The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Membebs of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can he of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, maps privately issued, and. similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will he welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The lease-system is the gradual result of the development of our larger producing mines throughout the State of Colorado. The operation of a mine, or group of mines, by corporations has been attended, in many cases, by disaster, owing to the difficulty of securing a fair day's work from the men employed in the mine, and the loss entailed by careless mining and sorting of high-grade ores, or by lax or inefficient management on the part of superintendents and foremen. Given, therefore, a mine that has been practically abandoned by its owner, for the reasons given, but still possessing merit, the lessee appears on the ground and secures a lease for a year, or term of years, from the owner, upon the payment of a royalty upon the gross smelter- or mill-returns of the ore which he mines. In this way many of our abandoned mines have been re-opened by the miner, who, with two or more associates, has been enabled, by careful attention, to obtain profitable results.

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems, after a slow start in the early sixties, is gaining increasing acceptance for planning, design, and evaluation purposes. Numerous programs are readily available from government, university, consulting, and industry sources. The computer adage "garbage in, garbage out" is as applicable in ventilation engineering as in any other application of computers, and has been responsible for the questionable results obtained in some instances. The source of input data for a ventilation simulation is most often a pressure-quantity survey of the mine, or, in the case of a new mine, information derived from a survey of an existing mine which has conditions similar to those expected in the new mine. The crucial step is to generate simulation input data from the ventilation survey. Problems such as quantities that do not balance, pressure gradients opposite to measured air flow, differences in the pressure datum in a multi-shaft mine, modeling of leakage, and deviations in flow from the square law (H=RQ2) are frequently encountered and must be resolved. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these aspects and to propose procedures which can lead to input data for valid simulations of mine ventilation systems.

R. C. Shnay (Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, Ont., Canada)-—The authors are to be congratulated on an interesting and informative paper. However, several questions arise when the isothermal formation of martensite .is considered in relation to the formation of bainite at temperatures near the M, point. The reactions in an alloy and in a plain carbon steel would appear to be comparable; and in the course of a recent investigation of the austenite-bainite transformation in a plain carbon steel,Ia the writer has obtained data at temperatures above and below the M, point. These data are in some respects similar to those of the authors and a comparison would seem justified. The steel used in this investigation had the nominal composition: C, 0.80 pct; Mn, 0.20; and Si, 0.20. The course of the transformation was followed by the use of a magnetic balance. The magnetic moment of the specimen as determined by this instrument is directly proportional to the percentage of the total volume of the specimen which has transformed to bainite. ~lf specimens were austenitized at 1850°F for 4 hr, quenched to the transformation temperature, and quickly transferred to the magnetic balance. Readings were taken at regular intervals until the transformation had stopped. A typical transformation curve is shown in Fig. 9. The preliminary curve preceding the S-shaped curve was found at all temperatures above the M, to around 600°F. Both the extent of this preliminary curve and the time interval between it and the S-shaped curve were found to decrease with increasing temperature as was suggested by Davenport and Bain.14 Therefore,

ARTHUR CROWFOOT, Morenci, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).-In order to set at rest any doubts in regard to the reasons for selecting the Callow pneumatic flotation process for use in the concentrators of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., at Clifton and Morenci, I am presenting the following facts gained from the results of test work carried out on the Callow and Cole-Bergman types of flotation machines at Morenci. Prior to the comparative test of merit between the Callow and Cole-Bergman machines, many months' time and a large amount of money had been expended in the development and testing of the Cole-Bergman machine, and it was necessary to decide quickly what make of machine was best to install. The Callow pneumatic flotation process was recommended for installation in our concentrators for the following reasons: The results indicated: 1. That the Callow system made the highest extraction of copper values from the feed treated. 2. That the Callow system was simpler to operate and could he operated it a lower cost. 3. That the Callow system operated with a lower air pressure. (The question of the actual power consumption of the two types of machines was not definitely settled at this time.) During the official test period the Callow flotation apparatus showed an additional recovery of from 1 to 1.5 lb. of copper per ton more than the Cole-Bergman machine, this difference being maintained by further treatment of the tailing from both machines. The simplicity of the operation of the Callow flotation system is one of its notable features, two operators per shift being able to handle 90 standard cells and blower equipment.

