It is now well known that certain pig-irons give a considerably smaller percentage of sulphur when determined by evolution-methods than when determined by oxidation-methods. The most striking examplcs of such irons are those made either wholly or in large part from New Jersey magnetites containing more or less titanium. It is never safe to use an evolution-method on such iron; for it is quite common that the sulphur result by evolution is only one-half or even one-third as great as that obtained by oxidation. For this reason, evolution-methods should be discarded, except in the analysis of pig-irons known to contain the sulphur in a state of combination from which it is evolved as sulphuretted hydrogen on treatment with hydrochloric acid. A good example of an iron containing, in the residue, sulphur insoluble in hydrochloric acid having come to our attention, it was determined to try to isolate a suspected insoluble sulphide. A large piece of high-silicon gray-forge iron was accordingly selected as the most promising material to work on. This piece was dissolved slowly, through several months, in dilute hydrochloric acid, aided by the electric current, yielding a soft graphitic residue. The object of dissolving a mass of iron, instead of drillings, was to prevent the crushing, by the drill, of any insoluble crystalline compound that might be present. The first step in the preparation was to break up the graphitic material and put it through bolting-cloth of 157 meshes to the linear inch. This was done by crushing the mass under the fingers on the bolting-cloth fastened over the top of a beaker, while a stream of water from a wash-bottle washed the finer portions through the cloth. The pore pressure must be included in any discussion of the state of stress within a rock. Rock cylinders at elevated stress levels, loaded uniaxially to a stress less than the yield strength, can be fractured by holding the constraints constant and increasing the pore fluid pressure. This can be described in terms of the Mohr envelopes using effective stresses. The effective stress concept can simplify data with various confining and pore pressures. When the pore and confining pressures are equal, the pore pressure appears to be totally effective in reducing the confining pressure effects. The area over which the pore pressure acts has been the subject of some prior discussions. Terzaghi 1 defined boundary porosity as ". . . the ratio of that part of the area of the potential surface which is in contact with the interstitial liquid and the total area of this surface." His method of calculation included a discussion of splitting failure which was objected to by Mr. Kessler, National Bureau of Standards. The values calculated by Terzaghi were close to unity. Leliavsky,2 using unjacketed cement cores, reported that the interstitial fluid pressure appeared to act upon about 92% of the surface of failure. He concluded: "The fraction of the area of cross-section over which the internal pressure acts can therefore have nothing to do with ordinary porosity, and the results of the experiments tend to support Professor Terzaghi's views." In 1947 Balmer3 determined the boundary porosity of concrete when the confining and pore pressures were equal. He also found values close to unity. The production of oil in Colombia during 1933 was at the lowest level since the completion of the loop of the Andian pipe line in 1927. The commercial production amounted to 13,157,641 bbl., all of which was produced from the Infantas and La Cira structures of the Tropical Oil Company. One of the most important developments was the discovery of what may be commercial production on the Colombian Petroleum (Gulf) Company's Tarra anticline on the Barco Concession in eastern Colombia near the Venezuelan border. This promises to become the second commercially productive area developed in Colombia and, perhaps, one of major importance. Applications made in 1931 for concessions under the new Colombian petroleum law were ratified covering the Putana application of the Tropical Oil Co. and others of local Colombian and French interests west of the Carare River. On none of these concessions has any development work yet been initiated. South American Gulf Oil Company The following information covering the activities of the South American Gulf Oil Co. was furnished by E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of the company. Magdalena Valley.—No development work was undertaken during the year either on the Valenzuela property acquired from the Colombian Syndicate or on the lands obtained from the Leonard Oil Development Co. near the Sogamoso River. The Valenzuela property was relinquished and a portion of the material was removed therefrom to the Leonard property near by. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The Colombian Petroleum Co., controlled by the Gulf interests, pursued an active development campaign on the Chaux-Folsom or so-called Barco Concession in the Department of North Santander. The drilling of the first well was begun early in the year on the north Petrolea dome of the Tarra anticline and at 490 ft. a heavy flow of oil, gas and salt water was encountered. On blowing in unexpectedly, the well caught fire, and after being extinguished was controlled only by pumping large quantities of cement into the formation and plugging the well. (Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May. 1877.) THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose will be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others? This is the ques¬tion with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mines and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Results of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.-During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plans and aims of this laboratory. Since that time we have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convinced that we are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers leave school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. PRIor to the World War most of the barite used in the United States for manufacturing lithopone and barium chemicals was imported. Germany, by virtue of an abundance of high-grade ore and low labor costs, was in a position to dominate the world market. With the cessation of imports and with the war demand for barium chemicals, the barium chemical industry and the mining of barite became well established in the United States. This industry has continued to expand because of the increasing use of lithopone. In 1914 the sales of domestic crude barite was 52,919 tons and in 1934 it was 209,850 tons. Barite deposits of economic importance occur in at least 20 states, but the principal producers in 1934 were Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, California and Arizona. The main mining centers are located near the crude barite markets of the three principal marketing districts—the Pacific Coast, the Midwestern area, and the Eastern area. The Pacific Coast is supplied entirely by California, Nevada, and Arizona. The Midwestern area uses most of the Missouri crude and a small amount from the southern states. The eastern market is the chief competitive area. Practically all of the imported crude is marketed there; also the bulk of the southern crude and ground barite. In addition, this area absorbs a small part of the Missouri crude and 80 per cent of the ground barite. Besides the advantage of low delivered costs and purity of product, the imported barite has commanded a price differential because it is soft rather than hard, like many of the domestic ores. The inherent physical properties of the southern ores remain, but the purity can be controlled to a great extent by beneficiation. Simple washing or gravity concentration has sufficed in the past, but in many cases a more efficient process now becomes imperative to remove impurities not amenable to these methods. Certain deposits now being opened are of lower grade and require more precise milling conditions. In some ores, the kind of impurities has changed as the mining advanced.

