LOCATION AND HISTORY THE San Manuel property is in townships 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and Salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern Pinal County, and is about 3;2 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River and one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona. The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The Old Hat district was prospected prior to the Civil War, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the St. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage or grade. It is estimated that not more than 5o tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the San Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried on drilling from November 1943 to February 1945. Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June I944 and an option agreement was made with the owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp., and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944. San Manuel Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. John Griffen (Consulting Engineer, Pittsburgh)— This paper presents much data offering tentative answers to many technical questions that have been raised by the employment of dense-medium processes and, particularly. by use of the drum-type vessel. It is to be hoped that the Bureau of Mines will publish complete detailed data for the 50 or more tests so that it may be studied and analyzed by everyone interested. Such study will take considerable time and effort. The writer is therefore obliged to confine his discussion to a few points he has noted as being open to question. The data in Table VI which shows the recovery efficiency for the 1 to ½-in. fraction as 100 pct raised a question concerning the accuracy of these calculated figures; washability data on the washed coal and refuse show that such a figure is impossible. When the ash content of the misplaced material in the washed coal is higher than that of the misplaced material in the refuse, recovery efficiency must be less than 100 pct. A etudy of the data In Tables 111, IV, V, and VI suggest that this error probably arose from slight errors in calculating the data in Table V and more probably from the small scale used in plotting the washability curves from the Table V data. Using the size consist data and the weight and ash percentages of individual gravity fractions of each size as given in Tables 111 and IV and the reported recovery of 80 pct of washed coal, a revised Table V was calculated, carrying weight and ash percentages to hundredths of a percent instead of rounding off at tenths. This washability data for each size of Belling-ham reconstituted feed was then plotted on large scale washability curves. From this data the new Table XIV was prepared, which agrees very closely with data shown in Table VI except for two important values, theoretical yields and recovery efficiencies. As will be noted the recovery efficiencies in Table XIV are significantly lower than those given in Table VI. A study was then made of the data showing distribution of the specific gravity fractions to washed coal and refuse. This study indicated that when this distribution was based on the fractions as tested at 0.1-sp gr intervals the number of points obtained were insufficient to establish the distribution curves with reasonable precision, which in turn would affect the accuracy of the values for the specific gravity of separation and the error areas. The data in Tables III and IV of the paper and curves prepared therefrom make it possible for the specific gravity fractions to be subdivided further. This was done using 0.05-sp gr fractions and the distribution data so obtained is given in Table XIV, with resulting values for the specific gravity of separation and the error areas. Introduction The use of frequency of vibration measurements to determine tension has long been accepted by industries that use electrical or stranded cables of wire ropes in their operations. In contemplating how to determine the tension in chords of a roof truss, it seems almost inevitable that a similar approach should be investigated even though there are some important dissimilarities in physical behavior between a chord of a rod-type Birmingham truss and a stretched wire rope. While the dominant feature of both types of behavior is the existence of tension, the bending resistance of the vibrating truss chord cannot be ignored. And it is common to have attached to the chord, pieces of hardware (turnbuckles, extension sleeves, wedge boxes) that represent concentrations of mass not usually found in a vibrating wire rope. Analytical solutions to the problem of vibrating wires or beams can be found in the literature on vibrations (Timoshensko, 1955; Den Hartog, 1956). But in every case, at least one of the ingredients of the vibrating truss chord is missing. The presence of axial tension, or bending resistance, of concentrated masses and of end conditions peculiar to truss chords is a combination that appears not to have been dealt with before, although the techniques for dealing with it are commonly known. The purpose of this note is to report the results of a project to measure and calibrate such frequencies. The work was conducted by the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines. Field observations Tests were conducted on 24 different truss installations. The first 18 trusses were installed in shale roofs above Kentucky No. 9 seam and Illinois No. 6 seam. The remaining six were placed against the competent sandstone over the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in West Virginia. Chord tension was determined by two electrical resistance strain gages, in series, applied diametrically opposite to one another on the rod before tensioning. Due to the combined effects of inexact gage placement, rod bending and residual torsion in the chord due to tightening, errors in tension as high as 1780 N (400 lb) were reasonably possible. Due to faulty soldering or damage, three of the first 18 trusses and one of the final six were rendered completely unreliable. In addition to strain, the first natural frequency of vibration was observed to the nearest 0.1 Hz. Dimensions recorded included the span between contact points at the bearing blocks (Fig. 1) and the locations and amount of excess rod and rod gap at the wedge box and turnbuckle, respectively.