WHAT was certainly the greatest event of January, and perhaps it will prove to be the greatest of 1923, or even of the next decade, was the meeting of the premiers of the principal Euro-pean powers in Paris on Jan. 2, to consider what should be done with respect to German reparations. The French and British were unable to come to any agree-ment, and the conference broke up on Jan. 4. The French and British parted friends, but each with the determination henceforth to pursue its own economic and political way. This event was profound in its significance and perhaps will be calamitous) in its consequences. Following the disruption of the Conference at Paris, the French immediately began preparations to occupy the Ruhr district on the ground that Germany was in default on coal deliveries, without waiting. for Jan. 15, the next due date for reparation payment. This action by the French led to orders being issued by President Harding on Jan. 10 for the withdrawal of the remainder of the American troops on the Rhine. Thus ended the physical participation in. European affairs by the American army, whose vanguard landed in France in June, 1917. The French occupation of the Ruhr Valley, i.e., the great industrial region of western Westphalia, was made with a large military force. The Germans offered no physical resistance, and passed under French control with sullen resentment. The coal miners to a con-siderable extent refused to work and there was more or less disorganization of railway service. Before the end of the month the opinion was expressed that the French occupation was an economic failure and there were reports of French blast furnaces being blown out for lack of coke.

In a Bolivian tin concentrator an appliance was needed to furnish a suitable product for fine jigging from a pulp of the following composition: Mesh Per Cent. + 20 8.0 40 36.5 + 60 9.0 + 80 10.5 + loo 5.5 4-150 1 4.5 -150 25.0 99.0 Loss 1.0 In the jigging process, particles of cassiterite as small as 0.1 mm. can be recovered, provided they are not present in excess, that is if the material treated on the jigs contains sufficient coarser sands to keep the interstices between the grains open. Removing the fine material from the pulp by screening, to prepare the jig feed, is impractical, because that means the use of an 80-mesh screen or finer, and is not as effective as hydraulic classification. A screen would eliminate mineral grains from the feed which can be recovered by jigging, and in addition would throw more gangue and low-grade middling on to the jig. Formerly a one-spigot Richards vortex classifier had been used to accomplish this separation, but the tangential openings through which the hydraulic water enters became clogged by fine vegetal matter with which the water was contaminated, and which it was impossible to remove from the water. Consequently the work of the classifier was imperfect and a good deal of slime was sent to the jig. When designing the plant referred to in this paper it was decided to use a hydraulic classifier as shown in Fig. 1. The essential features had been copied from the Anaconda classifier.' IN evaluating coals as steaming fuel on the basis of chemical and physical properties of the coals, the only properties that can be used are those for which the methods of determination are well established and standardized, and those that affect all methods of burning the coals in the same way. The discussion is written from the standpoint of the coal consumer. The production of steam is the largest field for the use of coal. It includes stations for generating electric power, central heating plants, industrial power plants where steam is used for power generation, factory processes and heating. The field also includes steam locomotives. Small house-heating boilers are not included in this field because such small boilers generally burn specially prepared domestic fuel. The plants using the steam coal are equipped to burn the coal when fired by one of the three general methods: namely, hand, stoker, and pulverized coal. The hand firing is now restricted to small plants and to locomotives. Central stations and larger industrial plants use either stoker or pulverized-coal firing. Some locomotives also use stokers. Pulverized-coal firing has been tried in locomotives but so far its adapta-tion to this use has been handicapped by practical difficulties. The coals used for steaming purposes are generally of the bituminous and semibituminous classes, with volatile matter ranging from 15 to 35 per cent. Coals belonging to these classes are produced in many parts of the United States and form by far the largest part of the total coal production of the country. AT THE beginning of May the German government offered to the French and Belgians the payment of 30 billion .gold marks as indemnity, accom-panied by rather involved terms, among which was the ability of the Germans to finance the foreign loan. This offer was promptly and summarily refused by the French and Belgians. Since then there have been more palavers between the two parties, while the occupation of the Ruhr continued without especial incident, except some socialist riots and workmen's strikes. The renewed conference between the Allies and the Turks at Lausanne continued, without apparently getting anywhere. The Turks demanded an indemnity from the Greeks, which the latter refused to pay, threatening a resumption of hostilities rather than to do so. A. Bonar Law, the British premier, resigned his office soon after the middle of May, owing to poor health. The King appointed Stanley Baldwin as his successor. This. Attainment to the premiership of Great Britain by a business man is a noteworthy event. It is, moreover, to be remarked that Mr. Baldwin is personally acquainted with America and is well known to be a friend to Americans. The Irish rebellion came to an end. Economically there was some improvement in the situation in Great Britain during May, which was reflected in diminution in the number of unemployed. Nevertheless the aggregate of the unemployed in Great Britain continues at a very high figure. In Germany there has been an increase in the number of unemployed ever since the French occupation of the Ruhr, which naturally has been choking German industry. Previous to this the percentage of unemploy-ment among German workers had been low ever since the Armistice. A noteworthy domestic event was the non-stop flight of an airplane, May 2-3, bearing two aviators from New York to San Diego, California, in about 27 hours.

