TO obtain the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4 m.) of hole drilled. Grease guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium (No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wick-ing, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia, may be used. Drills used in shaft sinking can be oiled satisfactorily by placing a good-sized, drop, sight lubricator on the station above the sinking operations and connecting it with the air-line supplying the sinking drills. If this lubricator is properly filled and adjusted, a uniform oiling of the sinking machines will be effected without the necessity of oiling the drills individually. The grease end should be filled at the station or surface before each drilling period. The shift boss should see that the machines are greased and also that the lubricators at the station function properly. The life of the air-drill hose is somewhat shortened by this method, as oil attacks the inner tube; but as some oil is always present in the compressed air, this is not a serious objection to the method.

That the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First, each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal, in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. One part is infusible at the existing temperature, and hence solidifies, and in general attaches itself to the inclosing walls of metal which have already solidified; A, Fig. 1. The other part is fusible at the existing temperature and hence remains molten. In the case of carbon steel, the part of each drop which actually solidifies is poorer in carbon than the drop itself was before it began to solidify, and this impoverishment of the solidifying half-drop enriches the other half-drop in carbon, and thus makes it unfreezable at the existing tern- By this mechanism there arises during solidification a "littoral" or shore layer of liquid B, Fig. 1, bathing the already solidified walls, and more fusible than either those walls or the great remaining central mass of liquid or " deep sea " C, from which it separates them. It is essential that we grasp clearly this conception of a fusible littoral molten layer coating the already solidified walls and separating them from the deep sea. Meanwhile heat is flowing rapidly outward through these walls, its escape cooling them, so that if any given particle of the deep sea metal could get past this littoral layer and come into contact with the solid walls, it would in turn solidify, and like its predecessors would split up in solidifying into a less fusible half-drop which would attach itself to those . walls and a more fusible one which would remain molten. During the past decade, methods of producing bituminous coal in the state of Illinois, which ranks third in production among the states in which bituminous coal is mined, have undergone great changes. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of production by various methods in the state of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties. SHIFT in Production The term "mechanization" is commonly used to designate the coal-loading operation. However, in a broader sense it embraces the use of any and all mechanical and electrical equipment on the surface and underground. Strip mining is an intensive form of mechanization. In 1939 the production of crude oil in New York totaled 5,105,000 bbl. This marks the third consecutive year production of crude oil has exceeded 5,000,000 bbl. and only once has this total been surpassed—in the year 1882, three years after the discovery of oil in Allegany County, when the annual production was more than 6,000,000 barrels. The most gratifying feature of the industry was the increased demand for lubricants, which resulted in advanced prices for crude. From a price at the beginning of the year of $1.68 per barrel, six advances totaling 82c brought the year's closing to $2.50 per barrel. A further increase in price on Jan. 1, 1940, to $2.75 per barrel places the local industry in a strong position for the year's operations. Most of the oil production of the state is now obtained by water-flooding, and the industry is practically stabilized. No new pools have been discovered in over 25 years, and border drilling indicates little prospect of extending the boundaries of the fields beyond their present limits. Deep drilling to the Oriskany sandstone in and close to the present oil fields hay failed to find oil in substantial amounts. Altogether, the oil pools of New York have produced during the 60 years that they have been exploited approximately 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. Following the flush production of 1882, the annual production gradually dccrcased and the year 1912 marked an all-time low of only 782,000 bbl. In 1919, as a result of flooding operations, a definite upward trend in oil production was recorded. During that year also the production of oil by water-flooding methods as approved by Legislative action. In the 21-yr. period beginning with 1919, oil production in the state ha.: totaled 60,338,000 bbl. Thus it will be seen that by the aid of flooding methods nearly as much oil has been produced in the last 21 yr. as in the preceding 40 yr., although the Iatter period included the flush production in 1882. As there is little hope of extending the area of the present producing oil fields of the state, producers and refiners are concerned regarding the future life of the fields. OIL quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State `A'-Vapor Blanket Cooling-In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage `B'-Vapor Transport Cooling- Termination of the `A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage `C'-Liquid Cooling--The `B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the `B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage `B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 2 ½ -in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and 1-in. stream height, and (2) a ½ -in. orifice and a 3 ½ -in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was ½ -in. above the orifice. The steel used was an NE 9450 having the following analysis: [ ] Some tests were run on an NE 8740, 3312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been omitted' from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1 1/8 -in. stock to 1-in. diam by 4 in. long.

The Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailcd results of tests on four typical samples. Mineralogy of Batjxite The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2HzO). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (AlzOa.3H20), diaspore (A120a.H20), and boehmite (Alr-03.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2Hz0). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. History of Batjxite Beneficiatjon The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaneyl and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. Their work has also developed reagent combinations that are satisfactory for flotation of gibbsite.

THE Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. ORIGINAL FLOTATION EQUIPMENT AND ORE The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.p.m. The impellers were the 45° type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling 90 per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent marmatite, 1 per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between 15 and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FLOTATION AT SULLIVAN Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The practice is still employed.

Metallurgists have, in the last ten years, overcome many difficulties of high zinc in lead blast-furnace slags. This problem was brought to the front at the close of the war, by the price obtained for lead and the high cost of labor, fuel, and flux. The Port Pirie plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Australia, early in 1919 had increased the zinc oxide in its blast-furnace slags from 13.5 to 20 per cent., at the same time reducing the iron oxide in the slag from 33.5 to 25.6 per cent. These results were obtained by the addition of 10 to 12 per cent. granulated slag to the roaster charge, improved conditions of the crushing, mixing, and roasting of the constituents of the sinter. By experiments and improvements, the practice at this plant has developed a normal slag that carries 22 per cent. zinc oxide, and at times runs as high as 33 per cent. zinc oxide, with only slight furnace trouble. The granulated slag is used not only as a diluent to the sulfur in the roaster charge, but on account of its value as a slag-forming material and the physical properties it imparts to the finished sinter. The ore is mixed with flux and given a double roast. All the first roasting is by sintering with the Dwight & Lloyd machines. The final roasting is performed partly by Dwight & Lloyd machines and partly by H. & H. pots. The charge to the blast furnace consists chiefly of the final sinter, slag shells, siliceous and non-bearing sulfur lead ores. High blast and ore columns are the practice. The greatest care is taken to obtain in the final sinter as low a sulfur content as possible. Attracted by the success of the Port Pirie plant, The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, at Trail, B. C., in 1920 treated its crushed primary sinter with about 15 per cent. granulated slag. The Trail smelter at this time was short of ore and a large part of the charge to the roasters consisted of the zinc-plant residue having the following analysis: 12 to 16 per cent. lead, 12 to 16 per cent. zinc, and 25 to 30 per cent. iron. The lead in the final sinter was low and the physical condition was so bad that all the sinter had to be screened before it could be charged to the blast furnace. ARTHUR KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬On p. 2275 I find a quotation from Mr. Thompson regarding the fountains of the Baku field. I have seen a large number of these gushers or fountains. In every case where unusual amounts of sand were produced the wells caved in and shut off in a few clays and were an absolute loss Very often the formation had caved so far up as to allow the water to enter the oil strata, and not only was the well lost but the ground for many acres around the well was useless for drilling purposes because the disturbed ground had allowed the gas and oil to dissipate and the water to enter. On p. 2268, Mr. Thompson is again quoted regarding the Balakhany field. If the text is consulted further, it will be found that the oil at Balakhany is heavy only in contradistinction to the Bibi Eibat, field. The gravity of the oil at Balakhany is from 28 to 32. Also, it must be noted that the illustration is taken from the conditions in the older part of the field. This field was first chilled 40 years ago, and was a worn-out field 15 years ago. The wells which produce sand are wells in which the casings are practically gone and the formations are full of water. The sand must be bailed from these wells because the clays from the upper stratum have caved into the wells and are obstructing the passage of oil. On p. 2262 is the statement that the Russian wells cannot be pumped on account of the large amounts of free sand produced. They have never tried pumping in the Baku field to any extent. Wherever tried, it has proven a great success. If we take the author's theories as correct and wish to put them into practice, it would first be necessary to consider a few figures. Let us assume that we produce oil and sand together in the proportion in which they exist in the productive strata. It is not uncommon to have wells in the California field which are not gushers, but which, by pumping, produce 1,000 bbl. per clay the first 100 clays.

