While working, during the summer of 1877, upon the "Chemical composition and Physical Properties of Steel Rails," the results of which are given in my report with this title, I was struck with the surprising wear which some of the rails, which would ordinarily be called soft rails, had endured. At that time I knew of no chemical measure of softness except low carbon, and I found that a numher of rails with low carbon had endured as high or higher tonnage, with apparently as little loss of metal by wear, as those with higher carbon. My own work on steel rails that summer did not embrace any definite experiments as to the amount of metal worn off the rail per million tons which had passed aver it; and so I could get no more definite answer from that work, to the question at the head of this paper, than was given by comparing the appearance of the worn section of the rail with its tonnage. This comparison, however, served to arouse in my mind the query, whether the commonly received opinion as to the relation between the hardness and wearing power of steel is correct, as applied to steel rails. This opinion, if I am right, is: the harder the steel, the better will be the wear, and the limit of hardness is simply one of safety; hard, brittle steel being, of course, more liable to break than soft, tough steel. The query, although aroused, did not bear any immediate fruit, and, as will be evident to any one reading it, the report above referred to was written with the commonly received opinion in mind. Since that time I hare collected a little information upon this subject, which I should be glad to submit to the Institute, if for no other purpose, for the sake of arousing attention, and directing study to the question of hardness versus wear in steel rails. Before making known this information, howevcr, permit me a few words in reference to hardness. How shall we measure the hardness of steel ? Of the various ways of getting indications as to the hardness of steel, which are known, three mill serve our present purpose. These are: 1st. High carbon. It is generally agreed, I think, that at least within proper limits, the greater the amount of combined carbon in a piece of steel, the harder the steel, and I need not do

ALTHOUGH enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co. started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high-grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania Internacional Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corpn. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill. METHODS All of these mills use sodium sulfide for filming the oxide minerals, with the possible exception of the North Peru mill, and all use oily reagents. The total tonnage of strictly oxidized lead-silver ores concentrated by flotation is probably less than 2500 tons daily. The following figures give the various types of ores being treated:

Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. The important place in the economic life of the country that is occupied by the United States Geological Survey and the various state surveys is appreciatcd by most members of our Institute. To the public at large, the functions of these surveys are no doubt largely unknown, and taken for granted. Possibly a realization of the value of the work of these government branches is brought home most fully to that group of our members whose duties as examining engineers and mining geologists take them to mines and prospects in many different parts. The examining engineer or geologist is usually seeking for a judgment on the value of an enterprise from the standpoint of the useful minerals that may or may not be present; he must also attempt some prediction as to future market prices. On his opinion rests the determination of the expenditure of money, which rendered into other language means the expenditure of human effort. An opinion on an exploring venture or the reasoning out of the probable extensions of an orebody requires among many other things a background of knowledge covering the geologic horizons not only of an immediate area but of the surrounding area, a knowledge of the structural geology and of the causes that have operated to form the ores as they are. The great storehouses of this knowledge are the statistics, reports and maps issued by the various geological surveys. They supply the groundwork for additional observations. To these, reference is always made when going into a new district. The technique of work in the field and laboratory, and to some extent the hypotheses that underlie our methods of approach, have been formed by men such as Van Hise, Leith, Kemp, Spurr, Emmons and Lindgren, who developed their powers in the service of the geological surveys. In addition to whatever originality of thought, or power to observe facts and analyze them, may be our portion, we require, in the application of the arts and sciences, a knowledge of what has already been done. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before, and the extent of our vision often depends upon the thoroughness with which we form earlier work into one whole and make use of it.

THE importance of temper brittleness in alloy steels has long been realized in Europe, In the United States recognition of its importance has developed within the last several years. Many brittle failures encountered in parts made of alloy steel are undoubtedly attributable, wholly or in part, to temper brittleness. These failures have occurred particularly at low temperatures, under shock loading, and in the presence of notches, restraints and combined stresses. It has been almost universally accepted that plain carbon steels are not susceptible to temper brittleness. As a result, considerable effort has been expended in attempts to discover the manner in which alloying elements introduce temper brittleness. It is desired to raise the possibility that plain carbon steels are not only susceptible to temper brittleness, but are much more susceptible than alloy steels, in the sense that they embrittle much more rapidly. It is suggested that previous views, (that plain carbon steels are not susceptible), are based upon an erroneous interpretation of the experimental results. INTERPRETATION OF PREVIOUS DATA For many years the standard criterion for susceptibility of a steel to temper brittleness consisted of comparison of the energy absorption, in a notched-bar impact test at room temperature, of specimens that had received two heat treatments.1 One specimen (or group of specimens) was quenched, tempered, and quenched from the temper. The other specimen (or group) differed only in having received an embrittlement treatment, which might consist of a slow cool from the tempering temperature, or of an isothermal hold in the range 450-550°C subsequent to quenching from the temper. If the energy absorption of the specimen receiving the embrittlement treatment was lower than that of the specimen not given this treatment, it was said that the steel was susceptible to temper brittleness, If the energy absorptions were the same, it was said that the steel was not susceptible. Several investigators2,3 found that plain carbon steels showed negligible difference in energy absorption in such tests (at least when their manganese content was below 0.60 pct), and concluded that plain carbon steels are not susceptible to temper brittleness. Recently the deficiencies of the criterion mentioned above have been pointed out.4-6 The criterion now generally used for susceptibility to temper brittleness retains the heat treatments used in the earlier scheme, but instead of the notched-bar impact tests being made only at room temperature, they are made over a range of temperatures, covering the transition from ductile to brittle fracture, If the transition temperature of the specimens receiving the embrittlement treatment is higher than those

