STORAGE of natural gas in underground reservoirs is one of the most important developments in the natural gas industry in recent years. However, it is only when we consider this development together with proved fuel reserves, the know-how of the fuel technologist, and the possibility of making manufactured gas available over large areas, that we begin to appreciate fully the impact that underground storage of gas may have on the future growth and development of large areas in the United States. During the past winter, shortages of natural gas in the industrial East were given wide publicity and domestic consumers were requested to reduce their requirements to a minimum, so that war plants might have sufficient gas to continue operations. Curtailments would have been more drastic except for the fact that large volumes of natural gas had previously been stored in underground reservoirs. Storage of natural gas in depleted or partly depleted gas or oil sands is not new, having originally been tried, as far as I know, about 1915. About five or ten years later an attempt was made to store manufactured gas in a depleted gas sand. This proved unsuccessful at first because the gas was not properly cleaned and the impurities plugged the pores in the sand.

AN extensive recent trip throughout the mining districts of the Southwest, Central West, an Northwest,' reveals a numbes of interesting conditions that have influenced operators, in both large and small mills, to modify their flow sheets insofar as they pertain to crushing and grinding. The changes made and planned for the future should be of interest. It is interesting to note when traveling through the country, how ideas change and practice is modified, and it is rather amusing to see how milling methods seem to run, more or less, in cycles. New ideas and developments are brought about which run through the industry and are taken up by many of the best and most well informed operators. Some of them will change, sooner or later, back to their old practice; for, like everything .else, what will work well in one place will not necessarily be suited to another. On the other hand, it is often difficult to establish. other practices known to be of value, owing to the natural resistance to make a change, but on the whole, the western mill men seem to be more alive to possible benefits of various modifications than any other engineers with whom I have come in contact in all parts of the world. Mill men in other parts of the world always keep in con- tact with what is being done in the western part of the United States, but it does not necessarily follow that those in the western part of the United States are always right. Some of these changes that have been made and afterward abandoned will be referred to later.

