Risk capital for mining ventures becomes harder to get each year as the costs for exploration, construction and money continue to skyrocket in today's inflationary economy. Because of this and because mining prospects must compete for the same dollar as many other needs of a diversified company, then the success or failure of any new proposal depends on how well its return on investment compares with all other capital requests. Mr. Kruger presents case histories showing what it costs to explore for new mines, how many of these prospects reward their promoters with success and how well some of the more famous mines have paid off.

THE investigation outlined in this paper was carried on at the plant of the Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE In the study of the effect of temperature, heats were made with the Sawbrook company's standard practice, using multiple slags, the only difference' being that the heats were tapped at two temperatures; one group between 2960° and 3040°F and the other group between 3200° and 3250°F. Slags were weighed throughout the heat at each slag change and after the heat was poured. Only the significant slag weights, those of the total slag and the finishing slag, have been reported.

IN Chemical Phenomena of Iron Iron Smelting, Mr. Bell gives the weight of materials required to fill furnaces of various sizes at the Clarence Works ; as this differs very much from the weight required for furnaces at Glendon, where anthracite and in agnetic and brown iron-ores are used, a comparison is interesting. Taking furnaces at Glendon of 4800 and 11,900 cubic feet capacity and comparing them with the Clarence furnaces of 6000 cubic feet and 11,500 cubic feet, we find that the 4800 cubic feet at Glendon and the 6000 cubic feet at Clarence required respectively

A simplified system of flotation testing has been developed recently at the Bureau of Mineral Research of Rutgers University. The technique involves the known principle of skin flotation and can be used with minute quantities of sample and reagents in a beaker. A vessel containing the conditioned sample with added water and flotation reagents is held inclined and rotated slowly. Water-repellent particles come in contact with air and float on the surface of the liquid, while wettable particles are submerged. The float is poured off and filtered whereas the nonfloat remains in the beaker. The filtrate may be returned to repeat the process.

When a new mine is in the planning stages, one of the most important decisions to be made is the selection of' face haulage equipment and the interrelated transportation system to the surface. Equally important is the method of transporting personnel supplies and repair parts from the surface to the working places. When Bell & Zoller management elected to open the new Zeigler mine in the No. 9 seam near Madisonville, Ky., last year, various transportation systems were considered. It was agreed early that a slope mine would be preferred to a shaft mine, and that belt conveyors would be more economical than a rail system.

In opening the meeting I wish to express my greatest pleasure at being able to greet this joint session of the Mining and Electrical Engineers. As engineering develops, we find that the border lines between the different branches of engineering become more and more indistinct; the several fields overlap so much that they are three or four layers deep in places. Ten years ago, upon coming home to New York, we had money in the bank, a portfolio of stocks, a rent- controlled apartment overlooking the Hudson and we didn't own an automobile. This was bliss! The just reward of industry and careful management of the fruits of our labor in the mines overseas. Although we kept up a delaying action, the family was pushing hard for a house in the suburbs. We were able to find something wrong with every house that came up but, finally, in a weak moment made the unlikely compromise of putting ten dollars down on a piece of property in Westchester County.

The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. The largest variety of asphalt and related bitumen deposits in this country is found in Utah. Utah is one of the few places in the world where the hydrocarbon minerals, gilsonite or uintaite, wurtzilite (trade name elaterite) and ozokerite are produced. These bitumens occur in an area embracing nearly 10.000 square miles in eastern Utah near the Colorado line. This area is largely in the western part of the Uintah basin. The bitumens are in the Tertiary horizon in the various divisions of the Eocene series. Cilsonite is an asphaltite derived from petroleum, wurtzilite is an asphaltic pyrobitumen derived from petroleum, and ozokerite is a native mineral wax resulting from the metamorphosis of paraffinaceous petroleum.

THE object of this study was to compare variations in slag volumes with tap changes while maintaining all other factors constant. This meant: 1. Same type of heat (Spec. SAE 1030). 2. Same charging material (3500 lb foundry, 4000 lb bought scrap). 3. Same amount of sand by weight to fix slag line. 4. Same method of melting with the exception of tap changes. 5. Same method of weighing slag after each test. The equipment of the Dodge Steel Co. consists of a 132-ton Heroult furnace lined with silica brick, using three 8-in. electrodes and a 2000-kva transformer, with four tap changes. In the melting practice we use a Fischer Carbanalyzer and a Herty viscosimeter and try to standardize all heats by making necessary carbon and slag adjustment before boil to keep all heats as uniform as possible.

IN 1955, before planning an accelerated stripping program, Chino Mines Div. began an engineering study to improve data for estimating truck haulage costs for any future haulage layout. The study aimed to develop: 1) significant unit costs, 2) a method of estimating travel time from which truck needs and future stripping rate could be determined, and 3) yardsticks of performance to measure haulage efficiencies. It was suggested that to provide significant unit costs, expense accounts should offer management two types of cost control information-unit cost yardsticks with which monthly unit costs could be compared and unit costs for estimating future expenses for any haulage layout.

The data about production in this county are exceedingly meager, and there are few reliable data about shipments. It is probable that consid¬erable amounts of coal from here moved north to Erie by both the Beaver and Erie. Canal and the Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad, and if so, they are included with Mercer County. The data in the early state reports are very inaccurate and are always much too low. Much of this coal was used in local furnaces and iron plants and not handled by railroads. There was some production in this county on the line of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, of which no record can be found. The estimated production is based on the number of mines reported as operating in the county at various dates and their probable output, as suggested occasionally in county histories. It is believed that these figures are below, rather than above, the actual figures, which can now never be obtained.

The individual members of such a society will not be catalogued as individual members or associates of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as members or associates of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. Membership in an Affiliated Student Society, certified by the official representative thereof, and accompanied with suitable testimony as to character and qualifications, will have special, weight with the Membership Committee of the Institute, in its consideration of the proposal of a candidate for membership or for Junior membership.
