At least three million ounces of placer gold has been mined from hundreds of deposits in the Southwest since the 1600's. Nevada, the most productive state, produced about 1,700,000 oz. Most of the placers are in accumulations of unsorted, coarse, angular gravel in gullies, dry washes, and on hill- sides. The gold is mixed with debris from the adjacent bedrock and is typically concentrated at or near bedrock or on clay layers or caliche-cemented gravels above bedrock. The most extensive and productive placers are thick accumulations of debris in well-defined stream or gully channels, in alluvial fans at the edges of the range fronts, or as thick residuum on hillsides. With very few exceptions, the gold has been transported only a very short distance from the source. Numerous small high-grade gold-quartz veinlets, rather than single large lode deposits, are by far the most common source of placer gold. Most placer mining consisted of small-scale one-or two-man operations using rockers, pans, and sluices when water was available and dry-washing machines when it was not. Where gravels were deep the miner would dig shafts to bedrock and drift along the paystreak. Large-scale operations in the major districts utilized floating or stationary dredges or, more rarely, hydraulicking to mine extensive deposits. An adequate supply of water for efficient concentration of gold has always been a major problem in the Southwest. To overcome this problem, difficult and sometimes ingenious techniques were used-pipelines to carry water for miles to the placer area were constructed, or gravel was hauled to central washing plants where water was available; numerous designs of dry-washing machines were invented. In some districts, attempts to mine the gravels by large- scale operations failed because the gravels were too wet for dry concentration methods, and no water was available for wet methods; or, when water was available, the gravels were too porous to retain sufficient water in the dredging pond.

INTRODUCTION The Empress Nickel Mine is situated forty-eight kilometres west of Kadoma in the Zhombe Communal Land of Zimbabwe. The mine came into operation in late 1968 based on a proved and probable ore reserve of twenty million tonnes. The initial production rate was 55 000 tonnes per month from underground. This was boosted to 85 000 tonnes per month in mid 1970 when the opencast operation came into production. The mining method at Empress is sub-level open stoping with main haulages mined at ninety metre intervals and sub-levels at eighteen metres. The extremely wide ore body of up to one hundred metres in width has necessitated leaving extremely large rib pillars and sill pillars in position to maintain mine stability and to act as regional support of the hanging wall. In early 1976 the opencast operation had reached its final economic depth and it was then necessary to increase underground production to 85 000 tonnes per month. Since a large portion of the ore reserve remained in both rib and sill pillars, it was necessary to embark on a positive pillar recovery programme. For this reason it was decided to introduce a sandfilling programme for the mined-out stopes and a modified system of sub-level open stoping with post filling of the lower stopes. ORE BODY GEOLOGY AND GEOMETRY The Empress orebody outcrop has a strike length of nine hundred and fifty metres on a north west - south east axis. It is a steeply dipping (65' - 75') tabular orebody of gabbroic rock which has been extensively altered. The push-pull test, which is a simple injection and pumping sequence of ground water spiked with solutes of interest, is presented as a method of determining the adsorption characteristics of a formation. Adsorption properties are necessary to predict restoration from both in situ coal gasification and in situ uranium extraction. The major problems in applying laboratory measurements to the field concern scaling the effect of particle size, and obtaining representative samples. Laboratory measurements are conducted on gram to kilogram scale samples, whereas the push-pull test evaluates a sample weighing approximately 130 to 1,000 metric tons, depending on volume injected and porosity. The problems in translating laboratory results to the field appear to be less severe for sedimentary uranium bodies than for coal. Laboratory measurements are useful in delineating possible ranges in adsorption properties, and in planning the field experiment. The adsorption properties of a formation are characterized by the cation exchange capacity (C) and the distribution coefficient measured at low concentration, (kd) 'Laboratory procedures for their measurement on coal and uranium ore are reported. Two field push-pull tests were conducted on uranium formations in Wyoming. Adsorption properties estimated from these tests on the basis of a simple cell model were compared to the laboratory values. In the first case, excellent agreement was observed between the values estimated from the field test and the values measured in the laboratory. In the second case, the value for kd determined in the laboratory was 5 times higher than the field value. It is recommended that push-pull tests be conducted on coal formations being considered for in situ gasification in view of the great uncertainty in extrapolating 1aboratory.adsorption properties to the field.

