UNLIKE the development of sintering lead, copper and zinc ores, the sintering of fine irony material had its birth, not as a result of gradual growth along lines aimed at the production of sintered and agglomerated product, but because the success of the sintering operation in other lines had been brought to the attention of the ironmasters, who were immediately attracted by the prospect of being able to convert their own fines-into a similar product. The abundance of iron ores in the United States and their comparative cheapness had led iron men into the habit of not paying particular attention to the fine material blown out of their blast furnaces. Hundreds of thousands of tons had been stacked up and used only during times of shortage of ore and then usually without any preliminary preparation, though many attempts had been made to briquette it. Briquettes proved good material, but the operation of briquetting was too expen-sive when applied to iron-ore fines. The development of the iron-ore blast furnace in the United States tended toward large units, high columns and heavy blast pressure, and this tendency is still peculiar to this country, whereas in the other countries the tendency has been to smaller units, lower columns and lower blasts. The high blast pressures and swift driving of the American blast furnace tend, of course, to produce more flue dust than European practice, and this production of flue dust was augmented when large quantities of soft ore, of which the Mesabi is typical, came on to the market. These ores are desirable chemically but physically they are soft, friable and fine, and when they are used in the iron blast furnace the flue dust produc-tion is increased. The necessity of rehandling the flue dust lead to briquetting on an extensive scale. The binders used were either chemical or mechanical, and in one system the briquettes were kiln fired in very high temperatures. Rotary kilns, coal or oil fired, were used extensively, and gave a product of hard and more or less nodulized material, but at considerable cost. This was the situation in regard to iron flue dust when the late James Gayley and his associates became interested in the idea of sintering the iron blast-furnace flue dusts under their own fuel (included coke dust) of which they carried between 15 and 30 per cent.

I was asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had not yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a 'air deal is all the man wants.

MCLEAN' has shown that the total strain obtained during creep of aluminum polycrystals arises exclusively from the mechanisms of 1) microscopically observable slip, 2) subgrain tilting, and 3) grain boundary shearing. Extensive analyses, however, suggest that the high temperature creep of metal polycrystals is controlled by a single thermal activation process."" These somewhat contradictory observations might be reconciled if it could be shown that the activation energies are identical for each of the mechanisms isolated by McLean. Such identity of the activation energies, of course, would demand that the same unit process controls the functioning of each individual mechanism. Under these conditions the activation energies for creep of single metal crystals and polycrystalline aggregates and for grain boundary shearing should be identical. This paper is primarily concerned with the possible identity between the activation energies for high temperature creep of single crystal and polycrystalline metals. In addition, comparisons will also be made between the activation energies for creep of single crystals and polycrystals with previously reported activation energies for grain boundary shearing.0"8 Materials and Techniques The same high purity aluminum, lead, and tin were used in the creep tests for single crystals and polycrystalline aggregates. Single crystals of aluminum and tin were prepared by the strain-anneal technique, whereas lead single crystals were prepared by growth from the melt. The tensile creep stress was maintained constant by Chalmers-Andrade parabolic-type lever arms. Strains were measured to &0.0002 in. per in. with rack and pinion type extensometers, and temperatures were maintained to within & 0.2"C of the reported values by mercury-thermoregulated resistance-heated silicone oil baths. The previously reported unambiguous technique for determination of the activation energy for creep was employed throughout this investigation.' ." It involves periodic abrupt small changes in temperature during the course of creep, accomplished by rapidly replacing one creep bath at temperature TI by a second bath at T,. The abrupt change in creep rate from i, to & attending the abrupt change in temperature is due exclusively to the change in temperature, since both the stress and the substructure are identical the instant before and the instant after a change of temperature. THE chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 c.c. of a solution containing 495 mg. of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative proof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type [R+ + Y- + MX =± RX + M+ + Y¬] where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the massaction and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or Y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (1) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (2) the contact angles1 of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. The energy which causes oil and gas to flow from a reservoir formation into a well depends upon a differential between the formation pressure and the pressure at the well face. This differential pressure may be the result of any one of at least three forces, or a combination of them. Gas under pressure in an oil-producing formation (part of the gas may be in solution and part in contact with the oil) is the principal source of energy for producing oil in most fields. In some fields, however, hydrostatic pressure due to water in contact with the oil and/or the force of gravity may be important factors in causing oil to flow into a well. Still another force affecting oil movement is suggested by some students of the problem; the force dependent upon the phenomenon of