A remarkably simple construction system that derives its internal stability from metal straps buried in backfill is finding diverse mine applications, ranging from rock crusher headwalls to massive slot coal storage facilities. Reinforced Earth (Re/Earth), the system trade name of Reinforced Earth Co., is proving itself 20-50% less expensive than alternative earth embankment structures, and in the case of cast-in-place concrete walls, six to seven times faster to erect. While the majority of applications are in the realm of civil engineering-projects such as retaining walls, bridge abutments, slide buttresses, and containment dikes-a growing proportion is mine related. Of the estimated 120 Reinforced Earth projects that will be completed this year, company president David P. McKittrick expects mining to account for about 20% of the business volume.

A population balance model accounting for the transient variations in drop size distributions in a stirred liquid-liquid system is analyzed for its effect on chemical reaction conversion in a stirred, batch reactor. The analysis is applied specifically for phase transfer catalytic reactions, which indicates that transient effects of evolution of drop size distributions may be important in such systems.

Of the elements found in iron and steel, none has attracted more attention than phosphorus. It is considered the great enemy of the steel manufacturer-, and the chief aim has been and is to keep it out by using pure crude material, or when once in, to eliminate it or counteract its effect. LUTHER B. EAMES, Pueblo, Colo. (written discussion*).-In reading Mr. North's interesting paper, several points have been noted that appear to warrant discussion. With a feed all through 20 mesh, I feel inclined to question the use of steel balls as large as 2 in. in a tube mill. I have seen balls as small as-3/4 in. used for the dry grinding of cement clinker, and surely many more points of contact would result from smaller balls. This would seem to be desirable in a mill as short as 6 ft. The heavy load in the classifiers would also indicate a high proportion of returned pulp. I hope that some discussion by Mr. North -and others may develop this point. The flow sheet on page 1181 shows the solution returning from the dam valued at 40 c. per ton being added to the last decantation tank. Theoretically, this solution should not be added to that of a lower value. As I calculate it, if this solution were added to tank X the solution finally discharged from tank Z would be reduced in value by nearly 4 c. per ton.

From our previous work (Gardner, Aissa, and Verghese, 1982) on determining the residence time distribution of ball mi 11s from radiotracer data taken in closed-circuit operation without interruption of the process, it occurred to us that the data taken for this purpose also contained information on the breakage rates of all the sizes present. It is the purpose of the present work to evaluate methods to obtain breakage rates from this data. A numerical solution for the impulse injection and subsequent detection of radiotracer in a closed-circuit linear comminution process is developed and used with typical breakage parameters, residence time distribution, and classifier functions to study and evaluate these methods.

THE gravity concentrator of the Hecla Mining Co. was originally constructed in 1888 by the Milwaukee Mining Co., which was operating the Gem of the Mountains mine. It was purchased by the Hecla Mining Co. in 1900, and placed in operation 2 years later. At that time [ ] the capacity was only about 200 tons a day, but many additions and changes in equipment have been made so that the present capacity is about 800 tons. Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples.

The Albion phosphate-district embraces a territory about 4 miles wide and 6 miles long, in a northerly and southerly direction, situated in Levy county, Florida. The Florida Central and Peninsular railroad, running from Fernandina, a shipping port on the Atlantic, to Cedar Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico, passes through the center of the district. The post-office and railroad station is in the town of Albion. The physical features of the district present a series of white aqd whitish-gray sand-hills and ridges, rising about 130 feet above tide-water. The sand lies in a loose body, like that seen on the ocean beaches. In places the hills have the appearance of sand-dunes, such as are seen along the Platte river, in Nebraska. Beneath the sand are found the phosphate-deposits, which are partially exposed in places, but, for the most part, lie buried to a depth of 15 feet and more. In this district the phosphate is designated as " hard rock,"

THE title of this article is descriptive, but not complete, for psychological evaluation is almost as important as rigid economic evaluation. This refers to those human traits that cause people to be too optimistic about the projects they are sponsoring, to overlook obvious weaknesses, to base decisions on incomplete and inaccurate data, and to gloss over embarrassing problems. Investment of capital in a new industrial mineral project is warranted only after rigorous economic analyses based on unquestionable facts. A plunge into production cannot be justified solely because these minerals have been deposited in the ground and are therefore free. There are no specially favorable economic laws that make the business of industrial minerals more attractive than any other. The factors of supply and demand, marketing, technological changes, taxes, competition, and fluctuating prices apply as much to industrial minerals as to other business enterprises. What is more, industrial minerals are subject to the higher risks that all mining enterprises face.

Relative fineness is an important characteristic of iron ore balling feeds. It is frequently expressed in terms of the Blaine Number which is determined by standardized permeametry procedures. Inconsistencies in Blaine Number specifications for balling feeds from different sources prompted an investigation of permeability methods. A revised procedure for permeametry tests was developed for use with conventional apparatus that yields an Effective Blaine Number which is similar to the Standard Blaine Number except that it more accurately describes the effective fineness of the actual test sample.