It is the purpose of this paper to discuss briefly some of the recent developmellts in connection with the use of electrical apparatus for the mining of coal. For several years electricity has been employed extensively for the distribution of power, primarily for the operation of mine-locomotives and chain coal-cutters, and secondarily for motors driving pumps, ventilating-fans, rope-haulage, conveyors, crushers, auger-drills, coke-oven larries, etc. The severe and peculiar conditions which attend the development and distribution of power for the operation of coalmining machinery constitute a field to which the electricmotor seems to be especially adapted. The underground use of steam-engines, to any great extent, is impracticable for obvious reasons. The much higher efficiency of the electrical system is a potent argument in its favor as compared with compressed air, which, under ordinary circumstances, should only be employed for the operation of rock-drills and coal" punchers." The conditions in many mines prohibit the under-cutting of coal with a chain-machine; and the compressed-air " puncher," with its very low efficiency, is extensively employed. There have been no recent important improvements in the design and construction of the chain-machine, although, of course, minor changes are continually being made. More time and attention are being paid now than ever before to the details of mining-machinery, with the idea of eliminating the weaknesses which have been developed, and especially of facilitating repairs and renewals. There exists an unconfirmed opinion among many ironmasters that the combination of a small quantity of manganese, chromium, titanium, tungsten, aluminium, nickel, and some of the metalloids with iron has a beneficial effect upon the quality. And the impression prevails in some localities that the excellence of steel greatly depends upon the influence of some of these elements. Brit as the recorded experiments are so meagrely described, and made under such various conditions, the student in search of information upon the subject is somewhat bewildered by the contradiction of the opinions expressed. Observing some interesting phenomena while experimenting with an alloy of iron, copper, and nickel, I was led to determine the effect of some of the metals upon iron as free from contamination by other elements as it is possible to procure in practice, in order that the result of an alloy of an individual metal with iron might be more closely studied; for it is almost an impossibility to determine the influence of a small amount of one element upon a metal combined with a large amount of another, and the mere presence of another sometimes makes this difficult. And as most of the experiments recorded upon this subject have been made with iron containing sufficient carbon and other elements to interfere with the effect of that metal the influence of which it was desired to observe, I have endeavored to avoid these sources of error as far as practicable. Until the end of 1960, the small primary aluminum industry in Australia was run by the government. The entire operation was at Bell Bay on the north coast of Tasmania. It consisted of an alumina plant and smelter, owned jointly by the Commonwealth and the State of Tasmania. Apparent domestic demand that year was about 48,000 long tons; 11% thousand came from Bell Bay; the rest was imported. By March 1964, Australia had two fully integrated aluminum companies. The government has stepped out of the picture and the key word of the industry from bauxite to metal is "growth." Present annual capacity of the two companies for making aluminum metal totals 92,000 long tons a year. Australian demand is about 60,000 tons. By 1968 Australian consumption should be 90,000 tons and by 1970 it is expected to reach 107,000 long tons per year. Export markets for bauxite, alumina and metal are developing.

