A simplified model for the theory of reaction rates near equilibrium has been applied to the reduction of wustite. A linear relationship between the net rate of reaction and the Gibbs free-energy change, ?F, is predicted. The reduction of wustite in H2 -H2O gas mixtures was studied with a microbalance technique at temperatures from 850° to 950 °C. The predicted model was found to be valid to -?F/RT = 0.1 or approximately -200 cal per mole away from equilibrium. ThE theory of reaction rates near equilibrium has been developed by a number of authors. Prigogine, Outer, and Herbo1 have studied the catalytic hydrogena tion of benzene in an attempt to deduce some intrinsic connection between reaction rates near equilibrium and thermodynamics. Manes, Hofer, and weller2 have derived more general expressions for reaction rates near equilibrium from classical thermodynamics. Hollingsworth3,4 has commented briefly on the work of Manes et al. Benson5 has summarized in a general way the results of the earlier contributions. It is the purpose of this paper to apply the theory of reaction rates near equilibrium specifically to the reduction of wustite in H2-H2O gas mixtures. The basic premise is that the reduction of wustite proceeds by a surface reaction, rather than by solid-state diffusion ,or gaseous diffusion. Richardson and Dancy6 and Gellner and Richardson7 have suggested that the reduction of wustite may be governed by iron diffusion in wustite. Mckewan8-11 has proposed that reduced iron layers on various oxides are sufficiently porous to offer a negligible impedance to the reducing gas. The linear motion of interfaces reported by McKewan and discussed by Themelis and Gauvin12 indicates the lack of diffusive control during reduction. The reduction studies of magnetite reported by Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis13 give additional evidence that reduction rates are linear when the reaction products are porous and nonprotective. The interpretation of measurements reported in this paper is predicated upon a surface-controlled reduction reaction, at least in the earliest stages of reduction when the reduced iron layer is thin.

This paper presents geological data regarding deposits of over 7,500,000 tons of fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue. A series of pyroclastics and arkoses was intruded by sills of quartz porphyry in connection with batholithic intrusions of granite 3 miles from Buchans. Gentle folding, with fracturing and shearing of tuff beds and intruded quartz porphyry, accompanied and followed the intrusion of granite and porphyry. The sulphide-barite mineralization is localized primarily in fractured and sheared tuff beds, but also in the sheared quartz porphyry. Two structures have proved particularly favorable for mineralization—one, the center of an anticline; the other, a series of weak, incompetent tuff beds intruded by thin sills of quartz porphyry and located between strong beds of arkose. During the folding the weak tuff with intruded quartz porphyry was intensely sheared and contorted and subsequently mineralized by sulphides and barite. Introduction Buchans is 5 miles north of Red Indian Lake, in Central Newfoundland, at an elevation of 900 ft. above sea level and 400 ft. above Red Indian Lake, and is reached by a 37-mile private railway from Miller-town Junction. The first ore body found at Buchans was discovered some 30 years ago in the bed of Buchans River, by Matty Mitchell, an Indian woodsman employed by the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co. Ltd. In the years following the discovery the ore was developed by shaft-sinking and drifting, with results indicating a lenticular ore body in a shear zone, containing about 100,000 tons of extremely fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn. Because a profitable metallurgical treatment for the ore was not found, the mine was closed down in 1911. In 1915, Mr. H. A. Guess, Vice President of the American Smelting & Refining Co., learned of the Buchans River ore body, and after metallurgical tests had been carried on from time to time in his company's testing plant a satisfactory separation of the sulphides by selective flotation was finally effected in 1925. The widespread interest shown during the past year in the study of subsurface pressures warrants brief reference to its early development. Though it is impossible to set an exact date when constructive thinking on the subject first began, nevertheless, evidence is available that thought was given to the problem as far back as 16 or 1.7 years ago. There is record in one of the foreign journals of actual subsurface tests made by crude methods in one of the Rumanian fields in 1918 and 1919.' These tests were performed in conjunction with studies made on wells produced by bailing and, incidentally, the final outcome of the work led to the development of the so-called "duplex bailer" which is reputed to have trebled volumetric bailing efficiency. From this time on to 1927 a few scattered bottom-hole pressure determinations were made with makeshift instruments of one form or another, but probably not until 1927 was any great amount of concerted effort directed to the subject. At this fall meeting of the Petroleum Division four years ago was presented one of the first papers2 to appear in this country written for the express intent of advocating the value and importance of subsurface pressure determinations. It is thought to have been the first to present direct data on subsurface pressures obtained through the use of a specially designed recording instrument. As might be expected, the instrument had its limitations, but reasonably accurate results were obtained and, to say the least, it constituted a progressive step in the right direction. During the period from 1927 to 1931, many noteworthy improvements were made in the design and perfection of subsurface pressure instruments suitable to meet all conditions. Because of the magnitude of this task much credit is due the men who pioneered this work. They should feel a keen sense of satisfaction in the thought that their efforts have paved the way for the continuation of this most valuable study. PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. In the southern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, many of the coal seams dip at angles of 40" to 50" from the horizontal. For transportation purposes, "tunnels" are driven across the coal measures and, occasionally, "rock gangways," beside the seams and parallel with them. The use of gangways driven in country rock appears to be increasing, as they avoid the maintenance of long gangways in coal, which eventually are driven to the colliery boundaries, and permit mining from a number of intermediate blocks without interference. The rock consists of slates or sandstones of moderate hardness, which may range into very hard, highly siliceous, fine-grained conglomerates. In this distinctly bedded formation, the direction of the heading, whether parallel with or across the structure, makes it necessary to distribute the drill holes in a different pattern to break the ground, but does not change loading conditions. In 1932, practically all the mucking was done by hand, and it was the established custom to use four men on two drills for drilling and breaking the ground, and five for loading it out. A driver and mule was needed in addition, to assemble the rock cars at a siding or branching track in the rear, pending their final disposal. This might occupy the driver's whole time, or if the length of haul were short, he might be able to do other useful work. It was thought possible in 1932 to reduce the cost of driving such headings in rock by mechanical loading, and to investigate this subject a scraper loader was used in a section of tunnel then being driven. Operations while driving 195 ft. of this tunnel using a scraper loader were carefully observed. Time studies were made of the loading, and records made of the routine of breaking ground, but not in such detail. Tunnels or gangways in the colliery are 7 ft. high above the rails, by 10 ft. wide, which requires a minimum of 8 ft. in height, broken to allow for rails and ties. This cross section is of sufficient size to permit the use of any one of several types of power loaders, but for this demonstration it was found most convenient to use a scraper loader.