IN response to many urgent requests for a concrete realization of a series of standard temperatures that would be available to any one anywhere for the standardization of pyrometers and the reproduction of the standard scale of temperature for use in laboratories and industrial works, the Bureau, in 1916, made arrangements with several manufacturers to prepare a series of- pure metals that could best serve this purpose. After the necessary preliminary work of chemical analysis, as a check on the purity, together with exact determinations of melting or freezing points, the Bureau began, in 1917, the issuing of melting -point standards of tin, zinc, aluminum, and copper. At the outset, it was decided to secure metals of the highest purity and of American manufacture, and this was accomplished in a more satisfactory manner than anticipated. In the preparation of these temperature standards, the Bureau has had the hearty cooperation of several American companies, which have succeeded in producing metals highly satisfactory for the purpose and of as high a state of purity as could have been obtained anywhere. Each company that undertook the responsibility of furnishing a metal for this series of standards exercised most painstaking care to produce the best possible product as to purity and uniformity. A representative of the Bureau witnessed the actual preparation of each metal. The 300 and 400-lb. (136 and 181-kg.) samples making up the first series were all used up, with the exception of the aluminum, early in 1919. The Bureau has taken steps to replenish its stocks of metals serving as pyrometric standards and to the list has been added lead. The copper and lead are being ordered this time in 1-ton lots and the zinc and tin in 300-lb. (136 kg.) lots as before. The wide dissemination of these samples will be appreciated when it is noted that the metals are distributed by the Bureau inn quantities of 50 cu. cm. each, at $2 a sample and accompanied by a certificate which gives the melting point as determined by samples from the same lot. The manufacture and detailed description of chemical analyses, physical measurements, and precautions in use of these pyrometric standards, are described in detail in the Bureau Circulcar No., 66.

The data in this paper were collected to show both the volume and speed with which bituminous mines have indefinitely suspended operation while economic advantage in the industry has so gravely declined. The study was limited to the bituminous coal-mining states east of the Mississippi River, wherein conditions affecting production and demand are more common respectively to all of the mining districts included and represent about 95 per cent of the nation's coal mining. Data for the compilation of these statistics and for the construction of these graphs have been obtained in all cases from state mine department reports, except from those of Ohio and Virginia. In Virginia essential individual mine data were secured from an authentic source, but no individual Ohio mine information is obtainable, because all Ohio fact-gathering agencies are prohibited by law from revealing such data. In other states the facts were tabulated and later checked with the cooperation of Chief Mine Inspectors. In all, excluding Ohio, over 17,000 individual annual mine returns were examined. Special information was secured from each state mine department about suspensions in 1932. Accurate information was not available from all states about nine abandonment due to exhaustion of coal reserves, and while these were completed for several states, it has not been shown because it was not perfected for all states. However, the total observed sample mas comprehensive enough to show that exhaustion accounts for a very limited part of the suspended production. Wherever mention is made of '(suspended productionJ' the largest annual output of the mine in the five years prior to suspension has been taken as the measure of its probable production had it continued to operate. A mine is not regarded in this category, as having suspended, when it merely ceases to produce. The word "suspension" is used only where there is a complete abandonment of activity for an indefinite period, as evidenced by the fact that both ventilation and pumping are discontinued.

