Discussion of the paper of O. P. Hood, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2607 to 2611. R. V. Norris, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have had a little experience with gasoline locomotives and I want to indorse very strongly Mr. Hood's point with regard to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I think .the terrible danger is not fully realized. I was foolish enough some time ago, in investigating a gasoline locomotive, to attempt to walk out of the mine entry behind it, and for several days I felt very seriously the carbon monoxide effects. The use of gasoline locomotives ought to be confined to mine entries where there is a very large amount of air. One of the grave dangers is their great convenience and the temptation to run them into chambers for just a few moments to get a car or two. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently one of the great dangers is in the style of the gasoline engine. When my attention was. first directed to the type of gasoline locomotives which I saw in the foreign mines-France, Belgium, and Germany, I was most favorably impressed with them, and they have given no trouble on account of fumes, so far as I could learn. Large numbers of them were being used, but all were of small capacity, and of a kind in which the speed control is by a governor of the hit-or-miss type, the engine running continuously. Their power capacity was very low, if I remember correctly it was not over 4 or 5 h.p., but they were used under favorable conditions where the grades in the mines were slight, since the entries or tunnels bad a slight grade in favor of-the load, making about the same pull for the empties against the grade as for the load with the grade. I understand the hit-or-miss valve arrangement enables a setting that will give more perfect combustion than can be insured with the valve controlled by the operating man, as in the automobile type of valve and engine used in this country. Apparently the European type of locomotive does not have the capacity to permit use under the conditions existing in this country, where most of our entries or tunnels have variable grades and long heavy trips of mine cars are used.

The 48th convention of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, held in New York City recently, saw delegates vote funds for a new organizational drive expected to begin immediately. John Clark, union president, told members in his keynote speech, that the union would be in a better position to make demands if it extended its membership to all phases of the nonferrous -industry. He told the 250 delegates that union leaders have already laid extensive groundwork for the campaign. Clark said: "I am proposing here that we concentrate on organizing during this coming year. I am proposing that we throw a heavy amount of re sources in organizing. That means financial resources as well as re- sources of staff ."

The paper is a summary of information on Canadian deposits of uranium and thorium up to the end of 1948, prepared by geologists of Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd. and by the specialist on uranium deposits for the Geological Survey of Canada. The paper contains a history of Canadian uranium and thorium discoveries, a working classification of the deposits, fairly detailed descriptions of the Eldorado mine and of properties in northern Saskatchewan, and shorter accounts of several other discoveries.

The late Alexander Holley said, on returning from a careful study of the relative merits of the Bessemer and the open-hearth processes, as shown in the best European practice, that, in this country, the open-hearth process would live to attend the funeral of the Bessemer ; and he said this several years ago, when in this country the Bessemer plant and practice had been developed to far outstrip that abroad, and when, proportionately, it had reached an advancement much beyond the improvements in open-hearth plants and practice. At the same time, the prevailing idea in the metallurgical world, a few years ago, seemed to be in favor of the substitution of Bessemer for open-hearth steel for most of the higher qualities, and Bessemer enthusiasts loudly proclaimed, that as good steel for all purposes could be obtained by their favorite process as by the open-hearth. It was, in fact, confidently prophesied that very soon tool-steel and similar grades, which consumers had learned to specify, in ordering, to be made by the crucible process, would by common consent be made by the Bessemer, as best adapted to give the desired results. But these expectations have failed to materialize; not only do the crucible people keep on in the even tenor of their way and talk with pride of their comparatively large outputs of " hundreds " of tons per month, as usual, but the open-hearth people have kept fast hold of their original domain of nearly the entire amount of sheared plates, of locomotive tires, of large forgings, spring-steel, agricultural steel, steel castings and the like. Further, owing largely to one of the great advantages of the Bessemer process, which is also one of its inherent dangers, namely, its large output, it has also fallen into considerable disrepute for structural purposes. Not a few experienced engineers are now stipulating in their specifications that Bessemer steel will not be allowed to be used, especially for tension-members.

ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by [P OL, plotting So = Ao as a function of eo = Lo] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors' It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented [by plotting the average true stress, S = P as a function of e = q' = log o = log Log] where P, A, L, S, e, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such- curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. IN a study of the rate of decomposition of ½ -in. cubes of limestone, dolomitic limestone, and dolomite in a sweeping nitrogen atmosphere, Joseph, Beatty, and Bitsianesl found that the zone of calcination advanced at substantially a constant rate at a given temperature. The purpose of this paper is to show that their data indicate at least two processes occurring when the above carbonates decompose. It is suggested that there are two processes occurring temperature range and the other the limiting process over another temperature range. The data of Joseph and co-workers have been extended by use of the Arrhenius equation, Eq. 1, a relation beween the velocity constant k of a reaction and the absolute temperature T.

