TRENDS in the manufacture and use of cast iron are decidedly toward specialization, alloy iron, and increased strength. Old handbooks list only one kind of cast iron, with a tensile strength of 15,000 lb. Recent A.S.T.M. specifications show that from 50,000 to 60,000 lb. per sq. in. can now regularly he guaranteed. The use of alloy iron, heat-treated iron, and even nitrided cast iron, is rapidly growing and all kinds are improving in quality. Iron for operation at high temperature and corrosion-resisting irons have also been developed. Only a few years ago cast iron was "cast iron," but now there are almost as many kinds of cast iron as there are foundries making it

Recent work indicates that fluosilicate ions and or fluosilicate amine complex ions play important roles in fluoride activation of bery and feldspars in cationic flotation systems. In an attempt to further confirm conclusions reached in this earlier work, an infrared and X-ray diffraction study of the action of fluorides in cationic flotation of silicates was undertaken. It should be noted that in recent years considerable use has been made of infrared spectroscopy in studies of surface phenomena,2-4 and these studies have established the excellence of the technique. In the present study infrared spectra were obtained for various products of the reaction of HF and dode-cyclamine hydrochloride with quartz, microcline and beryl. These spectra were compared with one another and spectra of several inorganic and organic substances. In addition to infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns were run on many of the reaction products obtained. A model 137 B Perkin Elmer Infracord double beam spectrophotometer containing sodium chloride optics was used to obtain the spectra. Infrared samples, except for the dodecylamine sample, were prepared by thoroughly mixing the substance to be analyzed with purified KBr in steel vessels on a Wig-L-Bug amalgamator. One-half in. pellets weighing 100 mg were than pressed under vacuum. Details concerning percentage of the substance to be analyzed in the pellets are indicated on the spectra. In all cases except for dodecylamine a KBr pellet was placed in the reference beam of the spectrophotometer to cancel bands due to possible impurities in the KBr. The dodecylamine sample on which an infrared spectrum was obtained was prepared by placing pure dodecylamine between two salt plates. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with a Norelco instrument, using a copper target tube, nickel filter and Geiger tube detector. The samples were ground into powders and either placed on glass slides with glue or placed into regular powder sample holders for diffraction studies. Goniometer scanning speed varied from 1°/min to 1/8°/min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Infrared spectra of microcline, beryl and quartz were obtained first and are shown in Fig. 1. These spectra agree reasonably well with previously reported spectra.5,6 The microcline (Fig. 1 a) and beryl (Fig. 1 b) were from good Black Hills crystals. The quartz (Fig. 1 c) was from a large, clear Brazilian crystal. It is not clear whether absorption bands of minerals are due to molecular vibrations, lattice vibrations or both. Fig. 2 shows infrared spectra of dodecylamine (Fig. 2 a) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (Fig. 2 b). The dodecylamine spectrum checks quite closely with that reported in Sadtler.8 Little is known of the spectra of hydrochloride salts of amines,9 and a spectrum of dodecylamine hydrochloride could not be

ONE of the chief concerns of the Bethlehem Steel Co. naturally is the proper functioning of its organization. This involves the training of a continuous supply of younger men to fill the vacancies caused not only by the inevitable departure of older men, but also by the growth of existing establishment, and by expansion in new directions. It does not oper-ate a student training course with a fixed time schedule or with definite periods of rotation through the differ-ent divisions. To state the case positively, the gradu-ate's training course must operate continuously from the beginning of his employment through a long term of years. No period of weeks or months nor pair of years suffice to bring him into contact with all the com-binations needed to qualify him for the larger destiny toward which we hope he is headed. Our first step in selecting a college man is to require that he have a degree. We thus approximate the assur-ance that at least four annual siftings have reduced the chance that a non-worker may find himself in a job where work is necessary. The next step is to try to ascertain facts, from the graduate and from others who have known him at his home and in 'his college, to indi-cate whether our opportunities offer him a career that will challenge his continuing interest, and hold him to tenacious effort against all happenings. We aim to avoid knowingly bringing into our organization a man who will not develop in it enough enthusiasm to keep him happily striving. Having made our selections, we assemble the gradu-ates into a probationary observation circuit. We-put ourselves under their observation by taking them in small groups, usually of two to four men, on a circuit of every part of the Bethlehem plant, in which every manufacturing principle of our steel business is ex-emplified. The probationers work at something from day to day, with their hands if it can be arranged; otherwise in questioning, examining, and note-taking. Their observations include talks with superintendents, foremen, and workmen, the conditions under which workmen labor, apparatus, machinery, methods, design and operation of plant.

