In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

Chip formation in rock under a line load and in front of a drag bit cutter is numerically investigated. Analysis is accomplished by a special purpose interactive graphics finite element code, SICRAP, written for the simulation of mixed mode crack propagation under 1inear elastic fracture mechanics assumptions. The first study provides some interesting qualitative results, and in the second study, correlation with experimental tests on chip formation by drag bit cutter in Berea sandstone is found to be very satisfactory. This indicates that elastic analysis, coupled with fracture mechanics, is capable of modeling rock cutting.

As we all know, the electric-furnace operation consumes practically 100 pct cold steel scrap. This is in contrast to the operation of the open-hearth furnace, in which 40 pct or more of the charge may be hot metal. The problem of quality of scrap for the electric furnace is really twofold, and in the interest of simplification may be described under two headings: (I) physical specifications, (2) chemical composition. Shipment of electric-furnace scrap to meet required physical specifications is a relatively easy task. The scrap dealer is accustomed to preparing material to certain sizes and shapes. His employees readily execute orders when they are given in terms of length, width and thickness of the material to be loaded.

The purpose of this writing is to make available additional data, not previously published, on the extraction of silica from certain iron ores of Wisconsin and Minnesota and to discuss a possible method of processing. Results of investigations on the extraction of silica from low grade iron ores have been previously presented and discussed in detail in AIME Transactions.1,2 All of the ores investigated are essentially nonmagnetic and consist mainly of hematite, goethite and quartz. Much of the quartz is microcrystalline, particularly in the taconites. The ore from the Cuyuna range contains in addition manganese oxides. Under the joint auspices of the Illuminating Engineering Society and the University of Pennsylvania there will be given about 20 lectures covering the general principles of illumination and the aspects of lighting practice. They will be held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21 to 28, 1916, inclusive. The subject of illumination of mines will be included in this series, which will be delivered by men selected on account of their qualifications to deal authoritatively with the several phases of the subject. In connection with the lectures there will be an exhibition of the latest developments in illuminating appliances, including lamps, accessories, photometers, together with novel applications of light. There will also be an inspection tour which will include visits to manufacturing establishments, laboratories, lighting companies and notable lighting installations. One of our members, in Colombia, has written the following interesting account of his experience in trying to remit his dues to the Institute. "Last year I was away at the end of the year and on my return I was unable to obtain a draft in Honda until April, I believe. To avoid delay this year I remitted cash, early in January, to a friend in Bogota who I imagined could sell or procure for me various small drafts to cover my annual subscriptions. After many weeks' delay, I was informed that he could not get them for me and was remitting the cash to Honda where they were obtainable. After another long delay, I was informed that no one in Honda would sell drafts or checks for small amounts. Eventually I found a friend who was willing to oblige me in the matter and at once forwarded the amount."

1. Any society of undergraduates at a technical school, comprising students in any branch of engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, geology, etc., may be recognized by the Board of Directors in its discretion as an Affiliated Student Society, and its name, together with the names of its President and its Secretary, may be published in the Bulletin or the Year Book of the Institute. The individual members of such a society will not be catalogued as individual members or associates of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as members or associates of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. F. McMillan Stanton was born in New York City on May 23, 1865, the son of an English father and of a mother whose family was linked with that of Peter Stuyvesant. Mr. Stanton took his degree from the School of Mines of Columbia University in 1887, worked for two years as an assayer and surveyor and then went into the mining field on his own account. After a few years, he was offered a position with the Atlantic Mining Co., and began the work which was to continue with marked success for twenty-three years. In 1910, Mr. Stanton retired and went to Europe for a rest. Upon his return in 1914, he was elected treasurer and director of the Mohawk Mining Co., the Wolverine Copper Mining Co. and the Michigan Copper Mining Co., to which group was later added the White Pine Extension, Copper Co., and continued to serve these companies until the time of his death, Sept. 12, 1916.

The Year Book of the Institute is mailed with this Bulletin. Its membership lists, both alphabetic and geographic, are corrected to Jan. 1, 1918, but its list of officers is revised inn accordance with the elections in February, 1918. The amendment to the Constitution, relating, to qualifications for membership, adopted at the same time, is also inserted in its proper place. We would call attention to the Honor Roll, heading the list of membership. This includes the names of those whom we know (in February, 1918) to be on active military duty, as well as those who are rendering emergency service to the Government in other branches. We are aware that the list is not complete, and shall be grateful for information as to any omissions or corrections. Because of the rapid movement of the military members, their addresses have been omitted from the alphabetic list. Mail addressed to such members, and sent to the office of the Institute, will be forwarded to the best of our information at the time.