On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

Specimens of P1 brass were plastically deformed at room temperature to various degrees of deformation and subsequently cooled in order to transform them to low-temperature martensite. Deformation shifts Ms. A, , and the temperature of minimum resistivity to lower temperatures, and also decreases the temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity. These properties change rapidly up to about 15 pct reduction but vary very little with higher deformation. The possible relationships between martensite formed by deformation and the M, temperature of low-temperature martensite are discussed. Evidence is given that deformation martensite delays the formation of low-temperature martensite. BETA' brass undergoes at least two different types of martensitic transformations. One of these transformations (B1- B2) was first observed by Kaminski and ~urdjumov' and occurs when 81 brass with a zinc content between 38 and 42 wt pct (quenched from the single-phase region) is cooled below room temperature. Jollev and Hull' determined the structure of 0" from X-ray and electron-diffraction data as ortho-rhombic. Kunze came to the conclusion that the super-lattice cell of 0" is one-sided face-centered triclinic (pseudomonoclinic). The second martensitic transformation (B1-A1) occurs when the specimens are deformed at or somewhat above room temperature. This type of martensite will be called deformation martensite. Horn-bogen, Segmuller, and Wassermann4 determined the structure of deformation martensite to be bct. (An intermediate phase, az, occurs before the final phase appears.) At deformations higher than 70 pct, a, transforms into a.4 A critical temperature Md exists above which no transformation occurs during deformation and is estimated to be around 400°C in P1 brass.5 This martensite has elastic properties.6 When the sample is stressed, martensitic plates appear; when the stress is released, the plates disappear. The present paper studies the effect of deformation martensite on the formation of low-temperature martensite. The experiments involved samples of 8, brass which were plastically deformed by various amounts and were subsequently cooled below the transformation temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The 13 brass investigated was made from 99.999 pct pure copper and 99.9999 pct pure zinc and contained 38.8 wt pct Zn. The specimens, consisting of foils 0.1 mm in thickness, were heat-treated at 8'70°C for 15 min in an argon atmosphere and then quenched into ice water. They were then deformed by cold rolling and subsequently cooled at a rate of 1°C per min. The martensitic transformation that occurred during cooling was followed by electrical resistivity measurements. The resistance measurement technique and its accuracy have been described in a previous paper. Because the transformation 81 —-8" occurs below room temperature, the samples were placed in a cryo-stat which contained isopentane as a cooling medium. The isopentane was cooled by liquid nitrogen pumped under pressure through a 15-ft coil of copper tubing which was immersed in the isopentane. The nitrogen flow was regulated by a temperature controller using two thermistors in the cooling medium. The cryogenic liquid could be heated with an immersion heater. The useful temperature range with this device was from +25° to approximately -155~C. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Resistivity Measurements. The following abbreviations are used in this paper to label the characteristic temperatures during the martensitic transformation. M, is the starting point of the martensitic transformation and is defined as that temperature where the resistivity vs temperature curve on cooling first deviates from a straight line. Mf is the temperature at which the martensitic transformation is completed. On reheating, the transformation from martensite to the parent phase starts at a temperature A, and ceases at a temperature Af. Fig. 1 presents five different resistivity vs temperature curves corresponding to the transformation of brass from Dl to 8" after different degrees of reduction in thickness. The following observations can be made from these curves. 1) With increasing degree of deformation the Ms temperature is shifted to lower temperatures. This shift ranges up to 35°C compared to the undeformed state. This is also indicated in Fig. 2, where AM, (the shift of Ms, compared to the undeformed state) is plotted vs the degree of deformation. AM, increases rapidly until a reduction of about 15 pct is reached. With higher deformations, no additional increase in AM, was found. 2) With increasing degree of deformation the temperature of minimum resistivity (M) is also shifted to lower temperatures. The shift, attains a maximum of about 61°C compared to the undeformed state. In Fig. 3, AM is plotted as a function of deformation. It can be seen that, as in 1 above, AM increases rapidly and no further shift of M occurs for deformations greater than 15 pct. 3) The temperature coefficient of resistivity, is given by the slopes (dp/dT) of the linear portions of