capillarity. Hydrostatic pressure is seldom the only source of energy in an oil sand, but it is commonly an adjunct to the compressed gas in the formation. Where this condition prevails, increased production may be obtained provided the water encroachment is properly controlled. In addition to the water-drive effect, the hydrostatic head may tend to maintain pressure in the formation by progressively reducing the volume of the reservoir as withdrawals to the surface are made through the producing wells. The action of the force of gravity on the oil in a formation is of relatively small importance, from an energy standpoint, until the last stage of the productive life of a well is reached. This force is the only remaining natural source of energy in some of the eastern fields, but in most of the deep wells of the Mid-Continent and California districts the force of gravity can be precluded as a source of energy, because the wells reach their economic limit of production before the force of gravity becomes an important factor in moving oil to the wells. Since the majority of fields produce oil chiefly by reason of the gas pressure in the oil horizons, the following treatment deals mainly with factors that influence gas-energy relationships. THE chemistry of clays and shales has been assuming increasing importance in the petroleum industry, and two factors have greatly influenced this trend. The first has been the growing evidence that the marine shales are source beds, and that the petroleum compounds have migrated to the sand reservoirs overlying or underlying these shales: the second has been the demand for drilling, fluids better adapted to penetrate these marine shales without difficulty and expense. ORIGIN AND GENERAL COMPOSITION OF CLAYS AND SHALES Clays, shales and surface soils are all closely related materials. They are mixtures of finely divided compounds formed during the weathering of the solid crust of the earth. Their nature is essentially colloidal; that is, their behavior is determined by the state of division of the materials and the surface reactions of the smallest grains. Many of their chemical changes affect only the exposed areas and do not involve the interior of the grains of matter. The extent of these reactions is more nearly proportional to the area of the substances than to their mass, therefore it is possible for a small. amount of a material in an extremely fine state of division to completely dominate the character of the mixture. More than 83 per cent of the crust of the earth is composed of three elements-oxygen, silicon and aluminum. Consequently, the corrosion products of the crust are predominantly aluminosilicates, or compounds of aluminum, silicon and oxygen. If we add the compounds of six elements-iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and hydrogen-more than 98 per cent of the crust has been accounted for. These six elements, together with the first three, also appear in soils, clays and shales. But direct chemical analysis is of little value in describing the nature of such materials. Many chemical individuals may be present in variable amounts,. and the extreme subdivision of any one of the individuals may contribute qualities that dominate the mixture.

THE molybdenite deposits at Climax, Cool., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the. Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 1412 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. Winter sets in not later than Nov. 1, the snowfall is very heavy, and the ground remains covered with snow until June 1, and sometimes even later. From June 1 to Oct. 1, there is much rain and a little snow falls in the late afternoon nearly every day. In October, 1917, there was one of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards of the year. Being just on the divide, constant strong winds blow the fine, dry snow with such force that, during most of the winter, outside work of any kind -is accomplished under most trying conditions. Within a few miles of Climax, some of the richest gold placers of Colorado occur. One of them, McNulty Gulch, was just across on the northeastern flank of Bartlett mountain. This mountain, therefore; was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulphur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as .early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902; several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 in.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. Gold was not found in paying quantities, but throughout its length the tunnel passed through a fractured silicified granite, showing a fairly uniform distribution of a fine-grained bluish mineral, which was finally determined as molybdenite. When examining a coal property it is customary for the engineer to take channel samples at several coal faces. In doing so the extraneous matter, or partings, which can be removed by hand, or mechanically, with the facilities at hand, or proposed, is rejected. Where there is doubt concerning a stratum it is usually rejected from the main sample but part is taken for separate analysis. The samples are forwarded to a chemist for proximate analyses and determination of British thermal units, and, sometimes, ash fusion. Consideration is given all available commercial analyses but frequently the owner presents only the favorable ones. From the results thus obtained a general evaluation is made, monies are loaned or expended, markets are determined, and realization is estimated. In many instances, such grades are not substantiated and it is time we looked deeper for a basis which will prove more practical. Institute committees are working hard on analytic and use classifications and much valuable information has already been assembled and distributed. However, no single grade can be applied to any particular bed or region. Much study has been given the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, yet that bed is subject to material differences in a single section;i. e., some strata of a face may differ from others in structure and analysis, particularly in sulfur content. From some localities it yields a good carbonization fuel, while in others it is chemically unfit for