SINCE boyhood I have had a keen interest in mining engineering. To see the prospector with his pack outfit and his pan, followed by the assayer and the trained engineer, has always had -something of the lure of romance for me. It is appropriate that the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers should hold a general meeting in California, since this State has long been a home of mining engineering. Here, after the early open methods of mining, it has been necessary for the universities to train men in geology and mining, so that the earth could be penetrated and the rich ledges opened. In the eighty years in which the mines of California have been offering experience to the miners of the world, we have seen mining engineering evolve from a comparatively simple art, covered largely by rule of thumb, into a complex group of specialties, each utilizing the very latest discoveries in the various fields of physical sciences. Mining, too, has become a great business requiring large financial support and the most careful handling. Those mining engineers who have applied new processes in special fields have thus been able to give a wide-flung range to their activities in all parts of the world. The hand of nature in distributing minerals over the surface of the earth has compelled the mining engineer to become a modern pioneer, facing the heat of the tropics as well as the frozen regions of the north. There has been a marked cosmopolitan aspect to mining engineering, since the engineer had to go wherever the prospector discovered favorable leads. This has meant dealing with the harshest of conditions, the handling of labor of all sorts, the control of sanitary conditions, and relations to all forms of transportation. Naturally this has called on some of the very best minds in all countries to unlock the stores of hidden wealth. To make them available for civilization has been the job of the mining engineer.

The discovery of two new fields—the Reed City area of Osceola County and the Headquarters field, of Roscommon County —and the important development in Winterfield township, Clare County, again demonstrate the fact that it is the unknown and unexpected that enter very definitely into the oil-producing history of Michigan. This is particularly true in the area of thick glacial drift in the north central part of the state, where the new prolific fields have been discovered this year. This shifts the interest from the southwestern part of the lower peninsula, where a number of pools were rapidly developed during 1939 and 1940, back into the Central Basin area. As a result of strict proration in the new areas, the production for the state of Michigan for the year has not been as great as in 1940 or 1939. In 1941 the total production was 16,300,000 bbl., in 1940 it was 19,551,000 bbl., and in 1939, which was the peak year, it was 23,300,000 bbl. However, the discovery of the new fields this year nearly doubles the estimated reserves for Michigan reported at the end of 1940 In 1941 about 12,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the older fields, in which the individual well productions were so small that proration was not an important factor. The total production for the state from the discovery of oil in 1925 through 1941 now stands at 161,205,000 barrels. ActIVe Oil Fields Reed City Field.—In the Reed City field, Lincoln township, Osceola County, only small oil wells were completed during 1939 and 1940. The discovery of much larger production in wells drilled somewhat deeper, by The Pure Oil Co. and the Weber Oil Co., in the early part of 1941, led to the rapid development in this area. Some wells have had initial productions as high as 10,000 bbl. By the end of the year III producing wells were completed, with an average depth of 3600 ft., from the Detroit River formation of Devonian age. The entire development of the field to the end of 1941 was on 20-acre spacing. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which lies along the line between Clare and Roscommon Counties, was one of the most important discoveries of 1941 and will be the scene of vigorous development during 1942. Production so far has been from the Traverse lime at about 3400 it., and development has indicated that this is probably one of the most productive Traverse pools yet discovered. One well had been given a potential of 10,000 bbl. per day. Dry holes well located in relation to big producers indicate that it is a typical Traverse development. Winterfield Field.-This field, in Winter-field township, Clare County, was discovered late in 1940. By December 1941, 14 Dundee and 5 Traverse producers had been completed. The Dundee lime is found at a depth of 3750 it. and the Traverse lime at 3070 it. Producing conditions in the Dundee seem to be erratic because of varying porosity in the dolomit-ized limestone. Kawkawlin Field.—The Kawkawlin field, which was discovered by the Gulf Refining Co. in 1938, is in Monitor and Kawkawlin townships, Bay County. Small production

