For a very brief description of the North Texas area and the general geological features with which it is associated, the reader is referred to the summary for 1935. As in previous years, the authors have been unable to undertakc the almost impossible task of isolating statistics for the hundreds of productive "spots" which are included within the generally productive areas of the several counties. However, pools that appear to be definitely isolated—as, for example, the Foard County production and the new pool recently developed southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County—are covered separately. During the year 1936, both routine development in proven or scmi-proven areas and exploratory drilling showed a decrease over the year 1935, there having been a total of 1453 wells drilled in the district during 1936, as compared to 1619 in 1935. It is also of interest to note that abandonments exceeded completions in 1936. Developments during 1936 While a number of local productive spots were found in Wilbarger, Archer and Wichita Counties, and numerous minor local extensions to older producing areas were developed in practically all the producing countics in the district, only two discoveries of sufficient importance to justify special mention were made. Anderson and Kerr No. 1 Bruhlmeyer, about two miles southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County, was completed in April, at a total depth of 2014 ft., for an initial production of 315 bbl. daily from a sand of Pennsylvanian (Canyon) age. Development has been rapid and the field is about drilled up. During November the 100 wells in the field averaged about 40 bbl daily. The structure appears to be a small fold associated with the northeast flank of the main uplift, which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Cooke and Montague Counties.

Formation and slow solidification of a molten zone in a homogeneous ingot produces a discontinuity in solute concentration at the boundary of the zone and a gradient of concentration within the zone. By using two solutes, one a donor, the other an acceptor, step or graded pn barriers can be produced. EXPLOITATION of the difference in concentration between a molten solution and the solid which freezes from it is continued in this paper. The normal segregation which results from this difference has been used for purification'.'2 and for pn barrier-formation in semiconductors."4 By means of traveling molten zones this difference has been used to effect multistage separations and to eliminate segregation in ingots." a It will be shown here that by means of stationary molten zones this difference can be used to produce discontinuities in concentration. In particular it will be shown that a pn or npn barrier can be made by the simple act of melting and refreezing a portion of a block of semiconductor, provided that the block contains proper concentrations of a donor and an acceptor in solid solution. Assumptions The operation of melting and slow refreezing will be called remelting and the interface between liquid and solid at the start of refreezing will be called the remelt bormdary. While remelting may be done for various shapes of starting crystal and remelt zone it will be assumed that the remelt zone is cylindrical, its length being measured in the direction of freezing, which is normal to the remelt boundary, and

Gentlemen of the American Institude of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to- night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now posses. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. I presume the remarks made to-night will bring this out very prominently. This is no disgrace, for with the means here-

Abstract-Lead cake, a zinc smelter flue dust residue, consists primarily of lead sulfate. Characteristic properties of lead cake were determined in order to aid the understanding of reaction mechanisms involved in bismuth removal from lead cake by sulfuric acid digestion. Sp gr (specific gravity) measurements, surface area measurements, and photomicrographs revealed that the particles of lead cake are quite porous and seem to consist of an agglomeration of submicron grains (0.4 pm) fused together in a manner similar to cement clinker. Analysis of experimental rate data, which was independent of particle size, indicates that the dissolution reaction involves two distinct, rate limiting steps. The initial stage of reaction appears to be limited mainly by intergranular diffusion of the reactant, hydrogen ion, while the latter stage of reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion of soluble reaction products through the reaction product layer of the individual grains.

When the cyanide process came into general use, late in the nineteenth century, chlorination was quickly supplanted, but amalgamation yielded place more slowly, being still the major process at many plants, where it is followed by cyanidation of the tailings. The research work of the Denny brothers in South Africa' was probably the most important contribution of its time to the metallurgy of gold. By grading analyses of mill products, they pointed to the necessity of fine grinding to accomplish maximum extraction by cyanide. The work here described is merely an extension of the Dennys' method. Developing the fine-grinding principle, the steps of "crushing in solution" and of "all-sliming" were logical sequels, though both had been attempted early in the history of the cyanide process. Crushing in solution introduced certain complications in amalgamation; when "all-sliming " was adopted it was observed that the omission of amalgamation did not materially affect the total recovery. Thus the field of the older process has become much restricted, being at present confined to ores which, yielding freely to amalgamation, either are too low in grade to show an economic advantage in "all-sliming," or present chemical or other difficulties making the use of cyanide solution unadvisable during the crushing and preparation of the ore. South African ores are typical of the former class; Homestake ores are of both classes, but even in these instances the amalgamation work is being curtailed and greater burdens thrown on the cyanide plants. It is obvious that the time required for the dissolution of gold depends on the size of its particles. In an effort to determine the critical size, the following laboratory method was evolved. A standard amalgamation test2 had already been established, which involves the agitation of about 100 gm. of ore with 20 gm. of pure mercury, the latter then being separated and its gold contents determined. This method was applied directly to certain mill products with interesting results, a few of which may be noted here. The column "Free Gold" gives the value per ton thus amalgamated, as against the " Total Gold " determined by fire assay.