SHUTTING-IN the Rangely gas well was an interesting problem because of the high rock pressure and the volume of gas developed, as well as the difficulties encountered. After nearly a week's open flow, the rock pressure was 1275 lb., which corresponds with a 2950 ft. hydrostatic head. The volume of gas was between 45,000,000 and 50,000,000 cu. ft. per day. The Rangeley oil field, which now has a daily production of 100 bbl. of shale oil from shallow depth, lies approximately 100 miles north and 30 miles west of Grand Junction, Colo.; not far from the Utah line. The, well we are considering was drilled on the apex of a large clearly defined. Structure1 in the SE.1/4 sec. 30, T. 2 S., R. 102 W., and entered the gas sand at 2954 ft. on March 2, 1925. The condition of the well at the time the gas was encountered was as follows: 20 ft. of 20-in. conductor cemented with ten sacks at 40 ft. The 15 1/2-in. casing was pulled when the 12 1/2-in. was cemented. 1166 ft. of 12 1/2-in. casing, cemented with fifteen sacks. 2531 ft. of 10-in, casing, cemented with ten sacks; neither the 12 1/2-in. nor the 10-in, casing shut off water but they were cemented for protection. 2938 ft. of 8 1/4-in. 36-lb. casing, hanging on a spider in the collar with a forged-steel, high-pressure bradenhead between it and the 10-in. casing. An 8 1/4-in. drilling, or master, gate and a control head were in place on the 8 1/4-in. casing, and all was in readiness for the bringing in of the well.

As permissible explosives and electric detonators are now generally recognized as the only safe means of blasting in coal mines, this paper is limited to their use. Causes of Misfires There are many different causes of misfires, but the principal ones are as follows: 1. Explosives which have deteriorated through improper storage either at the storage magazine, the distributing magazine, or at the working face. This is not only true of the explosive itself, but also of its detonating agent. 2. Improper priming and charging at the working face. This commonly occurs when the explosives are handled by inexperienced persons. 3. Improper methods of tamping; the leg wires of the detonator may be abraded or broken by the tamping bar or stick, thereby causing a short or broken circuit. 4. Faulty leading wire, or electrical apparatus of insufficient strength to explode the detonator. Prevention of Misfires Storage is an important factor, especially with permissibles of a nitrate or ammonia base. Both explosives and detonators should be stored in substantially built, fire-resisting magazines and should be situated so that the minimum amount of moisture and heat is present. They should be so constructed that a constant supply of fresh air enters; the floor of the magazine should be raised to permit the circulation of air under the stored explosives. Boxes should be stored top side up and in such a manner that the old explosives are used before those of a later delivery. This eliminates chance of deterioration from lengthy storage. Detonators should be similarly handled and stored. The distributing magazine stock should be regulated so that not more than one day's supply is on hand.

For a number of years I have, at odd times, tried to perfect a method of assay sufficiently delicate to find and estimate minute quantities of gold and silver. The object in view was to examine rocks remote from veins or mineral areas, in order to test the probability of the lateral-secretion theory. Having succeeded in measuring approximately the amount of gold and silver contained in one cubic centimeter of sea-water, I present a detailed account of the method employed, with some of the results obtained. General Method of Assay. The use of purified lead without other flux, blowpipe methods, extraction by cyanide, and measurement of the beads by the microscope. Purged Lead. The method of testing is by cupellation. On a properly prepared cupel, it is easy to cupel and find a bead of 0.002 mm. diameter. Such a bead of silver weighs about 1 part of a milligramme. A bead 0.02 mm. in diameter weighs about 1/24,000 mg., and a close approximation can be made to its weight. It is desirable that the lead used in the assay should be low in silver so as to avoid large correction, but as the parted

DESPITE the very small number of engineers who can get away from their tasks to New York, a point so far from the Mid-Continent and Cali-fornia oil fields, where the real important, engineering progress in the industry is being made, the attendance was remarkably good, and it was generally remarked that all the sessions were "snappy," and there was no drag. This was largely because, under instructions from the chairman, very few papers were permitted to be read, and the "high lights" of each paper were pre-sented orally as an introduction to the large and varied discussions, many of which were prepared in advance. The round table discussion on petroleum engineering research problems, conducted by W. E. Wrather, proved a greater success than was anticipated, considering the difficulty in getting many of the men to discuss such problems. There has been no crystallization of opinion heretofore of what are important engineering research problems, as distinguished from pure science problems, and a digest of the discussion will be made available so as to present the results obtained. It is hoped that further round table discussions, as well as committee work, in the meantime summarizing problems appear-ing in papers published the last two to three years, will enable the oil industry to determine intelligently which of the problems are most important for immediate attack. The roundtable discussion on petroleum engineering educational problems, conducted by H. C. George of the University of Oklahoma, was equally fruitful, and since managers of companies, consulting engineers, and pro-fessors cooperated in these sessions, a cross-section of their opinions on improving the curricula for training the large number of petroleum engineers, which the industry can absorb in-the next few years, was obtained.

