AT the San Francisco meeting of the Institute last year, I presented, through the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas; some results of experiments on the roasting and leaching of concentrator tailings. After it became apparent that flotation rather than leaching was clearly the better method of handling the particular problem under consideration, before dismantling the experimental equipment, some data were secured on roasting and leaching the concentrate itself in competition with smelting. Some of the results obtained are given in the following paper and they a re of particular interest at this time in. view of the large quantities of flotation concentrates with their somewhat difficult smelting characteristics now being produced. A complete wet process? consists of roasting and leaching the calcines in dilute sulphuric acid produced from the roaster gases, roasting the residue with salt and leaching with dilute tower liquors (the well-known Longmaid-Henderson process) and recovering the copper, silver and gold by cementation or electrolysis or a combination of both. It is evident, however, that the residue from the first leaching, carrying about 20 per cent. of the copper and all of the silver and gold, can be smelted if preferable. In considering the application of the scheme to individual cases, it must be remembered that freight plays a. large part in any reduction process wherein smelting is not conducted at the, mouth of the mine, and that it is not practicable today to build small smelting plants for individual operations. The experiments may be grouped under four main heads: Roasting, leaching, chloridizing residue, and recovery of copper from solutions. The products of two concentrators were used: The Nacozari concentrates were the product of a large modern mill not using flotation, the copper mineral being largely chalcopyrite; and the Tyrone concentrates, the product of an experimental mill including flotation, the copper mineral being chiefly chalcocite. THE increased demand for titanium alloys with improved high-temperature creep strengths has stimulated interest in silicon as an alloying addition to titanium. Silicon is a potent solid-solution strength-ener and, if added in sufficient concentration and properly heat-treated, can also dispersion-strengthen titanium by eutectoid decomposition.' However, better understanding of the nature and distribution of the resulting silicide dispersion in more highly alloyed titanium matrices is necessary for the development of useful titanium alloys which utilize the latter strengthening mechanism. This note describes the chemical and crystallographic characteristics of the silicide phase as it occurs in a typical high-temperature near-a titanium alloy matrix. Several Ti-6A1-3Sn-3Zr a11oys containing various amounts of silicon ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 pct were melted as 10- to 20-lb ingots and processed into 1/2-in.-diam bar stock. The microstructures of specimens annealed at various temperatures were conveniently summarized by the (Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr)-Si pseudobinary phase diagram illustrated in Fig. 1. Comparison with the Ti-Si equilibrium diagram indicates the substitutional solutes (Al-Sn-Zr) increase the eutectoid temperature and decrease the a terminal solubility. Annealing at temperatures sufficiently high to dissolve the silicon in a ß solid solution and cooling rapidly enough to preclude coarsening generally produced a uniform dispersion of fine silicide particles, whereas annealing at temperatures near but below the ß transus produced relatively coarse silicide particles. Annealing in the limited a, plus 3 region produced a duplex coarse and fine silicide array. Several a-annealed specimens were examined by X-ray diffraction to determine the crystallographic identity of the precipitate phase. Copper Ka X-ray diffraction patterns of bulk specimens which contained 0.5 and 0.8 pct Si were virtually identical to that of the silicon-free Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr base alloy except for a slight shift in some of the high-angle diffraction lines. Apparently the silicide volume fraction was too low to be detected in bulk specimens. X-

Although, separating or concentrating minerals, based on differences in. their magnetic properties has been practiced for years1 the early industrial applications of magnetic separators were involved with the most highly magnetic materials. These early separators were used to concentrate magnetite, separate metallic iron from furnace products, and separate iron and brass turnings. Next, the addition of a pretreatment operation, such as roasting or calcining, to transform certain iron-bearing minerals into a highly magnetic compound that could readily be separated from the altered mineral mixture using existing magnetic separation machines was added to the flowscheme. As the number of magnetic-separator installations grew, steady development of better equipment evolved including the design and implementation of induced magnets having high-intensity fields, These developments of course greatly expanded the field of magnetic separation and made it possible to commercially separate or concentrate very weakly magnetic minerals which previously had been considered as nonmagnetic minerals. A number of different designs of magnetic separators were well developed and the unit operation of magnetic separation was gaining wide acceptance in mineral processing operations when two events occurred that dampened these developments. First, the Mesabi iron range with its direct-shipping iron ore was discovered and placed into operation. This of course significantly reduced the need for magnetic separation to meet the raw material requirements of the iron and steel industry. Second, the advent of selective froth flotation, was so successful in solving many mineral process problems that electrical concentration techniques being developed at that time, including magnetic-separation methods, were either terminated or received low priority ratings. During the past two decades interest has been renewed in the use of electrical concentration methods to solve mineral separation problems. As the direct-shipping iron ore reserves are depleted more emphasis has been placed on magnetic upgrading of lower value iron ore available throughout the world. In addition, magnetic separation techniques have found numerous applications in the non-metallic and industrial minerals industry to supplement froth flotation and thus add to the variety of beneficiation methods available.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. The capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. Centralized automatic control was built into the original and expanded facilities to the greatest extent possible, considering the state of the art at that time. Installation of additional control

