Experiments performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This conclusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely consolidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be introduced was the cementing material. Experimental Procedure A comparatively limited assortment of sandstones was available for the selection of the experimental material. Of these, the Nichols buff sandstone appeared to be most suitable. It gives no visual evidence of any bedding planes, it has a firm structure, permitting easy handling, and its permeability is about 0.5 darcy. Its only disadvantage is the fact that it contains an appreciable amount of ferric oxide which, for experiments involving water, will hydrate and reduce the permeability. This

The Blind River mining camp in Canada is all set to stage a major revolution. Enthusiasts on the scene say it will bring large-scale mining to North American uranium operation. If orebodies already discovered live up to their promise, it will be anything but the usual business of a few men handpicking orebearing rock out of small mines. Because of the geological structure of the region referred to generally as the Algoma district the ore may prove an extremely lucrative enterprise for years to come. The present center of activity is in Ontario about 75 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, and just north of Lake Huron. It stacks up as one of the large uranium discoveries in the Western Hemisphere. For a change modern mining machinery working against large ore faces of predictable grade will enable mine operators to send a product to mills of several thousand tons daily capacity. Ore shapes-up as worth more than $20 per ton. Already, many millions of tons of ore have been outlined and apparently reserves are sufficient to keep the proposed large mills going for decades. And the end is not yet in sight. This region in the Sudbury subdivision has been known for decades as having occasionally rich but sporadic occurrences of nickel, gold, pyrite, and other minerals. Because of the unpredictable mineralization for more than 80 miles along the contact line of a huge reversed "S" there was no record of successfully organized mining in the district-until the present one.

