THE DEVELOPMENT of the Phelps Dodge copper and railroad interests began in one era of the company's history and continued unbroken into the next. Yet the two eras themselves were strikingly dissimilar and represented marked differences in the company's activities, corporate structure, and personnel. From its organization in 1834 almost to the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, the partnership known as Phelps Dodge was directed, managed, and controlled by the family dynasty established by Anson Greene Phelps. The last two directing partners of this three-generation-old regime assumed control of the company's affairs in 1879 when the economic revolution that followed the Civil War was well under way.' Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Past President, Honorary Member, and Secretary Emeritus, died suddenly of heart failure at his home, 123 Henry St., Brooklyn, N. Y., on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1918. -He is survived by his' wife and daughter. He was one of the founders of the Institute and its second President, his genius was the Institute's guiding spirit for 47 years. Dr. Raymond was one of the most versatile men of the day; an able mining engineer; brilliant professional writer; an editor of the first rank and an acknowledged authority on matters of literary style; a creator in the fields of fiction, children's stories, poetry and music; for more than 50 years the superintendent of Plymouth Church Sunday School. He will be revered by thousands as a loyal friend, generous giver, and admired colleague. His passing marks an epoch in mining and metallurgical literature. A memorial service will he held in the Auditorium of the-Institute Headquarters on Monday, Feb. 17, 1919, at 4.30 P.M.

A prospecting project for deep-seated sulphide ore bodies will be expensive and means a considerable economic risk. The high costs depend on the demand for extensive drilling. It is therefore important to find effective methods to estimate the outcome of different prospecting strategies. The results from a preliminary study of the possibility of using mathematical methods for this purpose are presented. We have found that mathematical methods, especially simulation technique, might be an important tool in such exploration work. A mathematical model of an ore field and of a drilling procedure has been constructed. A set of parameters describes the geometry, the size distribution and the intensity of ore bodies. Another set describes the geometry and the intensity of drill holes. Some preliminary results are given of Monte-Carlo simulations and probability calculations.

Direct identification in situ of x and a phase precipitates in stainless steel is possible with the electron probe microanalyzer. Although particles in the 1 p size range are too small to yield absolute percent composition, the relative % Crfi Mo ratio can be used to distinguish the two phases with better than 95 pct confidence. Wet chemical analysis of extracted residues gives Cr/Mo ratios in good agreement with electron probe results extrapolated to the 4 to 5 p size range. Last time there was a Take Five in these pages, it dealt largely with the matters considered by your Board of Directors at the meeting on October 20, 1970, in St. Louis, Mo. It was impossible to cover all the points worthy of discussion in the space available. So, at the end of the Take Five in the December issue of [i=], I promised to continue in the next installment. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep that promise. On December 2 your humble servant joined the ranks of those who have suffered a coronary occlusion. While I was away from the office, the very excellent SME staff team that we have built up over the years kept things going without bothering the "old man" unnecessarily. Assistant Executive Secretary, John V. Beall, Mrs. Lillian E. Donaldson, Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ruth Orologio, Administrative Assistant, and Mrs. Alice Ruiz exceeded even their usual dedicated efforts. As a result, the SME came up to the Centennial-Annual Meeting in great shape.

Although the similarity between puzzolana, or trass, and blastfurnace slag, as seen by comparison of the analyses, is a well-known fact, blast-furnace slag has not been used commercially as a substitute for those cementing materials. The reason, the writer apprehends, lies in the fact that unless such slag is disintegrated or subdivided by rolls, the process must either be too costly, or the material is not in a fit and proper condition for the purpose. In order to produce a reliable slag cement, the slag must be ground together with the lime into an impalpable powder. The subdivided slag must, therefore, be perfectly dry, and, at the same time, friable. The stronger the hydraulic properties of the lime, the more reliable the slag cement will be, and practice has proved, that the slag from a gray-iron furnace gives the best results. The slag cement which has given the results shown in the annexed table, under pressure tests, was composed of six parts of slag, from a blast-furnace producing No. 3 foundry iron, and one part of lime, of medium hydraulic properties. The above-described class of cement bears storing as long as most Portland cements, and the cheapness of its production is self-evident.

The following list of corrections has been compiled from the thirty-five volumes, with some additions: VOLUME I. Page 160. The first two sentences of the second paragraph should read as follows : " For No. II we find that 2.33 percent. A1,08 take 4.07 per cent. 8109, leaving 3.48 per cent. 8102 free, which requires 3.25 per cent. CaO." Page 160, line 14, 3.79 should be 3.25; and in the 15th and 18th lines, 48.44 should be 46.98. VOLUME VI. Page 59. The discharges of the miners' inch per second, given as .2624 and .2499 cubic feet, should be .02624 and .02499, respectively. IN these days the headlines and spotlight have been focused largely upon the new processes developed and new plants erected to meet the multiplied demands for mineral products required for prosecution of the war. By comparison, the less spectacular achievements of the miner, who is meeting the demand for raw material without which these processes and plants would be useless, have received little attention. Attendance at the mining meetings here reported was small, averaging about 35 to 40, but interest was as keen as ever, and evidenced to your reporter that the miner is no less on the job than is the metallurgist. It is evident that the mine operators are not neglecting any improved methods and practices in their struggle to produce more in the face of diminishing labor supply.

