Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the "official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the, Committee.

The rapid development of the Budafa-Puszta field during 1938 advanced Hungary a considerable distance along the road to self-sufficiency in domestic crude-oil supplies. Seven wells were completed in the field during the year, at depths averaging 4100 ft., and there have been no dry holes. Initial productions have ranged from 150 to about 400 bbl. per day. At the end of the year daily average production amounted to about 1400 bbl., which is equivalent to 33 per cent of Hungary's daily internal consumption. Production increased somewhat in the Government-controlled oil field at Bükkszek, also discovered in 1937, but nothing occurred to alter previous indications that this field would be capable of only relatively insignificant development. ANALYTICAL results have previously been presented for the diffusion-controlled solution of a second phase in a finite medium for planar, cylindrical, and spherical geometries.' These results were obtained by numerical methods using digital computer techniques and are applicable not only to the stage of the problem where the unstable phase shrinks to zero size, but also the subsequent stage where the concentration gradients in the matrix phase become negligible (essentially complete homogenization). An in-seam tester, which is a hydraulically activated single-pick instrument to measure and record pick cutting forces, was designed and fabricated to establish criteria necessary for the design and development of a water-jet-assisted rotary drum cutting system using moderate-pressure jets (3,000 to 10,000 psi). Data are presented for cutting trials in a simulated coal block and underground in the Pittsburgh coal seam for water-jet assist and dry cutting. Data analysis indicates that water-jet assist significantly reduces pick forces.

The Nominating Committee for Institute Officers in 1953, John R. Suman, chairman, completed its work at the Annual Meeting in February, and has made its report to the Board of Directors. The President-Elect in 1953 serves as President in 1954. The ticket follows: For President-Elect and Director, Leo F. Reinartz; for Vice-President and Director, A. B. Kinzel and Lloyd E. Elkins; for Director, Hjalmar W. Johnson, Philip Kraft, Gail Moulton, Edwin L. Oliver, Philip Wilson, and Elmer Isern. Mr. Reinartz is a vice-president of the Armco Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio. As required by the bylaws, brief biographical sketches of the nominees will be published in the July issues of the journals.

In a former paper read at the Washington meeting of the Institute, February, 1881,' I presented a general view of the geology and veins of Tombstone as then developed. Considerable additions have been made to our knowledge of the oredeposits since that date, nearly all the mines having been worked down to the general wster-level of the district. This water was a bar to further progress in depth and costly pumps were erected at the Grand Central mine and at the Contention. By the united action of these pumps the water was gradually lowered, not only in these two mines, but in all the important mines of the district. Pending a consolidation of interests, or an equitable distribution of the cost of unwatering, both pumping-plants were destroyed by fire, and the mines were closed

I WOULD like to call the attention of our Bessemer steel manufacturers to a few facts in regard to the action of the manganese in. the Spiegel with the oxide of iron in the blown iron. The oxygen is united with the iron as a magnetic oxide, as Gautier asserts, and this oxide is reduced to a protoxide by one-atom of the manganese uniting with one atom of the oxygen of the magnetic oxide of iron. SME-AIME's Planning Committee established Working Party No. 22 in September 1974. Its charge was to: "Determine and take necessary actions to have Mining Engineering included among the disciplines on the National Professional Engineering Examinations." The first national examinations in "Mining/Minerals Engineering" will be given during April 1979, in states that request questions from the National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE), Seneca, S.C. From a survey by NCEE, mining engineering is recognized as a specialty in professional engineering registration in 25 states. In addition, 19 states give examinations in mining engineering. At press time, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia have indicated they will use the April 1979 exam.

The mining industry has been a leader in the application of ultrasonic level monitoring systems, utilizing the "sonar-in-air" concept for the accurate inventorying of material not only as an end within itself, but going on to activate alarms, turn off feeders, operate tripper systems, and totalize the inventory in numerous bins as well as other more sophisticated applications. The virtues of ultrasonic level monitoring are no doubt appreciated by most users. However, to be of maximum service to the expanding mining industry, the manufacturer must be fair in pointing out ultrasonic's limitations as well as its virtues. The limitations can be surmounted with new technology and through a proper understanding of the principles of operation and application.