The brittle fracture behavior of cold-worked sintered tungsten was studied over the temperature range 4.2° to 298°K using a high-sensitivity strain measuring system and electronfractography. Similar observations were made on a swaged electron beam zone-refined monocrystal. In sintered tungsten irreversible plastic deformation was observed during cyclic load-unload tests at stress levels well below the fracture stress for all temperatures, but general microyielding could be detected only down to 202°K. For the zone-refined samples macroyielding occurred at all test temperatures with evidence for twinning below -202°K. The fracture stress of the sintered tmgsten was virtually independent of temperature, while the zone-refined crystal showed a 2.3 times increase over the same temperature range. Electronfractography confirmed the presence of numerous rod-shaped and spherical submicroscopic voids which ranged in diameter from 1400 to 4300A in the sintered tungsten; no voids could be found in the zone-refined tungsten. Contrast effects observed on the replicas in the vicinity of certain voids indicated that plastic deformation could be induced by the local stress concentration. It has been suggested that the presence of these voids may be responsible for the low-temperature brittle failure of sintered tungsten. Based m this suggestim und on the evidence obtained here, a dislocatim model is presented to account for the brittle behavior of sintered tungsten. In this model slip, which is induced by the local high stress concentration in the region at the edge of a favorably oriented void, could cause the void to grow to a microcrack of critical size. STUDIES of brittle fracture in bcc metals have led to the well-known experimental relationships between grain size, yield stress, fracture stress, and temperature which have formed the basis for the various dislocation pile-up1-3 or interaction4'= models for slip-induced microcrack nucleation. While microcracks can be nucleated by deformation twins,6,7 there has been no direct evidence furnished by transmission electron microscopy to support conclusively either the Zener pile-up or Cottrell dislocation reaction models for producing micro-cracks in all "brittle" materials. In addition to the "inverse" grain size relationship for yield and fracture stresses the cottrel14 theory predicts that the fracture stress below the transition temperature should behave in a fashion similar to that of the yield stress above this temperature. Such behavior has been verified for several bcc metals.8-10 With reference to both grain size effects and the tem- perature dependence of the fracture stress below the transition temperature, the behavior of sintered tungsten appears anomalous. Early work by Bechtold and Shewrnon 11 showed no apparent temperature dependence of the fracture stress below the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). They attributed this result to the intergranular nature of the fractures observed. More recent work by Wronski and Four-deux12'13 on considerably purer material did not show any systematic relationship between the fracture stress and temperature below DBTT. The dependence of flow and fracture stresses on grain size is also not clearly established for sintered tungsten. Koo, for example, has shown that the DBTT for sintered tungsten depended chiefly on the annealing temperature and was relatively insensitive to the actual grain size achieved. Using electrofractography and transmission electron microscopy, Wronski and Fourdeuxl3 showed that numerous spherical and rod-shaped submicroscopic voids could be found in sintered tungsten but not in melted tungsten of nominally the same purity. They suggested that these voids could be responsible for the temperature insensitivity of the fracture stress below the DBTT. In the present work the temperature dependence of the fracture stress for high-purity commercially sintered tungsten has been determined. The presence of submicroscopic voids in sintered materials was confirmed, and these were studied in detail to examine the role they could play in nucleating brittle fracture. A dislocation model is suggested which could cause an inherent spherical void to lengthen into a Griffith crack of critical size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercially sintered tungsten rod was obtained in the as-swaged condition from Sylvania. A zone-refined crystal was obtained from the same source. This crystal was grown by giving three zone passes (at 25.4 cm per hr) to a sintered rod of high-purity tungsten. The rod axis prior to cold working was -15 deg from the [110] direction. Originally the zone-refined rod was -6 mm in diam; it was reduced to -3 mm by eight swaging passes, at high temperatures, with each step having about the same reduction of area. The final swaging step gave a 7.5 pct reduction of area at 1050°C. All swaging operations were performed in a hydrogen atmosphere. For the sintered rod a similar working schedule was employed. Metal-lographic examination of the sintered material revealed that the cold-worked structure had an apparent grain diameter of -25 u transverse to the swaging direction (obtained by the intercept method). In the longitudinal direction cold-worked grains were approximately 1.5 to 2 times their diameter. No distinct fiber structure could be observed optically for the zone-refined rod. The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and resultant notch-bar rupture life of ZNCONEL alloys X- 750 and 718 was studied. It was found that the primary effect of heat treatment in rendering these alloys notch-ductile is the elimination of any y' denuded zone adjacent to the pain boundaries. The mechanisms by which such a denuded zone can arise and be eliminated by heat treatment are discussed. InCONEL Ni-Cr alloy X-750 and INCONEL Ni-Cr alloy 718 are age-hardenable austenitic materials. Alloy X-750 is used for its corrosion and oxidation resistance and high creep-rupture strength up to 1500°F. Alloy 718 is used most effectively up to 1300°F. One of the most important areas in their development has been establishment of consistently good rupture properties, especially in the presence of a stress concentration, such as imposed by a notch. A desire to improve these properties has led to extensive studies of the effect of heat treatment on the micro structure of these alloys and their performance in stress-rupture tests. The coastal Cordillera around the Panama basin is made up of a Cu-rich tholeiitic volcanic belt representing either immature, late Mesozoic, island arc, or oceanic ridge. The same belt is exposed (uplifted) along the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental of Ecuador and Colombia. Ni-lateritic, Cr-podiform, and Pt-(Au) placer deposits are formed there after or within ultramafic bodies of oceanic association. Younger calc-alkaline igneous activity provided the mechanism for porphyry copper and associated ore formation. This Cu (+Mo) mineralization occurs along a narrow belt exposed by the erosion of the volcanic cap. Ag-Pb-Zn(-Au) and Hg volcanogenic mineralizations occur within the calc-alkaline belt, but slightly eastward and only above the copper belt. To the east and in the Venezuelan Andes, Paleozoic and older sediments, volcanics, and metamorphics contain volcanogenic massive sulfide, Pb-Zn, Au, and Cu sedimentary and vein deposits, and sedimentary iron ore and phosphate. The Cenozoic Cu, Ni-Pt-Cr and a portion of Ag-Pb-Zn, Hg, and Au mineralizations occur within or just above the oceanic basement whereas the eastern- most Cenozoic Ag-Pb-Zn mineralizations occur within and above a pre-Cenozoic sialic basement. This continental crust is the northern extension of the Peru-Chilean Andes where no oceanic crust has been preserved, however. Cenozoic metallogeny and subduction relationships are unclear in the Northern Andes. Yet strong structural volcanogenic ore controls exists apparently due to deep strike-slip movement between two plates.