C.—With reference to Mr. Bain's paper: The scarcity of adequate geologic data on building stone reflects, among other things, a lack of interest on the part of geologists. It has been one of my duties to attend to matters relating to building stone and other structural materials that have come to the U. S. Geological Survey, but for several years my principal administrative and other duties in the Section of Metalliferous Deposits have prevented me from giving structural materials the attention that they deserve. I have felt that investigations relating to structural materials should be assigned to someone else, but thus far nobody with a sufficient interest in the subject has come forward; further, the specific calls for these investigations have been so few and far between that it has not seemed practical to draft any one for the job. The general situation is such that steady and substantial progress in the application of geology to the utilization of structural materials is not likely to be made unless someone with keen interest in the subject takes the initiative. If the start is once made, I know from experience that cooperation from the more progressive members of the quarry and building industries will be readily forthcoming. Mr. Sales' suggestions are all constructive and most welcome. A thorough, detailed discussion of them might be as long as his manuscript, but could largely be summarized with the one word "amen" qualified by the alibi that a chronic shortage of funds and therefore of personnel has prevented us from carrying out some of his suggestions already. A few of them might call for an Act of Congress before we could undertake them, and one or two, such as the preservation of mine maps, with which I heartily agree, would call for much additional space as well as clerical and supervising help. Several items in Mr. Sales' paper—for example, the question of balance between the scientific and more directly practical studies and the surveys or resurveys of the larger and smaller mining districts—have been covered in my contribution to the symposium. The suggestion of frequent reviews of progress in the study of ore deposits is excellent and can be followed without serious diversion from projects already on the Survey's program. Brief reviews by Survey men have been published in periodicals, and the contributions by several of them to the Lindgren Volume1 may also be cited as serving this purpose to some degree. The practice of publishing short papers by Survey men in outside journals rather than in Government reports is largely the result of experience and expedience. Our printing funds are limited, and considerable time must elapse between the transmittal of a paper and its publication. Time is saved therefore by sending papers to outside journals, and the editors of those journals are usually glad to receive them. Members of the Survey would doubtless prefer to have the products and byproducts of their official work appear in official Survey publications if conditions were more favorable. If we were left entirely to ourselves the balance between the more scientific and the more directly practical studies would be somewhat better than it is, but the

Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).