A standard set of coal mining laws for the entire United States is hardly practicsble, yet the numerous variations in the state laws for almost every item seems entirely unnecessary. The same useless variations appear in almost every comparable section with no apparent reason except that no attempt has ever been made to codify them, and as they were developed over a long period of time by innumerable individuals and legislatures, the present situation is the logical outcome of lack of cooperation between states. The ventilation of a mine is affected indirectly by many provisions not listed specifically under this heading, so that it would be necessary to tabulate the major portion of all the laws to secure a complete comparable digest; therefore only a few of the more important have been set down here. This point is well illustrated in the section providing for clearance between car and rib, which is intended as a safety measure against personal injury, but is very important from the standpoint of ventilation because of choked airways in mines on two-entry system. Confusing Phraseology Misinterpretation and confusion may be expected from the phraseology alone; one state provides that the scale of the mine map shall be "not more than 100 ft. to 1 in.;&apos;&apos; another state demands "not less than 100 ft. to 1 in." Both probably mean the same thing and seek to prevent the operator from furnishing a map on which the workings will appear SO small that the detail is illegible. Legislation is certainly indefinite that specifies structures must be fireproof when "near" a mine opening, and just what is a "dusty" or "gaseous" mine is open to argument in most of the states. The variation in spacing crosscuts and break-throughs and the limited number of men on a split seem entirely unnecessary, as the distance is not reduced in gaseous fields, excepting in Arkansas and Tennessee, which states produce a comparatively small amount of coal, and the number of men differs 100 per cent. and more for no apparent reason.

Discussion of the paper of F. L. Bosqui, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 101, May, 1915, pp. 997 to 1033. H. A. WHITE, Springs, Transvaal (communication to the Secretary*). -It is, as the author points out in his valuable paper, a, fact, that in many plants the "trommel washings" are allowed to become eyesores, but the simpler system of pumping the entire product direct to the tube-mill circuit will avoid the extra expense of separation and small-scale treatment when one considers the relative distance of the points and the proportionately small amount of water. It is a matter of record that in stamp batteries the increase of weight has been developed concurrently with the increased use of tube mills, but independently and on its own merits. The satisfactory duty, excellent running time, and freedom from breakages in the newer mills, such as the Modder Deep, with 2,000-1b. stamps, will probably go far in removing some of the conservative prejudices mentioned by Mr. Bosqui. The success of the City Deep trial of the Nissen stamp cannot be entirely attributed to better feed distribution and discharge effects (published experiments on two-face discharge mortar boxes showed no advantages). Attention is directed to the treatment costs given by the author both before and after the increased capacity resulting from the addition of 16 Nissen stamps at Modder B. It will be observed that the only item of cost resisting the tendency to reduction caused by increased tonnage is that of milling, which has risen 1.3c. With reference to the provision for amalgamation in the new plans, it seems obvious that a great loss of head would be eliminated by passing the tube cone overflow over a separate top series of plates; three at the top and three at the bottom will effect the maximum amalgamation. This plan is followed at the Princess Estate and Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Modderfontein Deep Levels, Ltd., and Geduld Proprietary. Mines, Ltd., but elsewhere reliance is placed upon ample cone capacity and the underflow only is passed over three plates after going through the tube mill, while the overflow is passed direct to the cyanide works; both methods avoid the largely unnecessary elevation of considerable quantities of water, fine sand and slime involved in Mr. Bosqui&apos;s scheme.