In previous classifications of coal, it has been customary to regard moisture eliminated from coal samples between 20 and 100 C. as extraneous matter, rather than as a constituent part of the coal. It seems, however, that the physical character and use properties of the low-rank coals are directly related to the amount of such moisture present, and recent chemical work has shown' that such coals contain unstable groupings which decompose between 20 C. and temperatures somewhat above 100" C., with the splitting off of moisture. According to this view, the moisture eliminated from air-dried coal below boiling point is similar in all essential respects to moisture eliminated above 100" C., and is produced by analogous reactions; and inasmuch as the moisture given off above 100" C. has always been treated as a constituent of the volatile matter of coal, it would seem that consistent usage would include as a part of the volatile matter all moisture present as an essential component of the coal as it occurs in nature. As a matter of experience, it seems clear that the general physical and chemical characteristics of the low-rank coals are largely determined by or related to the moisture, whether chemically or physically combined, present in air-dried coal; it is also demonstrable by trial that the low-rank coals cannot be satisfactorily classified on a purely chemical basis by using the moisture free form of analysis. The low-rank coals of the western United States include numerous well-defined types, many of which were referred to in a classification proposed by Ashley,2 in which the physical and use properties of the coals were made the primary basis for their systematic grouping. When testing this classification by replotting analyses of these type coals according to the Seyler scheme of classification,3 a satisfactory parallelism between use properties and chemical constitution of the dry coal was found among

DURING several years immediately preceding the adoption of wet-charge smelting at McGill, various necessary conditions affecting this procedure, such as plant rearrangement and the metallurgical nature of the concentrate produced at the concentrator, were fully considered. Wet-charge smelting is not altogether novel to the recently recon-structed smelter at McGill. A number of years prior to this improve-ment, when flotation methods were initiated at the concentrator, large tonnages of wet and (at that time) sticky flotation concentrate were charged directly into the reverberatory furnaces, because of the difficulty in handling the entire tonnage in the roasters. The plant had excess reverberatory units and this surplus furnace capacity was utilized to smelt raw flotation concentrate. During the years 1927 and 1928, a number of actual operating furnace test runs were made to determine in principle the feasibility of wet-smelt-ing operation. Results were encouraging, and in November 1932 the roasting plant was shut clown. For some time thereafter the wet feed was delivered directly to the reverberatory side-charging calcine hoppers already in place. Feeding the wet material through the old calcine hoppers and charge holes into the furnace involved considerable labor, but under the conditions existing at that time it was desirable to continue wet smelting even under the handicap of this laborious procedure. The smelting plant during this period was on a curtailed production basis, operating only about 15 days per month. The alternate starting up and shutting clown of the roasting plant presented a difficult problem and charging the wet material directly to the furnace entirely eliminated this difficulty. The roasting plant was never operated thereafter.