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows: The Robert W. Hunt Medal, The Hadfield Prize, The J. E. Johnson Jr., Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the President's Prize to junior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to. a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the. award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." SIR ROBERT HADFIELD PRIZE Sir Robert Hadfield has offered an Institute prize of $1000 for researches with regard to the different forms of combination of carbon in iron and steel. Until within a few weeks no paper has been submitted which could compete for this prize. If the paper in hand should not meet the requirements, the donor has suggested that the prize be transferred and offered for: (a) the determination of the hardness in metals in connection. with super-hardness, (b) in consideration of questions of fuel economy, (c) in consideration of questions of industrial development and labor. J. E. JOHNSON, JR. AWARD This award is made from the income of a fund of $3000 donated by Mrs. Margaret Hilles Johnson in memory of her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., who was a prominent engineer, author of two valuable volumes on iron blast-furnace construction and practise, vice-chairman of the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee, and a frequent contributor of papers to the Institute's TRANSACTIONS.

In the course of some experiments more than five years ago, made for a totally different purpose than the investigation of the oil used, I placed a small quantity of a transparent yellow lubricating oil in a bomb-like vessel and heated it to a relatively high temperature. At the end of the experiment I removed the oil from the vessel and was amazed to find that instead of bearing any resemblance to the oil which I had put in, it now had the appearance of ordinary crude oil. The green color by reflected light and the rich red-brown by transmitted light were so unmistakable as to at once lead to further investigation. I subjected the material to fractional distillation, and the surprise which I experienced at the appearance of the oil, changed to amazement when I found that it yielded, on distillation, 15 per cent. of gasoline and 30 per cent. of burning oil, and that its constitution resembled crude oil quite as much as did its appearance. Furthermore, the gasoline and kerosene distillates which it yielded were of a clear water-white color, entirely without treatment with acid or alkali, and were entirely free from the odor familiar in "cracked" petroleum distillates. The result of this experiment was quite too remarkable to be credited without further confirmation, and I at once filled the vessel with some of the same oil that I had used before, and again heated to about the same temperature that I had previously used, and for the same period of time. Upon opening the vessel and removing the contents I found, not the material resembling crude oil that I had obtained before, but apparently only the same oil that I had put in, somewhat darkened in color, but nevertheless far different in appearance from the material obtained in the previous experiment. Evidently some condition existed in the first experiment that had not existed in the second test, and here began a series of tests in which I sought by the change of one variable after another to arrive at the identical conditions which must have existed in the first experiment. The symposium on production for the year 1944 includes more foreign papers than any one of the past three years, because of a partial relaxation of the censorship in many Western Hemisphere countries. The committee was not successful, however, in securing papers from Europe and the Near and Far East at this time, with the exception of Saudi Arabia and Bahrein. Where possible, these papers include summaries upon production for the missing war years, so that we shall have no permanent gap in the records. At the close of the war, we hope again to publish the usual more complete form of report for all important oil-producing countries. EXCERPTS FROM CIRCULAR TO AUTHORS In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each place in the table may represent one of three possibilities; either the proper entry is determinable and can be supplied by the author, or an approximate figure can be supplied which is the author's best guess and should be entered followed by an x, or it does not apply to the particular field and the space is left blank. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. . Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone. The net thickness of the producing formation should be the thickness of the producing zone, less the estimated amount to cover the portions of the zone that do not yield oil, such as dense shales, etc. It is recognized that for some fields the authors can only make rough guesses; in such cases, they should enter their best estimate followed by an x. BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces' has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. A new cementing technique has been developed which is particularly applicable to permanent-type well completion operations. The technique makes use of the accelerating effect of calcium chloride on setting time and strength development of cement cake deposited in squeeze cementing. An unique feature is that the accelerator is applied after the unaccelera-ted cement slurry has been squeezed and the excess has been reversed from the well. Laboratory data on the accelerating effect of calcium chloride applied to the fi1ter cakes of three low-water-loss cementing compositions demorzstrate that the procedure results in relatively rapid development of strength and impermeability of the cement cake. Simulated squeeze-ceinenting tests made in the laboratory likewise corroborated the practicality of the procedure. The laboratory tests showed that a newly