In this paper, major attention is given to misfires in mines where electric multiple shot-firing is the system used. Misfires are sometimes caused by one action or condition and at other times by a combination of two or more. They may be divided into two classes: (1) those caused by workers in the mines, (2) mechanical or manufacturer's causes. The second cause will be discussed first. Misfires Caused by Faulty Detonators The important part of an electric blasting cap, to the user where multiple shot-firing is done, as in the steep-pitch, thiek-vein, anthracite mines, is the bridge wire. In single shot-firing this factor is not apparent, but in mines where multiple firing is done any variation in the resistance of the bridge wire, where full or even rated battery capacity is required, will most likely cause a misfire. The reason for this is obvious. If the resistance in the bridge wires is not the same, some of the detonators will fire because of their greater comparative resistance. Variance in resistance of bridge wires is caused by a slight difference in the diameter of the bridge wire, also by a difference in the composition of the bridge wires. Again, where the bridge wires have become rusted, there will be a variance in resistance. About the year 1922, one of the large coal companies was greatly alarmed by the number of serious and fatal accidents caused by misfires. The general manager issued an order that these accidents must be greatly reduced, and if possible, entirely prevented. The officials at the mines had to determine the various causes of misfires and have them corrected. The rock contractors who use large quantities of 60 to 80 per cent. explosives and do all firing electrically were thoroughly instructed as to the proper methods of doing their work, and closer supervision was given to their work. The manufacturer's representatives stressed the importance of the use of galvanometers; accordingly these were purchased and used. Larger firing lines were installed under the supervision of a demonstrator of the company manufacturing the caps and explosives. However, misfires again occurred and it was evident that the source of the trouble was not wholly

IT is not known when silica sand was first noticed along the north coast of Puerto Rico, but the first mention of its occurrence was made in 1922, by N. L. Britton,1 who described its presence in isolated patches extending from Loiza westward beyond Manati. Further observations were made in 1925 and 1926 by Meyerhoff,2 who extended the known occurrences still farther westward to the low hill belt in the Quebradillas limestone immediately south of Hatillo. The extraordinary purity of the sands, which in most localities exhibit no contamination from the nonsiliceous materials surrounding them, was quickly appreciated, and the feasibility of utilizing them for the manufacture of glass was investigated, initially by the Committee on Mineral Resources3 and later (1936) by the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration and by H. C. Ray, mining engineer of the Insular Bureau of Mines. In 1934 samples submitted to the Hazel Atlas Glass Co., of Washington, Pennsylvania, were reported to have the composition as shown in the table on column two. Appreciation of the quality of the sand prompted geological and quantitative studies of the deposits, as well as commercial investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing it locally or on the mainland for the manufacture of glass containers. [ ] DISTRIBUTION OF THE SANDS The quartz sands consistently lie within the outcrop area of the Quebradillas limestone, the youngest of the Miocene formations in the Tertiary coastal plain that fringes the northern coast of the Island. Many of the deposits are closely associated with limestone outcrops, but some appear to be embedded in lagoonal sediments at some distance from rock exposures, and at least one deposit, near Dorado, has been reworked by waves and littoral currents. With this single known exception, the deposits consist of irregular, patternless patches of white sand, which have sharply defined contacts with the surrounding material. Although patches of sand are present in a 90-km. belt that is not more than 5 km. wide, extending from Loiza to Hatillo, they attain maximum size, purity and number in the north central coastal area between Dorado and Barceloneta. THERE is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely di-vided materials, particularly when the par-ticle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the sam-ples produced are adequate for a consider-able amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determina-tions of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essen-tially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the set-tling rate. The balance appears to be in-herently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have re-stricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investiga-tion might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool for the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribu-tion determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used, in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared, early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could he accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the dis-tribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

