Soluble sodium silicate materials have well known applications in flotation for desliming, selective depression and corrosion control. Recent advances in the understanding of the complex polymeric nature of silicate solutions using NMR spectroscopy, combined with our studies of the effects of polymeric silicate anions on metal ion activities in solution, oxide mineral surface charges and surfactant adsorption on clays are related to beneficiation processes. The results of these studies indicate the sodium silicates can be used to cause a solution chemistry and particle surface charge characteristics favorable to enhanced effectiveness in typical ore beneficiation systems.

Burgess and Merica.1 The present paper gives information of much value in con-nection with the manufacture and inspection of fusible boiler plugs, and the investigation of the cooling curves of tin with various other metals close to the tin side of the diagram is very interesting. These curves corroborate in all cases, except that of antimony, the diagrams given by other investigators. The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors again sends out this recommendation: If you have an air compressor that is mounted directly on the air tank, get it off. Characteristically, small- to intermediate-sized air receivers are thin-walled vessels, and as such are prone to failure when subjected to external loading. Many of these vessels, if not a great majority, are bought by a distributor of air compressor systems, who provides the compressor, motor, switchgear and other accoutrements-all of which are very frequently mounted on a base which is then welded to the shell of the receiver. These welds at the points of attachment transmit external loading to the tank in the form of weight and vibration, frequently resulting in stress-induced cracks.

Herbert Moore Harbach was born in Lebanon, Pa., Apr. 4, 1891, graduated from the Lebanon High School in 1911, and entered State College, from which he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1915. He was employed by the Lackawanna Iron Co., at Buffalo, N. Y., and was later transferred 'to their Lebanon plant to start up the newly erected benzol plant. He was later made foreman of the coke ovens, which position he held after it was bought by the Bethlehem Steel Co., and until he enlisted in the service of his country in September, 1917. He was stationed at Camp Meade, Md., until the spring of 1918, when he was transferred to the C. W. S., at Niagara Falls, as an expert chemist. More economical methods of rock disintegration are needed for mining and for rapid excavation. Two major systems are drill and blast and mechanical excavation, including tunnel-boring machines. Current drill and blast methods are cyclic and there- fore limited in speed of operation. Boring machines are limited to moderately hard rock due to bearing and cutter wear. The recent development of ANFO, which has reduced blasting costs markedly, was largely fortuitous because of the method of manufacturing AN prills. New slurries and fluid explosives are easy to load and have high energy-pressure characteristics.

Using an adsorption-column technique the partition of dodecylamine between quartz and water has been determined at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 4000 mg per liter. The adsorption varies as the square root of the concentration. Attachment of dodecylamine to quartz is reversible. The amount adsorbed in a flotation operation giving almost complete recovery is under 5 pct of the amount required for a monolayer.

The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.

The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and low reagent cost.

Sandvik (Mining Engineer, Mineral Dressing Laboratory, Technical University of Norway, Trond-heim, Norway) — The discovery that adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces is influenced by adsorption at other interfaces may prove very fruitful in the further development of flotation theory. Having reached the same conclusions as P. Somasundaran in some experiments with amine hydrochlorides, I would like to offer more direct evidence of the interfacial adsorption mechanism based on surface tension measurements and adsorption studies.' This evidence was derived from flotation tests carried out in a Hallimond tube at neutral pH and 60°C. Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.

VARIOUS organic compounds, such as borneol, carbon tetr a bromide, and hexachloroethane, solidify as transparent plastics with a fcc structure. Each of these substances undergoes a solid-state transformation from the plastic phase to a brittle phase at temperatures slightly above 20°C. Since it was known that these plastic crystals solidified like metals,1 it was decided to investigate the possibility that solid-state grain growth would occur in the same way as it does in metals. Two-dimensional grain growth in thin films of plastic organic compounds has been studied with the aid of cinemicrophotography. Samples varying in thickness between 250 and 1000 @ were prepared by subliming a thin layer of the compound onto a microscope slide plate which was then covered with a second slide plate.

Theodore Dehon Rand was appointed Treasurer of the American Institute of Mining Engineers by the Council, at the Boston meeting of February, 1873, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of the treasurer who had been elected at the first meeting in Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871. He was elected by the Institute to this offce in the following May, and yearly thereafter until 1903. In the course of annealing studies on molybdenum, it has been observed that a carbide precipitates preferentially on internal and external surfaces. The evidence for this is as follows. Electropolished bend specimens prepared from two grades of commercial molybdenum were loaded in a closed but unsealed tantalum can, and were annealed for 1 hr at 2000°C under a vacuum of 1 x 10-4 torr. The compositions of these materials are summarized in Table I. The samples were then slowly cooled at an average rate of 10°C per min, and were examined when cool. The surfaces of specimens prepared from Molybdenum A were consis- tently clean and featureless, except for thermally etched grain boundaries, see Fig, l(a). On the other hand, Molybdenum B had surfaces containing many needle- and featherlike markings, see Fig. l(b). These features were present in all surface grains, and within a given grain belonged to families

DURING the wartime rush to prepare the glass necessary for the needs of our army and navy, the problem of the temperature control of the annealing kilns became most serious. The narrow limits of strain allowable (all the specifications called for less internal strain than the average of the previously used German glass) made necessary a very exact procedure and the methods had to be used on a much larger scale than theretofore. At the Charleroi plant of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., the members of the staff of the Geophysical Laboratory, which was cooperating with the company, had occasion to study the methods available, and reached a number of conclusions (many of them by no means new except in their application) that may interest and assist those who have to meet similar problems in other fields. The following is a short account of the essential features of the system of temperature control evolved, along with a rather abridged statement of the reasons that led to the adoption or rejection of various schemes.