developed oil-emulsion cemerzting composition is more susceptible to acceleration of set than are modified cements containing high percentages of bentonite. The acceleration procedure has been used successfully in field operations. INTRODUCTION Nature of Problem In squeeze-cementing operations, a substantial amount of time is consumed in waiting on the cement to develop strength after it has been squeezed into the well. Frequently, an interval of 18 to 24 hours or longer is required for the development of strength sufficient to prevent failure of the cement during subsequent operations in the well. Reduction of this waiting-on-cement time offers appreciable savings both in time and in money. A particular type of squeeze-cementing operation to which an increasing amount of attention has been given is encountered in permanent-type well completion operations wherein perforations are to be squeezed off1. In this procedure, it is customary to pump the cement slurry down the tubing and out into the perforated section through a retractable extension pipe. Squeeze pressure is then applied, which forces the cement slurry into the perforations and causes the build up of a compact filter cake of cement within the perforations. The excess slurry remaining in the hole is then removed by reverse circulation. The extension pipe is then retracted, and, if a new interval is to be perforated, a perforating gun is run through the tubing. The newly perforated interval may then be tested by swabbing. In such operations, it has been customary to allow approximately 20 hours or so for hardening of the cement squeezed into the perforations. This time interval is usually measured from the time that the cement is reversed out of the hole to the time that subsequent swabbing is started. If the cement has not developed strength at the commencement of swabbing, the pressure differential caused by swabbing results in failure of the squeeze job. At the time that the work described in this report was initiated, particular consideration was given to the reduction of waiting-on-cement time in squeeze cementing by the permanent-type completion technique. Consequently, much of the experimental work was directed to this specific objective, though the process which was developed for acceleration of strength development has possible application in other than permanent-type completion operations. Brief laboratory investigations are described which attempt to determine optimum .sand concentrations in gel-sand and oil-sand1 well-treatments. The investigations apply to the case where sand acts as a propping agent in formation fractures. Both analytically and experimentally it is demonstrated that optimum sand concentrations can be defined. It is difficult to translate laboratory results to field treatments, however, since the relative distribution of sand and fluid in fractures may not be the same as injected. This is because fluid may penetrate the furtherest narrow portions of fractures, which would not pass sand. Optimum concentration of a monolayer of Ottawa sand in fractures of 0.025-in. width at the usual range of pressures encountered in treatments appears to be about 95 to 2 lb/gal. of gel. An investigation of abrasion of rock-walls by sand in treatments, described in the Appendix, shows that such abrasion is not probable in significant amounts. INTRODUCTION Experience in the Spraberry formation of West Texas, as well as in other formations, has shown that. sand is a necessary and vital part of gel-sand and oil-sand treatments. Many observers of treatments have also concluded that there seems to be an optimum range of sand concentration for these injections. Brief laboratory investigations were made at Battelle Memorial Institute to study flow in fractures with different sand concen- trations. To investigate the existence and range of optimum concentrations in the laboratory, however, necessitates knowledge of the mechanism by which the sand aids in increasing subsequent production. The action of sand in fractures is usually thought to be either that of a propping agent, thus providing a greater effective formation permeability; that of an abrasive in eroding fill material in fractures; or that of an abrasive eroding rock-wall irregularities along fracture surfaces. Investigations described in the Appendix show that sand does not appear to erode rock-wall materials appreciably. In a subsequent paper it is reasoned, at least for the Spraberry formation of West Texas, that the primary action of sand is not in removing fill materials in fractures. In this formation, and probably others, too, the main effect of sand appears to be that of a propping agent. Both analytical and experimental investigations were made for the case of a monolayer of sand acting as a propper, in which sand concentrations were determined that would, after treatment, permit flow of the maximum quantities of oil from the formation into a well. If too few sand grains are injected into fractures in which the bottom hole pressure has decreased appreciably below the original formation pressure, the confining pressure in the formation may become relatively large, thus compress the rock-walls around the sand grains, essentially close fractures, and so decrease the subsequent flow of oil. Similarly, if too much sand is used, the flow of oil will he impeded by the volume of sand present. THEORY Although an analytical approach to determining optimum sand concentrations involves gross assumptions.