The drying of fine coal involves special techniques, which are discussed and analyzed. Types of dryers employing these techniques are described. Calculations are presented for new methods of dealing with the entrained dust that is always present in fine coal drying operations. NEW conditions, new requirements, and new methods have increased the demand for more efficient and more economical methods of drying fine coal. Dewatering of larger sizes may reduce the surface moisture to 8 or 9 pct. It is more difficult, however, to dewater sizes below 1/4 in., and some filter cakes still contain as much as 20 or 25 pct moisture. Increased freight rates and stricter consumer specifications have resulted in a demand for further reductions in moisture content. This can be obtained only by heat drying. Most modern methods of heat drying disperse or spread the mass of coal to be dried, in an atmosphere of dry hot gases. The more intimate the contact between coal particles and hot gases, the quicker and more efficient the drying operation will be. Two different techniques are generally employed, using either a fluidized condition or an entrained condition of the coal to be dried. Fluidized Condition Fluidization of a body of sand was defined and explained by Fraser and Yancey in a paper published in 1926.' This condition was artificially obtained and maintained by proper regulation of the rate of air flowing through the sand body. "The sand bath 'boils' uniformly on the surface," they write, "and feels like a fluid." The fluidization technique was also described and analyzed by Steinmetzer2 in connection with the operation of an air cleaning table. His main conclusions are as follows: "Fluidity is, for the particles involved, the possibility of motion with minimum friction. . . . Then fluidity requires the introduction of various forms of energy capable of neutralising frictions. Two solutions can be used— air and/or mechanical motions (such as the shaking motion of the carrying deck of the air table). The combination of mechanical and air energy will give the widest margins of size ratios and of bed thickness, translated in capacity per unit area of the carrying table." Richardson and Langston3 have indicated results obtained with a dryer working with a fluidized bed. They used a vertical tube type of dryer, however, without the assistance of any mechanical energy, and without any lateral motion of the fluidized bed. The capacity of such a dryer is too limited for practical applications, since the speed of the acceptable air currents is held to the speed of fall of the particles involved. Capacities as low as 182 Ib of coal per hr per sq ft of dryer area are indicated. As stated by Richardson: "A basic limitation to a fluidised bed dryer is that the velocities of the gas must be held within a definite range; with velocities of 10 ft per second, all coal minus 6 mesh in size will be entrained, and the operation is then similar to that of a Flash dryer." A fluidized bed must be virtually static. The coal particles simply kept in suspension offer a minimum resistance to the flow of gases, insuring the most favorable conditions for rapid evaporation of surface moisture. However, very wet fine coal, i.e., over 12 pct of surface moisture, will be delivered in the forms of mud balls, or as a soggy, sticky mass, almost impossible to disperse, sticking and acting as a wet blanket on the deck. Strong currents of gases and wide deck perforations will be required to punch holes in the wet mass and gradually loosen and fluidize it. The mechanics of fluidizing a bed of coal in a gas medium for the purpose of obtaining the most efficient drying condition are entirely similar when the fluid used is water and the purpose is to break up and distend a bed of coal to be cleaned so that perfect stratification according to densities will be insured. Purely mechanical energy is used in the basket-type jig, water pulsations in the piston and in the Baum-type jigs. A combination of mechanical motion and of air pulsation offers the most efficient and favorable conditions. Entrained Condition The most critical factor to be considered in the design of a dryer employing the entrained condition technique is the speed of the hot gases to be circulated in the drying column. With insufficient gas velocity, excessive amounts of the largest sizes will drop to the bottom of the dryer column without being thoroughly dried. On the other hand, high gas velocity will cause degradation, dust losses, and high power consumption. Figs. 1 and 2, reproduced from Hanot,4 show the relative importance of speed and temperature for various sizes of particles. It can be seen, for instance, that to maintain in unstable equilibrium particles of 1/4-in. size in a gas current at 500°C, a speed of 30 meters per sec, or 6000 fpm, will be required. For % -in. particles an almost prohibitive speed of 45 meters per sec, or 9000 fpm, will be necessary. In practice, maximum gas velocities of 3000 fpm are recommended; since power increases as the cube of the velocity, it can be seen that beyond certain limits such dryers would not be economical. PETROLEUM industry forecasts are constantly made and revised but are not in the nature of predictions. Particularly in the field of demand, many of the factors are far beyond control by the producing industry. Supply reacts on demand and demand reacts on supply. Competent economists in the oil business forecasted a year ago, on the basis of experience, that demand would now be at a much lower level than it is. This increased demand increased the price of crude oil and products, and in turn those increased prices have brought forth increased supply. A reduction in demand would lead to a reduction in supply. Shortages are now world-wide, and costs of secondary importance, so if there were extra supplies in California they would be moved into what are termed "unnatural markets." For example, Argentina is in the market today for California gasoline; that is an unnatural market because of the greater transportation distances from California to Argentina than from normal sources.

For the past several years the U. S. Department of Energy has sponsored the development of a computer simulation program that will predict the performance of coal preparation plants under a variety of different operating conditions. Recently a study was undertaken to transfer the simulation logic from the large scale mainframe environment to a small inexpensive microcomputer operating in a highly interactive "user friendly" environment. This paper describes a program that was written for the APPLE II Plus microcomputer which accomplishes these objectives. The program prompts the user for information in such a manner that it can be used by persons other than computer specialists. This makes the program directly accessible to plant managers, designers and operating engineers.

Kennecott Copper Corp. has sub- mitted a proposal to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission for a joint experiment to determine if a contained underground nuclear explosion can be used to fracture a low-grade copper ore deposit to recover the copper by in-situ leaching. If authorized, safety and technical studies in the field would be undertaken to determine whether such an experiment could be conducted with full protection for public health and safety. The proposed experiment, known as "Sloop," would be part of the AEC's Plowshare Program to develop peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. As now visualized, the project involves the detonation of about a 20-kiloton nuclear explosive at a depth of 1200 ft.