This paper is intended as an aid in the perfornzance and interpretation of experimental studies of multi-phase flow in porous tnedia. The mathenmatical formulation of incompressible, two-phase flow phenomena in a three-dimensional porous medium is presented. The resulting equations which account for the effects of gravitational and capillary forces are used to derive general scaling laws permitting accurate representation of water-oil displacement processes by means of experimental flow models. The significance of the scaling laws is examined in the light of the physical concepts of micro-behavior of fluids in porous media. Formulations of scaling con(litions obtained by application of dimensional analysis are reviewed. The principles of application and the limitations of flow model studies are discussed. INTRODUCTION Most of the problems facing a reservoir engineer involve three-dimensional, two-phase flow systems. influenced by the effects of gravitational and capillary forces. Present computational procedures generally do not permit the evaluation of such systems without introducing greatly simplifying assumptions. The actual reservoir configuration is usually replaced by one or a combination of several "equivalent" linear systems, and the effects of capillarity and gravity are considered to be negligible. While these assumptions may in many instances be justified, there are a number of important practical problems for which the results obtained on the basis of such simplifications remain open to question. An alternate approach to the problems that are not amenable to analytical treatment consists of seeking their solution by experimental laboratory investigations. The main difficulty of such investigations lies in the fact that multiphase flow phenomena subjected to gravity and capillary forces proceed differently at different rates and in systems of different dimensions. Therefore, unless great discrimination is exercised in selecting the conditions and interpreting the results of laboratory tests, such tests may be entirely misleading in regard to field applications. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical background for the performance of laboratory tests that are more nearly representative of field behavior. It will be shown that simulation of field behavior can be achieved by conducting laboratory tests under conditions selected in accordance with definite scaling laws. The formulation of conditions required for the scaling of two-phase flow experiments in porous media has been presented in the literature on several occasions.12,3,4 One of these formulations advanced by Leverett1, cannot be considered applicable to most practical cases inasmuch as it does not cover generally the regime of laminar flow. An adequate treatment, based on the consideration of dimensional analysis, was presented by Engelberts and Klinkenberg.2 Their treatment, however, is concerned primarily with the scaling of linear flow systems, and hence somewhat limited in scope. Accordingly, the formulation of more general scaling laws, applicable to three-dimensional systems, appeared to be warranted. It appeared, furthermore. desirable to establish this formulation on the basis of a mathematical treatment, rather than by application of general principles of dimensional analysis, to permit more explicit

Every constructing engineer and designer knows how often it is desirable to provide a speed-adjustment between parts of a machine performing different functions, or between a prime mover and the devices to which it furnishes power, and how bulky and unsatisfactory are most of the methods by which the result is usually accomplished. Of course the step-pulley is the most simple and generally used. It requires, (1) parallelism of shafts; (2) a considerable distance between centers; and (3) a cessation of power during the change from one speed to another. Add to this the necessity for careful design in order to obtain equal belt-tension for all positions; the weight and hulk required for a wide range; and the operative's positive conviction that better results could be obtained at a speed intermediate between those furnished by two successive steps, and we begin to realize the mechanical shortcomings of this old and familiar friend. The hundred and one other devices, patented and otherwise, for accomplishing similar results, present other objections of varying importance, which need not be discussed here. Without pretending to overcome these entirely, and indeed without claiming absolute novelty, a recent invention of Mr. E. F. Gordon, of Dover, N. H., has seemed to the writer to offer such advantages in flexibility and range of application as to merit a more extended study and use than can be given in his own work, to which it is being applied as rapidly as opportunity permits. It is placed before the members of the Institute, not only to bring out an expression of opinion as to its limitations, but also with the hope that it will thus find opportunities for applications hitherto untried and outside the scope of operation of those at present interested in its development. The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

