HALLOWAY mine of Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill, Tenn., has been under development for several years. It has two shafts, the A shaft, 1336 ft deep from the surface to the 16 level, and the B shaft, lying 500 ft to the southeast and extending 1385 ft deep from the 10 level down to the 24 level. A section through the two shafts, Fig. 1, shows the development work entailed by the proposal and the area involved. The Problem: For operational reasons it was necessary to extend the B shaft from the 10 level to surface, and the pilot hole and raising method was chosen. This method had been used to extend the Company's Boyd manshaft from the 10 to the 14 level in 1954, but no satisfactory hole surveying method had been employed. In that instance, when the hole was located it was found to be about 8 ft from its calculated position. The success of this shaft extension method lies in the ability to keep the pilot hole within the proposed shaft diameter for nearly the entire length. The approximate 670 ft of extension distance in one hole was thought to be excessive because of deflection encountered locally in other core drilling. Since a connection between the two shafts, intermediate between the surface and the 10 level, would be required at some future date, the pilot hole drilling was done in two sections. This intermediate level was fixed at the 6 level and distances became 470 ft from surface to the 6 level and 230 ft from the 6 to the 10 level. A rock pentice of 25 ft was left temporarily in place just above the 10 level.

PENNSYLVANIA will be remembered, as long as oil is produced, as the cradle of the industry of petroleum in North America. It was on Oil Creek, near Titusville, Venango Co., .that Cola Edwin L. Drake, superintendent for the Seneca Oil Co., brought in the first commercial oil well on Aug. 28, 1859. Great difficulty was experienced in getting the well down to the producing depth of 69 ft. (21 m.) with the spring-pole system then in vogue for punching shallow water wells, so the novel expedient of driving an iron tube through the surface clays and quicksand was finally resorted to. The well had an initial yield of 25 bbl. a day on the pump, but soon went off, though 2000 bbl. were produced by the end of the year. With the Drake well a success, a young industry sprang into being, the rapid growth of which has been second to none in the country and the value of whose product is only surpassed by that of coal. For years the only producing territory, the Pennsylvania-New York field attained its greatest production in 1891, when the bringing in of the McDonald pool, between Pittsburgh and the West Virginia line, gave a total of over 33,000,000 bbl. At present the field, combined with West Vir-ginia and southeast Ohio, gives 25,000,000 barrels. GEOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY In general, the Appalachian field is a huge geosyncline, the axis of which runs roughly northeast-southwest, from north of the New York state line south through Brookeville, Kittanning, Pittsburgh, Washington, through the southwest corner of the state of Pennsylvania into West Virginia. Minor folding has accompanied or followed the dominant fold of the field, and it is from these structures near the Pennsylvania-West Virginia line and their influence on the accumulation of oil and gas that I. C. White, state geologist of West Virginia, obtained his evidence for anticlinal guidance of prospecting.

Drilling and blasting 12-in. blastholes started about the middle of 1946 and has worked out so well that about one half of the blasting, formerly done with 9-in. holes, is now done with 12-in. holes. In most of this work the harder benches were chosen for the 12-in. size because these were the areas where the greatest difficulty was encountered in thorough fragmentation. At the start of this experimental work a 42-T Bucyrus- Erie churn drill was available whereas all other blasthole drilling was being done with 29-T rigs. The large drill was first equipped with a standard 9-in. string of tools but it could not drill quite as fast as the 29-T drills. How- ever, when the weight of the string was increased about 700 lb, or to a total weight of about 3500 lb, it was found that the 42-T exceeded the drilling speed of the 29-T by about 25 per cent. When a 12-in. bit was substituted for the 9-in. bit the 42-T rig again dropped behind the drill- ing rate of the 29-T rigs. At this stage of the experiment the 42-T was using a 12-in. bit with detachable points and the total weight of the string of tools was about 3800 lb. It took longer to change the drill points than it did the regulation bit and this accounted for some of the slower drilling rate. When a heavier stem and standard construction 12-in. bits were used it was found that the 42-T could drill a 12-in. hole slightly faster than a 29-T could drill a 9-in. hole even in the hardest rock in the pit.