The partial molal free energy of Cd in each of the four intermediate phases, Cd3 Cu, Cd8 Cu5, Cd3Cu4, and CdCu2 is determined using the Knudsen vapor pressure technique. Measurements are made also within the two-phase regions, and thus the variation in FCd is now known across the entire phase diagram. The absolute values are all less the 2.0 kcal and increase regularly with increasing Cd concentration. The small absolute value of the free energy precludes the possibility of obtaining highly accurate values; nevertheless, the results are compatible with those previously reported for the liquid phase. Additional results are reported concerning the lattice parameters of the 6, E, and b phases. THE elements Cu and Cd combine to form four intermediate phases which are designated* and E and which include respectively the following inter metallic compounds: CdCu2, Cd3Cu4, Cd3 Cu5, and Cd3 Cu. The extent of each phase with respect to temperature and composition is shown in Fig. 1 which is the equilibrium diagram drawn according to Hansen.1 All four phases are brittle, and most probably are true intermetallic compounds. Only the crystal structure of the 6 phase has been thoroughly investigated.2,3 The structure is cubic and isotypic with y brass. The structure of Cd3 Cu has not been previously reported, It is hexagonal with a = 8.11 and c = 8.76 0.02Å and the structure is presently being determined.* The compounds Cd3 Cu4 and CdCu, have been each previously the subject of a single investigation. Cd3Cu, is presumed to be cubic4 with the space group Fd3m, whereas CdCu2 is hexagonal2 with the C14-type structure. Cu2 Cd is found by X-ray analysis to be hexagonat with lattice parameters a = 5.00A and c = 16.17Å. The material appears to be pure Cu2Cd as all reflections could be indexed on the basis of the single hexagonal structure. These values disagree with those of Kripyakevich and coworkers5 who report a = 4.96Å and c = 7.98Å. Their investi-

ALTHOUGH it is universally accepted that free oxygen is A necessary in a cyanide solution for the dissolution of gold and silver-in accordance with Elsner's equation that 2Au + 4KCN + 0 + H20 = 2KAu (CN), + 2KOH- little has been written and insufficient attention paid to the drop in extraction due apparently to loss of dissolved oxygen in mill solutions. Aeration or oxygenation of cyanide solutions has been more or less successfully accomplished by various types of agitators such as the Dorr (with or without air lifts), Pachuca tanks and more recently "Turbo-mixers" and Denver "Super- agitators"; also by the introduction of chemical oxidizing agents such as Solozone (Na,O,) . At the Wright-Hargreaves and other mines in the Kirkland Lake camp, the introduction of this reagent at the rate of about 1.25 oz. per ton of ore applied to the feed of the ball mills has certainly been beneficial.

