Application of shrinkage stoping methods, without filling, in the mining of large silver-gold orebodies in the Mogollon district, where the ore is hard and wall rocks stand well without timbering and where veins make little water. Vertical and inclined shafts in use with both surface and underground hoisting stations. Storage pockets used on main hoisting levels, with electric signals and telephones for communication. Power is generated by De La Vergne engines having a total sea-level rating of 1540 hp. On account of the remote location of the camp, transportation is an important item of expense, amounting in 1922 to $0.641 per ton of ore milled or $0.265 per ton-mile on all freight hauled. THE Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 37 1/2 mi. in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 52 1/2 mi. and from Tyrone, 57 mi. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 mi., half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always - been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vein in the district.

Pressures developed by the coal during the coking process have been responsible for serious trouble to many companies that operate or build by-product coke ovens. The insidious nature of this trouble is indicated by the fact that oven operators, unless they have ascertained the characteristics of the coals they use, cannot determine the existence of dangerous pressures until after the damage has been done. A rather popular misconception is that ease of pushing of the charge at the completion of the coking period indicates that no dangerous pressure has been developed, but this is far from the truth; pressures developed during the coking period are often completely dissipated by the shrinkage of the charge in the completion of coking, and so any criterion based on the ease of pushing is futile. However, methods of testing coals are available that will definitely distinguish the dangerous coals from those that are safe, and such methods have been brought to a high degree of certainty. The operator should take no risk that involves either a lack of knowledge of the behavior of coals during coking or the failure to believe that certain of the coals or coal mixtures can cause damage to the oven structure. This merely tends to minimize the problem and leads to claims that coking coals of all kinds may be carbonized with no danger of damage to the oven structure provided some particular kind of byproduct oven is used. This lack of appreciation of the true situation is in itself one of the main factors leading to damage of coke-oven structures. Coals that develop more than a certain safe pressure cannot be used in by-product coke ovens without causing damage to the side flue walls. The following paper presents a highly certain method for the measurement of the pressures developed during the carbonization of coal—a method that is the culmination of many years of work on the problem in which a number of methods for the purpose were investigated and used. While actual pressures found may appear to be small when expressed in pounds per square inch, the number of square inches in each oven wall is so large that the total pressure on the oven wall becomes an enormous load.

THE purpose of a symposium, I take it, is to gather together a group interested in a common intellectual field, in order to exchange views, and to appraise the state of knowledge. Symposia are the more successful, the greater the activity in the chosen field and the wider the range of applicability of the information gained. From time to time, as emphasis changes from one field of research to another, a given subject may enjoy popularity and later retire into a scientific somnolence, for fashions change even among engineers and scientists. The subject of this symposium, however, enjoys the advantages of wide applicability and of high current interest and productivity in results. It is a timely subject for a symposium; with much new information, surely metallurgical engineers should now devote an increasing attention to its application to practice. In beginning the symposium, I shall attempt briefly to appraise our basic knowledge in the field, to survey instances of practical usefulness, and to suggest where new work might be most productive of useful results. There are many examples of direct practical application of diffusion knowledge, and it is the purpose of the several papers in this symposium to review these. In this introduction I shall attempt to take a broad view, which, while it will but poorly serve the engineer in the solution of any given problem, may perhaps be of some use in assessing the state of knowledge in this field. RATE OF DIFFUSION Liquid Metals The process of diffusion among liquid metals, of gases in liquid or solid metals, or among solid metals, is ubiquitous, to say the least. The manufacture of alloys by the intermelting of metals, the addition of ferroalloys to molten steel, the deoxidation of molten alloys, all involve diffusion in the liquid state. The oxidation of molten copper for purposes of purification, the unsought oxidation of alloys generally during melting and casting, the reaction of liquid steel with oxidizing slags in the open-hearth furnace, the absorption of nitrogen by liquid steel, particularly in the bessemer furnace, all operate by the diffusion of gases in liquid metals. These processes have not been studied much from the viewpoint of rates of diffusion. Alloys are made by melting metals with stirring and with allowance of time for mixing (which is diffusion) but I know of no studies that seem to define the necessary times, and though in only very rare cases can faulty properties of the finished castings be ascribed to inadequate mixing, and though certainly in most cases, with stirring, the rate of diffusion is adequate to give sufficient mixing, a more quantitative treatment would be good to have. It is not wholly certain that thorough and sufficient mixing is at all times attained, for I suspect that ferroalloy additions to steel, and that additions of aluminum to steel as a deoxidizer, especially in the sampling of steels