R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. The difference between the 6 pct overall recovery-increase expected after the tests in 1943 and the actual plant results given for 1949 is explained as follows. There are approximately thirty to forty operating mills in the United States which are currently producing uranium yellow cake. This figure includes a significant number of in situ and by-product operations however the conventional acid leach flowsheet depicted in Figure 1 is the most common process used by domes- tic yellow cake producers. Ground ore is leached with sulphuric acid and the solids are separated from the pregnant liquor and washed in a series of counter- current decantation thickeners. After clarification of the pregnant liquor, uranium is recovered from the solvent extraction/stripping circuit by the addition of ammonia with precipitation of ammonium diuranate, or simply yellow cake. The yellow cake precipitate is then thickened in a conventional thickener before re- porting to the dewatering/washing unit operation. De- watered solids subsequently report to thermal drying, and clarified liquor from the dewatering/washing step is recycled to the yellow cake thickener. The yellow cake dewatering/washing unit operation is generally accomplished using either a solid bowl centrifuge or a rotary vacuum drum filter. In most cases the underflow from the yellow cake thickener is pumped to the dewatering/washing unit operation at approximately fifteen to twenty percent solids. For the purpose of this discussion ammonium diuranate, the product of ammonia precipitation from a conventional acid-leach uranium mill flow sheet, as discussed earlier, will be considered. With only slight adjustment this discussion will be equally applicable to sodium diuranate or uranium perioxide precipitates and to either in situ or by-product operations where such precipitates are generated. Some of the domestic uranium mills which have selected solid bowl centrifuges instead of vacuum drum filters for the dewatering/washing unit operations are listed in Figure 2. Why have these uranium mills, as well as others not listed, chosen to use the solid bowl centrifuge for this particular application? It is simply a matter of performance, reliability and economics. In the remainder of this paper the performance, initial cost, installation cost, maintenance and power consumption of both the solid bowl centrifuge and the rotary vacuum drum filter will be com- pared. In order to provide a consistent basis for comparison the appropriate sized (centrifuge or filter) unit for the dewatering/washing of 400 to 500 pounds per hour of yellow cake solids will be considered. Such a flow will usually be generated by a typical 3,000 ton per day (acid-leach) uranium mill.

The search for ore continued at its relentless pace throughout 1967. Canada, South Africa and Australia plus a few scattered localities on the globe reported minerals finds of significant importance. Many of the reported finds were not high grade ore, but they nonetheless will assist in sup- plying a highly industrialized, mineral hungry world. No longer does inaccessibility and remoteness close an area to mineral exploration and development. The communication and transportation systems of today have closed the gap and, moreover, the demand for essential mineral commodities is causing price shifts which encourage exploitation of deposits heretofore considered uneconomical.