.NONE of the methods now in use for the transportation of materials underground is entirely free from more or less serious objection. The great flexibility, ease, of control and economy of operation of electric tramming are accompanied by the serious menace of a trolley-wire distributing system. As the gasoline locomotive has even greater flexibility of application and requires no similar dangerous distributing system, it might be considered a safety device which would make possible the elimination of the dangerous trolley system were it not possessed of other objectionable qualities peculiar to itself. It is found that the exhaust gases from the engine may be injurious to the health of those breathing the air in which the locomotive has been operating. While electric shock may kill the individual who makes contact with uninsulated parts, the gasoline engine may be detrimental to the health of all those who have to work within the atmosphere corrupted by exhaust gases. The degree of pollution meas-ures the magnitude of the menace. This may be negligible at times, but with careless operation it becomes serious. The exhaust gases from an engine are composed of, nitrogen, a little free oxygen, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, the last two being considered dangerous. The presence of carbon dioxide as a product of combustion of the gasoline was recognized as an objection from the beginning of the use of these machines, but attention was called to the fact that the amount produced was relatively small as compared to that from other sources of this gas, and it was not likely to be made in dangerous quantities. The effect of carbon dioxide, except in relatively large percentages, is confined to the effect it may have in reducing the oxygen content of the air that is breathed.

The phase diagrams of binary systems of some of the transition elements of Groups IV, V, and VI were used to compute the partial free energies of these elements and the free energy of formation of their Laves-type compounds. From these data, isothermal sections of ternary phase diagrams were calculated and compared with experimental results. DURING the investigation of ternary and quaternary high temperature systems formed by the transition elements of Groups IV, V and VI, the binary phase diagrams for these elements available in the literature were studied. In this study, the free energies of formation of the compounds formed in these binary systems were calculated; these values were then used to determine the general shape of the ternary and quaternary phase diagrams. Above 900°C, the transition elements of Groups IV, V, and VI are all bcc and form only Laves-type compounds in binary systems. The investigation was based on the binary phase diagrams published by Hansen.1 The Cr-Nb system was constructed from the data of Elyutin and Funke.' Several unpublished phase diagrams were taken from Schmidt'sLo and English'sl1 compilations. THE BINARY SYSTEMS valuations of the Thermodynamic Functions. Rostokers evaluated the boundaries of the (a + b) field in Ti-base alloys with a two-constant equation. The authors' interest is mainly in the center of the diagrams; therefore the miscibility gaps in the Zr-Nb, W-Cr, Ta-Zr, Ta-Hf, and Ti-W systems were used to evaluate the thermodynamic behavior of the binary systems. THE strike of the coal miners began on April 1, as had been expected, the entire force of unionized miners-both anthracite and bituminous-going out and making this the most widespread strike of record. Up to the present writing there has been no serious inconvenience to industry in general, the accu-mulated stocks of coal being large and the non-union mines having continued to make a substantial production. However, the union labor leaders, having concentrated their efforts toward inducing the non-union miners to go out also, met with some measure of success in certain fields and created a shortage of coking coal, which caused iron makers to bank a few furnaces. The strike of textile workers in New England spread further. Here and there, throughout the country there were sporadic troubles with the builders. Rail-way labor was the subject of continued palavers, which did not get anywhere. On the whole the events of April were in line with the forecast that this would be a year of labor troubles. In domestic politics, the soldier bonus bill, having been passed by the House, went to committee consider-ation in the Senate. Public opposition to it manifestly waxed. On the floor of the Senate the tariff bill was under consideration and is drawing nigh to passage, without there being much consideration of its probable economic consequences. It is going to be a very high tariff and there is much in it that is equivalent to subsidizing small and normally unprofitable industries at the expense of the people as a whole. Abroad affairs were more quiet, superficially at least; than they were in March. In Egypt, India and South Africa things calmed, down, so far as we know, but in Ireland there was continued turmoil. The Irish, having won their freedom to the same degree as the Canadians, have entered upon violent quarrels among themselves, more over phrases than anything .else, so far as we can see. Lloyd George obtained a spectacular vote of confidence from Parliament and thus postponed, the exigency of a general election.

