back of the center, and projecting beyond the sides of the tank. C is one of two guides, and D, a movable iron rod in each guide. His work seems to solve an unfinished problem that I attempted to solve on the same lines about two years ago, at a time when I was preparing a paper' on another subject for the American Electrochemical Society. The following paragraph is quoted from the paper referred to: "I feel convinced that a further study of the heats of combination now known for so many compounds, which merely express in other terms their voltages of disruption, will show us the allowance that must be made as a departure from unity in the case of each element, for the intrinsic charge of its elementary molecule, and thereby render possible the creation of a table of apparent relative atomic capacities for electricity, similar to the table of atomic weights. Radiation grafting of ion exchange structures contains ion exchange groups but may consist of neutral groups. High energy grafting of monomers on to polymers has-been known since 1950 (1.2); manufacture on an industrial level was-begun in 1970.(3) Proper choice of substrate and monomer will produce various ion exchange membranes with differing physico and chemical properties. Grafting a selected monomer to the proper polymer will provide selective ion exchange with assured chemical protection of the substrate. Ion exchange systems utilizing radiation grafted structures to polymers have been fabricated to "capture" gold from drag-out and rinse water and silver from cyanide rinse water. Other ion exchange systems can feasibly be produced to remove other precious metals. Rotating Cathode Technology is used to recover the metals from their concentrated eluating solutions as pure metal foil.