Heat transfer coefficients have been measured in beds of various packings irrigated with mercury and molten fusible alloy countercurrent to hot gases. The measured coefficients for both systems were found to increase with gas velocities and liquid rates. Correlations were determined which show this dependence and also indicate that heat transfer in these systems is influenced by the liquid flow characteristics and the thermal conductivity of the gas and the solid packings. A heat transfer model has beer2 proposed which explains the various features of the experimental results. On the basis of this study, which gives an insight into the heat exchange in the melting zone of the blast furnace, it was concluded that by comparison with the furnace stack heat transfer coefficients are about 1.5 times higher in the melting zone. EACH year large tonnages of metal are produced in operations which, in part, involve liquid metal irrigation of "packings" countercurrent to hot gases. The melting zone in blast furnaces and in cupolas is a good example of packings irrigated with a liquid melt countercurrent to gases. In all instances of this kind large amounts of heat are exchanged and it is desirable to have some knowledge of heat transfer phenomena involved in these systems. So far the most common method of analyzing furnace efficiencies, fuel requirements, and the general thermal state of the furnace has been through the use of heat balances. As heat balances are essentially statements of the first law of thermodynamics they give no real indication of the factors which govern heat transfer between phases in the various zones of blast furnaces. Hence, rational improvement in production efficiency and the development of theoretical models is only possible if the heat transfer characteristics are known at every stage of the process and related to the important variables involved. This has been generally recognized for some time but it was only recently that Kitaev et al.' have produced a comprehensive treatment of heat transfer in solid-gas countercurrent systems such as the blast furnace stack and the packed bed regenerator. Using their treatment it is now possible to predict the effect of particle size, thermal conductivity, bed porosity, and the flow rates of both the gas and the solid material on the heat transfer in the blast furnace stack. However, the stack of a blast furnace is only one part of an integral unit for which the heat transfer analysis cannot be complete without also considering the heat exchange in the melting zone. The complexity of heat transfer processes in this region of the furnace has so far escaped quantitative description. Yet, the melting zone accounts for a greater amount of heat exchange than all the other zones of the furnace put together. Moreover, if the reduction of oxides in the melting zone proceeds in part in the liquid state the importance of heat transfer on furnace productivity and on the metal and slag temperatures is obvious. THEORY Heat transfer for two-phase flow in packed beds is a complex problem involving a number of heat exchange paths for which interphase areas are not known with any degree of certainty. Analytical solution is, therefore, difficult. This difficulty is emphasized by noting that Rabinovich~ and Luck have only recently solved the steady-state heat transfer for simplified two-phase heat exchangers of known area. However, useful progress can be made for the system considered by making a not unreasonable assumption that the usual heat transfer considerations apply and restricting treatment to the steady state. For these conditions the rate of heat transfer dq in a height dz of a packed bed of unit area is: dq = UaATdz [I.] Integration of Eq. [I] then gives the total heat transferred: assuming both U, the overall heat transfer coefficient, and a, the interphase area, to be independent of bed height. Since a, in these systems, is unknown it is convenient to combine this term with U. The group U, then represents the overall heat transfer coefficient on a volumetric basis. If AT is linear with q, then for a bed of unit volume Eq. [Z] can be integrated to give: is the log mean of terminal temperature differences. From Eq. [3] U, can be readily calculated as q and {AT)im are experimentally obtained quantities, but a difficulty arises in interpreting its meaning. Two approaches are possible depending on whether the effect of packing in the transfer of heat is neglected or not. If the packing is thermally decoupled then the resistance concept gives the relationship: which states that the overall resistance is the sum of the gas phase and the liquid phase resistances (assuming areas are equal throughout). Because the resistance to heat transfer in liquid metals is negligible by comparison with that of the gas,4 Eq. [4] can be simplified, i.e.:

COKE and by-products have prime importance in the war program. The past year was marked by the construction of new and the rehabilitation of old by-product and beehive ovens and by the increase of production from existing plants to practically 100 per cent capacity. W. T. Brown's paper, "Plan to Improve Blast-Furnace Coke," presented at the Fuels Conference in St. Louis, Sept. 30, showed how the blending of low- and high-volatile coal improved the physical properties of coke and that improvement of the quality and uniformity of coke favored an increase of blast-furnace capacity- a vital need in the war program. Others in the industry have likewise increased production of coke or recovery of by- products by various innovations or changes in operation. Recognition of the value of pooling these developments for the benefit of the entire industry led to organization of a survey of coke- oven plants and blast furnaces by the Bureau of Mines in co-operation with the Solid Fuels Co-ordinator with a view to improving metallurgical coke production and recovery of by-products. This survey is being conducted with the help of an advisory committee consisting of representatives of the Bureau of Mines, the Solid Fuels Co-ordinator, the War Production Board, and the blast-furnace, coke-oven, and coal-mining industries.

