The Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is plagued with abandoned prospectors' test pits and mine shafts, the result of exploration and operation of mines for over 100 years. The Fort Wilkins State Park in Keweenaw County alone has three open prospectors' pits within its boundaries, protected by wooden fences and maintained by the (Michigan State Conservation Department as a tourist attraction.

In this paper an attempt has been made to review the cost trends in producing copper by conventional milling, smelting and hydrometallurgical means during the last five years. The primary objectives of this cost analysis are to provide a base for future projections as well as to indicate which cost items are more volatile in their influence on overall cost of producing copper.

Longhole sublevel stopes excavate ore with which the production geologist has only remote contact; therefore, predicting grade and tonnage from such a stope can be a problem. However, the longholes themselves yield data that can be used to improve those predictions. Here, a radial distribution method of weighting sample data is discussed, which is useful in forecasting grade and tonnage from certain longhole sublevel stopes.

Petroleum is produced in Canada in the provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta and in the Northwest Territories. Continuous countercurrent decantation calculations have always been a headache to the cyanide man (and the chemical engineer) because of the simultaneous equations involved. These are tedious to solve, and there is considerable opportunity for mathematical error. This paper presents a shortcut method for making these calculations, which has been in successful use for twenty years by the author, and which is particularly valuable in selecting the best of several possible flowsheets, or evaluating the effect of various assumptions.

Direct Versus Indirect Control of the Economy FACED with placing the nation in a state of partial mobilization, it is expedient that it be done in such a way that the national economy and productive capacity are strengthened. The immediate adoption of direct controls such as Axed prices and wages, rationing, manpower controls, and allocations conceivably could destroy the basis of our free economy. Controls breed more of the same and since the present program is a long term project, it should be undertaken within our present business framework so far as possible or until total war makes it impossible.