The physical arrangement of the continuous casting facilities at Algoma have been described a number of times in previous papers. For the purposes of this discussion, it is sufficient to state that the casting plant is located at a considerable distance from the basic oxygen shop which supplies it, involving a relatively lengthy ladle transfer movement. (Fig. I) The handling of the ladle by two separate cranes, first to the argon station, and thence to the casting machines, results in an average interval, from start tap to start cast, of 45 minutes. The effects of such extended retention time on temperature control and on refractory performance are well known. Tapping temperatures well above normal are necessary to insure that the ensuing heat losses do not result in an undue incidence of premature tundish freeze-offs. The heat lost, as well as being a function of the retention time, becomes more critical with smaller ladle size; winter temperatures add to the problem with their effect in chilling ladles and increasing radiant losses.

Shortwall mining represents a compromise between the room-and-pillar and longwall systems. Figure 1 shows that the shortwall layout is very similar to that for longwall panels, the primary difference being that the shortwall is generally 150 to 200 feet wide while longwalls are 350 to 600 feet wide. The development of entries is divorced from the production of the walls with both systems. However, the depth of the web is considerably different in the shortwall system. Because a standard continuous miner is employed, a depth of 10 feet is normally mined on a single pass. This greater web thickness requires the use of a specially constructed support that can support the much longer cantilever bar that must extend over the working area. This is accomplished by not only increasing the length of the bar but also strengthening it structurally; however, the key to success lies in articulating the cantilever from the base and supporting it with a short hydraulic jack leg. This arrangement provides the additional strength required in the support. It should be apparent that a shortwall support is more costly than the type used for longwall.

(written discussion *).-The matter of selective. mining is probably of more importance in Pennsylvania than is washing, and perhaps washing would not be necessary at some plants where now practised if proper care were taken in the mining. I have in mind one plant where the sulfur content of the entire bed is more than 2 per cent., yet if the bottom 12 in. and the top 12 or 15 in. are separated, the main portion of the bed, some 6 ft., will not contain more than 1.25 per cent. sulfur; and yet in this mine the entire bed .is worked together, the resultant coke, as a matter of course, not being fit for use in iron smelting. Not sufficient notice is taken of the "Double-thick" Upper Freeport coal in Allegheny and Butler counties. This is a very valuable deposit. Other areas where there is a, top member of the Upper Freeport coal are also known, which add to the value of this bed as a coking coal. This double Freeport coal is especially suited for byproduct coking. I cannot be as optimistic as regards the "low-sulfur" Pittsburgh coal in Greene county as the authors. An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

Crushing and grinding of gypsum demands con- trolled processing to a fineness suitable for further treatment of the mineral into end products, and into various sizes of material which are themselves saleable products. The majority of gypsum tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for wallboard. Therefore, mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off intermediate products to meet various customer requirements. This forces companies into compromises at times in equipment installations. Normally, 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product are marketed and these are generally the fineness of material to be used as stucco for wallboard. These sizes are produced by controlled crushing, grinding and sizing. How Ore Characteristics Guide Processing First, gypsum as a mineral (CaS0;2H,O) is number two on the Mohs scale two of hardness; only talc is softer, Despite being soft, gypsum is tough, a factor which is of critical importance when developing equipment specifications. In addition, of the increasing volumes of rock handled, the associated and included impurities such as anhydrite, silica or lime- stones are found to be relatively abrasive.

The ideas set forth in this paper are proposed for consideration and discussion as the result of recent study of various plans for control and proration of gas and oil production from Kettleman North Dome oil field. They would be applicable to any oil field during its flush production stage. Many are of the opinion that Kettleman North Dome oil field should be considered as containing only one zone to its present total penetrated thickness of nearly 1500 ft., and that the hydrocarbon content of this zone gradually changes from dark and relatively low-gravity oil with relatively low gas-oil ratios on the flanks and plunges to mostly light-colored and high-gravity oil with high gas-oil ratios in the higher structural positions, somewhat according to the idealized section shown in Fig. 1. At least the lower 400 ft. contains dark oil in the higher structural positions.

Zinc sinter plant fume is roasted to selectively sulfate the cadmium. Water leaching of the roasted fume recovers about 80% of the contained cadmium and produces solutions containing about 40 grams per liter cadmium and 10 grams per liter zinc. The solution is treated with sodium bichromate for lead removal. Cadmium sponge, precipitated with zinc dust, is briquetted, melted, and cast into commercial shapes. The residue from the water leach is acid leached with waste acid, solubilizing the zinc and residual cadmium. Impure cadmium sponge, precipitated with zinc dust, is separated from solution with cyclones and dewatered in a centrifuge. Air-oxidation- acid leaching of the impure sponge resolubilizes the cadmium. The resulting solution is neutralized, clarified, and treated for cadmium recovery with the water leach solution. The residue from the leached fume is water-washed and recovered in a centrifuge-thickener circuit. This residue contains lead sulfate and significant quantities of gold and silver. Manpower requirements are held to a minimum by automating operations within the Leach Plant.