Early in life he came to the United States, however, and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1915 .as a geologist. Thereafter for a few years he was with the Colorado State Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines, also doing a bit of teaching at his alma mater and at Washington University, St. Louis. Dimitri Konstantinovitch Tschernoff, was horn in Petrograd, Russia, on Nov. 1, 1839, and died in Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, on Jan. 2, 1921. He obtained his early education in the Russian Gymnasium, corresponding to the American high school, and in the Technologic Institute. On graduation from this Institute in 1858, he was engaged as a professor of geometry and algebra and later became a librarian and superintendent of the museum in the same Institute. He also attended lectures in the mathematical physics section at the Univrrsity of Petrograd from 1859 to 1862. In 1866, Professor Tschernoff left the Technologic Institute and entered the employ of the Obouchoff steel plant, founded in 1863 for the manufacture of guns. Here he did his most important work on the heat treatment of steel, its crystallization and metallography. In 1880, he left the Obouchoff plant and went to the south of European Russia, where he discovered and developed some rock-salt mines. This enterprise brought him a rather large fortune. In 1884, he returned to Petrograd and during the next four years held several prominent positions in government departments. In 1899, he became professor of metallurgy in the Michael Artillery Academy, and retained that position until the time of the Russian Revolution. In 1902, Professor Tschernoff was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. In September, 1917, Professor Tschernoff was sponding his vacation, as usual, in the city of Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, with his wife and one of his daughters. The revolution progressed so rapidly that they were unable to return to Petrograd, and were compelled to stay in Yalta without provision for the winter season. Suffering from hunger. and lack of sufficient clothing, and deprived of his books, Tschernoff nevertheless continued his studies and gave a number of lectures on steel at the Polytechnic Institute. At the same time he worked hard on some. mathematical problems. His health broke down through long-continued under-nourishment. His works in the metallurgical field are well known to the students of metallurgy; good abstracts of his most important papers were published in Revue de Metallurgie (1915, pp. 829-882) in commemoration of his 75th birthday.

Abstract-A continuous survey of radon gas was made in two interconnecting stopes in a southwestern U. S. uranium mine to determine how the various phases of the mining cycle affected the radon concentration. The radon was monitored continuously with five detectors. One detector monitored the intake air, one the exhaust air, and three the stope air. The radon concentrations present during slushing, blasting, and exhaust fan shutoff were compared with concentrations on a nonwork day as a base level. Inside the stope, the radon concentration increased about 40% during slushing and 425% after blasting. Intake air radon increased 1600% and the stope air increased 550% while the surface exhaust fan was off.