Applications of the mathematical theory of plasticity promises to lead to the solution of many drilling and rock mechanics problems. ,Because of mathematical considerations, the inelastic behavior of rock has frequently been represented by a perfectly plastic model in conjunction with a yield criteria of the Coulomb or Mohr type. The totality of all stress states for which a solid ceases to behave elastically can be represented as a limit surface in stress space. ,Probing of such limit surfaces indicates details of strain hardening which are not provided by the standard triaxial testing procedure. Probing tests of the limit surfaces have been performed on Cardova Cream limestone to provide data for extending plasticity theory to cover situations in which consolidation and strain hardening are present. Test results indicate that this highly porous limestone undergoes a permanent volume decrease when it is subjected to hydrostatic pressures in excess of 3,500 psi. A virgin sample tested under a confining pressure of 1,500 psi has a yield strength of 1,700 psi; however, if the sample is subjected to a consolidation pressure of 5,000 psi, before testing at 1,500 psi, the yield strength is raised to 2,300 psi. Thus, both consolidation and strain hardening are important considerations in describing the mechanical behavior of this limestone. Tests conducted with the axis of the core having different orientations indicate that this rock is also anisotropic. Portions of the initial and subsequent limit surfaces are determined for samples loaded either perpendicular or parallel to the bedding planes. INTRODUCTION Previous experimental work in rock mechanics indicates that no mathematically tractable constitutive theory is inclusive enough to describe the mechanical behavior exhibited by all types of rocks under all conditions of stress and temperature. Indeed, the type of deformation encountered in a single type of rock is known to depend upon the stress and temperature conditions in the rock during deformation.l-5 Certain rocks and minerals, notably those minerals composed of ionic salts, have been shown to exhibit plastic deformation when tested under conditions of high confining pressure.2 Since the mathematical theory of plasticity provides simplifications over the theory of elasticity in certain types of problems, such as those in which limit analysis can be applied, it is of interest to know under what conditions plasticity theory may be applied to rock mechanics problems. The following factors determine the nature of the deformation a particular specimen will undergo: (1) the microscopic structure of the rock, i.e., the structure visible under an optical microscope, including number of phases, porosity, distribution of phases, (2) the mineralogical structure of the solid phases, (3) the conditions of stress and the rate of change of stress and (4) the temperature. Extensive experiments on Yule marble, Carthage marble, Solenhofen limestone and other calcerous rocks indicate that these relatively nonporous rocks deform plastically under certain conditions of loading, and creep under other conditions of loading.l-3 This study is concerned with the behavior of Cordova Cream limestone (Austin chalk) which is also composed almost entirely of calcite and thus has the same mineralogical composition but, because of a rather large porosity, it possesses a different microscopic structure. This investigation was undertaken to learn if Cordova Cream limestone deforms plastically despite the embrittling effect of the pore spaces, and to provide data which can be used to determine whether the mathematical theory of plasticity can describe the mechanical behavior of Cordova Cream limestone. A brief discussion is given of some of the underlying principles of plasticity theory concerning stress space and limit surfaces. Strain hardening is defined and a discussion is given of how the mechanical behavior of a material can depend on the previous history of the loading. The influence of high temperatures on the zinc roasting practice has been investigated by full-scale tests in fluid bed reactors operating at temperatures from 950° to 1150°C. It was definitely shown that, throughout the range, an increase in tem perature resulted in a 2 to 3 pct increase in zinc solubility because of decreased content of zinc fer-rite and lowered sulfide sulfur. The former is attributed to thermal decomposition of ZnFe,O,, and the latter to increased oxidation rates, ad longer retention times. Data on the gveatly increased volatilization of lead, cadmium, and silver above 1000°C, are presented. A considerable fraction of the iron present in the feed was also transferred at high temperatures from the coarse roaster discharge to the flue dusts. AS part of its metallurgical complex1-3 situated in a 12,000 it Andean valley at La Oroya, Peru, Cerro de Pasco Corp. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Cerro carp.) operates a 150 short ton per day electrolytic zinc refinery. Electrolysis is carried out at a cathode current density of 65 amp per sq ft with an electrolyte content of 55 g per liter of Zn and 150 g per liter of su lf uric acid. Due to the high iron content of the marmatitic concentrate used, a large fraction—about 15 pct—of the zinc reports in the leach residues. To minimize such losses, efforts have been exerted toward improving calcine solubility. One method, as noted in the literatre,, is to retard zinc ferrite formation by decreasing the roasting temperature. Unfortunately, such a procedure tends either to reduce the roaster throughput or increase the sulfide sulfur in the calcine. Consequently, this approach was discarded in favor of experimental work in the opposite direction, i.e., high temperature roasting. Full- scale tests were promising and resulted in the granting of a patent to Cerro de Pasco carp.' After a brief account of plant equipment and operating procedure, this paper describes the tests made and attempts to assess the results obtained. GENERAL PLANT LAYOUT AND OPERATION The Roasting Plant, see Fig. 1, comprises an agglomerating plant feeding three fluid bed roasters with a combined capacity of 10,000 tons per month. The Peruvian patent rights on this process were purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The concentrate, assaying: is pelletized to a -3 +14 mesh product and fed to the fluid bed roasters. The roaster exhaust gases pass through a waste heat boiler, cyclones, a fan, and an electrostatic precipitator. Approximately half of the dust collected in the cyclones returns to the pellet-izing plant as one of the binding ingredients, the remainder joins the cooled bed discharge ('overflow') and is conveyed to the grinding plant. The -35 mesh product obtained, together with the dust collected in the electrostatic precipitator constitute the feed to the leaching plant. Batch leaches are made in vessels with mechanical and air agitation, the residues are separated and washed in Burt Filters, and pumped to storage ponds. THE FLUID BED ROASTERS Two reactors are as shown in Fig. 2, and the third,' of about the same configuration, is approximately 40 pct smaller. The total grate and freeboard (just below the gas outlet) areas measure 170 and 426 sq ft respectively. The feed, continuously weighed and controlled by Merrick Weighto-meters fitted with variable speed motors, enters the reactors at the top of the expanded bed level. THE Workmen's Compensation Act of Ontario was passed in 1915 and Miners' Phthisis was added to the list of compensable industrial diseases in 1916. Under this provision of the Act only about two cases were compensated per year. In 1924, The Department of Public Health made a survey of miners in the four principal camps-Sudbury, Porcupine, Kirkland Lake and Cobalt--and the survey indicated that an alarming proportion of the men exposed to dust had silicosis in one or other of its several stages. A number of conferences were held between representatives of the Department of Mines, the Department of Public Health, the Compensation Board and the mine operators. The operators were advised that in the earliest stages of silicosis there was no physical disability and if men in that stage were removed from underground there would be little danger of permanent disability. They were further advised that if active steps were taken at once to compensate men that had some real disability and remove from the mines men in the early stages of silicosis, the first cost would be the greatest and thereafter their liability should decrease. As a result of this advice, and having at that time no reason to doubt the findings of the survey, the operators agreed to do all that was asked of them and cooperate with the Government in the steps believed necessary to meet the situation, and to provide compensation for the men affected. Amendments In 1926 Arrangements were made for the necessary amendments to the Mines Act and the Workmen's Compensation Act and these amendments were passed in 1926. The Amendment to the Mines Act provided that all underground employees must be the holders of certificates certifying that they were free from tuberculosis of the respiratory organs and further provided that the certificates must be renewed annually. The Government, however, at that time refused to adopt a form of certificate for applicants certifying as to their physical fitness for underground work. The resistance to flow of mixtures of gas and oil in passing up through the flow tubing of oil wells operated by gas-lift or by natural flow is a factor in oil-recovery technic that has received but little attention. Yet accurate design of a tubing installation for a particular set of conditions, where operation is by either of these methods, is impossible without quantitative data on the pressure loss suffered by the oil-gas mixture in its passage through the well tubing to the surface. Because of lack of such information, petroleum production technologists have been