The first sintering of zinc ores was done at the Bartlesville plant of the National Zinc Co., under the auspices of the late Otto Rissman. Mr. Rissman, who had had a long experience in the treatment of zinc ores, well realized all the difficulties of satisfactorily roasting zinc concentrates, which were becoming finer and dustier as each year went by—thus increasing the difficulties of roasting them in the existing forms of roasters, which were furnaces of the Ropp, Hegeler or similar types. Mr. Rissman's idea of the advantages of sinter was expressed in this way: in a zinc ore dead-roasted in a mechanical furnace there are many particles that are just like an egg; that is, they have a hard and impervious film of fused material on the outside, and in the retorting this completely cuts off access of the reducing gases to the center of the egg until a temperature has been reached at which this shell of the egg can be broken down through fusion. A particle of sintered zinc sulphide, on the contrary, is exactly like a piece of sponge. The moment the retort reaches the temperature at which the reactions can take place, they begin, because the reducing gases have ready access to the interior of the particles by means of the pores of the '" sponge." His faith in the advantages of sinter was amply borne out by the results obtained at the pioneer sintering plant for zinc ores installed by the National Zinc Company. Early Method of Sintering The method of procedure at Bartlesville was to roast the zinc concentrates down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 per cent residual sulphide sulphur; to cool these, then to wet them down to the proper moisture and mix them in the mixer of the sintering plant; then to sinter them by means of the heat available from the residual sulphides. The sulphur contents of the roast varied considerably, of course, as it was difficult with the furnaces in use to control the roasting exactly at any point short of dead roast. Hence at times the concentrates were roasted a little too low to sinter readily, and at such times the lack of sulphur was made up by the addition of raw concentrates to the sintering-machine charge in suitable amount.

By contrast with viscometry and sedimentation, no actual measurements of the applicability of Stokes' law to steelmaking have ever been reported; instead, the proof for and against Stokes' law has been inferred from the frequently observed phenomenon that inclusions collect in the top scum and the bottom of ingots. As such proof is unsatisfactory, continued reference to Stokes' law in steelmaking, even as a model for calculating the terminal velocities of rising inclusions, should be avoided. In fact, all conclusions that have been reached regarding size, density, and viscosity on the flotation of inclusions could be made more rationally without Stokes' law. A worthwhile exception is that of Mitsche1 who in 1934 used Stokes' law to show not only the expected effects of size, density, and viscosity on flotation but also the beneficial effects of i) melting under a slag layer (now Electro Slag Refining); ii) treating melts with synthetic slags (Ref. 2 gives recent applications); iii) bubbling an inert gas through the melt (recent applications in Refs. 3 and 4); and iv) altering the solid/ liquid interface characteristics. At this point, it should again be emphasized that the boundary conditions for which Stokes' law was derived place enormous restrictions on the law but its application, as noted earlier, can yield useful results in some fields under certain conditions and within well-defined limits. When compared with inclusions, which may be solid or liquid, spherical or irregular, dispersed or coagulated, interacting between themselves and the melt, floating in a liquid which is in a state of motion of varying intensity5 and contained in vessels of various shapes and sizes that may change with time as in a solidifying ingot, the conclusion is obvious-Stokes'

INT'RODUCTION An appreciable number of the oil fields in Western Canada are accumulations of heavy black oils in more or less unconsolidated sandstones. When the crude oils are produced by conventional means, they are frequently contaminated with both sand and oilfield water. The water is usually present as emulsified water, and the sand and other solid materials are suspended in the emulsions. The presence of the solid material in the crude oils is troublesome and, in general, little is known about the behavior of suspended solid particles in emulsions. The Stokes equation describes the behavior of suspended particles in homogeneous fluids in terms of particle size, density differential, and fluid viscosity. In the case of an emulsion, particle size and density differential introduce no difficulties, but considerable doubt centers around the viscosity term. It has been reported1 that the viscosity of an emulsion is related to the viscosity of the continuous phase by an expression of the type: n = a, (1 + a C) where n is the viscosity of the emulsion, n,, is the viscosity of the continuous phase, a is a constant, C' is the volume concentration of the disperse phase. The value of 17, the coefficient of the concentration term, has been determined for various systems, and has been