Ventilation may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an enclosed or partly enclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent, carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, in mines it sometimes occurs in sufficient quantities to cause symptoms in men or even unconsciousness and death. One-half of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide in normal air causes a slight and unnotice-able increase in the ventilation of the lungs, that is, a man exposed to one-ha,lf of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide will breathe a little deeper and a little faster than when in pure air. The deformation behavior in tension of spheroidized carbon steels was studied at room temperature as a function of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt Pct, and carbide particle size, 0.88 to 2.77 p. It was found that the Hall-Petch strength-grain size relation is directly applicable to the yield and flow stresses of the two lower-carbon steels , 0.065 and 0.30 pct C. The strength data for the medium- and high-carbon steels, 0.55 to 1.46 pct C, also satisfied the Hall-Petch relation, provided that these data are based upon the particle spacing. Beyond 4 pct strain, the flow stress data of all the steels studied could be represented by the same Hall-Petch relation with dinerent spacings for grain boundary and particle strengthening. The behavior of the higher-carbon steels was consistent with the postulated formation of a dislocation cell network during processing and initial deformation (up to 4 pct strain). The cell size was assumed to be equal to the planar particle spacing. The true stress at the ultimate tensile strength was also found to be a function of the particle spacing. At a given temperature and strain rate, the yield and flow stresses of carbon steels depend on the type and dimensions of the microstructure. Starting with the work of Gensamer et al. in 1942,' experimental studies on pearlitic and spheroidized carbon steels revealed that the strength of steels is a function of two main parameters: the ferrite grain size2'3 and the carbide particle spacing;1'4'5 on this basis, two different strengthening mechanisms have been developed to apply to steels of low and high carbon contents, respectively. In polycrystalline iron and mild steels the grain boundaries are regarded as the major structural barriers to slip. The relation between strength and grain size is generally represented by the Hall-Petch equation which is based on a linear proportionality between strength and the inverse square root of the average grain size.2'3y677 However, Gensamer et al.' and Roberts et related the yield strength of medium -and high-carbon steels to the carbide particle spacing alone, and they found a linear relation between the logarithm of the mean free path in the ferrite and the yield strength in both spheroidized and pearlitic steels. By means of the electron microscope, Turkalo and LOW' extended the study to finer structures; they concluded that the logarithmic relation is not valid for the entire range of microstructures unless grain boundaries are also included in the measurement of the mean free path. For the specific case of spheroidized steels, Ansell and aenel' found that the yield strength data,4'5 when plotted as a function of mean free path, fit the Hall-Petch equation; however, T'ysong found that the same data fit the 0rowanl0 relation if a planar inter-particle spacing is used. Recently Kossowsky and ~rown" studied the strength of prestrained spheroidized steels, 0.48 and 0.95 pct C, and concluded that the strength due to the carbide dispersions varies linearly with the reciprocal of the square root of the mean free path between carbide particles and dislocation networks. Such networks were first observed by Turkalo." The conclusion common to all these studies is that the available slip distance in the ferrite is the most important variable in determining strendh. Previous work on carbon steels is restricted to limited composition and strain ranges. The mechanism which governs the flow properties is not clearly understood, and, in particular, little is known about the composition dependence of the transition between grain boundary strengthening and particle hardening. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the strengthening mechanism in spheroidized steels over a wide range of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, and plastic strain, yielding to necking. The spheroidized structure was chosen because of its relative simplicity and the relative ease of control and measurement of the structural parameters. The experimental work is limited to tensile testing at room temperature at constant extension rate. The effects of the carbide particles on the fracture behavior of spheroidized steels are discussed elsewhere.13 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight different grades of vacuum-cast carbon steels were supplied in the form of forged and rolled plate by the Applied Research Laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. The compositions furnished with these steels are given in Table I; the carbon content ranges from 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, or from 1.0 to 22.3 vol pct of carbide. The steel plates were cut transversely into rods a little larger than the test specimens, 1 in. gage length, i in. diam. The rods were austenitized in air (enriched with CO by a consumable carbon-rich muffle) at 50° C above theA, orA., temperature for 2 hr and then quenched in oil with vigorous stirring. The as-quenched rods were tempered in two stages in order to obtain the desired distributions and sizes of carbide particles. The rods were first tempered at 460° C for 10 hr and then at 700" C for periods ranging from 4 hr to 3 days, in vacuum. After final machining, all specimens were vacuum-annealed again at 650°C for 1 hr in order to relieve residual stresses. The tension tests were carried out in two steps. The initial part of the load-strain curve, up to about 2 pct strain, was determined on a Riehle testing machine with an extensometer of small strain range, 4 pct strain, in order to obtain the yield and initial flow piopertiesi As soon as the first part of the test was finished, the specimen was placed in an Instron testing machine equipped with a strain gage extensometer with a maximum strain range of 50 pct. Although the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and Coke Co., at Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. PREVIOUS investigations on the temperature dependence of rolling texture transition in high-purity silver1'2 and in electrolytic copperS have shown that a brass-type texture is favored at low rolling tem- peratures, whereas a copper-type texture is favored at high rolling temperatures. The transition takes place gradually as a function of the temperature of deformation, and a general correlation between texture transition and stacking-fault frequency or probability exists—a copper-type texture is associated with low stacking-fault frequencies, and a brass-type texture is associated with high stacking-fault frequencies. If the stacking-fault energy is calculated from the stacking-fault frequency and the dislocation density of the specimen, one finds that with low stacking-fault energies a brass-type texture will be developed, and that with high stacking-fault energies the texture will be of the copper-type. These findings are consistent with the idea that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals may depend on their stacking-fault energy, although results of such nature always involve the ambiguity that a change in the density (or width) of stacking faults produced by deformation at different temperatures may be actually due to a variation in the stress, rather than due to a change in the specific stacking-fault energy per se. It has also been shown that the type of annealing texture depends entirely on the deformation texture. From a copper-type rolling texture, a strong cube texture will be formed upon recrystallization, whereas from a brass-type rolling texture, the annealing texture will be quite different from the cube orientation. It is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed. The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.

The rock-salt deposit of Petite Anse, in Louisiana, has been known for many years. A description of it, with an account of the method pursued in its exploitation, was contributed in 1888 to the Transactions of the Institute* by Mr. Richard A. Pomeroy. But this locality does not by any means comprise the whole of the resources of the State in rock-salt. A few months ago the writer published a general account + - of all the Louisiana localities now known, together with particulars concerning their technical and commercial development. In view of the fact that active enterprises in this line have increased in number, and promise to constitute an important, if not controlling, factor in the supply of salt for the immense demand of the United States (including, as it does, the consumption of this mineral as a raw material in chemical manufactures), the present paper has been prepared. While it necessarily contains much of the substance of the article above mentioned, it is accompanied with illustrations and details not heretofore published. Moreover, the former article is out of print, the publishers having no copies left of the number of their journal in which it appeared, and the writer is therefore warranted in the belief that a paper placing the essential facts on record in a form more permanently accessible to mining engineers will be acceptable to the members of the Institute.