One of the more widespread experimental procedures currently used in experimental rock and soil mechanics work involves the use of a short circular cylinder loaded axially between nonrigid end plates1-5 (Fig. 1a and b). It is widely recognized 6 that a number of undesirable features are connected with this test procedure ; the most noteworthy of these is the development of a nonuniform stress distribution throughout the specimen resulting from an elastic mismatch between the specimen and the end plates. In general, the end plates and specimen possess different elastic properties. As a result of this elastic mismatch, the uniform distribution of stress and strain applied to the end plates is altered at the interface, the degree of which is dependent not only on the magnitude of the elastic mismatch but also on whether there is any relative movement between the specimen and the end plate. A convenient measure of the elastic mismatch is the ratio (vp/Ep) / (v8/E3), where v and E are Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus and the subscripts s and p refer to the specimen and end plate, respectively. For most tests that use steel end plates, (v8/E8) is greater than (vp/Ep) ; i.e., the specimen tends to expand or contract laterally more than the end plates. Because of the frictional restraint offered by the end plates, shearing stresses are developed at the interface that, for compression testing, act inward producing a "clamping" effect (Fig. lc). The effect of this "clamping" is to produce a state of triaxial stress throughout the specimen. Fig. Id illustrates the coordinate system and stress nomenclature used. IN the practice of ore finding the geologist is continually confronted with the question of oreshoot extension, so that the general problem seems worthy of systematic investigation. This problem appears when the reserves are estimated and when the advisability of deepening the shaft comes up. Moreover, there is need for lower development cost to keep pace with cost reductions in other departments, or even to offset a rising cost of ore finding or ore following. This can be gained by close geologic control of the development; and much of the geology involved is that bearing on the downward, upward, and horizontal extensions of shoots. Furthermore, the purchase of a mine or prospect often depends directly on the question of shoot extension; because it is seldom that the ore is fully developed and the purchase price is almost invariably based largely on "possible" and geologically prospective ore. Most current methods for estimating '(possible" and the more nebulous classes of ore are crude and indecisive. In the following pages the extension of oreshoots is the major theme, although the more basic subject, the general art of ore finding, is given some space. (A) Direct Methods of Extension Prediction (I) Extrapolation and Interpolation of Shoots by Use of Conventional Geologic and Assay Plans, Projections and Cross-sections There is little need for stressing the desirability of detailed geologic plans, assay plans, projections, and cross-sections as a basis for the study and extension prediction of shoots. Underground and surface mapping, in most cases, ought to be done in exhaustive detail. All features of obvious bearing should be mapped and it is good practice to record all possible details, some of which may become significant when studied in the ensemble. It should be emphasized that the mapping should be done with an impartial mind, with interpretation reduced to the minimum. The symbols of the map can be made to distinguish observed facts from interpretation.

Recent developments related to petroleum engineering discussed in this paper are: 1. Drilling wells in with oil or the use of chemical compounds or (Imud solvents" for removing rotary mud from wells in order to increase or make possible oil production. 2. Comparison of results of electrical logging methods in locating water, as shown in a recent test on a well in the Los Angeles Basin. 3. A new method for logging formations through casing, known as the Stratagraph. Drilling Wells in with Oil or the Use of Chemical Compounds or Mud Solvents During the time that the California fields showed high gas pressures, the pressure of the gas within the formation was sufficiently great to break down the mud wall or cake formed while the well was drilling. That this did not always occur was demonstrated by the fact that in some of the older fields new wells sometimes had substantially higher initial productions than other wells near by. The explanation seemed to be that some sands were mudded off in the original drilling. Their pressure was then not great enough to break down the mud wall in competition with the higher pressure of the sands, but the situation reversed itself so that a later well benefited by the pressure in these originally weaker sands. As time passed, in wells deeper than 5000 ft. the difficulty of bringing wells on production became more pronounced. This led to a hunt for substitutes, of which a number have been tried. The one that has proved most successful in our experience at Ventura is known as the Nobs solvent. At well No. 1 of the Associated-Ventura Land & Water Co. when it was recompleted in February 1936, about 10 days were spent in trying to bring the well in in the regular manner, but only about 113 bbl. of water could be swabbed from the well, and even this quantity decreased as time passed. The Nobs solvent was spotted in the bottom of the hole opposite the perforations, inverted Guiberson swab rubbers were used on the drillpipe and the hole was down-swabbed in stages, beginning

Tests are described that show that back pressure on flowing wells is a waste rather than a conservation of natural forces. Stop-cocking, however, gives encouraging results. VARIOUS estimates have been made as to the percentage of oil left in a field after the wells have become so small that it is no longer practical to produce them. Engineers have given the matter much study and can substantiate their figures by data taken from fields from the Appalachians to California. The average oil sand has a porosity of about 20 per cent., which gives a capacity per acre-foot of approximately 1500 bbl. The sand thickness in Oklahoma pools averages 20 ft. With 20 per cent. porosity and a 20-ft. sand thickness, the capacity per acre is 30,000 bbl., yet these pools will seldom yield more than 5000 bbl. to the acre. These figures support the theory that at least 50 per cent. of the oil remains in a sand after all known methods to recover it have been used. Certainly we can never recover all the oil, unless in years to come oil becomes so rare and yet so necessary that the price will justify sinking shafts into the abandoned fields and regular mining methods of drifting and stoping. However, with improved methods of production and conservation of the natural agencies of expulsion, we should be able to increase recovery. It is with this in mind that this paper, relating to the effect of back pressure on wells, is presented. Except in the fields where production is caused by hydrostatic pressure, the chief agency for getting, oil out of the sand into the hole is the gas that occurs with the oil. After the pressure has declined, probably gravity also is a factor, but not an important one. With a given amount of oil in a sand and a given amount of gas occurring with the oil, the ratio of gas volume per barrel of oil is the key to the ultimate recovery from that sand. Our efforts should be along lines that will, lower this ratio and make the gas, the agency given us by nature, do its work better and yield more of the oil, of which it is a part.