Field studies and laboratory research have established the fact that the expulsive force which drives petroleum into wells, from the reservoir sands in which it is stored by nature, is primarly an expression of the energy latent within compressed natural gas dissolved or occluded in, or otherwise associated with the oil. Each barrel of oil produced is forced into the recovery well by the expansive energy of a certain volume of compressed gas, originally stored with the oil in the pores of the reservoir rock; and each cubic foot of gas so produced with the oil and expanded to atmospheric pressure reduces by so much the total natural energy available for oil expulsion. This relationship between the volumes of gas and oil produced has seemed so important that petroleum production technolo-gists have come to regard the "gas-oil ratio," or the "gas factor" as it has been more conveniently termed, as a measure of oil-production efficiency. Different methods of oil recovery and production devices are now Com pared on this basis and estimates of ultimate recovery obtainable through their use are considered by many to be inversely proportional to the values of their respective gas factors. The writer has been among those who have given support to a widcspread movement toward a proper recognition of the significance of the gas factor as a guide in the control of producing oil wells, and does not wish to oppose its more extended application. It seems necessary, how-cvcr, in view of the almost elemental faith with which the principle of the gas factor has been received in many quarters, to point out that it is a most complex factor, and one which cannot be regarded as an absolute index of production efficiency without due regard to other contributing factors by which it is influenced to an important degree. Variables Influencing Gas Factor The mere recording of a low gas factor, obtained through the use of some method or device, does not necessarily imply efficient oil production; and conversely, a high gas factor does not always signify inefficient recov-

The hammer drill rightly receives the credit for having made the one-man drill possible, and so many economies seem possible through the proper application of :different types of hammer drills to various mining, quarrying, and, excavating operations, that an indication of the economies effected by the New Jersey Zinc Co. at its Franklin mines may be of pertinent interest. When this company commenced its trials of hammer drills in 1907, these tools had not I been developed to one-fourth the capacity and refinement which they have at present. At that time it was frequently stated that such a small tool, drilling holes of less diameter than the reciprocating rock drill, could not drill enough holes in a shift to permit the placing of sufficient explosive to break a tonnage of ore comparable with that produced by the"' rock drills;" that the placing of small holes inclined upward, at angles steeper than 40° above the horizontal, could not be expected to produce results equal to the large flat, wet or dry, holes in the breasted back of an overhand stope, and would only shatter the ground so as to make the back unsafe. In' spite of these adverse opinions, the hammer drills first showed their superiority over both heavy and light reciprocating drills in raising and in stoping, and then in drifting and quarry work. As a result, all of the reciprocating drills at the Franklin mines were scrapped, three years ago, all of the mining work being accomplished with increased efficiency, as shown in detail in this article. With the advent of the hammer drill in this property, it was considered advisable to make comparative tests of all the tools accessible, and it has since been the policy to investigate the merits of any advance of the drilling art in order to get the maximum amount of work from the tools. The necessity of devising some means of standardizing drill tests, and of measuring the consumption of compressed air as well as the drilling speed, was early realized.

The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.' They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes. Experimental equilibrium vaporization ratios were obtained for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane, and hydrogen sulfide in natural gas-condensate systems. Two different overall mixture compositions were investigated over the pressure range 500 to 4,000 psia at 100°, 150°, and 200 °F. Partial phase diagrams of the mixtures were obtained; one of these showed a critical point at 204°F and 3,875 psia. These and earlier data' were compared with the Kellogg correlation' at! 100°F and 1,000 psia. INTRODUCTION The authors' have presented equilibrium vaporization ratios for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane, and hydrogen sulfide in complex mixtures, such as natural gas-crude oil and natural gas-absorber oil. Since mixtures of the natural gas-condensate type also occur widely in petroleum reservoirs and often contain the non-hydrocarbons mentioned, it would be useful to have appropriate K data for calculating equilibrium vaporization conditions. Roland, Smith, and Kave-ler' obtained K's for methane and the light hydrocarbons in gas-condensate mixtures; and Poettmann and Katz3 obtained K's for carbon dioxide in a gas-condensate system. The data presented in this paper extend this coverage to include K's for nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide and phase diagrams for the experimental mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The equipment and experimental procedure was essentially as described previously, except for analysis of the vapor samples. The vapor sample bombs were filled at the pressure and temperature of the run. Immediately after sampling, a portion of this sample was flushed from the bomb into a 650 cc glass bulb, filling it to near atmospheric pressure. The sample in the glass bulb was then analyzed by the mass spectrometer. Some checks were made on this analytical procedure to find the accuracy of measurement of the C + content of the vapor samples. The modifications tried were complete fractionation of the vapor sample and the use of several liquids (depropanized condensate and retrograde liquid from several vapor samples) as calibrating materials for the mass spectrometer. The results obtained from these various checks differed by about 10 per cent relative and this is believed to be the order of accuracy of the vapor C+ concentrations.