The old adage, " Necessity is the mother of invention," is fully borne out in the case of the device described in this paper. About four years ago the firm of the writer received instructions from Sir John Hawkshaw, C. E., and I. Wolf Barry, Esq., C. E., to construct and erect three large Guibal fans for ventilating a portion of the Metropolitan and District Underground Railway, of London. On account of the cost of coal and the very limited space for boilers, it was arranged that the fans should be driven by gas-engines. Those who have had experience with Guibal fans will be aware that as each blade or vane passes the lower edge of the shutter a pulsatory action takes place. When the fans above mentioned were set to work, the pulsation or vibration of the immense volumes of air discharged was so great that it caused a corresponding vibration of the window-sashes, doors, etc., of the surrounding buildings; and this was so unpleasant that the shopkeepers and others near obtained an injunction against the railroad company, compelling it to stop one of the fans. The work was by this time out of our hands, and we only casually heard what had taken place, learning also that, in addition to this injunction, another was threatened in the case of the second fan, and that the railroad company had thus far escaped the enforcement of this threat by agreeing to run the second fan at a few short stated intervals only during each day. In considering the case, it occurred to us to incline the lower edge of the shutter, instead of making it parallel with the axis of the fan,. by which means we thought that the waves of air might be broken

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

INTRODUCTION Characterization of a site for the prediction and simulation of dynamic events requires the determination of mechanical properties of the rock at stress/strain levels and rates and at a scale appropriate for the events and critical structures involved. The structures of interest can be on the surface, underground, or designed to impact and penetrate into the site (projectiles). Dynamic events of interest are equally diverse: seismic waves from distance earthquakes or explosions; close-in phenomena associated with earthquakes and explosions; vibrations associated with heavy equipment or machinery; and stress transients associated with impact and penetration. The complexity of site characterization depends on two factors not specifically related to the nature of the site itself: the stress levels generated by the dynamic event and the sophistication of the prediction and simulation techniques. For very high stress levels, such as occur near a nuclear detonation, and for low stress levels, such as occur during seismic wave propagation, site characterization is simplified, and often certain details of the site are not particularly important, such as shear strength variations in the case of very high stress levels. In the intermediate stress range, however, all descriptive relations are non- linear, a complete finite strain constitutive model is required, and all details of the site, such as lithology and fracture distribution, become important. The site characterization must be complete enough to support the most sophisticated prediction and simulation technique that will be applied to the analysis of the dynamic event. The procedures of site characterization are illustrated in this paper by a specific dynamic event, projectile impact and penetration, and a specific site, an outcrop of Dakota Sandstone near San Ysidro, New Mexico. PRACTICALLY all explosives may be classified as those that burn and those that detonate. Explosives of the first class include .black blasting and smokeless powder and are broadly known as low explosives, or propellants, because they merely burn and do that comparatively slowly. Their action is as if some power behind the projectile or other material were exerting a shoving or pushing action. The high, or detonating, explosives produce a smashing or shattering effect upon the material. In using military- explosives of the propellant class, the breach of the gun, or cannon, is proportioned to hold the pressure, so that the projectile will be blown out. Exactly the reverse is true in commercial work; then it is the "breach" or the hole that is to be broken. The projectile and the explosive are therefore chosen that will rupture the largest "breach" possible. With the high explosives, it is easy to break out the breach (that is why they are of no value as military propellants)" but with some of the low explosives it is necessary to plug up the muzzle very carefully before shooting. Doubtless the use of incendiary mixtures of oxidizing and combustible materials led, in the 13th century, to the perfection of the mixture which is practically the same as our commercial black blasting powder of today. About 600 years later, nitroglycerine was discovered, but for years its great potential energy could not be used because, in its liquid state, it could not be safely handled or transported. The accidental discovery that kieselguhr would absorb, and hold fairly well, three times its own weight of nitroglycerine, however, made it available. "Guhr dynamite," as the combination nitroglycerine and kieselguhr was termed, was soon displaced by dynamites having an active base, such as wood pulp and other carbonaceous combustible materials. These do all that kieselguhr will do and, in addition, increase the chemical reaction and add materially to the effectiveness of the blast.