In a broad sense automotive fuel is simply fuel in general and includes coal, coke, wood, charcoal and gas, in addition to the full range of liquid combustibles. All of these are actually used, or have been used, commercially to some extent as fuel for automotive vehicles. The steam lorry burning coal and coke is a common sight on the roads of England. The fact that these coal-fired steam lorries have a distinct advantage in taxes over the conventional gasoline-driven lorry probably explains the survival of this vehicle. The omnibus, or charabanc, operated by city gas carried in a balloon container on the roof, was also at one time a common sight in England, although not as common as the ubiquitous steam lorry. These gas-operated vehicles have, however, disappeared from the streets in recent years, and probably owed their existence entirely to war conditions. In France one of the largest motor vehicle manufacturers had last year more than 30 trucks equipped with regular gasoline engines in service in the Parisian area operating on producer gas obtained from a small gas producer mounted on the running board of the truck. Both wood and charcoal have been used in these gas producers. The authors were interested enough in this unique commercial development to spend some time examining the apparatus used and inquiring into the success which it had met. The picture is by no means an impossible one purely from the standpoint of practicability, but there is no doubt of the soundness of the conclusion that this is not a development which has any present important significance. Powdered carbonaceous matter, coal, coke or lignite, has been used experimentally in special forms of internal combustion engines, but so far as is known, these have never been applied to automotive practice. A Vice-President continuously) for the last eleven years, apparently neither his picture nor a biographical sketch ever have adorned these pages and were he forewarned in the present instance he would order us to "forget it." He is a Columbia School of Mines man, Class of '98. He worked underground at Rossland, B. C. for a time, then for a year and a half a. chief engineer of the famous Camp Bird at Ouray, Colo. For three wars he was examining engineer for the Guggenheims and since 1901 has been an independent consulting engineer with experience throughout the Americas.

In September 1937, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1907 to 1919. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about I per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was disseminated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was probably less than 60 per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a complete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof comprised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig. I, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content. The tonnage within the limit of the drill holes was estimated at about five million tons with an average content of 0.42 per cent Cu, 31 per cent of which (0.13 per cent) was acid-soluble. A screen analysis of the composite dump sample is shown in Table I. Flotation tests by several companies and individuals were then made, the results of which ranged from 62 to 74 per cent recovery. On the basis of these, a 200-ton pilot plant employing straight flotation was built and operated for a few months. Operation of this plant was unsuccessful, as no provision had been made to handle the copper-bearing solutions resulting from the water-soluble copper, a point that was overlooked in the laboratory test work. Attempts to decant the copper-bearing solution for precipitation in the usual manner ahead of flotation were not satisfactory because of low water recovery (owing to poor settling characteristics of the pulp) and contamination of the copper precipitate with unsettled slime. No symposium on die-casting could be complete without consideration of the methods of formula and impurity control. No corisideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular. Composition Aluminum.-Aluminum die die castings are expected to conform to the specifications of the Amcrican Society for Testing Materialslt and the Society of Automotive Engineers2. The A.S.T.M. has recognized seven aluminum alloys in Tentative Specification B85-33-T. TWO are straight silicon and the remainder are of the copper-silicon type of which alloys VIII and IX have in addition respectively 2 and 4 per cent of nickel, but unlike the others are not covered by S.A.E. as well. THE necessity of adopting improved methods of bituminous-coal cleaning at. many collieries is recognized by all familiar with the requirements of the various bituminous markets, the approaching exhaustion of the relatively small areas of inherently high-grade-coal, and the difficulties encountered in maintaining a uniform grade of shipped coal. Many coals lose much of their .market value by degradation in size, and, in any event, if the cleaning process is to contemplate wetting the coal the minimum amount of fines should be produced to prevent sludge losses and the difficulties resulting from the moisture content of the wet fines. Hence, it is desirable to by-pass the finer coal dry, if this can be done without too-great increase in impurities in the final product. This procedure