The combination of the following two exothermic reactions was studied with the purpose of recovering H2 from H2S formed in acid leaching of sulfide ores, direct reduction of metal sulfides with H2 or desulfurization of crude oils: In the kinetic study of the recovery of H2, the reaction rate was measured by the two methods of single-stage and circulation blowing of H2S through molten Pb in the temperature range of 550 to 750°C. The experimental results showed that the rate determining step is in the chemical reaction itself and also that this reaction is accelerated markedly by the addition of a trace of Ni, which may be responsible for the catalytic action of Ni dissolved in molten Pb. In the experiments where Pb metal was produced, PbS was oxidized in a stream of atmospheric N2 containing 0.5 to 20 vol-% 02 or in the same 02 partial pressures as in N2 though under reduced pressures in the temperature range of 400 to 800°C. It was found from these experiments that the formation of PbSO4, basic sulfates and PbO are suppressable to yield Pb metal alone above 750°C and for 02 concentrations of less than 1 vol-%. Vapor of PbS was thought to take an important part in the Pb formation mechanism, and the probability thereof was demonstrated thermodynamically.

FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

IN principle, production of salt from sea water is a simple operation. Sea water is trapped in ponds, the sun and wind cause evaporation of the water, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production of solar salt, however, requires a careful consideration of many factors. Obviously, sufficient evaporation must take place throughout the making season to produce an economically adequate crop. Other factors are density of soil, contour of ground, height of ground above sea level, minimum dilution from fresh-water streams, and distance from market. Unfortunately, in the United States the localities of greatest evaporation, allowing for the other factors, are not the most suitable for the manufacture of sea salt by solar evaporation. It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our Our As a matter of fact, our present industrial civilization has been made possible through the use of the

GEORGE OTIS SMITH, the Institute's new presi-dent, continues the long tradition of close asso-ciation between the organization and economic geology. Several preceding presidents have been eco-nomic geologists, and a gen-erous share of space in the TRANSACTIONS has always been devoted to that subject, one of critical importance to the miner as well as the seeker for ore. Mr. Smith has long served the Institute, hav-ing been a director since 1921 and first vice-president since 1927. He was born in Hodg-don, Me., on Feb. 22, 1871, and graduated at Colby College, where he took his A.B. and A.M. He did graduate work at Johns Hopkins, where he re-ceived a Ph.D. in 1896. Meanwhile he had engaged in field geological work in Michi-gan, Utah and Washington with the Geological Survey. In 1896 he joined the regular staff of that organization, be-coming director in 1907. He has been with the Survey con-tinuously since he first joined, with the exception of one year when he was furloughed to serve as a member of the U. S. Coal Commission. His special interest for many years has been in the eco-nomic aspects, in the larger sense, of the mineral in-dustry, matters that are necessarily the subject of strong differences of opinion, but which he has dis-cussed with good temper though with full adherence to his strong con-victions.