such use. Traveling south to the Logan, W. Va., field we find the Cedar Grove (Island Creek) seam a hard, gray splint coal., In the same field, and not far distant, the same bed changes, both structurally and chemically, and consists of excellent gas coal. In Illinois the moisture content of a bed may vary greatly in different localities. We have seen mines in which part of the coal is excellent for special purpose use but is spoiled by the product from another part of the same mine. Many other illustrations could be given but these are sufficient to show that application of any grading of coal must be distinctly local. Efficient ventilation of metal mines consists in having such complete control of air currents that there is always supplied at placcs where men work sufficient moving air to allow working at maximum capacity without injury to health; and in case of underground fire or of surface fire in the vicinity of mine openings, underground air currents may be quickly reversed if desired, or air may be sent into or excluded from any region and fire fumes confined to only part of the mine workings, instead of penetrating practically the entire mine. Health and safety of workers in mines as well as proper safeguarding and operating efficiency of mining properties are so intimately associated with proper ventilation of mines (both coal and metal) that they are inseparable, yet ventilation is only too frequently neglected, especial1y in metal mines. The metalliferous operator, generally not confronted with inflammable gas or explosive dust which so frequently force ventilation of coal mines, usually disregards air supply altogether except such as may be obtained from compressed air; and generally, even when attention is given to metal-mine ventilation, the air currents rarely are found where they are needed, namely, the working places, especially the working faces. After several years' study of miners' consumption, the writer is convinced that long continued breathing of air impregnated with large quantities of any kind of finely divided dust, such as is found in a large number of the working places of our mines, will ultimately produce some respiratory disease, whether it be asthma, bronchitis, or phthisis; and the progress of these diseases is hastened if there are also present high temperatures, high humidities, or harmful gases or if there is present (and allowed to remain to be breathed) large quantities of the finely divided dust when air temperatures are low, hence favorable to maximum performance of work with accompanied maximum breathing into the respiratory passages of the harmful material. INTRODUCTORY. THE presentation to the Institute, eight years ago, of the paper of Pošepny on " The Genesis of Ore-Deposits " has borne fruit in much fresh: investigation, as is evidenced, for example, by the group of very valuable papers, by distinguished members" of the United States Geological Survey, read at the Washington meeting-discussions of general principles particularly suggestive to those who are engaged in mining. Pošepny, in the discussion of his famous treatise, said that the present writer seemed to look at every new conception in ore-deposition" from the sole standpoint of its immediate usefulness in mining."* Protesting mildly against " sole " and "immediate," I accept the impeachment. It calls for no defence. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECENT THEORIES. Given the idea of an underground water-circulation as the chief factor in the deposition of ore, the next step in the inquiry as to the genesis of such deposits is, the endeavor to determine which particular part of the general water-circulation is responsible for the results. Around this question have centered the controversies of a generation, and to these controversies we owe the gradual clarification of our ideas upon the processes of ore-formation. It is unnecessary to sketch here their progress from Werner to Le Conte, who combated in 1883 the extreme views of the lateral-seeretionists, and in 1893 opposed the narrow interpretation of the ascensionist-theory. The generally accepted opinions of to-day are a well-deserved tribute to his philosophic discrimination. IN THE copper-casting department of a modern electrolytic copper refinery there are two kinds of casting furnaces: the first, or anode furnace for casting crude copper into anodes for electrolysis; the second, or refined-copper furnace for casting the cathodes resulting from electrolysis into market shapes, such as ingots, wire bars, and cakes. Both furnaces are reverberatories of practically the same general design and are operated intermittently, putting through a charge normally in 24 hours. The treatment of the copper in both furnaces is similar, in so far that oxidation followed by skimming and reduction (poling) is carried on in both; but in the refined-copper furnace, the work must be done with greater care and it is of extreme importance that not the slightest trace of impurity be introduced into the copper. The furnaces usually hold from 150 to 300 tons of molten copper, which constitutes the daily charge. Except in the case of furnaces in the Lake district, where the concentrates from native-copper ores are charged through the roof, the furnaces are charged through the side doors by charging machines similar to those used in open-hearth steel practice. In 1916, at the Perth Amboy plant, of the American Smelting & Refining Co., located at Maurer, N. J., a study was made of the possibility of firing the copper refinery furnaces with pulverized coal instead of by hand. The proposed method possessed obvious advantages over hand firing and coal was a much cheaper fuel than oil at that time. It was realized, however, that there were several objections to its use, the principal ones being the liability of increasing the sulfur content of the refined copper, and the additional slag that might be produced from the ash. The increase of the sulfur content of the refined copper was the more serious, as more than 0.002 per cent. sulfur is objectionable. In the case of the slag, any increase would be expensive as the copper in this slag would have to pass again through the entire smelting and refining process.