Transit A light weight, totally enclosed theodolite, especially designed for mining, has been placed on the market by Askania Werke, A. G. The instrument weighs only 41/4 lb and measures 51/8 x 71/2 in. without tripod and in a waterproof aluminum hood. It may be mounted on tripod or bracket without removing the protective hood. [ ] Standard equipment includes diagonal eyepiece rotating in all directions which eliminates need to be in line with scope for sighting and makes an auxiliary scope unnecessary for steep sights. The transit reads direct to 1 minute and may be estimated to 6 seconds by means of optical micrometer on both horizontal and vertical circles. The telescope in vertical position serves as optical plummet, sighting through an opening in the base. The instrument is shown above mounted for attaching to a pin driven in timber or rock, eliminating tripod or set-up bar in cramped quarters. The chain clamp in the lower picture is used on timber or steel ground supports. Complete with carrying case and set-up brackets, ready for use in a raise, it weighs less than 6 lb, and the protective hood remains on until the instrument is securely mounted. [ ] Accessories for increasing versatility of this mining theodolite are: tripod, electric illumination for optical micrometer and reticule, close range objective lens, and objective lens prism for sighting vertically in front of the instrument. The committee appointed .by W. R. Ingalls, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, to nominate candidates for the' annual gold medal of the Society consisted of E. G. Spilsbury, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Bradley Stoughton. This committee recommended Mr. Schneider of the Creuzot Works in France for achievements in ferrous metallurgy, which recommendation was approved by the Society. From the report of the committee, the following facts relative to Mr. Schneider's career are taken: Born in 1868, Charles Eugene Schneider undertook the management of the Schneider establishment in 1898, after the death of his father, Henri Schneider. Under his enlightened management, the Schneider establishments have been considerably extended, their activity being not only directed to increasing production, but also to spreading more and more their scope for action in all branches of industry-in metallurgy, mechanical and electrical construction, shipbuilding, artillery and ammunition, and in public works. During the 10 years preceding the war, the number of employees in these establishments, and without counting those of the more numerous subsidiaries, increased approximately 50 per cent. While giving to peace industries all the attention necessitated by the progress in science and the continual improvement in industrial methods and products, Eugene Schneider, with a perspicacity that recent events have justified in a striking manner, especially directed his

THE Magma copper vein trends east-west, dips 70° south, and cuts through a 6000-ft thickness of limestones, quartzites, shale, diabase, and schist. The vein is itself a fault with -a horizontal offset of 500 ft on the formation contacts in the two walls. There are two principal faults of large displacement and numerous smaller steep and flat faults that complicate the prediction of ore occurrence. A study of the geology, its systematic recording to facilitate ready reference, and graphic methods of interpretation of mineralization have aided the exploration, development, and mining of the ore. In making predictions of the distribution of mineable ore bodies and their shape in critical areas, studies are made of "mineralization contours" and "mineralization trends," which are developed on a longitudinal section of the vein from variations in the concentration of the combined base metal content as shown by assays of available openings in the mine.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9.A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

NOTE ON HAALCK'S FORMULA QUANTITATIVE interpretation of magnetic anomalies is admittedly a difficult process. Few authors have attempted a general approach to this problem. A [ ] number of publications can be found widely scattered through scientific periodicals, which present particular solutions obtained by the introduction of simplifying assumptions, such as the reduction to an equivalent magnet or pole, or the hypothesis of a very thin vein. The practical applications of these solutions are necessarily very restricted though they have given satisfactory results in isolated cases. Probably the most widely known equation of this type was given by Haalck.l His classic work contains curves calculated for typical conditions, and has now become a standard reference. However, a close scrutiny of Haalck's derivation reveals that, aside from the hypothesis of a thin vein, it rests on the

As pointed out in previous studies, estimates of petroleum reserves if they are to be of value must not only presuppose a clear understanding of what is actually meant by reserves but must be subject to constant revision to conform with changes in their component factors. When such estimates are analyzed it must be clear that it is virtually impossible to obtain comparable figures reflecting the same degree of accuracy, to represent the reserves not only in various countries, but at times even of different fields in the same country. Estimates of reserves in the United States, subject to frequent independent checks, are obviously more reliable than those furnished, for instance, by the Soviet Government, as the latter must be accepted at their face value and are open to the suspicion of being made to conform with predetermined programs of propaganda. Any tabulation of the reserves of all producing countries, therefore, gives a total that is misleading, as the component items arc not arrived at on the same basis and therefore are not homogeneous in a true sense. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground, usually associated with natural gas, is or can be brought to the surface, and although practically all the natural gas underground can be rccovered, in actual practice in some fields a large part of the gas that reaches the mouth of the well is wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 to 35 per cent of the petroleum underground in proven fields is actually economically recovered. Estimates of reserves, therefore, should make clear the distinction between the known amount of oil underground in producing fields and the portion that actually can be brought to the surface. It cannot be overemphasized that as a result of the operation of the "Law of Capture," which controls subsoil ownership in the United States on comparatively small landholdings that seldom if ever cover the entire producing area, the oil fields are not as economically exploited as some forrign fields, and that as a result (were it not for the easy accessibility of the domestic market, the largest in the world) some American production would now be unprofitable in open competition with foreign oils.