compelled to approach this problem by " cut-and-try" methods, which, doubtless in many cases, has resulted in the installation and use of tubing too large or too small for most efficient utilization of the expansive force of the gas used in lifting the oil. Impressed with the necessity for information of this character, the authors have conducted a series of tests with large-scale apparatus in the petroleum engineering laboratories of the University of California, designed to be productive of data that would afford a means of attacking the problem of flow-tubing design on a more scientific basis. Mechanics of Expulsion of Gas-oil Mixtures in Naturally Flowing and Gas-lift Wells When oil is lifted from a well by the expansive force of compressed natural gas or air, the fluids enter the lower end of the eduction tube under elevated pressure, with the gas partly in solution, but largely distributed in the form of occluded bubbles within the oil mass. As discharged from deep wells, after reaching the surface, there will normally be at least 60 times as much gas, by volume, as of oil; and in many cases the ratio of gas volume to that of the oil will have a value as great as 1000 or more. On entering the lower end of the eduction tube, however, a relatively smaller volume of gas will be found in the oil-gas mixture, on account of compression of the gas in accordance with the elevated pressure necessary. PROGRESS in blast-furnace practice during 1922 has been in the direction pointed out in my article in the March, 1922, issue of MINING AND METAL-LURGY; this advance has been very satisfactory in spite of the difficulties caused by the great coal strike and the railroad strike. The progress, especially in increased tonnage, has been brought about, not by increasing the size of the furnaces, not by improved mechanical devices, but through the application of better blast-furnace practice; the advance has been metallurgical rather than mechanical. The increase in production per stack, has been more pronounced than in any period since the time that James Gayley began to break blast-furnace records in Pittsburgh. These big tonnages have been made in furnaces designed to make 550 to 600 tons of pig iron per day; but several such furnaces have had monthly averages of between 700 and 800 tons per day with a corresponding reduction of cost, and a reduction in the number of man-hours of labor per ton of pig iron. During this period there has been a wider acceptance of the fact that satisfactory blast-furnace results are more dependent on coke quality than on any other factor. There has always been much rivalry among blast-furnace men in making new tonnage records, and many schemes have been used for getting out big pro-duction, but the blast-furnace man cannot make the high records all by himself; it is necessary for him to have the cooperation of the entire management, and also the help of the organization that makes his blast-furnace coke. Herman Brassert has said that "there is no blast-furnace practice possible that can wholly overcome the effects of bad coke." In the past; the blast-furnace superintendent has often been under suspicion if he complained about the quality of the coke in times of unsatisfactory blast-furnace results, but it is now conceded that if the quality of the coke is not right, complaints are not necessarily made as an alibi.

The allotropic volume changes of the ,metallic elements are reviezoed with the conclusion that in general atomic volume is conserved to better than 1 pct in such transformations. A table of the atomic volumes of the metallic elements is given and its use in considering the size factor in alloys is discussed. The importance of the concept of atomic-size factor, due to Hume-Rothery and coworkers,' is firmly established. Most attempts at quantitative formulations of this concept have employed the atomic radius (half some interatomic distance) as the measure of size and innumerable tables of such radii exist. This is probably, however, an unfortunate choice of parameter. Firstly, discussion in terms of interatomic distances requires a knowledge of the crystal structure. While this is known, except for a few cases, for the elemental structures, there are still many undetermined alloy structures. Secondly, except for the simpler structures, face-centered cubic (Al),* body-centered cubic (A2),* and hexagonal-close-packed (A3).* with ideal axial ratio, there is no unique in- teratomic distance, an m y decision must be made as to which distance, or which average of the distances, should be used. However, the most important point is that for metals the dominant bonding parameter can generally be expected to be atomic volume and not interatomic distance. This is perhaps most explicitly stated in the Wigner-Seitz cellular method.' In this approximation, cellular polyhedra of atomic volume v are replaced by spheres of radius Y,: 4/3 ?rs3 = v. That is, there is no reference to the interatomic distances. If atomic volume is in fact the dominant parameter, then in allotropic transformations we might expect to find atomic volume approximately conserved. For example, in the A1 ?