High intensity wet magnetic separation methods have received much attention in the search for alternative and effective methods to treat weakly magnetic minerals. This paper examines the incorporation of such techniques in the beneficiation of a non-sliming specular Michigan Hematite. The dependence of separation efficiency and beneficiation of specular hematite on various parameters controlling the operation of such a device is investigated experimentally. Particular attention is focused on particle size limitations imposed in these separations. In light of these data, metallurgical balances are presented and an attempt made to rationalize the various models suggested in the literature.

In this investigation, a method to measure the basic characteristics of comminution has been developed. These characteristics are expressed by the three major comminution functions - crushing probability function, energy function, and breakage function. By testing three different minerals, quartz, calcite, and jasper, these three functions are determined. It is shown that the crushing qualities of a material can be valued by three constants which define the two first comminution functions. These two functions give the relation between particle size, probability of crushing, and the energy input.

(written discussion?).-On page 2680, under the heading Junction Box and Zone Box, the authors say, with reference to the zone-box principle of connections between primary couple, compensator couple, and copper leads, which method in its appli-cation to a single couple is shown in Fig. 34, that if this principle is adopted for a multiple installation, so as to save compensating leads; a selective switch may be (and the inference is that it must be) inserted between the zone box and the different couples, putting the switch at an inconvenient point, or putting up with some complicated interlacing of connections.. Wilson-Maeulen Co. has employed the zone-box method extensively for several years and in none of the many multiple installa-tions has either of those alternatives been resorted to. Instead there has been used a method of wiring with the switch at the indicator and involv-ing no more complications than the junction-box method shown III

If we assume that testing of the model started at time C, that time t2 was the instant at which the elastic limit of the material was passed at the points of the maximum stress, and that at time t3 the failure of the model was completed as shown in the typical photograph (Fig. 1), then actually the photograph shows the final results of what took place between time t2 and t3. By the principle of similitude all conclusions drawn from the behavior of the model were applicable and valid for actual mine roofs up to the time t, after time t, motions and friction came into play during the destruction of the model. The events between t2 and t3 and the photograph itself are not representative of the events expected in an actual mine roof unless corrections imposed by the principle of similitude are made.

In connection with the recent visit of the Special Mission of British Ministry of Munitions to the United States, the United Engineering Societies gave a dinner to the members of the. Mission on Tuesday evening, Nov. 13. This was the only public function on behalf of the visiting commissioners while they were in New York. During the remainder of their visit they were in daily conference with bankers, merchants' associations, labor federations, and other organizations. The result of these conferences will doubtless have an important influence on the manufacture of war supplies in the United States, since it will enable our business men and manufacturers to avoid a good many of the mistakes that unfortunately occurred in England at the beginning of the war. At present, fully 90 per cent. of the employees of British munition factories are omen, and the problem of employing women in the industries of the United States will doubtless soon be encountered with increasing frequency.

SHORTLY after Ambrose Swasey suggested the creation of the Engineering Foundation in 1914, the World War broke. upon the scene. Consequently all eyes were soon turned to national security problems. In 1916 the newly-organized Engineering Foundation and the four National Societies joined with the National Academy of Sciences in establishing the National Research Council. From then until 1923 the Engineering Foundation devoted the greater part of its resources to the support of the Research Council and the Council's division of engineering. Since 1923, how-ever, it has turned to the original intention for which it was created, of cooperating with the national societies in proj-ects affecting engineering at large, though it still retains a connection with the Research Council. Mere enumeration and tabulation of work undertaken can of course lend but a vague idea of actual accomplish-ments. The reports of the Foundation give information of its widespread activities.

At Kobe Steel Ltd., various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since beginning lime-fluxed pellet production. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets, developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. With this improvement, successful BF performance has been achieved. But, in order to achieve more successful BF performance, improvements of physical properties such as the shape factor, reposed angle, and the bulk density are desired. Now, crushed pellets have been developed for the improvement of those characters. The test operation with these new pellets in Kakogawa No. 2 BF was carried out with successful results. This report describes the development of crushed pellets and their use in BF.

FOR structural as well as economic reasons, sanded grout rather than neat cement grout should be used wherever possible. The chief drawback in using sanded grout mixtures, however, is the tendency of the sand to settle out, causing problems in pumping. Manufactured sands have not been used in sanded grout because it has been assumed that their irregular particle shape would add to the pumping difficulties. The Concrete Division of the Waterways Experiment Station in Jackson, Miss., has conducted a comprehensive investigation of grouts containing both natural and manufactured sands. In the study of manufactured sand grouts an investigation was made of physical characteristics, ease of pumping, and the effects of adding certain mineral fines. The amount of material passing 100 mesh ranged from zero to 25 pct. Results were compared with test results for natural sand grouts.