The experiments detailed by Dr. Hunt,* having demonstrated the fact that the copper contained in the "clay ore" of Jones's Mine, was rendered completely soluble in the bath of ferrous chloride, used in the Hunt and Douglas process, after heating in contact with carbonaceous matter in a close vessel, I set myself to devise a form of muffle furnace adapted to the treatment of large quantities of these and similar ores by a continuous process. The result is shown in the diagrams on Plate X, reduced from the working drawings, after which this furnace was built early in 1876, at Phœnixville, by the Chemical Copper Company on their works at this place. The peculiar character of this ore determined the form, dimensions, and position, with reference to charging and discharging of these muffles. The ore arrived from the mine with from 20 to 25 per cent. of moisture, and when dried at 21o F., or more slowly at lower temperature, it falls to a light incoherent powder, with occasional lumps of undecomposed rock. In this condition it is readily mingled with coal-dust or any like reducing agent, and requires no other preparation for the muffle than the use of the shovel, to mix it well with the reducing agent. As it is a remarkably good non-conductor of heat, it was obvious that the mass, to be heated through in a reasonable time, must not be too thick, while the weight of the mass must be sustained in a way to avoid undue strain upon the walls of the muffle. These walls must be as thin as practicable, to favor the more rapid transmission of heat, and must, therefore, be so constructed as to admit of being stayed on the sides at frequent intervals to resist the lateral thrust of the very mobile mass of pulverulent ore, which, for obvious reasons, must be charged at the top and drawn from the bottom of each chamber. These considerations led to the form adopted, viz., two vertical muffles, standing upon very strong bridge tiles, seen in longitudinal section, on the line E, F, and in plan in Fig. 3, on the same plane. THE occurrence of this gas, in quite appreciable. quantities, has been observed for many years in its escape along the creeks of Western Pennsylvania, and more recently, in much larger quantities, from the oil wells in and near Venango County. Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. During the last year a systematic attempt has been made to utilize the flow of gas from one of these wells, and results have been reached which were quite unexpected. This well, near Leechburg, Armstrong County, is about twenty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on one of the side tributaries of the Alleghany River. It had been drilled in search of oil to a depth of 1250 feet in 1871, but none was found. A great flow of gas was developed, however, accompanied by a slight spray of salt water, and this has continued with little or no diminution to the present time. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 lbs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 lbs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the fire-bridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. The gas is admitted through a half-inch pipe, and blows toward the fire-bridge through 18 or 20 one-eighth inch jets. The air is blown in at about 2 lbs. a

Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 Ibs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 Ibs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the firebridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. The gas is admitted through a half-inch pipe, and blows toward the fire-bridge through 18 or 20 one-eighth inch jets. The air is blown in at about 2 lbs.

DURING an investigation into the effect of heat-treatment on the creep properties of the magnesium alloy ZW1, (1 pct Zn, 0.6 pct Zr), the previously published methods of final polishing were found to be unsatisfactory. A new diamond-polishing technique has been developed to facilitate the study of fine precipitates in this and other magnesium alloys, and is described in this note. The sectioning and coarse grinding techniques are those of Fox and Hall,' and Hess and Cieorge.' Pre- liminary mechanical polishing is done with 6-µ, and 1-µ( grades of diamond compound on 'Microcloth' using a lubricant of 'Hyprez' oil. When the conventional technique is used with a 1/4- µ diamond wheel for the final polishing of magnesium alloys, scratching is likely to result from the abrasive action of the 'Microcloth' nap on the soft metal surface. This problem has been overcome by the use of a cream on the wheel in order to separate the specimen surface from the polishing cloth. To prepare this cream, a solution of 6-ml tri-ethanolamine in 75-ml water is stirred into 12.5 g stearic acid at a constant temperature of 80o to 90°C. The cream is allowed to cool, and is then 'whipped' to a smooth consistency with 100-ml 'Hyprez' oil. Before polishing, the diamond loaded 'Microcloth' is moistened with a few drops of 'Hyprez' oil, then a small amount of cream is worked into the nap. For the best results a wheel speed of 500 rpm should be used for polishing, and the specimen should be held by hand with a light pressure while being rotated in the opposite direction to the wheel. After polishing it is necessary to swab the specimen thoroughly in methylated spirits to remove residual cream and oil from the surface in order to avoid uneven etching and drying stains. Fig. 1 shows the surface finish obtained on a specimen by polishing on a 1/4- µ diamond wheel using the cream, and Figs. 2 and 3 the precipitate observed in ZW1 after polishing, and etching for two seconds in nitric acid 15 pct in ethylene glycol. This new diamond-polishing technique has made a valuable contribution to the programme of metal-lographic research on ZW1 and has become a routine laboratory practice for other low alloy content magnesium alloys.