For the purposes of this analysis it is assumed that the petroleum industry has undergone a basic economic change whereby the degree of competition present in its operation is reduced by the collective control of production brought about by statme-directed proration. Formerly freely competitive in all its parts, the industry is now fully competitive only in its marketing, its manufacturing and transportation, its search for new oil supplies, its drilling operations (with some qualifications), and its capital movements. The practical problem before the industry in its new status is the maintenance of equilibrium, with planned control of crude-oil production (proration) substituted for competition and price as the regulatory mechanism at one point in the supply-demand system. It is further assumed that proration has become so firmly established in the legal and operating framework of the business that it may be looked upon as an institution. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the effect of unregulated drilling upon the orderly functioning of proration. Economic Structure of Petroleum Industry The economic structure of the petroleum industry, under the current form of proration, may be visualized, in simplified form, as shown in Fig. 1. This diagram is designed to indicate the existing mechanism whereby supply and demand are equated. Demand is created largely by conditions external to the oil business, whereas supply is conditioned by a series of stages incidental to the discovery, development and production of a resource. The time elements involved in changes in demand and supply are of an entirely different order, the demand factor being much more flexible and "quicker" than the supply factors. It should be observed, also, that the position of price, formerly between "demand" and "supply," has been moved to a sidewise location where it still affects demand but influences current supply only through its bearing upon proration, drilling and search. THE accuracy with which detachable bits can be sharpened and gauged by grinding has made possible refinements in design that cannot be attained by forging. This applies particularly to gauging, where accuracy is of the greatest importance. Gauge changes of 1/32 in., and even 1/64 in., are now feasible, whereas 1/16 -in. changes are about the limit in accuracy for forged bits. These small changes in gauge are feasible, however, only with certain fundamental principles of design. Within reasonable limits the depth to which a hole can be drilled is dependent primarily upon the loss in gauge, or diameter, of the bit. In drilling there is always a certain amount of "overdrilling"-the bouncing of the bit in the hole and its rotation wear away the walls-so that the actual diameter of the hole is greater than the diameter of the bit. The amount of this overdrilling depends upon the kind of rock being drilled, and is sometimes sufficient to permit the use of the same diameter of bit for the full depth of the hole. If, for instance, a 1 3/4-in. diameter bit overdrills 1/32 in. in diameter, and loses 1/64 in. in gauge in drilling 2 ft. of hole, the bottom of the hole is still 1/64 in, larger than the original diameter of the bit, and a new 1 ¾ -in. bit can be used to drill the next 2 ft. If, however, the overdrill is less than the loss in gauge, the next bit must be of smaller diameter. The first requisite in reducing loss of gauge in drilling is to have the points and corners of the wings of the bit cut circles of the same diameter, thus producing a reaming surface with continuous bearing on the wall of the hole. The greater the reaming surface, the less the gauge loss that is to be expected. If the reaming surface, however, is too large, it may impede the rotation of the bit through excessive friction. This principle was probably first recognized in the design of the Carr bit (Fig. 1), a bit with a single cutting edge of wide angle, a definite reaming edge, and a large center hole. The same idea was followed in designing the double-taper cross bits, which are now standard almost everywhere.

Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimehs, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. THE smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbo hearths have found some favor, in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is not needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its .use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation-by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning. Although suitable, for, operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths-a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of. this dust and fume has been a serious problem.

Underground construction involves all the legal problems common to the construction industry and adds a nice little group of its own. Elements which will ultimately affect contractor-owner relationship commence to form almost as soon as the owner conceives of the project. A few of these with emphasis on their application to underground construction will be mentioned. (1) During the design stage, determination must be made as to whether the specifications will be general or restrictive. To what extent will the operations of the contractor be controlled? Can he proceed to use any method of tunnel excavation that he desires and only be responsible for the end result or will specific excavation procedures be required? Can explosives be used? Under what restrictions? Are tunnel supports required? How long can the crown behind the heading remain unsupported? What kind of supports are required? What restrictions on the placement of tunnel-lining concrete will be required? Each of you could extend this list for many pages but these illustrations are indicative of decisions that must be made in advance of bidding, and the ultimate decision on each question can have a significant effect on the legal relationships that exist between the contractor and the owner. The owner wants a good job at a fair price. On the other hand, nothing is worse than having a tunnel collapse during the construction period, with its extra costs, loss of life, and delay to the entire project. If the specifications are too restrictive, increased costs of performance are bound to occur. Owners save tremendous amounts of money by obtaining a contractor who has been ingenious in devising the most economical construction procedure. Care must be taken in drafting the specifications so that the benefits of such ingenuity will not be lost. (2) HOW is the contract to be awarded? Will there be open bidding, a restricted list of bidders, or will there be negotiations with a comparatively few contractors? If it is a government project, whether Federal, state, or

In previous Technical Notes, W. R. Rose' and W. Purcell have discussed the capillary pressure data presented by Welge.' Welge obtained capillary pressure curves of the imbibition type in which it was necessary to apply to the apparent wetting phase a greater pressure than that of the non-wetting phase to complete the cycle and reduce the non-wetting phase saturation to low values. Rose suggests in his Note that conditions of equilibrium could not have prevailed, since the. non-wetting phase pressure must always be the greater. Pur-cell in his Note, proceeds to postulate a pore system consisting. of a series of "holes in a doughnut," in which he contends that under equilibrium conditions it is necessary to resort to negative capillary pressures before significant wetting phase displacement can take place. There is a remarkable similarity between the shape of the capillary pressure curve calculated by Purcell and those measured by Welge. It is the purpose of this Note to show that, because Purcell neglected to account for the behavior of the residual wetting phase saturation, his system was not in equilibrium during imbibition; and, furthermore, that if his system had been in equilibrium, negative capillary pressures would not have been possible. In Purcell's pore system, the residual wetting phase will form pendular rings at the interstitial spaces existing somewhere within the system, for example, such as those spaces between "doughnuts" as shown in Fig. 1. The true capillary pressure is that across the pendular ring interface, and for the system to be in equilibrium the pressure drop across all interfaces must be the same, including that across the interface in the tight pores A of diaphragm B (Fig. 1). As the pressure across the cell is reduced, the advancing interface will move into the pore from the diaphragm, but at each pressure, the curvature of the pendular rings must be the same as that of the advancing interface if equilibrium is to prevail. Since equilibrium conditions are the basis for the entire argument, it follows that pendular rings must grow as wetting phase enters the pore, that is, as the pressure across the cell is lowered. In Purcell's calculated curve, the residual wetting phase saturation remains constant as the capillary pressure decreases. Thus, his curve does not represent an equilibrium process.