THE properties of the metal molybdenum have been the subject of recent investigations1,2 = which have included studies of the changes that occur in the metal when it is annealed after having been cold worked. Most of the data which have been reported have pertained to only one aspect of annealing, that is, the conditions under which recrys-tallization has been observecl. The process of recovery which may precede recrystallization docs not appear to have been investigated, and it is the purpose of this note to report observations on the recovery process in cold-worked molybdenum as determined by changes ill the thermoelectric power which occur as the metal is annealed. The measurements were made on commercially pure molybdenum wires which, after annealing at 1035°C in dried hydrogen for 1 hr, were swaged to give a series of reductions up to a maximum of 84.5 pct. The variously cold-worked wires were then annea1c.d in dried hydrogen for periods of 16 hr at progrc:ssively highel. temperatures from 200" to 1000 c with a final annealing treatment of 70 hr at. 1100°C. After each annealing treatment the ther.ma1 emf's were determined against a length of original unwo~,ked material that had received the initial hydrogen anrit,aling treatment. The difference in temperature between the hot and cold junctions was maintained at about 75'C. and. the thermal emf's were measured with a potentiometer that could be read. to 0.01 microvolt. Fig. 1 shows the thermoelectric power. (dE/dT) in microvolts per C between annclalcd and cold-worked molybdenum as a function of the degree of cold work. The effect of annealing is shown in Fig. 2. The general shape of the curves in both figures is similar to results which have been obtained for copper." It was observed that after annealing at temperatures as low as 200°C recovery was well under way. The rapid changes irt thermoelectric power observed near 900 C are probably associated with recrystallization, since such a relation has been observed with copper. Beyond 900°C the thermal emf's changed in polarity. indicating that from this point or1 the specimens were more highly annealed than the standard. Annealing treatments could not be given at temperatures higher than 1100°C due to limitations of the furnace, and it is evident that, since equilibrium values of thermoelectric powers were far from having been attained, temperatures considerably higher are required to fully anneal molybdenum. THE patent system, through which an inventor is given exclusive right to his invention for a limited period as a reward for his industry and in reimbursement of his expenditures, originated in England in the famous "Statute of Monopolies," enacted in 1623. The first patent granted in America was to Samuel Winslow, in Massachusetts, in 1641. The basis of the patent system of the United States is a provision in the Constitution giving Congress the power to secure to inventors for a limited time the exclusive use of their discoveries. The first legislative enactment was the law of 1790, which was placed on the statute book after Washington had addressed Congress in its favor. Under this law, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General constituted the board for the examination of patent applications and the granting of patents. The first Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, became the first administrator of the patent sys- tem in this country. He personally examined every application filed during his term of office.

This paper describes an electrical model and its applicution to the analysis of four reservoirs in Saudi Arabia. The model has 2,501 mesh points and represents 35,000 sq miles of the Arab-D member. Details of modeling such as mesh size, control problems and standards of performance in matching reservoir history are discussed. The particular performance match achieved for the Arab-D rnember is presented. Details such as permeability barriers, aquifer depletion and iwerference between oil fields are given. The performance match realized in the Abqaiq pool is presented in detail. INTRODUCTION The resistor-capacitor network and associated control equipment described in this paper comprise an electrical analog of a reservoir system. Similar equipment has been used to study the transient response of reservoirs for many years. The unique feature of the model and application to be described is the extremely large size of the model and reservoir system, and the detail observed in simulating the reservoir with the model. The Arabian American Oil Co. first became interested in analog computers for simulation of oil reservoirs in 1949. Since that time, several models have been developed, each more elaborate and refined so that the reservoir system might be more closely simulated. The current model is the latest in a series designed, built and operated by the Field Research Laboratory of Socony Mobil Oil Co. in collaboration with Aramco. It has been and continues to be used to study the regional performance of the Arab-D member limestone reservoir. The Arab-D member is one of the Middle East's most prolific producing horizons.. THE MODEL The theory of simulating a reservoir system with an electrical system has been presented in the literature.1-5 Therefore, this paper will not discuss the theoretical aspect of the problem except to point out the correspondence between the fluid system and electrical system, as shown in Table 1. In general, the complete model is made up of input devices, output devices, central control and a resistance-capacitance (RC) network. At times, the RC network alone is referred to as the "model". However, it should be evident from the text which meaning is attached to the word "model". A discussion of the equipment follows. THE RESISTANCE-CAPACITANCE NETWORK The RC network consists of 2,501 capacitance decades interconnected through 4,900 resistance decades. The components are arranged to form a rectangular network of 2,501 mesh points in a 41- X 61-mesh array. Imposing the mesh grid system on the continuous reservoir system divides the reservoir into discrete areal segments. These discrete segments may be of various sizes. More precisely, the mesh size need not be uniform throughout the model. The RC network is fabricated in two sections which are connected at the top. An inside view of the "tunnel" formed by the two sections is shown in Fig. 1. The height and width of the tunnel are shown in the figure. Numerals appear along the bottom and along the back opening of the tunnel. These numbers denote the x and y co-ordinate positions of mesh points. Fig. 2 presents a rear view of one-half the model. The length dimensions of the model, as well as a rear view of the capacitor decades, are shown in this figure. The control dials used in adjusting the resistance and capacitance values on the model can be seen in the enlarged portion of the model shown in Fig. 3. The electrical capacity at any mesh point can range from 0 to 1.0 microfarads set to the nearest tenth of a microfarad. The electric resistance connecting any two mesh points can range from 0 to 9,990,000 ohms set to the nearest 1,000 ohms. External capacitors may be added to any or all mesh points if the need arises.