found to vary from a value of 1 to 4.75. The value of 2.5 has been found to be applicable to a large number of systems, and this is the value that is widely used in the equation which then becomes the Einstein equation for the viscosity of emuls~ons. It is of considerable significance that neither the particle size nor the viscosity of the disperse phase enters the expression; the expression for the viscosity of the enlulsion is based solely upon the viscosity of the continuous phase and the concentration of the disperse phase. For crude oil emulsions the Simha equation and the data presented by Fukushima and lchimurai show a non-linear dependence of the viscosity ratio on the water concentration. While it is undoubtedly reasonable to use these data for predicting the viscosity of a specific emulsion, and while it is equally reasonable to expect the calculated viscosity to predict the settling rate of a solid spherical particle in the emulsion by means of Stokes equation, there seems to be no direct evidence that this calculation is indeed sound for describing the settling rates of solid particles in emulsions of water in crude oils. PROCEDURE A direct approach to the problem was thus indicated. Laboratory equipment was designed and built for the direct determination of the rate-of-fall characteristics of solid particles in emulsions of water in oil. Although the apparatus incorporated the basic design of conventional falling-ball viscometers, the study was concerned directly with the rate-of-fall characteristics of particles in emulsions, rather than with the viscosity of the emulsions as such. The crude oil used in this study was a very heavy black crude oil—the McMurray oil obtained from oil-soaked sands outcropping on the Athabasca River in northeastern Alberta. It was produced from the sands by strip mining followed by hot-water separation of the oil in the separation plant of the Alberta Government at Bitumount'. The primary plant product was a wet crude oil containing about 5 per cent solids and 35 per cent water. The final plant product was only slightly different from the native oil, having lost only about 4 per cent of its bulk as light ends during dehydration distillations. In the present investigation two kerosene dilutions of the McMurray oil were used in addition to the dry plant product. The McMurray oil contained 1.92 per cent solids. Analysis of the solids by X-ray diffraction showed the presence of kaolinite, pyrite, and illite as major constituents. with lesser amounts of quartz. THE only oil produced in Alaska in 1923 was obtained from a dozen small wells, one of which was drilled during the year on the single patented tract of petroleum land in Alaska, in the Katalla field. These wells are owned by the Chilkat Oil Co., which finds a ready local market for its product in the form of gasoline produced in its own refinery. The search for oil has been continued, but except in the Cold Bay field there has been no drilling in new fields during the year. Drilling was in progress during 1923 at Pearl Dome, 18 miles from the coast. Here the Associated Oil Co. sank two wells, about 500 and 950 ft. deep, but suspended drilling in June. The Standard Oil Co., drilling on the same structure, reached a depth of 300 ft. by August and is reported to have reached about 700 ft. by November. The company began the, installation of a second drill in August. George C. Martin, who hastily examined the Chignik region, south of the Cold Bay field, reports that what is known of the geology near Chignik is not favorable to the presence of petroleum. Kirtley Mather, who made a geologic survey of the northern part of the Alaska Peninsula, reports that some of the structures and the formations are favorable to the presence of oil. A small seepage has long been known in the region near the mouth of Douglas River, which flows into Cook Inlet. Sidney Paige last summer made an examination .of the oil seepages which have long been known near Cape Simpson, 50 miles southeast of Point Barrow, the northernmost point of Alaska. He reports that there are two very large seepages emanating from small ridges about a mile apart and several miles from the coast. These are marked by flowing petroleum, and cover many acres. There is a very large accumulation of petroleum residue at these seepages. The surface exposures consist of clay shales with hard thin partings of calcareous shale which lie nearly horizontal, and are probably, of Jurassic age. Mr. Paige and his two sub-parties explored a large area inland from the Arctic coast between Cape Beaufort on the south and Point Barrow and Cape Simpson on the north. He himself ascended the Meade River for 150 miles. These surveys indicate a wide distribution of what is believed to be the formation from which the Cape Simpson seepages emerge, which is probably of Jurassic age. These rocks near the north Arctic coast are little disturbed, but are increasingly folded to the south, toward the mountains. No other seepages have been found, but what is known of the geology is not unfavorable to an oil field. This entire region lies in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4, and it was examined by the Geological Survey at the request and expense of the Department of the Navy.

DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

An improved method of logging formation density has been developed in which the formation is bombarded with a collimuted beam of gamma rays. By means of a scintillation detector and pulse height discriminator, the gamma-ray energy band is accepted and recorded which corresponds to deepest penetration into the formation. Laboratory tests on a field tool revealed no borehole diameter effect for smooth holes and no effect of formation chemistry, except insofar as chemistry affects density. In extensive field tests, the density log has exhibited satisfactory agree-ment with core measurements and has correlated accurately with other logs. INTRODUCTION This paper describes an improved method of logging formation density by means of back-scattered gamma rays to penetrate the formation together with energy discrimination to select only that energy (or frequency) range corresponding to deepest penetration into the forma- tion. This method of density logging was developed at the La Habra laboratory of California Research Corp.* Field instruments have been built and tested by McCullough Tool Co. and commercial service has begun in some areas. All of the data discussed here were obtained for the original field tool. The density log can be a valuable adjunct to existing logs because of its use in determining porosity quantitatively. It is useful also in connection with seismic and gravity surveys where formation density information is of interest. PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES The intensity, I, of a beam of gamma rays after traversing a distance, x, in an absorbing medium is given by I = loe -ax where I, is the intensity of the beam entering the medium and a the attenuation constant or macroscopic cross section of the medium for gamma-ray absorption. The macroscopic cross section depends on the number and types of atoms per unit volume and the gamma-ray energy. In brief, it is the sum of the atomic cross sections of all atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material is the sum of the masses of all atoms per cubic centimeter. Thus, the density and the macroscopic cross section for gam-ma-ray absorption vary in propor- tion to the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material increases, of course, if the atomic masses increase without a change in the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. When the density increases in this latter way, the macroscopic cross section increases also, but disproportionately. This results from the fact that part of the gamma-ray absorption arises from the photoelectric effect and the pair-production effect**, which are proportional to the sixth and to the second power, respectively, of the atomic number of the absorber. The remainder of the absorption results from the Compton effect, and is directly proportional to the atomic number. The gamma rays that undergo Compton scattering are not immediately absorbed. Since these rays are scattered in all directions, a fraction will emerge from the face of the medium at which they entered. If a gamma-ray shield is placed between the source and detector, most gamma rays reaching the detector will be those scattered out of the medium. The intensity will depend on absorption and scattering in the medium, and so indicates the density of the medium. For gamma rays for which Compton scattering prevails, the intensity

IV. THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN STEEL AND IRON. It would be well to decide on a definite carbon-content to serve as a boundary line between ingot-iron and ingot-steel, between puddled-iron and puddled-steel, and between any other varieties of wrought-iron and weld-steel. Two plans have been considered. One is to draw this line at 0.32 per cent. of carbon or its equivalent in other elements, for the reason that this carbon-content appears to correspond to the critical point, 0, in the diagrams of Roberts-Austen and Rooze-boom.8 This has the merit of corresponding to a definite physical boundary. The other plan is to draw the boundary at 0.20 per cent. of carbon, because this is a convenient place to separate the important classes " soft steel " and " half-hard steel," so that if this point was adopted "ingot-iron " would be synonymous with "soft steel," and " ingot-steel " would be the equivalent of the two classes, " half-hard steel " and " hard steel."