has given excellent results at washeries at Steelton and in the Birmingham district. If the raw fines are too impure to permit admixture with the washed coal, it may be desirable to use dry methods, such as the pneumatic table, rather than to wet an excessive amount of such fine material. The bituminous-coal cleaning plant should therefore: (1) Treat the raw coal in as large lump as possible and without sizing; (2) eliminate degradation of pure coal -in the washing process; (3) avoid wetting the fines, if possible; (4) produce washed coal practically free from mechanically included impurities; (5) crush the refuse and retreat, if much intergrown coal, and refuse are present, rather than precrush the entire feed. Ordinary gravimetric methods of concentration, whether hydraulic or pneumatic, will not meet all of these requirements, as the large lump includes those sizes. now sent to the picking tables, if it is desired to treat material of such size. I do not know of any prior commercial method, based on the falling velocity, coefficient of friction or resistance to fracture, that permits the production of clean coal varying in size from, say, 10-in. lump to 1/16 -in. mesh.

In the year 1875, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, acting on incorrect information concerning the production of oil and gas, established what has become the law of the land for the governing of oil production. While the decision was ideal for the refining monopoly which was completed in that year, there is no evidence that the court was in any way influenced by that refining monopoly. The evidence indicates that the court accepted the view of the royalty owner and independent oil producer. Throughout the life of the refining monopoly it accepted this law, which was so evidently to its advantage in securing cheap raw material. The same policy continued until the development of the exhaustion theory and the entry of the various units of the former monopoly into the production of crude oil. It is curious that no one doubted the new theory of shortage sufficiently to feel the need of changing the law. When the theory entered the economic field sufficiently to raise crude oil prices beyond justification it shortly disproved itself, but by this time the question of split ownership in producing fields made a change from legal error to justice too complicated to be undertaken by the large companies. Not even the ardent advocate of unit operation dared to carry the question to the United States Supreme Court, which has never been asked to pass on the complete question. The impossible position of the producing industry, hemmed in on one side by court law compelling wasteful production and on the other by the national law against cooperation, lasted until the demoralization of 1927 led to cooperation within a state and under state guidance. Since that time control of production has grown with the bringing in of each new field and at this time has the active support of the Department of the Interior in such ways as are definitely legal. As in 1875, the royalty owner and independent producer are opposing by all possible means the rational conduct of the business of producing crude oil. HOPPERS may be divided into three classes accord-ing ing to type, namely; round, suspension, and square or rectangular. The round hopper is the most simple of the three and is the most easily understood by laymen. The bursting pressure in these hoppers is resisted by the shell as a round tank resists the pressure of water. They are perfectly stable as long as they retain their cylindrical shape. In holding water or other liquids the pressure on the sides is always the same, but with ore this is seldom true. These round hoppers for ore are usually filled from one side and frequently drawn off from the opposite side. A considerable amount of fine material is deposited on the side of filling, while the coarse particles run over to the far side. This con-dition of filling causes the ore to flow out unevenly, sometimes drawing out completely on one side. After a time the remaining ore breaks down and the shock of this falling ore, sometimes many tons, is very severe and has a tendency to distort the hopper from its true shape; consequently a round hopper holding ore should be stiffened to resist such shocks as this. For these reasons round hoppers have never been popular with engineers for holding ore. They also have a trait of welling. up worse than the square hoppers. I have known of round hoppers holding fine ore, 25 ft. diam-eter, that had a tendency to well up until there was ,only a round hole about 6 ft. diameter leading to the gate. The suspension or catenary type of hopper is well adapted to conditions requiring only small capacities. The selection of this type of hopper should be done with considerable care. The theory of the design is that the loads are carried entirely in tension in the bottom plate, just as a hammock carries a load, and it must be remembered that the bottoms of these hoppers are con-stantly changing form with the changing loads. Take a hammock, for example, if a person stands up in it, the bottom goes down and the sides approach a straight line; if the person lies down then the bottom comes up and the sides go down. It is this constant changing of the form that has a tendency to break the connections.