The importance of the conservation of the waste heat contained in copper reverberatory furnace gases was realized very early by those in charge of operation at Anaconda. The first attempt to utilize it was in preheating the air used for combustion of the coal. This was done by forcing the air through ducts surrounding the flue-gas downtake and continued down beneath the furnace hearth to the firebox. Any small advantage gained by the heat transferred from the flue gases was more than offset by the losses sustained in cooling the hearth, therefore this process, after several trials, was soon discarded. It was first used at the Old Works as early as 1893 and again for a comparatively short time on the original furnaces at the Washoe smelter, or present works. Water-tube boilers came into general use very rapidly after 1890. Their adaptability for waste-heat steam generation, as well as the saving to be effected by the production of cheap steam from this source, was soon recognized. The first waste-heat boiler to be used in connection with a matte furnace at Anaconda was installed in September, 1900, at the "Old Lower Works." It consisted of a 100-hp. "Cook," vertical water-tube boiler. This boiler had 65 small perpendicular tubes arranged in concentric circles around a 10-in. tube in the center. These tubes were expanded into 4 ft. 4 in. inside diameter cylindrical steel top and bottom drums which served as the steam and mud drums respectively. This boiler was set in a cylindrical brick housing into which the furnace gases entered just above the mud drum and thence circulated upward around the tubes and steam drum to the stack. This installation proved unsatisfactory, presumably on account of difficulty with dust, and was soon abandoned. However, the possibilities for steam generation were undoubtedly encouraging for shortly afterwards (December, 1900) a 300-hp. Stirling boiler was installed, to be followed by two more in the spring of 1901. The choice of the Stirling type of boiler for application to copper reverberatory furnaces was particularly fortunate, as the arrangement of the tubes appears to combine to a great extent the maximum contact of the gases with the heating surfaces of the boiler and at the same time

INTRODUCTION Porphyry copper deposits have been reported from the Caribbean area by Pease (1966), Cox, et al. (1973), Guild (1974), Kesler, et al. (1975), and others. This chapter summarizes the most widely known characteristics of those deposits. Only one deposit that conceivably can be classed as a porphyry copper occurrence is in production (Pueblo Viejo, Dominican Republic), but others are known whose tonnage and grade are of economic interest. Deposits in this province may be classified as copper-gold or copper-molybdenum types (Kesler, 1972), but deposits associated with quartz-rich plutons that have high Na2O:K2O and high gold:copper but low molybdenum: copper ratios dominate. Porphyry copper occurrences are reported in the literature from Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Cuba. Only the porphyry copper deposits from Puerto Rico are extensively described in the literature; consequently the Caribbean porphyry copper province in general is not as well documented as the southern Cordilleran orogen. Because past published technical descriptions are incomplete, some data presented here are new to the literature. The Caribbean includes the island arcs between North and South America. Porphyry copper occurrences are known from the Greater Antilles, the generally east-west trending group of islands that lies south of North America. Fig. 48, therefore, only covers the Greater Antilles portion of the Caribbean. Porphyry copper deposits in this area are not described by the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model in details of metallization (general paucity of molybdenum), alteration (scarcity of orthoclase), or petrography (preponderance of quartz diorite). Therefore, this model should be modified to include deposits associated with quartz-bearing plutons such as those found in the Caribbean. In the Meme deposit on Haiti ore occurs in skarn adjacent to the quartz diorite phase of a composite quartz monzonite-granodio-rite-quartz diorite pluton (Kesler, 1968). This deposit, with a K-Ar 66 m.y. date, is not included in Fig. 48 as a porphyry copper deposit because metallization is restricted largely to the intruded rocks. Although the intrusive rocks at the Meme deposit may contain sulfide near skarn contacts they are otherwise essentially unaltered. Porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clarke (1972) have not been reported in the Caribbean area.