1. The purpose of the National Research Council as organized for war purposes is twofold, to stimulate those outside its own personnel to conduct researches of importance for winning the war and to carry on such researches through its personnel to a limited extent. How this is clone is explained in Section 10. "Research" is used here in a very broad sense, including, for instance, inventing and developing mechanical and physical devices. The need of this work arises from the inevitable concentration of most of the governmental war agencies on the production and transportation of war materials of. the types now adopted, as distinguished from devising new kinds of instrumentalities, such as armor, guns, aircraft, and apparatus for detecting, locating, observing, signaling, transporting, and many other military purposes. But it is important that we should devise new agencies. The war came near being won by an invention, the submarine, and its course has been affected greatly by two other inventions, tanks and aircraft. In spite of our numerical superiority victory may well be snatched from us by an invention, if we allow Germany to outstrip us in inventing. Hence the importance of the Council's work in mobilizing and organizing the services of the patriotic civilian experts throughout the country, so as to bring their powers to bear on important war problems and on inventing war devices, as an adjunct to the development work of the regular governmental bodies. 2. Status of the Council.-Though President Wilson's request caused the Council to be created by the National Academy of Sciences under its congressional charter in 1916; though his executive order of May 11, 1918, directs the heads of "Governmental departments immediately concerned" to "continue to co-operate with it in every way that may be required;" and though the Government has contributed largely to its financial support (Section 12, page 10), it is not a department of the Government but an independent research body, aiming to evolve the necessary mechanism for the novel work of systematic stimulation and guidance of research. Thus the Government, which instigated the creation of the Council, recognizes and collaborates with it, and in part supports it. The Council acts moreover as the Department of Science and Research of the Council of National Defense.

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the, Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows The Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize, The J E Johnson, Jr Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the James Douglas Medal ROBERT W HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules 1 The award shall consist of two prizes, first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money, a certificate to accompany each prize The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal 2 The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee consider¬ing the awards In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improve¬ment of production and quality of material. 3 A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval 4 The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute 5 The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist " This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee

J.-I should like to ask if Mr. Bach does not think it rather harmful to let the amen depend entirely on the company, whether it would not be a good plan to let the men aid a little in the support of these organizations? Also whether he has had any experience with utilizing the Y. M. C. A. in this connection. E. E. BACH, Ellsworth, Pa.-That question is always raised whenever there is discussion upon this subject. So far as we are concerned that would not help a bit; our people do not have that feeling, because .we have a company which these men recognize has a corps of very sympathetic officials in every way. I remember the assistant general manager lived out in one of these mining towns for a while. His difficulty was that every man, no matter what, who or where he was, if he had, or thought lie had, a, complaint, had the right of way to his office, and didn't have to stop at all. That is the spirit that predominates all through it. This is also the spirit of the mine foremen, two of whom were trained in our own night school, and it is the spirit of the fire boss and the general spirit of the people. They do not feel that we are trying to feed them with a spoon. As to the Y. M. C. A., we feel that it would be impracticable for us. R H. VAIL, New York, N. Y.-It would be very interesting if Mr. Bach would tell a little more about the control of the dispensing of intoxicants. There are many communities where the state intends to do that but does not succeed very well, and as Mr. Bach has spoken of the speakeasies on the environment of these towns, it would he well to know more about the problem of eliminating those.