The ventilation of metal mines is becoming more of a fundamental requirement than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. There are many reasons for this, and in general they are based on economy or efficiency rather than health or safety, yet the latter enters into the picture in at least some instances. One Montana metal mine which had installed mine fans and a general ventilating system shut down the fan when there was a period of cessation of work; within a few weeks it was found that the underground timbers were becoming so covered with fungus that the fans were put into operation and thereafter continued in operation whether the mine was worked or not. The fungus soon disappeared and the cost of operating the fans was held to be far less than would be the numerous losses from timber decay which quickly started when cessation of air flow was encountered. A large iron ore mine in Michigan had much difficulty in holding men in a slicing region due to foul air under certain surface conditions as to direction of wind. Upon the placing of a moderate sized fan on the surface with some doors, stoppings and regulators underground, not only was the bad air condition removed but there was found to be a decided increase of tonnage per man per shift and timber decay was retarded to a very considerable extent. This particular mining company was rather inclined to be angry when I called attention to some of the what I considered very bad working conditions underground, and the mine superintendent for about a year and a half was on anything but friendly terms with me. Later on when the effect of the placing of the fan was found (the fan had been placed over his protest), that, man came through very nicely with a letter and congratulated me on the recommendation made and congratulated himself and the company on the conditions obtained after the installation of the fan. DORSEY HAGER, Tulsa, Okla.-I have been asked why the Dexter region is dry. I would like to know myself. I drilled two dry wells on that same anticline which has production to, the east and west and south and north. That same anticline has seven domes that have been drilled and only three have proven productive out of the seven. In other words, you have one well-defined anticline with seven domes along its length, all mappable, all checked carefully, and only three of those seven have produced. Now why the others did not produce, I do not know. L. L. HUTCHISON, Tulsa, Okla.-There is no appreciable difference in the character or structure of the sands? DORSEY HAGER.-NO, I have never .been able to see any appreciable difference in the sands where we got production and Where we did not get it. I will say that the deepest wells we drilled, in the vicinity of Dexter, had no sands at the point where they got the production farther north. I. N. -KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-I first went to the Kansas-Oklahoma field in 1895 and occasionally thereafter until 1899, when I began drilling; for oil. I started close to wells that were producing gas and which, when drilling, lead made good oil showings in a sand above the gas. I thought these showings were good enough evidence of an oil pool for me without looking for any anticline and I made a paying development in what' I was afterward told by geologists was probably a synclinal trough. If I remember correctly Dr. Orton's report on the lola gas pool (about 1898) he distinctly said that he found no evidence of anticlinal structure and concluded from the records of a large number of wells that there, was a terraced structure of the productive gas sands, of which there were no surface indications.

THE West Indies are the summits of a submerged, mountain chain, the continuation of which must be sought in the mountains of central Honduras. In Haiti, the chain divides, one branch passing through Jamaica and the other through Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Misteriosa bank. Suess divides the West Indies into three zones: The first zone is entirely of volcanic origin and includes many recent volcanic cones. It includes the arcùate string of islands, which extends from Saba and St. Kitts to the Grenadines and Grenada. The western half of Guadeloupe belongs to this group. The second zone consists of a geanticline, of which the sedimentary rocks range from the Jurassic to the Quaternary, but consist chiefly of Lower Tertiary sediments. In the west it is broad, including the whole of the Greater Antilles; but in the east it is restricted to a narrow belt, which includes the Virgin Islands (except Anegada), Anguilla, St. Bartholomew, Antigua, the eastern part of Guadeloupe and part of Barbados. The islands that compose the third zone are flat and low. Like the second, this zone is broad in the west and narrow in the east; it includes the Bahamas, Anegada, Sombrero, Barbuda, and part of Barbados. Geologically, Florida and the plain of Yucatan may be regarded as belonging to it. Trinidad and Tobago, though-geographically adjacent to the Lesser Antilles, are geologically a detached part of the South American continent. The crystalline complexes of northern Trinidad and of Barbados are a continuation, en echelon, of the crystalline axis of the promontory of Paria. The folded Cretaceous and Tertiary of the central and southern parts of Trinidad represent a continuation of the folded sediments of the Paria district of Venezuela.

