The necessary funds have been provided for the award in 1915 of three prizes, respectively of $50, $30, and $20, for the best essays, or other papers, submitted in competition by Junior Members and Members of Affiliated Student Societies. The following rules for the competition are therefore established in accordance with the instructions of the Board of Directors May 22, 1914: (1) A competitor for the President's Prizes must be, at the time of submitting his essay, either a Junior Member or a Member of an Affiliated Student Society of this Institute.

The Institute should feel honored that one of its distinguished members, Auguste J. Rossi, has been awarded the Perkin Medal of the Society of Chemical Industry. The medal was presented at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society on Jan. 18, at the Chemists' Club. Mr. F. A. J. Fitzgerald, Past President of the American Electrochemical Society; described the work of Mr. Rossi, while the presentation address was delivered by William H. Nichols, Past President of the Society of Chemical Industry.

Footnotes to column heads and explanation of symbols are given on page 239. H.C.T. means the deep zone for High Cold Test crude oil. L.C.T. means the shallow zone for Low Cold Test crude oil. They occur in the same area. In the same area there are many shallow pits and some wells. In the column showing total oil production to the end of 1939 are included 355,997 bbl. from shallow pits before 1939. During the last year there was no production from shallow pita.

Plans for a multi-million dollar uranium mill in southeastern Utah were confirmed by Vanadium Corp. of America officials. Atomic Energy Commission has been dickering with two private firma for mill construction at Hite, Utah and Shiprock, N. Mex. Colorado Fuel & Iron has contracted to purchase all manufacturing business, plants and inventories of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., through a wholly owned subsidiary. CF&I currently the nation's ninth largest steel producer, will operate the new subsidiary under the Roebling name.

The first session of the 91st term of Congress became so completely snarled up in economics and politics that no one knows how things will go in 1970 including the White House. Everything from mineral depletion allowances to tax deferments kept the Republican President and the Democratic Congress from settling their differences. In the spring of 1935 the authors undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current carth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. An area near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was selected, where a diabase dike was known. For rapid reconnaissance the magnetic method offers several advantages ovcr the electrical. The resistivity method is useful in determining the position of underground water, a factor of consideration in regions where mining is contemplated. All factors considered, the coincidence between the positions of the dike as determined by the two methods is striking.

The thirty-second annual meeting of the Montana Society of Engineers was held at Great Falls, Mont., on Apr. 10-12. The first day was given to the reception of visitors and the second day to the inspection of points of engineering interest. On Saturday, at the business meeting, the following officers were elected: President, Samuel Barker, Jr.; first vice-president, Charles A. Lemmon; second vice-president, George T. McGee; secretary and librarian, Clinton H. Moore; treasurer, Harry H. Cochrane; trustee for three years, Theodore Simons.

The most important decline in drilling activities during the past three years was in the Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica fields and at Bitkow in Eastern Poland. A small drilling increase in some fields of the Jaslo and Drohobycz districts, notably Wankowa, Ropienka and Rypne, cannot compensate in new production for the decline in the large fields.

The presentation of the John Fritz Medal to Professor Henry M. Hone will take place in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies? Building, 29 West 39t,h Street, New York, at 8:30 o'clock on the evening, of May 10. The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and out- standing attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications-exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. 1) has been found very convenient for this purpose.