Questionnaires and special letters soliciting information were sent to a great many geologists, petroleum engineers, independent operators, and representatives of large companies in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico. Replies to more than 50 per cent. of these letters were received. A survey of the facts and opinions presented in this correspondence will be made a little later, but first some of the general aspects of the problem will be reviewed. By "unit operation,"1 we mean the development and operation of a single entire pool, or reservoir, of petroleum by one management, on a systematic and scientific plan which is best calculated ultimately to extract from the pay sand and bring to the surface of the ground the largest possible amount of oil with the greatest possible total profit. No one, as far as the author has been able to ascertain, denies the advantages, both scientific and practical, of unit operation. All are agreed that it is sound in theory. It permits the proper distribution of wells, which should always be spaced on the ground according to a regular geometric plan with the intention of maintaining the same spacing all the way down and into the pay sand, or pay sands. This spacing will be different for different fields, depending on such variable factors as the lithologic character of the pay formation, the nature of the controlling structure, the depth of drilling, the viscosity of the oil, and so on. From the viewpoint of engineering practice, as applied to economical extraction of oil, there is no more important consideration than well spacing—well spacing in the pay formation, and not merely on the surface of the ground —for the method of well spacing has a direct bearing upon all such engineering practices as pressure control, repressuring by gas, the water drive, and SO on. Energy conservation has been the keyword in many plant expansions. Far many years, most of the phosphate industry has been dry grinding their phosphate rock. Agrico Chemical in Florida has recently been evaluating the wet grinding of phosphate rock, a process which eliminates a pre-dry stage for mill feed while allowing higher through- puts. This same company also plans to open a new phosphate facility in Louisiana that will use wet grinding in both ball mills. The Eveleth Expansion Co.'s Fairlane concentrator will have the largest rod and ball mills in the US mining industry. The plant will consist of three lines, each with one rod mill and one ball mill, and will process 464 ltph. The rod mills will be 15 x 20% ft, drawing 2035 hp. The ball mills will be 17 x 41½ ft, drawing 6900 hp and driven by dual 3000- hp motors. The plant is scheduled for startup in the fall of 1976.

Operations of these two mining companies have some superficial similarities-geographical location, production rates, comparatively large ore reserves; but any critical comparison of mining and milling procedures or of economics must take into account the striking differences in geological environment and mineralogy of the respective ore deposits. The properties are only about 20 miles apart on an upland surface of moderate relief (part of the Interior Plateau of central B. C.) which occupies an area east of Thompson River between the towns of Ashcroft and Merritt. Being in the "dry belt" of British Columbia, water conservation is necessary at both operations.

AT A MEETING of the Shareholders of the Russo-Asiatic Cons. Ltd., in London, Oct. 23, 1922, LESLIE URQUHART, chairman of the com- pany made the following statement:* I come now to our recent negotiations with the Soviet Government and to the agreement which has resulted from them. You will remember that the conference at The Hague broke up without having achieved anything very definite. It was not, however, a failure. It elicited from M. Litvinoff an offer which will, I think, come to be regarded as a milestone in the progress of Russia from a ruinous and unpracticable Communism towards a modified form of capitalism. The offer made by M. Litvinoff at The Hague amounted in effect to this: that in return for political recognition on our part the Soviet Government would first acknowl-edge its liability for Russia's national foreign debts, and, secondly, would give the original foreign owners of property in Russia effective compensation. A very great advance that. It showed-and there have been many other signs to confirm it-how real and persistent has been the internal evolution of Russia during the past year from Marxism to the economics of the Western world. I will not now detain you with the reasons why M. Litvinoff's highly promising and significant offer came to nothing. The fact that it had been made and the further fact that The Hague Conference had separated indefinitely were the important things. The first fact seemed to indicate that the Soviet rulers, after all, proved to be people with whom one could do business. The second fact rather emphatically showed that the way to do business with them was not by unwieldy poly-glot conferences of ministers, officials and experts representing a few dozen different governments and a few dozen different sets of national interests. That method had been tried at Genoa. It was tried again at The Hague. Each time it failed, and having failed it left the road clear for a simpler and more direct approach.