Ball mills 5.5 m (18 ft) in diameter and larger tend to use energy delivered to the mill less efficiently than smaller diameter mills, particularly when the large mills carry 40% by volume ball charges. This paper will explore factors used in scaling up ball mills, showing where the advantages of one factor can possibly be negated by another factor. The paper will propose possible operating limits and areas for further study to establish selection and design limits.

After nine years of continuous operation it is a good idea to take stock of the geological concepts that guide the working of a mine. This is a welcome opportunity to discuss the Lovitt gold mine, which has been a challenge in both the geological and operational fields. The occurrence belongs to the extensive group of epithermal gold-silver deposits once worked so vigorously in the western states, Hungary, and New Zealand and still producing in Central America and the Philippines. These deposits are characterized by a relatively shallow vertical range up to 2000 ft, and often much less, and by bonanza orebodies of even more limited range. The area in which they occur is frequently widespread, so that exploration must be directed along and across the strike of known favorable structures in search of repetitions.

Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.

Certain alloys1 that, as a result of quenching, are retained in the form of homoaeneous solid solution are known to increase in hardness and strength on standing at room temperature or on heating at slightly elevated temperatures. Other alloys2 that, on rapid cooling, are held in the form of homogeneous solid solution, as, for example, certain steels, behave in like manner on heating to somewhat higher temperatures. The observed increase in the hardness and strength of these alloys, referred to as " aging"' or as "secondary hardness," is widely accepted as being occasioned, either in whole or in part, by the precipitation in submicroscopic form of such constituents as were held in supersaturated solid solution as a result of cooling in excess of a certain critical rate. In earlier discussions of the cause of age hardening or secondary hardness, the question of the hardness of the precipitated particles does not appear to have been raised. At present, however, the general opinion appears to be that age hardening and secondary hardness are occasioned by the precipitation of hard particles within the supersaturated solid substance.3 The authors may be wrong in their belief that the last is a prevailing opinion. SINCE my communication to the Institute at the Baltimore meeting in 1879,* in which I took the lead in emphasizing the importance of a new method in the manufacture of soda, already practiced to some extent in England and on the Continent of Europe, five years have passed. I.then referred particularly to the advantages offered in the United States for this peculiar method, by the ammonia process, namely: 1. At the present time, at least, we have but one mine in this country where rock-salt is mined, namely, at New Iberia, La. On the other hand, we have many localities where brine of various degrees of strength, up to that of cold saturation, is obtained in large quantities. 2. We have excellent fuel, in close proximity to most of the brinecenters. 3. Our supplies of pyrites, to use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, for use in the manufacture of soda by the Leblanc process, are mostly too far from the brine-centers to permit competition in that line with the more favorable conditions existing in England. 4. Unlike our foreign rivals, we have no large and costly plants, erected on the Leblanc plan, which must be abandoned and exchanged for new but cheaper plants, before the ammonia-soda process can be adopted. 5. We have a constantly increasing demand for soda, which is almost entirely supplied by importation. If slow progress has been made hitherto in this country in the extension of this manufacture (only one plant at Syracuse, erected . under the Solvay patent, having as yet been placed in operation), I still feel gratified in saying that developments in England, and particularly on the Continent of Europe, give ample proof of the

COAL MINING, as well as all the other major in-dustries of Russia, is controlled by the Soviet Gov-ernment by means of organizations in each dis-trict, known as "Trusts," such as the "Kisel Coal Trust" in the Urals, the "Donugol Trust" in the Ukraine, etc., and each Trust functions as a unit, reporting direct to the chief of the department of the government at Moscow. The responsible head of each Trust is usually a mem-ber of the Communist party and, filtered through his organization, one generally finds a fair proportion of Communists in "key" or important positions, such as purchasing agents and local managers or superinten-dents, but in the majority of places requiring technical or professional knowledge, or trained brains and ex-perience, little or no attention is paid to a man's political opinion provided, of course, he "behaves himself." These different Trusts were authorized or ordered by the Central Committee at Moscow to investigate the methods of mining and type of mines developed in all other coal producing, countries of the world, and after a period of several years of intensive investigation and study reported back to headquarters that the modern American mines were the most efficient, recommending that the program for the rehabilitation of the Russian coal mining industry should follow the lines of American practice. The Trusts were then authorized to negotiate with American engineering firms for technical service for mine designs, and invited Americans to send commis-sions to Russia to prepare and submit to the Technical Council one or more projects for a complete modern American-type operation adapted to the local conditions. A "project" is a preliminary set of designs on the entire mine, top and bottom, with specifications. cost estimates, production costs, schedule of operation, budget of expen-diture, etc., and is quite an elaborate and sizable under-taking-I might say, it took six of us working tooth and nail for over three months to finish our first project.