Discussion of the paper of Ralph Hayden, presented at the Butte meeting,. August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1443 to 1467. JOHN V. N. Done, Denver, Colo.:-Mr. Hayden has placed the metallurgical profession greatly in his debt .for this valuable paper. The importance of such a complete description of the research work on which is based the building of a plant to add at least 10,000,000 lb. of copper per year to the production of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at small expense, will be appreciated by all our members, and especially those who are facing similar problems. The information given in regard to the treatment methods discarded will be a great help to many workers, as it is often of as much importance to know what ? not to do" as what method to adopt. I Some further comment on the tests of the Dorr thickener may be of interest, as they have led to developments which I believe will prove of great importance. Before the Dorr thickener was installed, I had shown Mr. Laist reports from the Steptoe Valley concentrator, in which it was stated that one thickener 17 ft. in diameter was the equivalent in settling capacity of twelve 8-ft. cones, although the latter-contained double the surface area.. Mr. Laist, had made careful tests on the settling capacity of in 8-ft. cone on Anaconda slime, and we naturally expected the thickener would show a much higher capacity for equivalent area. When, is Mr. Hayden stated, the tests showed no increase, I realized that we were comparing it with a cone under test conditions, while the Steptoe results were based on operative conditions, find the explanation given by Mr. Waddell for the great difference had been, that " there is only one unit to watch instead of twelve, without the constant result of feed to twelve cones becoming unbalanced. Also the one 1 1/8-in. spigot used on the Dow requires no attention compared with the dozen 3/8-in. spigots of the cones.&apos; I realized also as a. result of the tests that the total settling area required to handle the immense tonnage of the Anaconda company would be enormous, and very expensive in view of the housing required by Montana climatic conditions. After studying the matter over, I told Mr. Laist that I believed a thickener operating in a much shallower tank would have nearly the same capacity. I asked him to test it out in the same tank filled 3 ft. deep, and stated that if my idea

NAME AND OBJECT. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise four classes, namely (1) Members ; (2) Honorary Members , (3) Associates , and (4) Honorary Associates Only Members and Associates residing within the United States of America, Republic of Mexico and Dominion of Canada shall be entitled to vote at the meetings of the Institute. THE subject assigned is rather a broad one but it, is doubtless expected that it will be dealt with as applying to metals and alloys and not to the ob-taining of metals from their ores. The liberty will further be taken of confining the matter discussed to copper and some of the copper alloys. Everyone is familiar with copper, at least everyone who attends the meetings of the A. I. M. E., so no gen-eral description of the metal is necessary. There are still to be recognized two classes of copper and each of these has some sub-divisions. The two general classes are electrolytic and fire-refined copper. Since there is some misunderstanding about these materials, definitions are in order. Electrolytic is just what the name implies. It may and it should be very pure but with high current densi-ties or very impure anodes, or both, impurities such as antimony, tellurium and lead may be carried over to the, cathode. Any one of these, or a combination in which they occur, are alike fatal to good working quali-ties in the resulting metal. Of course, these metals are not supposed to be deposited with copper, but slimes containing them may be &apos;occluded. in the deposited cop-per or held in rough cathodes if not washed with suffi-cient thoroughness.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In answer to one of the inquiries made of Mr. Conner, and as a matter of historical record, I beg to say that the idea of supporting the strata over worked-out areas in coalmines by flushing the openings full of culm originated and was put into actual practice by the late R. C. Luther, a former member of the Institute, at that time Chief Mining Engineer, and later General Manager, of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. In the early 80&apos;s the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. purchased from Messrs. Hecksher & Co. the Eohinoor colliery, situated in the western part of the borough of Shenan-doah, Pa. On taking possession of the colliery the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. made a conlplete resurvey of the mine-workings, giving an absolutely correct map which showed not only the plan of the mine-workings, but also every improvement on the surface over the workings, and the marked features of the surface of the ground. Tidal elevations were shown at every eurvey-station in the mine and on the surface, so that, as is the case with all the maps of the company, contour-maps of either the surface or the bottom of any coal-seam, or geological cross-sections, could be constructed directly from the information on the mine-maps. In a cornparatively short time after the company took possession of the colliery, the workings which extended under the western portion of the borough of Shenandoah began to cause trouble and damage dwellings and other buildings in that section of the town. The lots in this section had been sold, in many cases, to individuals by the Gilbert & Shaefer Estate, owners of the coal-lands on which the colliery was located. In

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and truck at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. Haulage Cycle Established from Existing Operations For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between and the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

At present it is impossible to estimate closely the amount of oil obtainable from a given area of land. However, after the completion of a few properly distributed prospect wells, one can calculate the approximate yield of the sands penetrated, with a probable error of say 50 per cent. Even rough predictions of this kind are of value in large operations. Without wells upon it, one can never be absolutely certain that an area will produce any oil whatever, and one can only indulge in wild guesses of the probable productive area, before the geological structure has been carefully contoured and the top of the basal water plotted on a map. This requires wells. At times it is desirable to form an idea of the possible yield of oil in advance of drilling, as in cases where the price asked for undeveloped land seems too high, but where the probability of finding oil is furnished by neighboring development, supported by the geology. In such cases the most one can do is to make an estimate of possible maximum yield, which may of course far exceed results, and which is of use mainly in the prevention of excessive initial investment. The method is very significant in a general way, as in regions like the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, where the productive sands in the Cretaceous shale are so few and so thin and fine that they cannot develop very great production, although the high quality of the oil probably will counterbalance this defect sufficiently to give local profit in favorable areas. Reservoir Capacity of Sands.—The porosity of a stratum is the measure of its maximum reservoir capacity for liquids and gases. The porosity may be determined experimentally and must be used in connection with the total volume of the sand.

