CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x1/2 in. thick.

Efforts were made to determine the amount of increase in the drying rate which could be obtained through acoustic treatment of ultra fine coal under various conditions, and to test the feasibility of using a rotary kiln and multitiered vibrating screens as a means for continuous drying of coal fines. Introduction of acoustic energy during the rotary kiln experiments increased the drying rates from 10-40%, depending upon the experimental condition. The use of a drying assembly consisting of multitiered vibrating screens produced better results than the rotary kiln and has definite possibilities of providing an effective means of drying coal fines in relatively large quantities.

The evaluation and selection of coals for producing metallurgical coke is indeed a complex process simply because coal is a complex and variable substance which is sensitive to how it is treated from the time it is mined until it is transformed into coke. A review of some of the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice should be of interest. Parameters used to select coking coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shots, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer simulation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. Methods of utilizing flocculents as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for makeup and delivery of flocculents to the application points are in use throughout the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author's opinion, are particularly important to the successful makeup and we of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available makeup and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

MANY studies of comminution have been made to ascertain the size distribution of the product and to evaluate the work of comminution in the light of the size distributions of the feed and product. Up to now, these studies have been essentially statistical in character, that is, a certain lot of feed was subjected to comminution in some specified way, and the aggregate product was fractionated into sizes, thereby losing all knowledge of individual relationship of feed to product pieces. Radioactive tracers offer a means to do something in this respect which could not be done before, namely, to follow the rupturing of some particular piece in its normal environment of other pieces. That is, it permits going beyond the usual statistical limitations of size distribution studies to what may be termed a personalized or individualized study. The purpose of this paper is to present some preliminary experiments conducted with this tool.

UNITED States Steel Co.'s Tennessee Coal & Iron Div. Wenonah mines present definite materials handling problems arising from the natural features of the operation. Trackless equipment went a long way toward supplying the answers-but at the same time gave birth to several new posers. Machines-trackless or otherwise-require maintenance and Wenonah's experience may do much to add to the body of information already available on this type of equipment. Let's look at the mines themselves. Ore is of sedimentary origin, extending over an area of several square miles. A thickness from 8 to 14 ft is mined. Bed dip varies from the horizontal to 20 pct in local rolls. Practice is to mine across the dip at 14 pct or less. A parting forms a smooth footwall in some of the mines while in others the footwall must be blasted smooth. Ore weighs 215 lb per cu ft in place and is extremely abrasive.

Snelus, in 1894, before the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain* so fully and ably described the Walrand-Leghisel process that there remains very little to add beyond recording some changes in practice, made since that date, and observed by the writer last summer, at several continental works, and the further fact that the process has now been for some time in successful operation in this country. Briefiy stated, the Walrand-LegBnisel process is an addition to the Bessemer operation, with the object of obtaining quiet and more fluid steel, and consequently sound castings and ingots. The sulphation roast-leach process for complex sulphides results in phase changes due to roasting and leaching. The phases in the calcine, and in the neutral and hot acid leach residues were identified and their degree of liberation determined in order to design and Interpret separation tests on the residues. The hot acid leach residue was composed of hematite, silica, and lead sulphate with some associated silver. Magnetic separation was selected as the process for producing a lead concentrate, as the non-magnetic product. Separation was limited by -1 pm hematite reporting to the product, and hematite/lead sulphate agglomerates reporting to the magnetics.

Western Mining Corp. has announced plans to expand its mining operations at Kambalda, and to build a nickel refinery at Kwinana, near Perth, Western Australia. The refinery will use the ammonia-leach hydrogen reduction processes of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., and it is expected that by 1970, when the expansion is scheduled for completion, Western will be the world's fourth largest nickel producer. Although estimates have not been finalized, the total cost is expected to be about $55 million. The mine and mill facilities at Kambalda, which began production in June 1967, are now producing at the rate of 11 million lb of contained nickel per year. The company estimates the sulfide ore reserves at Kambalda and St. Ives at 10.4 million tons averaging an usually high grade of 3.8% nickel, or about 790 million lb of contained nickel. In addition, silicate and oxidized ores have been located in both areas.