During the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth—why and how it occurs—were treated in papers by Howe,' .Jeffries,² Sauveur,² Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 Mc Adam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,l0 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size sperified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filamentsl1 wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,'? in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels,14'15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is

The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. From 1901 through 1920 barite mining was on a seemingly prosperous basis and a large tonnage was shipped from the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain areas. With the depression of 1920 the industry began to decline and production practically ceased in 1926. Geology of the Barite Areas In the Hot Springs area barite is found in the Max Patch granite of Archean age and the Snowbird formation of Cambrian age. The Max Patch granite is of two varieties, one gray to whitish and the other red. The gray granite is coarse, at times porphyritic, and composed of quartz, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar, with a little biotite and muscovite. The red granite is also coarse and differs from the other only in having conspicuous pink and red feldspar. Both varieties have been much metamorphosed and weathered in places, so that they contain secondary

In the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, mine fires occur with more or less regularity and their existence is an ever-present hazard in coal mining. In all probability 90 per cent. of the mine fires can be ascribed directly or indirectly to the ordinary miner's open lamp. Other causes may be smoking, electrical installations, gas explosions, gas feeders, and the communication of fire to the outcrops from ash dumps, culm banks, timber and brush fires. Fires in pump rooms, engine rooms, and barns have been largely eliminated as a result of the Act of Assembly, approved June 15, 1911, which provides that all inside buildings, including engine rooms, pump rooms, barns, etc., shall be constructed of incombustible materials. Smoking of pipes, cigars, and cigarettes should be prohibited in the mines and too much care cannot be exercised in preventing fires by enforcing all rules designed for that purpose. Mine fires that involve underground fighting are invariably dangerous, and all fires, irrespective of the method pursued in extinguishing them, involve property loss and expense. Each fire generally presents a more or less original problem, dependent on the particular conditions. Generally mine fires may be divided into two classes: Those occurring in inaccessible workings and those occurring in accessible workings. The methods pursued in extinguishing or controlling mine fires are as follows: (I) direct attack, (2) smothering by sealing, (3) flushing with silt or other solids, (4) flooding with water, (5) cutting off, (6) surrounding with incombustible materials, (7) digging out by stripping from the surface. Most fires arc extinguished in their incipiency by direct attack and failure to extinguish by this method is due to late discovery, lack of water, and facilities for fighting, or improper procedure in the initial attack. Should the method first pursued be unsuccessful, careful consideration should be given in determining next the method to be adopted; then the work should be carried on as rapidly as possible and under the supervision of the most competent persons. Materials and supplies should be furnished without delay and in sufficient quantities for the work to be accomplished.

THE Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barcenite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. INTRODUCTION The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarello,2 Mactear3 and Merrill4 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Barcena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. LOCATION The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). The development of "fiber" or preferred orientations, during the plastic deformation of metals, and the relation of such structures to the anisotropic characteristics of worked metals has become a subject of common knowledge among metallurgists. Very little has been published, however, relative to variations existent throughout the cross-sections of rolled strips,1 and the influence that such variations may have. This paper presents such a study on a rolled zinc alloy.2 The significance of small differences in surface structure is shown in relation to bending properties. Experience with zinc and its alloys has shown that the outer radius of the bend, which is subject to tensile deformation, is the common region of failure. In considering relations of structural characteristics to bending properties it will suffice, therefore, to consider the ease and possible extent of tensile deformation resulting from various orientations. It is necessary in this connection to assume that on the average the individual crystals of a polycrystalline material act substantially as if their movements were unobstructed by the surrounding grains. This assumption is not strictly valid, but the error involved is unlikely to affect seriously the qualitative conclusions derived from its use. Curiously enough, considering the relative accessibility of the two places, coal was reported at an earlier date in Saskatchewan than in British Columbia. Henry and Thompson were on the Saskatchewan River in February 1811, and on the 4th of that month recorded, while on Jack's Branch of North Brook, "I observed in one of the bends on the north side a bank of yellow clay, on which there appeared several horizontal veins of pure coal, of the best quality I have seen along this river." Later at Rocky Mountain House it was said: "a quantity of coal is tumbling into the water, as the current washes away the earth underneath. This coal abounds along the Saskatchewan, in some places forming solid beds several feet thick for several acres, which are washed by the river. In its pure state our smiths use it for the forge with equal proportions of charcoal made of birch or aspen, which answers every purpose for making and repairing our axles and other tools."1 It is needless to say that it was many years before this coal was used for any commercial purposes. Coal was first found on the northern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1835 at Beaver Harbor, where later Fort Rupert was established, where Indians had advised some of the Hudson Bay Company officials it would be found.2 The coal was used by smiths, and later on by the steamer plying along the coast.3 A report to the government in 1845 called attention to the coal reported in the neighborhood of Puget Sound and on the Cowlitz River, and that probably the samples used by the Hudson's Bay Company were obtained from the surface and. were not good. On September 7, 1846 a report on the coal situation was submitted by Ogden and Douglas, and a naval vessel was sent to investigate the report and was loaded with 62 tons dug out by the Indians, the seam outcropping along the shore.2 In 1847 some samples were sent to England by a returning war vessel. The drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of IIO ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. Geology The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 4.5° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelson-ite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more pronounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,' the TiO2 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. Sampling Methods and Procedure During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. Only under certain conditions, and by employing a most careful and rigid sampling technique, is this pos sible. There must be no loss of the water circulating in the hole, and the velocity