In his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Warkl makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism.l(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirin their results. The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen Pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally Pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to —I50+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a 200-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water

The Texas Gulf Coast had a rather disappointing year in the type of oil fields found. Although 17 fields were found in the area during the year, as against 21 fields in 1938, no field of major proportion was discovered. Of these 17 fields, 11 were oil fields, 4 were gas and distillate fields, and 2 were gas fields. The wildcat activity for the year resulted in about 400 dry holes, although probably 10 per cent of these were edge wells close to proved areas. During the year, 1455 oil and gas wells were completed as compared to 1637 wells in 1938, a decrease of 11 per cent. Production for the Texas Gulf Coast area for the year was 100,253,937 bbl. as against 92,530,467 bbl. produced in 1938, an increase of 8 per cent. The daily average production was 274,668 bbl. for the 365 days in the year, although only 252 producing days were allowed by the Railroad Commission; that is, 69 per cent of the time as compared to 71 days shut in for 80 per cent of the time producing in 1938. The total number of oil and distillate wells producing at the end of 1939 was 9495 as against 8451 at the end of 1938—an increase of 1044 wells, or 12 per cent. Of these wells, 6547 were flowing and 2948 pumping, or 69 per cent flowing. At the end of the previous year, 66 per cent of the wells were flowing. New Fields Angleton, Brazoria County.—The Angleton field was discovered by the completion of Glen McCarthy's No. 1 Carr in October for an initial production of 180 bbl. a day of 50" gravity oil through 11/64-in. choke with 3400 Ib. on tubing. The field is 1½ miles east of the town of Anchor. The discovery undoubtedly can be credited to the reflection seismograph, since several companies worked the area from 1933 onward with this type of exploration. The principal block was taken by the Humble company in 1934. Two deep holes by Humble revealed the presence of structure, although both were dry. The Humble and Sun companies later contributed money and acreage toward the drilling of the discovery well. The production is from a sand in the Frio, about 1700 ft.

This paper describes the development of a continuous float-and-sink process to produce coal low enough in ash content to be suitable for production of electrodes. The cleaned coal had a combined iron and silicon content of 0.239 pct. The efficiency of recovery was 84 pct. AUGER mining is a form of continuous mining in that it completely replaces with a one-cycle operation the older conventional cut, drill, shoot, and load method of mining. Relatively new, having been utilized only within the last few years, it is even more continuous in its production of coal than some other forms of continuous mining being practiced in this country today. There are at present coal recovery augers in operation working along strip-mined highwalls from the outside. This paper will deal with underground mining, specifically with an experiment which was carried out with a machine developed for this purpose. The location of this experiment was in Pike County in eastern Kentucky in the upper split of the No. 3 Elkhorn seam. Coal height was 32 in. and roof conditions were very bad, with 10 in. of soft draw slate coming down with every cut in conventional mining. The coal is high-grade bituminous, excellent for metallurgical coking. Underground auger mining fills a need for a method of recovering coal in thin seams, under bad roof conditions or in split seams. In many cases it might save money by eliminating the handling of excessive quantities of rock. In fact, if the coal can be recovered, as in the case of this experiment, without mixing with any impurities outside the seam, it may be possible to load or ship a satisfactory product with little or no preparation or cleaning expense. The need for some economical method for recovering coal from thin seams is becoming more pressing as the more profitably mined seams are exhausted. Basic Principles of Auger Mining The principles of the auger, or screw conveyor, have long been used in drilling small diameter holes for blasting and other purposes. These same fundamentals apply to large diameter drilling. However, considerably more attention was given to designing a cutting head that would not pulverize the coal and consequently would require a minimum of power to drive it. The head, as designed for this job, consists of a cylinder 25 in. in diam with steel bits set in 3 positions spaced around the forward rim. A conventional coal drill bit, at the head of a bursting cone in the center of the cylinder, trails the forward rim slightly, see Fig. 1.