12.4 Application of Research Findings. After the findings of research have been evaluated and approved, there remains the problem of translating them into practical usage. It frequently happens that this is the more difficult phase of the research project. Hitherto, the problems have been largely associated with material objects and scientific laws. When the findings of research are implemented in the field, the human factor becomes the most important element bearing on success or failure. From this point on, the attitudes and reactions of people of all kinds are involved, and just how they are involved and their relation to successful implementation is the subject of the remainder of this section. 12.41. Management Attitudes. To engage in research at all implies management backing to a degree. But this could be dictated by overall company policy or by just some executives in the hierarchy of management. The existence of research per se does not necessarily mean that there is a solid, unanimous echelon of management executives who sincerely believe in the fruits of research, who have an earnest desire to make breakthroughs, and who have a willingness to take calculated risks. Under the ideal condition of complete management backing, translating the results of research into practice is greatly facilitated. If management accepts the results of research as valid, the order is given, or it has been established by precedent that those results will be implemented. The rest of the organization will have grown to accept the fact that this is so, and that the results must be given a fair trial in the field. However, this ideal condition probably exists but rarely, and it is against a background of incomplete, or partial, management backing that most results of research must be implemented. At the present time, the climate for research in the mining field is less than perfect but is improving rapidly as the realization grows within the industry that the way toward taking its proper place in the Space Age is by applying to mining the philosophy and techniques of research that made the Space Age possible.

Shales containing "kerogen," or bituminous matter, which on destructive distillation yield oily and tarry matters resembling petroleum are here designated as oil-shales. They differ from oil-bearing shales from which petroleum may be obtained by so-called mechanical means. The educts obtained by the destructive distillation resemble some or all the varieties of petroleum, depending on the character of the shale and the mode of treatment. Some shale oils have a paraffin base, some an asphaltic base, or a combination; some run high in sulfur compounds. The methods of refining and cracking, therefore, are essentially the same as are used in refining petroleums. In 1860, in this country, over fifty companies were successfully distilling various natural bituminous materials for the production of " coal oil," used for illuminating purposes. The discovery of petroleum and the failure of these companies to save and utilize the valuable byproduct, ammonia, brought about their inevitable doom. Prior to that time, more or less successful efforts were made to produce from the shales of Scotland oils for illuminating and heating purposes. Competition of native petroleum from the United States early eliminated some of these companies and with the entrance of oil from the Russian and other fields into the world's markets, the Scottish oil-shale industry underwent serious and trying experiences until, in 1916, only four (Scottish) were paying concerns. These survived only through energy and the application of skill in saving valuable byproducts. A few companies have successfully operated in France and New Zealand. The Canadian Government showed active interest in the New Brunswick shales, which exist in quantity and are more valuable than the Scottish shales. The retarded development of that valuable asset of the Province of New Brunswick was most unfortunate, especially when the product was so much needed in the prosecution of the war. SERVICE failures in brass condenser tubes are often due to corrosion. One of the commonest types of corrosion reveals a surface structure of redeposited copper.1 The study of the effect of alloy addition agents in preventing this kind of corrosion has received impetus from the extensive publication of Bengough and May.2 The mechanism of such inhibition gauged from immersion corrosion,' cell corrosion,' and electrolytic potential' measurements is controversial. This controversy may be attributed in part to a lack of definite knowledge5 of the actual nature of the initial films formed in corrosion experiments. In our own corrosion work on copper and 70-30 brass this lack became apparent and necessitated an examination of surface films by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. The present paper is but an introduction to the subject of inhibition and reports the structure of films formed in active corrodents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The arsenical coppers and brasses used in this investigation were made by one of the writers* in the plant of the Revere Copper and Brass Co. at Rome, N. Y. Standard commercial melting practice was followed. O.F.H.C. copper and electrolytic zinc were used and all arsenic additions were made by additions of a master copper alloy. The final analyses are given in Table I. Likewise, the extrusion, cold-rolling, and intermediate anneals employed followed standard usage. Final heat-treatments were given to all materials to produce a similar grain size (0.035 to 0.045 mm. for brass and 0.015 to 0.025 for [ ] copper) for the alloys containing various percentages of arsenic. Samples ¼ by ½ by ¼ in. were cut from sheet material resurfaced and finished with 0000 metallographic papers. The surfaces were all degreased in alcohol and benzine before immersion. After immersion in the corrodent, they were washed gently in tap water, dipped first in alcohol and then in pure benzine and allowed to dry in the diffraction apparatus. In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main Tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials, it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted. A tight partition of 2-in. (5.08-cm.) plank was erected between the auxiliary and the adjoining hoisting compartments, for better protection of men riding on the cages. The application of concrete made this