Deeper drilling, resulting in greater circulating distance and pressure, has directed attention to the advantages of the study of properties and control of rotary muds, which until recently have not had much consideration. One fundamental property of muds is viscosity, and viscosity is influenced by the quantity and character of colloidal material and can be controlled by chemical treatment. Colloidal Matter of Rotary Muds Two types of colloids are found in muds; the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic. Hydrophobic colloids do not associate intimately with water and are sensitive to small quantities of electrolytes. Hydrophilic colloids associate intimately with water, but are not so sensitive to electrolytes. The colloidal particles of rotary muds are derived from clay; In clay the particles may range in size from submicroscopic to macroscopic; a substance is a clay if the greater proportion of the particles are within the size limits prescribed for clay. The larger particles are inert and have no effect on the viscosity of normal hydrophobic colloidal muds. There are two theories accounting for the colloidal properties of clay-water suspensions: (1) the physical theory, that clay in water is a coarse colloidal suspension, and (2) Ashley's1 theory, that clay is a granular material with a colloidal gel surrounding the crystalline grains. The most important colloidal substances known to exist in clays besides the clay particles are: (1) colloidal silica, (2) colloidal alumina, (3) colloidal ferric hydroxide, (4) colloidal silicates, and (5) colloidal organic matter. Plasticity, a peculiar property of clay-water suspensions, is due to the colloidal particles. Mineral exploration in the United States relies heavily on theoretical geologic concepts and indirect methods such as geophysics and geochemical prospecting, as there are few exposed areas of mineralization which have not already been explored. In Mexico, ore grade samples can be cut at the surface on vein, replacement, and disseminated types of deposits in many areas. The problem is not in finding a mineralized area but in deciding which mineralized area can be explored and developed at the least risk and cost, with the greatest profit potential within the framework of Mexican mineral economics and that nation's government policies. Socio-economic Posture Mexico, prior to World War II, had suffered from more than one hundred years of intermittent wars and exploitation by internal and foreign elements. Consequently, the basic facilities which today's society takes for granted were scarce or non-existent in most of the country. Travel was largely a matter of negotiating poor dirt roads, riding horseback or walking. Relatively few people were literate and medical facilities were luxuries for the wealthy. Mexico's leaders were, however, determined to improve the lot of their people, within a system of private enterprise and personal freedom. Long-range programs initiated at about the time of World War II to provide infrastructure-education, health and welfare, transportation, power, water, communication-are now established fully or in part for most of the country and are being continually expanded.

An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. Recent work5 has substantiated these findings and the distribution functions of several materials ground under different conditions in different mills have been determined experimentally. In speaking of the economic geology of southeastern Ontario, W. G. Miller and C. W. Knight1 say that "there occurs in southeastern Ontario a variety of minerals and rocks of economic value, probably as great as in any district of like size on the North American continent. Some of these deposits, including marble and trap, are inexhaustible. Others, including talc and iron pyrites, have proved to be of considerable economic importance. From time to time, during the last 50 years, the following minerals and rocks have been mined or quarried with varying success: gold, iron pyrites, zinc blende, copper pyrites, galena, mispickel, magnetite, hematite, talc, actinolite, mica, marble, ophicalcite, feldspar, fluorite, apatite, corundum, graphite and sodalite. All of the economic materials, with, the exception of fluorite, appear to be of pre-Cambrian age. The fluorite veins penetrate the Ordovician, Black River, limestone." Accompanying that report was an article by the writer on the Queens-boro Pyrite Area which includes one of the two working pyrite properties in southeastern Ontario. In the present paper will be given a brief description2 of all the known pyrite deposits in the area which may at some time possess an economic value, with fuller descriptions of the two working mines—The Canadian Sulphur Ore C,o.'s mine near Queensboro, and the Nichols Chemical Co.'s property at Sulphide. Having brought with me to this meeting a couple of "Mitis'' wrought-iron castings, I have found that they attracted a great deal of attention from steel manufacturers, and especially from those experienced in making castings, among whom some have said that they felt inclined to "unhesitatingly dcclare their manufacture an impossibility," if they had not seen the samples. The consequent demand for explanation of the method of manufacture has been SO great that I accept with pleasure the request by the President to address the meeting on the subject. My object in this address shall be only to explain the main features of the manufacture, referring those who take more interest in the matter to Mr. Th. Nordenfelt's paper, read before the British Iron and Steel Institute, reprinted in many American papers, and containing both a historical sketch of the inventions and many interesting details. As the manufacture of castings from steel by others is, at least to some extent, a success, I shall, in my explanations hereafter, refer to wronght-iron, although our mode of manufacture is equally applicable, with corresponding advantage, to steel of any temper. The successful manufacture of castings depends upon several very important matters, besides the necessary skill of the workman. You must have a suitable metal as raw material; you must have an eacient and suitable furnace for smelting, so as not to injure the metal; you must be able to handle the metal in a suitable way, from the time it is ready in the furnace until it is poured into the moulds; you must have a suitable moulding material. DURING the past decade, methods of producing bituminous coal in the State of Illinois, which ranks third in production among the states in which bituminous coal is mined, have undergone great changes. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of pro-duction by various methods in the State of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties.