OCHRE is a semimineral composed by Nature of earth and a tincture of yellow caused by a fumosity of lead ore. By itself it is a material without any [38] metal, although when it is used in smelting it helps to melt the harsh and sour ores of metals. I do not know that it has any other use, except to painters. Bole is also a red viscous earth which has a very astringent and drying nature. It has no very apparent smell or taste, and I think that the cause of its redness lies in the fumosities of iron ore, for it is a companion to this and is found in its mines. THE discovery of SAP alloys (sintered aluminum powders) by lrmannl has stimulated investigations in other alloy systems.23 Not only do such alloys have good room-temperature properties, but they maintain high strength after prolonged service at elevated temperatures. In addition, they show high structural stability, including unusually high recrystallization temperatures. These characteristics are secured by dispersion hardening. Mankind has found lime and limestone a useful mineral commodity since the dawn of history. The ancient Egyptians knew how to make use of it as a building material, and it has been used in agriculture for centuries. More recently, limestone became a cheap ingredient in some chemical processes, in metallurgy and in the manufacture of alkalis. The consumption of lime and limestone has never diminished; in fact, the process of lime production remained the same until the recent introduction of the modern rotary or vertical kilns. However, the demands of industry and agriculture are changing the usage patterns of the commodity. The USBM now keeps statistics according to type- quicklime, hydrated lime and dead-burned dolomite -and according to market, whether open or captive.

The mineral garnet, while ordinarily considered a semiprecious gem stone or a second-grade industrial gem, has also proved itself in the field of industrial abrasives. Its use is well known as a sand-paper grain, and as a sandblasting sand its qualities are rapidly becoming recognized in more and more industries. Production of garnet as an abrasive is confined chiefly to two areas in the United States, North Creek, N. Y., where the Barton Mines Corp. operates, and Emerald Creek, Benewah County, Idaho, where the Garnet Mines, Inc., and the Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co. with mills at Fernwood, Idaho, operate. This paper is confined to a discussion of production and marketing of garnet sand by Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co.

An engineering procedure for designing the minimum separation between solution mined caverns in bedded salt deposit is described. The procedure is based on data obtained by in-situ and laboratory test methods. The formulae utilize the concept that salt rock under high pressure in a deep salt rock deposit would behave as a perfectly plastic substance, and that the active opening surrounding a typical cavern could be described by a circular ellipsoid. The paper describes the calculations required for the safe design of a solution mined salt cavern field.

A three day international mining convention was held At the city hall of Nelson, B. C., June 19-21. It was held under the auspices of the Nelson-Slocan and British Columbia Mining Men's Club, the Northwest Mining Association of Spokane, the Kootenay Mine Owners' Association, assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver, Chamber of Mines, the City of Nelson, the Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and the Nelson Board of Trade. The technical program was in charge of Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and Western Branch and Kootenay-Boundary Branch, The Canadian Mining Institute. The first day was given over to the judging of mining exhibits and manufacturer's displays; the organization of a branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, and the reception of visitors from Spokane. On Friday afternoon a joint session of the Canadian Mining Institute and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held.

(written discussion*).-The method adopted by Mr. Lennox is a very interesting test of the practical application of Mr. Gates' crushing-surface diagram to a greet variety of gold and copper ores. His method of dealing with the material below 200-mesh is also a distinct contribution to the subject, although, as he suggests, it seems likely that some microscopic measurement of this material may be advisable before the mesh reciprocals of its group particles can be dealt with as accurately as can those coarser than 200-mesh. In examining the general results shown in Table 3, it is somewhat puzzling to perceive why Calumet &, Hecla jig tails should show a crushing resistance 3 - times greater than that of the ore from the Ray Consolidated copper mine.