IN attacking the problems of mining and treating large disseminated copper orebodies such as those occurring in the Miami or the Ray district of Arizona, one of the vital questions to be decided is, "What is the value of the orebody per ton in place?", The importance of this question lies in the fact that its answer helps to reach a decision concerning the method of mining to be employed. Let it be assumed for the moment that milling and smelting practice, especially the latter, is more or less standardized; and has a cost incapable of much variation, while the cost of mining has a considerable range owing to the large number of mining methods by which a mine may be exploited. For instance, a method may be adopted whereby all the available ore can be extracted perfectly clean (i.e., unmixed with barren material) at a relatively high cost; or a method may be used involving the necessary dilution of a portion of the ore with waste, in order to recover that portion, thus giving a relatively poorer extraction but nevertheless a lower working cost than the former method. Naturally, between these two extremes there lie intermediate methods. In order to arrive at a solution of a mining method problem that is of any value, it is necessary that accurate and complete estimates of mining, milling, and smelting performances and costs shall be established. By way of illustration is given a, case of mining, by the system of undercutting and caving, a large orebody with an average content of 1.50 per cent. copper supposedly all in sulphide form, to which case has been applied those results in mining operations which one may fairly assume are to be expected when viewed in the light of G. R. Lehman's ore-drawing experiments, which form the subject of a paper to be presented at this meeting. It is assumed that the total. costs will be as shown in the following table:

Inasmuch as] the mining of phosphate rock and its transportation has so general a bearing on the great industries of this continent, entering as well into the problem of our trade with foreign countries, it may be useful to place on record the following list of localities from which certain products of a like nature are received by us in a business way, or in which we are interested more or less either by ownership or by competition. As a ready means of comparison, the percentages of the mine products and the deteriorating constituents are given : Coprolite (Cambridge).—This material is obtained from the Upper Greensand formation in Cambridgeshire. The phosphate runs from 50 to 60 per cent., and averages 64 per cent. It contains much carbonate of calcium, but little iron, in the ferric condition. The superphosphates manufactured from the material are permanent and little liable to a revert." They contain from 28 to 35 per cent. of soluble phosphate. Coprolite (Buckingham).—From the same formation as the Cambridge variety, and very similar in composition.. It averages 60 per cent. phosphate. Coprolite (Suffolk).—These coprolites are not so valuable for the manufacture of superphosphate as the two previous varieties, as the iron they contain is in the ferric state, and liable to "revert" the soluble phosphate. The phosphate varies from 48 to 60 per cent., but averages 54 per cent. They are of Tertiary formation. Coprolite (Potton or Bedford).—The average amount of phosphate in these coprolites is about 50 per cent. In some cases they may, however, run up to 60 per cent., and in others may not exceed 45 per cent. They belong to the Lower Greensand formation. The ferric iron frequently is as high as 4 per cent., and the alumina as much. Russian phosphate comes from the chalk, and occurs in carious rounded masses. It contains from 28 to 35 per cent. of phosphate, but may run up to 69 or 70 per cent. Curacoa phosphate is also of very high class quality, giving 80

G. M. TAYLOR,* Colorado Springs, Colo.-The ore treated at the United Eastern is primarily a gold one and is cyanided-the counter-current decantation method being employed. One of our employees visited this plant a few months ago and, on his return, reported that the moisture in the tailing was carrying 20 c. per ton, which would appear to be somewhat high. As this type of plant has been advocated by one of the recognized cyaniding engineering firms in the country, and a number of these plants are in successful operation, it does not seem to me that the dissolved loss could be so high, and I would like to know if any one can give any definite information on this point? J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I am very glad that Mr. Taylor has raised this question. When I first read Mr. North's paper and saw his statement, that they had an actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. per ton, I was very much puzzled at this high loss which appeared avoidable by another decantation or the addition of a rotary filter. Reading it again, however, I noted that the actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. given was evi-dently obtained by multiplying the assay of solution discharged from Z. thickener by the tonnage. On the basis of 283 tons milled per clay, this means $56.54 going to the clam. He states, however, that he returns from. the dam into the system, 70 tons daily assaying 40 c. per ton or $28 per day, so it would seem reasonable, unless I have overlooked something to regard the actual dissolved loss as $56.54 less $28 or $28.54, equaling 10.8 c. per ton. Even this loss, however, is much higher than good practice elsewhere, and can be accounted for largely by the tonnage being handled, which I believe is 30 per cent. above the capacity planned.