Demand is created largely by conditions external to the oil business, whereas supply is conditioned by a series of stages incidental to the discovery, development and production of a resource. The time elements involved in changes in demand and supply are of an entirely different order, the demand factor being much more flexible and "quicker" than the supply factors. It should be observed, also, that the position of price, formerly between "demand" and "supply," has been moved to a sidewise location where it still affects demand but influences current supply only through its bearing upon proration, drilling and search. THE Montreal mine, operated by the Montreal Mining Co., is four miles west of Ironwood, Mich., in Iron County, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost producing property on the Gogebic Iron Range of the Lake Superior district. Its production is 4000 tons of hematite per day from an average depth of 2300 ft. This tonnage is hoisted through a five-compartment vertical shaft. Several mining methods are in use but in the larger orebodies the method is sublevel caving. ORE OCCURRENCE AND CHARACTERISTICS The main orebodies of the Montreal mine lie in eastward-pitching troughs formed by the intersections of intrusive dikes with impervious members of the iron formation. The formation has an average width of 425 ft., strikes east and west and clips north at approximately 62°. The dikes dip south at 45° and bear north 20° from the strike of the formation, making the intersections with various members pitch east at 16°. The dikes are not continuous across the formation but are interrupted ,by a longitudinal bedding fault, which has a throw of 380 ft. vertically and 885 ft. horizontally. North of the fault zone the formation is called "hanging," south it is called "footwall" formation. The faulting has created two ore-bearing horizons; viz., at the inter-section of hanging dikes with the slate members and the foot dikes with the quartzite footwall. In each formation the main ore-bearing member consists of wavy beds of hard chest interlaid with hematite. In the most productive part of the mine, where the sublevel caving method is employed, a hanging-formation dike lies in juxtaposition with a footwall dike and the iron formation carries ore in certain sections from the quartzite footwall to the hanging (like. Here a horizontal section of the orebody may be 300 to 400 ft. wide for a length of 150 ft. or more and tail out lengthwise in both the foot and hanging formations. The footwall ore section is much longer than the hanging wall because of the orebody's greater height above the "pitching dike."

William B. Phillips, Birmingham, Ala.: The questions raised by Messrs. Wilkens and Nitze are in the highest degree interesting to owners of low-grade iron-ores, aizd no less so to blast-furnace managers. If it can be shown that ores heretofore considered worthless can be brought within the limit of economic use, many large and readily accessible deposits may come into market on the one hand, while on the other the possible increase in the output of the furnace per ton of ore used will prove of advantage to the iron-maker. It cannot, of course, be claimed that this process has been employed on a working-scale with respect to iron-ores, and in so far as concerns results on a large scale no one is any wiser than his fellow. Granting that the results obtained in an experimental way (and certainly the experiments were conducted with a great deal of care) can be attained in practice, we would still be facing the question, what it would cost to get them. In the absence of any specific data, we have to fall back on general principles, helped along, as far as possible, by indications afforded by the experiments. I must confess that as regards the Clinton ores, which I have studied to some extent, I am not sanguine of making a ton of 53 to 54 per cent. concentrates from less than 1.75 tons of 40 per cent. raw ore. It may be possible to get the iron in the heads to 56 to 57 per cent., but the lesser richness of the middlings will probably reduce this to 53 to 54 per cent. in the salable stuff. As the authors remark, it is not worth while to discuss the concentration of the better grades of " soft" Clinton ore; for the price at which they are now delivered at the furnaces, and the comparatively limited amount now remaining, render their concentration unadvisable. THE point to be made most clear in this paper is the economic value of flotation in the Benguet mill flow sheet. It is rather a statement of effect with no attempt at a technical explanation of the cause. Certain well-known, easily understood reagents, mechanisms and principles have been adapted to the conditions at Benguet, and have proved to be more successful than was demonstrated in the laboratory. The mechanical and metallurgical development of this particular operation was arrived at by trial and error, with fortunately very little error. Changes were slow, of necessity, which in the end proved a blessing in that time was afforded for observation and analysis of the disturbing factors; and as a result each change was a definite step towards higher efficiency. Many of these steps were unpredictable from labora-tory work because of the varied and differing characteristics of ores met with in daily operation of the mill, which were practically impossible to reproduce on a laboratory scale. The Benguet mill receives daily ores that differ as much as if they were delivered from three different properties. There is first the surface and upper-level zone, which produces an oxidized secondary ore contain-ing considerable iron oxide, manganese oxide and some organic matter. Formerly, most of this ore consisted of very soft fill with some hard rock mixed in. It also contained an unusual amount of iron and aluminum sulfate, which formed hydrates upon entering the alkaline cyanide solu-tion and caused excessive frothing. When flotation was introduced in the Benguet mill the general char-acteristics of this upper-level ore had changed considerably, in that it was practically all newly mined, fairly hard ore. It still contained many of the same disturbing elements, but was somewhat simpler to treat than formerly. The small proportion of fines is still troublesome in flotation, and plant practice probably does not show more than 80 per cent extraction on this small portion of the ore. No definite figure on this is available, as this particular ore is delivered at irregular intervals

During July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co., at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area of 28,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.—No trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 ft., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate in square feet per hour if they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.—The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calculated, but it would be large if really high cuts were made.