This paper presents the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return project in the Lower Pawelek reservoir of the Falls City Field, Karnes County, Southwest Texas. Production is from the Lower Wilcox section at an average depth of 6,030 ft on the downthrown side of a "down to the coast" fault. Of particular interest is that the reservoir oil is high gravity and low viscosity but far undersaturated with gas at the original reservoir pressure and temperature. The early pressure and production history indicated only a partial or limited water drive, and this fact, coupled with the characteristics of the reservoir fluid and artificial lifting problem.. made advisable the water injection program to maintain reservoir pressure. The paper includes a description of the reservoir and reservoir fluids, the pressure and production history, a description of the water injection facilities, and the results of reservoir calculations involving Hurst's unsteady state flow and the material balance equations for calculation of water influx and prediction of the pressure-production relationship at various rates of withdrawal. The reservoir calculations and initial field results indicate that reservoir pressures in excess of 85 per cent of original pressure can be maintained by control of water injection even at very high rates of production. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return program in the Lower Pawelek reservoir, Falls City Field, Karnes County. Texas, and to calculate an empirical relationship between pressure and production in this limited or partial water drive reservoir. Location The Falls City Field (Fig. 1) is located two miles north of the town of Falls City in Karnes County, Texas, and is approximately 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on U. S. Highway 181. Discovery and Development The initial block of leases was taken after a surface geological survey identified a major east-west fault and closure on the south or downthrown section. The discovery well, Southern Minerals Corporation's Joe F. Bartosch 1; was completed at 4,650 ft in the Lower Bartosch sand in December, 1944. Drilling was continuous until December, 1946, and resulted in the discovery of 12 oil reservoirs between 4,600 and 6,050 ft in the Middle and Lower Wilcox formations. The San Manuel district of Arizona was first prospected prior to the Civil War, but there was little or no production until 1881. Small operators tried to develop ore bodies from time to time after that without success. Then, in 1917, a drilling program was carried out; but it did not indicate a copper content of interest. Finally, in the 1940s, the U. S. Geological Survey drilled the property and obtained indications of a mineralized area. At that time, Magma Copper and its principal owner, Newrnont Mining Corporation, drilled many deep holes through the gravels and conglomerates and in 1948 proved an ore reserve of 367 million tons of 0.785% copper sulfide ore. Underground exploration and development were started in early 1948, and in 1953 design and construction of the surface facilities commenced. By the end of 1955 plant construction was completed. The ore deposit of disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, molybdenite, silver, and gold is in quartz monzonite porphyry gangue. Mine production, which is entirely underground, is by full-gravity block-caving. Initially, ore mined at a rate of 36,000 tpd was hoisted through two identical shafts. From the 5,000 ton coarse ore bins located at the collar of each shaft, the ore was hauled by a shuttle service rail- road in 100-ton bottom-dump rail cars a distance of seven miles to the rail bin. Fragmentation from block-caving supplemented by underground grizzlies at the loading stations controlled the oversize material to give a feed size acceptable to the two 7 ft standard Syrnons crushers. During operation, however, it became evident that a large amount of secondary breaking in the grizzlies was necessary to produce a suitable feed for the standard crushers. The decision was then made to install primary gyratory crushers on the surface adjacent to the shaft site ore bins. Under each 5,000-ton coarse ore bin, an 8ft by 20 ft (2.44 m by 6. 1 m) apron feeder transfers the ore to a 13 ft 6 in. by 10 ft (4. 1 m by 3. 05 m) grizzly set at 6 in. (152 mm) and sloped at 45 degrees. About 65% of the ore passes the grizzly and thus bypasses the 42 in. by 65 in. The symposium on production for the year 1940 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It is probable that the foreign part of next year's symposium will be even shorter. This is due to rigid censorship in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even more true than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. 'It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not de-terminable frod data available to the author, please inserty; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In sucli cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved') and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. H. McD. Lorain says in regard to his son, Captain S. H. Lorain; "It might be of interest to you to know that, although but 23 years of age, my son is captain of Co. C 107th U. S. Engineers, Thirty-second Division. He landed in France about the middle of February, 1918, and was commissioned a captain on Sept. 5, 1918. He started for the front the latter part of June and was there continuously until the armi-stice was signed, on Nov. 11, being on the front lines in the Argonne at that time. He is, at present, in Coblenz, Germany, with the Army of Occupation. Although much of his work was clone under artillery and machine-blur fire, as well as airplane bombs and fire, he escaped without a scratch. Once, he was the only one of a group who escaped without a scratch from an exploding shell." Lieut. Bernard H. Lasky, on a post card received a short time ago, gave the following brief record of his military career. "I have been serving with the 316th Engineers in France and in Flanders and had the satisfaction of being in the last big drive in Belgium which sent the enemy beyond Avaenarde and did much to increase their gait on their way to Brussels. On Oct. 1, I received a commission as second lieutenant and was assigned to Co. C of the 316th Engineers."

A NOVEL practice in the bituminous coal industry is the accelerated method of burning coal to ash used in the laboratory of the Fidelity washery of the United Electric Coal Companies, Du Quoin, Ill. Development of this method has supplanted the tedious float-and-sink process for plant control at this plant. In normal operation the plant operators have available within thirty minutes the accurate ash percentage of the coal loaded in the railroad cars and can therefore make adjustments to maintain a practically uniform quality of washed coal, regardless of the variations in washery feed.