Of the numerous methods that have been tested or considered for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores, this article deals only with proven flowsheets that are adopted in plants in operation or which have been reliably pilot-plant tested. Several recommended layouts are described and discussed. They illustrate recent trends and embody improvements and new features that have resulted from the experience acquired in the operation of the plants already in service. They have been developed, in the last few years, in the course of designing several iron ore beneficiation plants of various types and sizes. Some of the design features in the layouts which are submitted represent, in some respects, personal views and may not meet the full approval of others in this field. It is hoped that this presentation will provide an opportunity for constructive discussion of the problems involved and of suitable solutions.

Among a host of challenges dictated by the explosively developing scientific and technical revolution, the improvement of control and management is one of the most essential problems. This problem is also of far-reaching importance for the oil and gas industries. An oil and gas extracting complex is an involved multilink system characterized by a great number of elements and by intricate interconnections between these elements. Of paramount importance for these systems is the quality of control. Any deviation of the control from the optimum reduces the effectiveness of the system and deteriorates its basic technical and economic factors. In case of large systems, even a relatively small deviation from the optimum may result in considerable material and power losses. Optimization of control of large production systems is therefore one of the basic means to enhance their effectiveness. The present paper discusses a development control problem for a multilayer gas deposit using the method of simultaneous exploitation of several strata by means of a single well. The optimum control is achieved by determining the dynamics of changes in the number of producing wells in a reservoir with regard to the depth of occurrence of these reservoirs as well as the difference in the time of introduction of the wells from drilling and their transfer to another reservoir. A mathematical model was constructed for the problem under consideration and a method was given to solve this problem. The problem was dealt with under the assumption that either each of the reservoirs or a part of them have vertically overlying areas and that there is no hydrodynamic interference between the horizons. One of the characteristic steps in the march of modern scientific progress is the substitution of improved time-saving and labor-saving appliances for the antiquated and, in most cases, inconvenient forms of chemical and physical apparatus used by the earlier experimenters. This fact is strongly impressed upon us when we consider the question of the employment of illuminating-gas as a source of light, heat and power. Concerning its value as a light-producer, let the record of the past three-quarters of a century speak for itself. As a factor for power, we have evidence of its efficiency in the shape of the gas-engine. But its adaptability as a medium of heat, is the feature to which I wish to call attention, and in a special direction, viz., the assaying of ores. Gas assay-furnaces have been known and used for some years, but not to any very great extent, in this country at least. Therefore no apology on my part is required for the description I now give of a complete gas assaying-plant. The illustration accompanying this paper is a faithful representation of the group, as it was designed by, and arranged for myself, and appears in actual running order in my laboratory to-day. Its duty is to do roasting, crucible-fusion, scorification and cupellation. The furnace at the left is for roasting sulphurets or other ores for experimentation or actual work. In both the Flat River district of southeast Missouri and the Joplin district of southwest Missouri the lead concentrates are of very high grade, free of arsenic, antimony and bismuth, and contain no gold and very little silver. The general practice in both districts is to smelt the concentrates containing 70 to 85 per cent lead on Scotch hearths, to recover 70 to 85 per cent of the lead, and then smelt in a blast furnace the slag formed in the Scotch hearths to bring the total recovery of lead from lead concentrates to over 97.5 per cent. At the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., no Scotch hearths are used. In the other smelters in the district the blast furnace plays a minor role to the Scotch hearth . The concentrates produced from the Flat River district are either table concentrates or flotation concentrates containing: Both types of concentrates are received at Herculaneum in box cars after being sampled. Great care is taken in weighing and sampling of cars of concentrates and in the determination of moisture and lead contents. The concentrates are unloaded into bins by an adaptation of scoop grain unloader. Four men unload and sweep a 40 to 45-ton box car of concentrates in 30 minutes. The same grade of concentrates is received each day and no metal-bearing fluxes are available. The problem is to get as high a recovery as possible as cheaply as possible from the high-grade lead concentrates produced by the company&apos;s concentrating mills. Sintering The bulk of the sulphur is removed from the concentrates and the fine concentrate particles are agglomerated by double roasting on typical Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines.

Originally, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are. now literally the heart of the mining machine. During world war NO. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the Same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Rulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a Proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives1 will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. EVERY new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were intro¬duced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose.