ONLY recently has it been realized that preferred orientations are common in hot-rolled steels. In a recent paper, N. P. Goss1 stated that hot-rolled mild steel exhibits a texture different from that charac-teristic of cold-rolled steel. No complete study of these hot-rolling textures has been reported using the pole-figure method of Wever. The material used in the work reported in this paper was the same material used by Gensamer and Mehl2 in a recent study of preferred orientations in cold-rolled steel, to which reference may be made for the composition and thermal history of the steel. Automobile-body sheet bar, 4 in. thick was hot-rolled at two temperatures, 780° and 910° C. (1436° and 1669° F.). (These temperatures refer to the tempera-ture of the furnace in which the steel was heated.) After each pass the steel was returned to the furnace and held there long enough to return to temperature. Although no accurate method was used to measure the temperature after each pass, it was estimated by color that only a slight drop in temperature occurred. In order to determine the effect of any preferred orientation that might have persisted through the normalizing treatment, one specimen at each temperature was rolled in the same direction as the original working direction and the other at right angles to it. The total reduction in each case was 85 per cent, the specimens having been reduced from 0.250 to 0.0375 in. in five passes. Final cooling was in air. Pinhole reflection photograms were taken of all four specimens, with the rolling direction vertical and the X-ray beam at an angle of 7° with the transverse direction (the transverse direction is defined as that direction in the rolling plane perpendicular to the rolling direction). These photograms, taken with a Me target at 35 kv., are reproduced in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Much has been written on milling and cyanidation as practiced on this gold field, therefore the purpose of this paper is to record its development only briefly and to describe in more detail the contemporary state of the science and art of this branch of metallurgy. It is a pleasing task, because a steady evolution is to be recorded. Definite trends influenced the development. Some have the stamp of original thought and observation; many have been achieved from a logical sequence of planned experimentation and research; while others have resulted from the drive of sheer necessity. The large scale of operations and capital outlay has compelled conservative progress. Banket ORe For a better understanding, a review of the characteristics of the ore may not be out of place. The Witwatersrand gold ore is named "banket" from the similarity of the oxidized outcrop ore to the Boer almond cake of that name. The inter bedded orebody is commonly called "reef." It is a conglomerate composed of various sizes of pebbles, principally non-gold-bearing white quartz, which constitute about 70 per cent of the bulk, within a matrix of cementing material consisting of fine-grained quartz, sericite, chlorite and chloritoid and containing the precious metals and mineral sulfides. Argillaceous components in the mil pulp may be as high as 32 per cent. Of the sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite are predominant. Most base-metal sulfides are present, but sporadically and generally only found in highly concentrated mill products. In the latter, osmiridium is recovered in varying amounts; from 1 oz. in 3000 tons to 1 oz. in 10,000 tons of ore. Most of the oxidized ore has been mined, so milling is confined principally to the sulfide ore. A typical analysis of sulfide ore is: silica (SiO2), 86.76 per cent; pyritc (FeS2), 2.75; ferric oxide (Fe2o3), 2.65; alumina (Al2o3), 6.91; lime (CaO), tr.; magnesia (MgO), 0.70; sp. gr., 2.7. Milling grade at present price of gold (137 shillings per ounce) varies from 3.5 to 8.5 dwt., with one mine milling ore as high as 16 dwt. The