The first progress in American ore dressing practice was made in the mills of the Mother Lode in Calif., the Comstock Lode in Nev., and Gilpin County in Colo., during the years 1861 to 1870, when the ancient wooden stamp battery, with square wooden stems, was converted into the 'California' stamp made of wrought and cast iron, with round stems which rotated. Eli Whitney Blake invented the jaw crusher in 1858 for stone crushing, and it was soon used for crushing ore. F. W. Gates' gyratory crusher followed twenty years later. S. R. Krom, Thomas A. Edison, and others improved the Cornish rolls by increasing their size and spring pressures; the Symons Brothers made horizontal and vertical disc crushers; W. Ball and E. T. Leavitt designed powerful steam stamps for Lake Superior native copper ores; and jigs were mechanized. William B. Frue, a mill superintendent in the Lake Superior copper district, invented the vanner in 1874. Arthur F. Wilfley built his riffled concentrating table in 1895, just after Dr. Robert H. Richards commenced his Ore Dressing. The Wilfley table so changed concentrator flow sheets that Dr. Richards was compelled to revise his text, and its publication was delayed until 1903. The value of sizing or classifying before concentration was recognized. Dr. Richards had persuaded the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. to install round tables with special surfaces to catch the 'extremely fine free mineral.'l Gravity concentration had achieved almost every refinement for recovering or separating minerals by the difference in their specific gravities. However, one serious problem remained unsolved, i.e., how to retrieve the enormous loss of the extremely fine mineral in the slime portion of the ore. Slime, then, as now, was not a precise term due to the variation in the mineral composition of the ores and the different requirements in crushing, grinding, sizing, and classifying. At that time, slime was considered to be fine sand and colloidal material passing 100 mesh.2 Most sulfide ore minerals are more friable than their associated gangue minerals, so that crushing and grinding increased the proportion of the extremely fine ore minerals in the slime. Sparkling specks of galena, chalcopyrite, argentite, or ruby silvers, according to the ore, floating away on the tailing stream from vanners and slime tables, were familiar sights in the old gravity concentrators. During the past decade, methods of producing bituminous coal in the state of Illinois, which ranks third in production among the states in which bituminous coal is mined, have undergone great changes. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of production by various methods in the state of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties. SHIFT in Production The term "mechanization" is commonly used to designate the coal-loading operation. However, in a broader sense it embraces the use of any and all mechanical and electrical equipment on the surface and underground. Strip mining is an intensive form of mechanization. The charge to be described was made in a seven-ton furnace, with a hearth twelve feet long and eight feet wide, with three gas and three air ports on each side. The stock of the entire heat was charged cold in one hour and five minutes, a part of the pig being first placed upon the bottom to protect it, then upon it the plate-scrap and blooms, and finally the remainder of the pig—some two thousand pounds. In fire hours and twenty-five minutes after beginning the charge the metal was melted down level, and two hundred pounds of hot twelve-per cent. spiegel was charged, care being taken to have it entirely immersed in the bath. In two hours more the bath was thoroughly melted and hot, and began to boil, i. e., the carbon began to be oxidized and evolved through the bath of covering slag as carbonic acid and carbonic oxide gases. Seventy-five pounds of lumps of Republic specular iron ore were added at this time, increasing the action, so that in ten minutes after the metal was in active ebullition. A test of the metal showed it to have about 0.90 per cent. carbon. One hour after the first ore was added a test was again taken, after thorough rabbling of the metal, and it was found to be 0.37 per cent. carbon. One hundred pounds more of lump Republic ore and about seventy-five pounds of limestone were then added, and fifty minutes later, after the bath was thoroughly rabbled, a -test showed the metal to have 0.23 per cent. carbon. Twenty-five pounds more of Republic iron ore were added and the metal allowed to boil for twenty minutes, when a test, after rabbling, showed the carbon to be 0.18 per cent. and the manganese to be 0.01 per cent.; the slag fracture was vitreous and of a very dark-green color. About forty pounds of limestone were added, and, the metal being hot and in a state of quiet ebullition, a hickory pole of twelve feet length and about four inches diameter, was run through the aperture in the centre door and held in a steady inclined position in the bath, with the end touching the bottom, the pole being shoved in further as it was burned away.