ZINC smelters in the central western. States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 percent of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-Carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, calcite, pyrite or rnarcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1, marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90, and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, sine-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. lron oxides or the gangue minerals of iron ores can be made to float, depending upon the choice of collector. The selectivity of the separation is controlled by the accompanying chemical and operating conditions. In this report the findings on the general flotation characteristics of magnetite are summarized and the results are compared with those obtained for other iron oxides. Depending upon the choice of collector, either the iron oxides or the gangue minerals of iron ores can be made to float, the selectivity of the separation being controlled by the accompanying chemical and operating conditions. The mechanism by which a collector exerts preferential affinity for either group of minerals has been a subject of extended discussion. Previous investigations on the electrokinetic properties and flotation characteristics of hematite,' goethite,2 and quartz3 have demonstrated the electrical nature of the interaction of the collector with these oxide surfaces; anionic collectors are effective on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. Thus, from the differences in the electrokinetic properties of the above-named oxides, a theoretical basis has been provided for their separation by some typical collectors. Examination of the results reported for hematite and goethite shows that their electrokinetic properties and flotation characteristics are remarkably similar. It is of considerable interest, therefore, to examine similar information for magnetite, another common iron oxide, in order to consolidate the flotation characteristics of the three principal minerals of oxide iron ores. Such information is practically significant in the up-grading of both natural and artificial mag- netite produced from taconite, and in the treatment of partially oxidized magnetite ores. Information on maghemite and lepidocrocite, polymorphs of hematite, and goethite, respectively, is also of some theoretical interest in ascertaining the effects of crystal structure and of hydration in the iron oxide group. This article reports the findings on the general flotation characttxistics of magnetite, and compares the results with those obtained for other iron oxides. Experimentally, tlhe surface properties of magnetite were investigated by electrophoresis, and by measurement of the aclsorption of some typical flotation collectors. Its flotation behavior was tested by contact angle measurements and by simple flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube. The basic information thus gathered was shown to be directly applicable to the interpretation of the results of batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of magnetite and quartz. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Magnetite: Magnetite concentrate from Port Henry, N. Y., was further purified by fine crushing and magnetic separaiion, and was used throughout this investigation. For flotation tests the 150/200 mesh fraction was iso1ated and was cleaned by leaching briefly with warn 0.1 N HC1 followed by repeated washing with demineralized water. The final sample analyzed 71.71 pct Fe, 22.37 pct Fe" and 0.47 pct insoluble, and was stored in demineralized water. For e1ectrophoresis and adsorption measurements, the —400 mesh fraction of the magnetite concentrate was ground dry in a pebble mill. The surface area of the ground sample, as determined by the gas permeability method, was 70,000 sq cm per g. Since artificial magnetite has been reported to possess somewhat different physical properties than those of natural magnetite, it also was briefly examined. Preliminary flotation tests on a sample of artificial magnelite, prepared by reducing Brazilian hematite in a C0/CO2 mixture and analyzing 71.94 pct Fe and 23.78 pct Fe'', gave, however, nearly identical results with those using natural magnetite. THE practice of fine-grinding is now being so successfully - carried on in some fields, notably in West Australia, and its advisability has been so frequently pointed out' that the matter in this paper is not put forward as being new ; its chief object being to call attention to the importance of fine-grinding in the treatment of comparatively low-grade ores. I have been engaged during the last five years in the cyanide-treatment of ores in the Ohinemuri district (North Island), New Zealand, and I consider that, in the near future, extremely fine-grinding (almost sliming) will become a very important feature of the milling-methods in this field, since it seems absolutely necessary to reduce the most of ores to a very fine state of division if a high extraction is to be obtained; and, in most cases, the extra percentage of saving will leave a good margin above the increased cost of treatment due both to the fine-grinding and to the interest on the capital spent for the grinding-machinery. The average ore of the Ohinemuri field is composed of a quartz-gangue with some calcite, carrying the gold-value in the form of an alloy of gold and silver in about equal proportions, and the silver-value in the form of mixed sulphides of silver, usually associated with a considerable amount of iron pyrites. In the upper levels, the ores are decomposed and carry large quantities of black manganese oxide and some iron oxide, but, as. depth is reached, the decomposed ore gives place to sulphides and, in some mines, rhodonite, manganese silicate, is present in fairly large quantities. An understanding of the mechanism of creep of metals requires an accurate knowledge of shape of the time-deformation curve. An expression is developed which accurately expresses the creep curve for a number of structurally stable metals and alloys. VAST strides have been made in the development of high temperature creep resistant alloys; however, no sound understanding of the physical mechanism of creep exists to date. Consequently, creep resistant alloys are still developed by "cut and try" methods formerly so successful but now yielding returns at a continuously diminishing rate. It is apparent to all workers in the field that if the mechanism of creep were understood, much fruitless labor could be avoided. The dirth of fundamental knowledge has not discouraged the theorists. Speculation has flourished and numerous theories of creep have been proposed. A critical review of these theories reveals that, even though there are some general areas of agreement between the majority of the workers, there are many basic questions yet to be resolved.' It is generally conceded that theoretical speculation is far in advance of experimental evidence. The shortage of reliable creep data greatly hinders more rapid progress in this field. It is essential that the effects of different stresses and temperatures on the creep characteristics of metals be quantitatively determined. Once this has been accomplished, it will then be possible to evaluate the effects of alloying additions and, it is hoped, to provide a firm basis of facts for theoretical treatment of the creep phenomenon. The work reported herein was undertaken to determine the effects of such variables as stress, temperature, alloying, and structure on the creep characteristics of some metals. Material and Equipment Nickel was selected as the base material for the current investigation and an experimental program was initiated to determine the effects of temperature and stress on the creep characteristics of this material. Since a large quantity of high purity nickel was required for the proposed program and such material was not commercially available, it was decided to refine, cast, and prepare the required metal in our own laboratory. The resulting nickel test bars had the following composition, given in percentage by weight: Fe, 0.030 (1); Si, 0.003 (2); Ca, 0.001 (1); Mg, 0.020 (2); and S, 0.002 (2); to make total impurities of 0.056.
