I was this morning an interested listener to the remarks of Mr. Ashbel Welch in regard to his designing a new section for steel rails, in 1866; and for the salze of the truth of history, and in order t:, give the credit to an American (and where it rightfully belongs) of higning the first section for steel rails, which was intelligently adapted to that material; I beg to state the following facts: On the 14th of August, 1866, Mr. Ashbel Welch gave me an order for 200 tons of steel rails, to be made bbr the Camden and Amboy Railroad, from a section designed by him. ANTHRACITE mining in the United States is concentrated in a 480 sq mile section of north- eastern Pennsylvania. The producing area is broken up into four fields, known as the Northern, Southern, Eastern Middle and Western Middle fields. These areas represent intricately folded coal measures in synclinal residuals left by erosional forces. Destruction by erosion has eliminated some 95 pct of the original coal. However, discounting the 5 billion tons removed to date, 8 billion tons are believed to be still recoverable.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Harrison W Craver, until recently librarian of the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, to be Director of the combined libraries of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the United Engineering Society. DR. HARRISON W. CRAVER. Dr. Craver was born in Owaneco, Illinois, August 10, 1875. He was educated in the public schools of Carmi, Illinois, and Terre Haute, Indiana, and the Rose Polytechnic Institute, from which he was graduated in 1895, having specialized in industrial chemistry. The early gazetteers mentioned the mining of coal in this state but gave no output data Several of the bulletins of the Illinois Coal Mine Investigations give the results of some historical studies of parts of the state and some early production figures, but some make no mention of this phase of the industry Reports to the state by the various railroads of tonnages carried give figures for coal carried, but usually do not specify its origin These figures, however, when used for roads which crossed the various coal producing counties, and divided between counties in accordance with the little data available have furnished the base for the most of the estimates of county productions Some county histories furnished a few facts, and some were obtained from various other sources

The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow-was pulled by oxen and was used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. The tractor-mounted ripper, introduced a little over ten years ago, extended the capability of the ripper because of greatly improved maneuverability and the additional weight which could be brought to bear upon the ripper tooth. Increases through the last ten years in tractor weight and horsepower further increased ripper capability until now, in some geographic areas, hardly any rock is unchallenged by them.

BICRYSTAL specimens grown from the melt have been used extensively for investigations of the influence of grain boundaries on plastic deformation. The bicrystals are usually of predetermined orientation prepared by seeded growth from the melt in milled graphite boats. This technique has been described in detail by Chalmers.' Since the direction that the grain boundary follows during growth is affected by both thermal conditions and crystallography, a difficulty arises in maintaining the grain boundary position constant along the length of the specimen. The Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) is investigating the application of its oil shale retorting technology to coal processing in its 25-tpd retorting pilot plant. Low temperature char, with a high heating value, plus tar and gas have been produced from high moisture content, low heating value, subbituminous coal. The process, which has been named the TOSCOAL process, uses heated ceramic balls to provide the heat for retorting the coal. One ton of as-mined, subbituminous coal produces approximately 1/2 ton of char, 1/2 barrel of tar, and 1600 standard cubic feet (scf) of gas when the retorting is conducted at 970°F. Properties and yields of the products are presented and compared with Fischer assay yields.

JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition and develoment planning follow. While prospecting for mineral deposits, geologists are frequently asked what they have found or hope to find. The response is usually descriptive, such as: "50 million tons of 1% copper," and the economic implications are deferred until a capital investment decision is required. At that time a financial analysis integrating the four analysis components-tonnage and average grade above cutoff grade, capital and operating costs, product value, appropriate profit or loss accounting-are completed.

Are from the Greater Butte Project is hoisted through the new Kelley shaft. In 1946 when plans were formulated for the Kelley mine, two test cave blocks were mined by using the facilities of the old St. Lawrence mine. These blocks, known as the Adams No. 1 and Adams No. 2, produced more than half a million tons of ore. The experiment proved beyond all doubt that cave mining was possible- and economical-in Butte. Adams No. 1 was patterned after Inspiration cave blocks. Adams No. 2 was a slusher type, with the slusher lane on the first floor above the haulage crosscut and at right angles to it. Thirty-horsepower electric hoists slushed ore from 48-in. scraper buckets directly into cars for haulage to the shaft. These cars were the 57-cu ft Granby type hauled by 6-ton battery locomotives over 40-lb, 18-in. gage track. Prior to this time the largest slushing machines used at Butte were 15-hp electric hoists pulling 36-in. scrapers.
