It has long been known to boiler makers and to the users of cylindrical pipes of many kinds that when a tube is exposed to internal fluid pressure the resolution of forces is such that the material of the walls of the tube is exposed to twice the stress in the direction tending to produce longitudinal rupture, as it is in the direction to produce circumferential fracture. By longitudinal fracture is meant the fracture by a rent parallel to the axis; by circumferential fracture is meant fracture by rents running round the cylinder. In consequence of this the makers of boilers always lay the fibre of their metal in direction round the boiler, and the same is true with the makers of gun-barrels. I have never seen any good and simple illustration of this law until I met with it in blowing glass. If a thin bubble of glass be blown out in a spherical form and then exploded it will be found that the particles tumble into totally irregular shapes, showing no special direction in the molecular structure of the material. If now a bubble of glass be blown out and so manipulated that it will take a cylindrical form (see accompanying illustration), and then be exploded, it will drop into ribbon-shaped pieces from end to end, and the only parts that will be found to differ from this form will be the two hemispherical ends which will remain whole, having a fringe of ribbons representing the line of their fracture from the cylinder. It docs not seem to be generally known that some American pig-irons contain notable amounts of vanadium, and while the present investigation is far from covering the whole range of irons, it is hoped that, at least, it may serve to call attention to the importance of looking for this element. The majority of the pig-irons investigated were made in the Lehigh Valley and neighboring furnaces, using more or less New Jersey magnetite in their mixtures. Many of these ores, and probably all of them, contain a little vanadium as well as titanium; the ore from one of the largest of these mines contains 0.05 per cent, of vanadium and 0.60 per cent. of titanium. Dr. Thomas M. Drown was the first to detect the presence of vanadium in the incrustations1 occurring on certain pig-irons, and he also found this element in a number of magnetites, but the methods for its accurate determination had not, at that time, been well worked out. In a general way, it may be said that the Lehigh Valley pig-irons contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and from 0.10 to 0.20 per cent. of titanium. INTRODUCTION The primary tool which is available to improve the stability of an open pit mine at a given slope angle is control of groundwater pressure. This paper sets out the methods by which water pressure control can be achieved in large mines in different materials. The emphasis of this paper is on large mine slopes because. these slopes exhibit the greatest need for groundwater control, the greatest economic benefit from groundwater control, and the greatest technical challenge in achieving groundwater control. STABILIZATION USING MTER PRESSURE CONTROL Groundwater pressures reduce the stability of slopes in two fundamental ways, as shown schematically in Figure 1. In the example, a horizontal failure surface intersects a vertical joint or weak zone. Water pressure acts: o On the base plane to reduce the normal force on the sliding surface and hence reduce frictional resistance to sliding, and o On the vertical back plane, to create a driving force for the system.

For more than 100 years, British Columbia has been considered a mountainous mining province, rich with potential but relatively poor in actual production. Times have changed. Today, Japanese interests and money have altered the difficult, if not once impossible, economic conditions and market factors which until recently precluded any great growth of the British Columbia mineral industry. The mining boom now underway in British Columbia has carried the total value of mineral production in the Province to a record height in 1962 as it rang up a 27% increase over that of 1961. Breaking the $200 million barrier for the first time, total value of British Columbia's mineral output reached $229- 276,385. Of this amount, metals accounted for 70%; industrial minerals, 6 %; structural materials, 9 %; and fuels, 15%. The substantial increase is attributed to the record production of copper, iron, asbestos, natural gas and petroleum, in addition to the continuing high production rate and favorable prices of other mineral commodities.

ANALYTICAL calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/3 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in,, regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings.

THE tensile and notch tensile ductile-to-brittle transition characteristics of several refractory metals and alloys have been well documented.1-3 Electron-beam melted tantalum and columbium have been shown to retain excellent ductility at very low temperatures. Some indications of brittle behavior (low ductility and cleavage fracture) were observed with columbium tested at -253oC, but no similar effects were noticed with tantalum. Increasing the interstitial oxygen content in these two materials resulted in the detection of indications of brittle behavior at higher temperatures, although good ductility was retained in both bases at -196°C when they contained about 1 at. pet 0. Detailed descriptions of the impact transition behavior of these two materials at various purity levels have not been available. This technical note describes the effect of interstitial oxygen on the impact properties of wrought, fibered tantalum and columbium and compares the transition behavior to the previously determined tensile transition characteristics. Tantalum and columbium impact specimens with three different interstitial oxygen levels indicated in Table I were tested at temperatures ranging from -196o to 300°C. Oxygen additions were made to 1/2-in.-diam bars of electron-beam melted material in a Seiverts Apparatus. Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. THE petroleum industry in Indiana made no extraordinary progress during the year 1924. The surplus stock of crude, brought about by the production of 732,407,000 bbl. in the United States in 1923, as against a production of 557,531,000 bbl. in 1922, had its effect on prices though there were slight advances. These advances were more than offset by the continued high prices of labor and materials. TRENTON OIL DEVELOPMENT The principal development of the year occurred in the Hotmire pool of the Ridgeville district in northeastern Indiana. This pool lies partly in the southern part of Jay County and partly in the northern part of Randolph County. The oil is obtained from the upper horizon of the Trenton. During the past year, about 30 wells were drilled, 21 of which were productive. An attempt to extend the Hotmire pool to the northeast resulted in the discovery of a gas-producing area near the center of Pike township in Jay County; 10 wells have been drilled 4 of which produced oil. The Harvey Orr No. 1 produced 900,000 cu. ft. of gas per day.

Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum products and related fuels in 1937 shattered previous records with a figure of 1,920,000,000 bbl.; that is, 124,000,000 bbl. more than the 1936 total. The writers, as in previous years, have been unable to account for all the available supply in 1937. This "unaccounted-for" supply, which formerly was thought to go largely into storage in foreign countries, was close to 53,000,000 bbl. in 1933; 93,000,000 in 1934; 111,000,000 in 1935; 75,000,000 in 1936 and 148,000,000 in 1937. As this discrepancy between supply and demand continued year after year, it became evident that other reasons than additional foreign stocks were responsible for it. It can now be stated that the "unaccounted-for" supply (see Table 1) goes to take care of: (1) consumption of petroleum products and related fuels for military purposes, the figures of which have been and are kept confidential by foreign countries, (2) additions to stocks to be consumed for military and nonmilitary purposes in foreign countries on which likewise no information is available, (3) errors incurred in the conversion of figures of production of crude oil, its products and related fuels from "weight" units, as used in Russia, for instance, to their American or "volume" equivalents and vice versa, and (4) to the lack of reliable statistics on production and consumption, particularly from Russia, the

Chemical mining may be defined as the use of chemicals in extracting metal values from in situ broken or unbroken ores within a mine. The present means for the generation and regeneration of sulfuric acid or sulfuric-ferric sulfate solutions are inadequate for most applications. This report describes a pressure oxidation process for the generation and regeneration of these solutions from pyrites and spent iron sulfate leach liquors. While recent mining developments such as solution injection, caving, and conventional and nuclear blasting, have provided new and better means for the per-colation of leach solutions through rock masses, little has been done to reduce cost and improve the quality of the leach solutions that are required. A leach solution for chemical mining should meet certain requirements. It should be 1) inexpensive on either a small or large tonnage basis, 2) capable of selectively leaching the desired ore minerals contained in a particular ore, 3) of the proper strength or quality to do the job of leaching in an underground environment and 4) amendable to simple and inexpensive metal recovery steps. It is also important that the capital investment be low for the solution generation and; or regeneration plant.

The Puget Sound Section met at the Arctic Club, Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 20, 1917. Sixteen members and five guests were present. Dinner having been served, the meeting was called to order. A letter from secretary of Associated Engineering Societies was read, requesting payment of this section's assessment to the quarterly budget, and upon motion it was voted that the Secretary-Treasurer be instructed to pay this assessment. It was moved and carried that this section join with the Chemical Society in a meeting. At the, close of the business meeting, Mr. Asa C. Baldwin gave an illustrated lecture on the "Alaska Boundary Survey." On Feb. 24, the Puget Sound Section again held a meeting at the Arctic Club, 16 members and three guests being present. Chester F. Lee, as member of a committee representing this section in the joint council of the Associated Engineering Societies, reported that by lots it had been decided that the term of service of said committee would be as follows: Chester F. Lee, two years; George. Watkin Evans, one year. Following adjournment of the business meeting, Prof. Joseph Daniels, of the University of Washington, delivered a very interesting lecture on "Milling Practice of The Alaska-Castineau Mining Company." THIS paper deals with the results of a study of the application and development of mining machines for cutting out and removing dirt bands in bituminous coal beds. FACE PREPARATION When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of complete-ness to which these impurities are removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miner is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation.

The Bedded Crack Model (BCM) is a constitutive model for brittle materials. It is based on effective modulus theory and makes use of a generalized Griffith criterion for crack growth. It is used in a solid dynamic computer code to simulate stress wave propagation and fracture in rock. A general description of the model is given and then the theoretical basis for it is presented. Some effects of finite cell size in numerical simulations are discussed. The use of the BCM is illustrated in simulations of explosive fracture of oil shale. There is generally good agreement between the calculations and data from field experiments.

New equipment for seabed sampling, presently at the prototype stage, operates on the principle of diamond core drilling with wire line core barrels and is designed to drill cores from the seabed at depths down to 200 m with a continuous recovery of cores from an attendant vessel. The machine operates on the seabed by remote control from a console on the vessel. Neither installation nor operation requires the use of divers. Principal Applications Principal areas of application for the drill which is dubbed Maricor include investigation drilling in the continental shelf, mapping geological conditions before large drilling platforms are installed and exploring proposed undersea tunnel routes.

The total production of petroleum in the Gulf Coast in 1927 was 54.541.180 bbl., .5.655.665 bbl. more than in 1926. The Texas total was 49.129.910 bbl. (Table 1) and the Louisiana tota1 5.411.270 bbl. (Table 2). Louisiana production decreased 278.028 bbl., compared with that of 1926. Spindletop produced nearly 44 per cent. of the Texas total. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company's furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania.

Worldwide manpower utilization reached a new high at 10,482 professional man-months and expenditures increased to $19.9 million for mining geophysical activity during 1965. This is up from 9323 man-months and $14.5 million in 1964. Worldwide geophysical activity measured in percent distribution of the total manpower utilization and expenditures is presented in the accompanying Figs. 1 and 2. In terms of the total manpower utilization, ground surveys accounted for 61%, airborne surveys 18%, and mining geophysical research activity 21%. For expenditures, the breakdown was ground surveys, 49%; airborne surveys, 3901o; and research, 12%. Industry was responsible in general for 74% of the manpower utilization and 80% of the expenditures. Manpower costs in 1965 averaged $1900 per professional man-month.