The effect of hydrogen pretreatment of alumina, magnesia, and zirconia crucibles on reduced oxygen levels in iron charges has been studied. Hydrogen treatment of commercial high-purity magnesia crucibles was observed to produce as high as 70 pct reduction in oxygen content in iron melts. Hydrogen treatment of the commercial high-purity grade zirconia crucibles produced a 25 pct reduction in oxygen levels in iron melts. An average reduction of Knoop hardness of 47 pct was recorded on the iron charges melted in hydrogen-treated crucibles. On the basis of the experiments and the free-energy diagram, it appears that the major source of reducible oxygen to the iron charge is the suboxides and impurity oxides rather than the major oxide of the crucible. Suitable pretreatment of the crucibles to reduce and remove these oxides yields low oxygen levels in iron melted in the crucibles. DURING the last decade, attempts to produce more pure and uniform alloyed metals have brought about the development of many new melting techniques. Notable among these are vacuum-induction melting, inert and consumable-electrode melting, the cold-mold technique, and numerous techniques for removal of impurities by chemical reaction. However great the achievements in this field, metals must still be melted in contact with media of varying reactivity; i.e., gas, ceramic, and slag. Studies have been made to attain an understanding of the reactions that take place during melting, including slag-metal reactions and equilibria, equilibrium of hydrogen and water vapor, and carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide with oxygen in molten iron. These reactions have been treated quite thoroughly. There is one condition, however, that has been widely overlooked, and, to the author's knowledge, only cursive investigation has been made of it. This is the reaction between the ceramic crucible material and the iron charge. In recent years, Hadley and Bianchi' made a series of studies on hydrogen deoxidation of iron in magnesia crucibles. Bianchi2 studied crucible-FeO equilibria in the temperature range 1525°to 1650°C in high vacuum with, however, inconsistent results. Richardson and Jeffes3 in their series of articles on thermodynamic reactions in the making of iron and steel refer to Wentrup and Hieber's4 work on iron and aluminum deoxidation. Their pork included melting iron in alumina crucibles and measuring the aluminum and oxygen content in the iron. Because of the low values obtained, question has arisen of their analytical accuracy.3 Dastur and chipman5 obtained values on hydrogen-oxygen equilibrium in molten iron contained in alumina crucibles similar to those obtained in experiments in the present program. Hochmann6 studied removal of impurities in chromium irons in high vacuum. His results with respect to oxygen level in chromium-iron melted in magnesia crucibles are consistent with results we have obtained.

Introduction Dust from cutter machines and face drills is controlled in most mines by water. However, the large quantities of water used in metal and coal mines for dust control and suppression pose serious operational problems in water soluble ores, such as salt, trona, or gypsum. This paper reviews the strategies to suppress and collect dust on cutter machines and face drills where water usage must be restricted to very low flow rates - typically 3.78 L/min (1 gpm) or less.

The term chromite is often used to cover all chrome ores and concentrates which are the designations actually employed by most industrial users and producers. Chromite is, of course, the predominant mineral in chrome ores which are aggregates of chromite and gangue minerals, most commonly magnesian silicates. Most chrome ores now used are petrographically chromitites which is a rock, rather than an individual mineral term. The title of this chapter, following past usage, is meant in the broad sense. Chromite is the only primary commercial source of chromium. This book is intended to deal only with nonmetallic minerals and rocks. Chromite uses are both metallic (ferroalloys) and nonmetallic (refractories and chemicals), but any discussion of mineralogy, geology, and mining is common for all types. A number of the major commercial ores are interchangeable, and their uses are determined by economic considerations. Mineralogy COMPOSITION [Chromite is a term embracing a wide range of chromium-bearing spinel*-group minerals the compositions of which can be expressed as (Mg,Fe2+)0.(Cr,AI,Fe3+ )203.t This can be further generalized to R2+O.R23+03 and the molecular RO: R,03 ratio is generally close to one. The exact composition may be arbitrarily expressed as a solid solution of six end-members, MgAI2O4, MgCr2O4, MgFe2O4 FeCr2O4, FeA12O4, and Fe2+.Fe23+04 with the proportions of each stated or plotted in the six-cornered prism of Johnston and Stevens61 or this scheme may be simplified to comprise only three endmembers making up a composition triangle, Fig 1. THE Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-concrete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made, the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard' were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to Mr. W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty.