TUESDAY afternoon the annual meeting was devoted to a general session, in the auditorium, on production control. George Otis Smith presided and in opening the meeting recalled that the session in 1920 on the stabilization of the coal industry was the first time this subject had been discussed by Institute members in a general session and then introduced Carl Snyder, of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who spoke on "Long-time Growth and the Factors In Its Variations." He spoke without notes and a full presentation of his views must be deferred until the stenographer's report is available. He said that of the total production some 80 to 90 per cent represents goods for consumption and the other 20 to 10 per cent for construction. He discussed various indices of production, concluding that bank clearings are the best, and showed by charts that when they are plotted, allowing for various disturbing factors, they are seen to increase quite regularly at the rate of about 4 per cent per year. The production curve rises at only 3y2 per cent per year, because agricultural production does not in- crease as fast as manufacturing postal revenues in- crease at the rate of 5 per cent per year while the use of electricity increases twice as fast.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) ATTEMPTS were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting- the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No.1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles.

BeRyllium, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury, have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.' The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. Twinning has often been observed in zinc and cadmium. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.-I think my affections are still rather with the radiation pyrometer than the optical pyrometer, for practical use, and I wish that Prof. Burgess would use the two together, under the same conditions, using the optical as his standard, if he prefers. Then, assuming the optical emissivity which he feels is correct for the optical pyrometer, he could calculate the thermal emissivity for use with .the radiation pyrometer. If we could thus get reliable values for the thermal emissivity, we could then use the radiation pyrometer, and would avoid the use of the standard lamp, which has to be frequently calibrated for use in the optical pyrometer. It is very advisable to distinguish carefully between the terms optical emissivity and thermal emissivity. The extraction ratio approach to pillar design in flat seams is based on a mathematically exact analysis that is a reasonable physical approximation to room-and-pillar layouts in many instances. The essentials of the approach are reviewed and then mathematically approximate formulas for pillar design in inclined seams of arbitrary dip are proposed. Detailed numerical analysis of stress about a typical 5 entry, 4 pillar panel at dips of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees at low and high extraction ratios show that the proposed inclined seam extraction ratio formulas for pillar normal and shear stresses, although conservative, have an accuracy quite adequate for engineering purposes. Appropriate pillar safety factors for compressive and shear failure and a safety criterion for overturning are specified.

The Bemco mine area is within the Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock terrain of the New Jersey Highlands province. Rocks In the area include a pyroxene granite, a hornblende granite, a quartz-oligoclase gneiss and a pegmatite and its host rock, a lens of amphibolite which becomes a sulfide-rich pyroxenite near the ore zone. The ore-bearing zone occurs along the hanging wall and foot-wall contact of the pegmatite which was emplaced discordantly into the amphibolite-pyroxenite.

This time over a Puerto Rican copper development planned by American Metal Climax, Inc., and the Kennecott Copper Corp. Bureaucratic Dichotomy Creates Confusion and Conflict In the Copper Industry Ian MacGregor, chairman and chief executive officer of Amax, said Justice in a recent communique questioned the propriety of the proposal of a joint copper venture in Puerto Rico. At the same approximate time, Dr. Hendrik S. Houthakker, chairman of the President's Commission on Copper, was urging copper producers to expand production to help hold down prices by making more copper available to all consumers. This, Mr. MacGregor said, is creating confusion and conflict, since the Administration from one source is chastising the industry for doing what another branch requests.

The adoption of a plan of safeguarding American industry against extreme revolutionary industrial propaganda is the keynote of a report just issued by ex-Governor Robert P. Bass, of New Hampshire, covering the period of his service as. Director of the Marine and Dock Industrial Relations Division of the United States Shipping Board. He thinks that the only hope of America's resisting the tide of industrial unrest that is sweeping over the civilized world is in the development and early application of a constructive industrial program, in which program publicity and education carrried on by the Government will hold a leading place. He says: The Government should systematically inform both employers and employees in regard to many matters of the utmost interest and importance of each. It should acquaint labor with the Government's activities and service to labor in the past and should create in labor an appreciation of its joint interest with capital and with the Government in the problems of production. Satisfactory assurances should be given that labor will have a substantial voice in determining the distribution between capital and labor of the profits of production. Labor should be promised its reasonable share of any increase in production. There should be a joint determination of wages, hours, and conditions of work. Based on the foregoing principles, great emphasis should be placed on labor's interest and responsibility in the processes f production.

The object of this paper is to offer a few suggestions for improving the mining and mineral statistics presented by the governments of various nations on both sides of the Atlantic. At the present time one may fairly complain of' two evils—lack of uniformity in some cases and want of completeness in others. The consequence is that the statistics are either less plain than they might be, or are useless for comparisons, or fail to present a faithful picture of the state of the mining industries of a country.