The adsorption density of dodecylammonium ions at the quartz-solution interface has been Theadsorptiondensitydetermined as a function of collector concentration and pH. A ten thoushasbeenandfold range of amine salt concentration was covered at neutral pH. Experimental results show that over a thousandfold concentration range at neutral pH, the adsorption density (I) is proportional to the square root of collector concentration. Except at high concentrations, I increases with increases with increasing pH, but in general this effect is surprisingly small. . , . . A critical pH curve has been established for the flotation of quartz with dodecylammonium acetate. The conditions along the flotation curve are correlated with the adsorption measurements. THE behavior of collectors at the mineral-solution interfaces is usually explained in terms of an ionic adsorption process. Through the distribution of collector ions between the solid surface and the- co-existing solution phase the mineral is believed to acquire a water-repellent surface coating. Quantitative adsorption studies have been made on simple flotation systems1-4 only within the last few years. Such investigations were made possible by the adoption of the radiotracer method of analysis. As a consequence of these studies a new parameter has been added to aid the understanding of the flotation process. The research investigation to be discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of a cationic-type collector. This objective was approached through the determination of the distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz-solution interface and the solution as a function of the collector salt concentration and pH. To bring this investigation to focus on the more practical aspect of flotation research, an attempt was also made to correlate the adsorption results with actual flotation tests. Quartz: A —100 mesh ground crystalline quartz was infrasized; the products of the third and fourth cones were mixed together and reserved for experimental purposes. This stock material was cleaned by leaching in boiling concentrated HC1. After leaching the quartz was rinsed with distilled water until the filtrate showed no trace of chloride ian. It was then washed several times and dried. The qwrtz had a specific surface of 1400 cma per g as deterhined by the krypton gas adsorption method. Collector: The distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz surface and the solution phase was determined by the radiotracer method of analysis with carbon 14 as the tracer element. The radioactive amine salt with C" synthesized into the hydrocarbon chain5 was supplied by Armour and Co. The tracer element was located adjacent to the polar group. The radioactive salt as received had a specific activity of about 0.14 mc per g. When desired, dilution of this activity was effected by addition of non-radioactive dodecylammonium acetate also supplied by Armour and Co. ........ All other inorganic reagents used in this research were of reagent grade. Conductivity water was used for making up all solutions. Adsorption Tests: Two different experimental methods were used. In the first, to be designated as the agitation method, a weighed amount of quartz and a measured volume of amine salt solution were agitated in a 100-ml or 50-ml glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinder. The cylinder was filled with solution up to the stopper, since erratic results were obtained when an air space was left over the suspension. Time of agitation varied from 1 to 2 hr. Preliminary tests at different agitation times showed that the amount adsorbed remained constant for all agitation times exceeding 1/2 hr. After this conditioning period, the solids were separated from the solution by filtration through a Buechner fritted-disk funnel. The solution was re-circulated 10 times or more to allow the fused silica disk to come to equilibrium with it. Determinations of the amount of amine adsorbed on the frit itself indicated that this amount was less than 10 pct by weight of the amine acetate abstracted by 10 g of quartz. The funnel with quartz covered by a thin layer of solution was then centrifuged for approximately 5 min, at which time the moisture content of the solids was reduced to about 5 pct by weight. The wet quartz was blown into a tared beaker, re-weighed and allowed to dry at room temperature. A final weighing was then made to determine the moisture content. The second experimental method, similar to the procedure adopted by Gaudinand Bloecher,' will be referred to as the column method. Two liters of solution were passed through a bed of quartz contained in a Buechner funnel attached to a pyrex separatory funnel by means of a ball and socket joint. Preliminary tests showed that increasing the volume of solution above 2 liters does not give a measurable increase in adsorption. From 4 to 4 1/2 hr were required for 2 liters of solution to pass through the column. The moisture content of the quartz was again reduced to a minimum by centrifuging. A slightly modified column apparatus was used for experimenting with alkaline amine solutions. The following series of analyses, which may, be of interest to Bessemer-steel makers, is submitted as a contribution to the muchvexed discussion of manganese in Bessemer steel. They were made by the writer in the spring of 1881, at the works of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company Limited, during a' period of about eight days, part of. which time the rail-steel showed great variation in rolling qualities. During the first part of tile time in question, it rolled well; later on it began to roll wome until, finally, it cracked very badly, reaching its worst stage. After this it rapidly improved until it again rolled smoothly. During this time of transition from good rolling to bad, and hack to good again, the course of the manganese was followed quite closely. It is the striking correspondence between these varying manganese contents and the differences in rolling which is here presented as worthy of notice. The other ordinary elements were determined occasionally, but showed no. unusual variation: The steel, in question, was ordinary rail-steel of about the following compusition : C=35. P - .08.