The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. INTRODUCTION Longwall mining made its debut in Indian coal mining scene around 1900. Despite this headstart, the application of the method has been slow and halting. Currently, there are some 16 operating longwall faces only in different Indian coalfields contributing to perhaps less than 3 percent of the total underground coal production. Ambitious plans for expansion of longwall mining notwithstanding, apprehensions on the cavability of Indian coalmeasure roof rocks and some unsavoury experiences with face collapses in caved longwalla have impeded wider adoption of the technique. Between 1960 and 1983, some 41 caved longwall faces were worked in Jharia, Raniganj, Karanpura and Korba Coalfields in India, of which 6 faces reportedly had collapsed(1). The first powered support longwall face was started in August 1978 at Monidih colliery which marked a major step forward in the introduction of advanced technological system in Indian coal industry. This paper attempts to analyse critically the experiences with longwall ground control in caved longwall faces in India. Experiences from powered support faces at Monidih, Dhemomain and Pathakhera are synthesized to provide an appraisal of the present status of caved longwall faces under the Indian coalmeasure roofs, which thus far have been characterised as “massive”. The geotechnical site factors at the powered support faces are evaluated and conclusions drawn on the pre-assessment of caving characteristics and support resistance required at the faces.

MOST commercial electrostatic separators utilize the electrical property of conductivity, but although based on the same principles, they are constructed in a variety of forms, a common one being the simple roll type. Some information obtained during an investigation of that type of separator, and which indirectly is applicable to other types, is presented here. NUMERICAL RELATIONSHIP In Fig. I material discharged from hopper 6 is fed onto grounded rotating roll 2. Electrode 3 is at a high electrical potential with respect to roll 2, and any conductive particle in contact with roll 2 therefore acquires an electrical charge of such polarity that, when present in the electrical field, the force on it is in the direction of electrode 3. A detailed description of the charging by conductance as utilized in electrostatic separators may be found in a previous publication.1 As a result of this force, the path of the projected particle is changed in increasing amounts in the direction toward region C as the magnitude of the charge is increased. With the dividing edge 4 the projected particles may be divided into two fractions -those in region C designated as "deflected" or " deflectant " and those in region B designated as "residue." [ ] When material is passed over the roll only once, a complete separation is seldom obtained, therefore most commercial separators contain several roll-separator units in series, and some practical machines use as many as 12. In this paper a "pass" means the passage of material over a single-roll unit. The procedure is to repass either residue B with a low potential on electrode 3 or deflectant C with a high potential on 3. Most electrostatic separations follow a flowsheet of roughing and cleaning either the concentrate or the tailing, on both. No one mill attribute it to the partiality of friendship if I claim for Thomas Sterry Hunt the right to a place among that little band of men whom nature has endowed with what seems an almost magical power of insight into her mysteries. But those of us who knew him well, while me never ceased to wonder at the breadth of his genius, the fertility of his imagination, and the wonderful capacity of his memory, learned that these native powers would have availed little to win him his rank in science, had they not been stimulated by ceaseless mental activity, indomitable perseverance, and unflagging industry. Thomas Sterry Hunt was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 5, 1826. He came on his mother's side from that good old stock which gave to Puritan England the gentle mystic Peter Sterry and that uncompromising preacher Thomas Sterry, who wrote the notable tract, " The Rot among the Bishops " in 1667, and that gave to New England Consider and John Sterry, the mathematicians. While lie was a child the family moved to Poughkeepsie on the Hudson. There the father died when Thomas, the oldest son, was twelve. The mother and her family of six young children returned to the old home in Connecticut. For a short time Thomas attended the public school; but it was for a short time only, as he, thus early, was required to share the burden of the family support and to seek employment. A computer model for predicting the rate of oxidative leaching of copper from fragmented low grade sulfide ores is presented. The model involves the kinetics of the dissolution of chalcopyrite grains and solution diffusion of oxygen within rock pores. Adjustable curve fitting parameters are not used. The model was tested by comparing computed extraction curves with experimental results for a -11 inch ore obtained by block caving and leached at 90°C and 400 psi oxygen for one year at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories.

This paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.14 Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. Purity of Reagents The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.' Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes, This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystalline powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. Results The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the "absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

When oil is takcn from a subsurface structure it is generally accompanied by gas. The gas thus produced represents the 1ighter hydrocarbons present in the original petroleurn accurnulation, which arc, insoluble at the reduced pressures created around a well when it is producing. In some cases the gas accompanying the oil may come from a gas-bearing stratum not in immediate contact with the oil. The amount of gas from the formation accompanying each barrel of oil is called the natural gas factor. Energy Causing Well to Flow The force causing the flow of fluid into a well when it is drilled into an oil-bearing structure is the pressure differential between the well bore and the formation. A pressure differential between the formation and the well may be set up in three different ways, as follows: (1) pressure due to gas in solution or in contact with the oil, (2) hydrostatic pressure due to water in contact with the oil (it may be either bottom or edge water); (3) pressure difference due to forcc of gravity. The greatest source of energy for producing oil from most oil fields, and the one over which the greatest control can be exerted, is the poten-tial energy in the gas under pressure in the formation. In any pool there is but a definite amount of gas available. Part of this gas may be in solution and a part in contact with oil. The amount of gas in solution in each bard of oil depends on the pressure and temperature in the formation and the characteristics of the oil. Whether the gas is in solution or in contact with the oil it is necessary to use the energy it, contains as efficiently as possible in order to obtain the greatest ultimate recovery from the pool. Bush1 states: Gas being the most efficient aid in moving the oil, it is important to prevent more of it from escaping than is necessary to remove the maximum amount of oil from the sands. The conservation of this energy is far more important to the producer of oil than his returns from sales of gas to distributing companies. During the past several years has occurred what, in the light of future events, may aptly be called the rebirth of the acid Bessemer process. The increased attention given to the technical and metallurgical details involved in the production of Bessemer steels has been exceedingly fruitful, and indicates the value of further research and p1ant development. In times like these, when the steelmaking capacity of the country is operating at a maximum rate to supply materials for the national defense program, it behooves the Bessemer operator not only to strive to increase production but also to maintain a high standard of quality. The opportunity is ripe, it seems, to recapture fields of application once considered the birthright of Bessemer steels, but supplanted in recent years by open-hearth grades. This involves cooperation all along the line, from the blast-furnace operator to the metallurgical contact man and salesman. The metallurgist's part in this program involves the study of the many steelmaking variables and the measures necessary to ensure constancy in the finished product. It is equally important that the knowledge gained be disseminated widely to ensure the wise application of Bessemer steels in new fields. The merits of Bessemer steels for certain work are well understood. The combined properties of good weldability, machinabil-ity and stiffness are unique and fully explain the strong entrenchment of Bessemer steels in certain fields; e.g., skelp for small butt-weld conduit, screw steels machined in automatics, and certain tin-plate applications. It is the purpose of this paper to review briefly the physical properties of Bessemer steels as contrasted with those of open-hearth steels, to discuss control measures now employed in the making of Bessemer steel, and to consider the advantages derived from the use of these control measures. Physical Properties oF Bessemer vs. Open-hearth Steels A number of Bessemer blows and open-hearth heats were tested for tensile strength, ductility and impact strength. The steels selected were confined to sections from 3/4 to 1 1/4-in. diameter, inclusive, and the carbon content covered was sufficient to yield parallel ranges in ultimate strength for the comparison. Other factors, such as the extent of deoxidation of the steel and variations in chemistry, were kept as comparable as possible. Machined test pieces of 0.505-in. diameter with an 8-in. gauge length were pulled. The data obtained are shown in Fig. I, ultimate strength being plotted against carbon content. This graph shows that for equivalent carbon content Bessemer steel has on the average 15,000 lb. per sq. in. greater tensile strength and, conversely, for the same tensile strength Bessemer steel requires on the average 0.14 per cent less carbon. IN November 1939, on behalf of the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co., the author undertook the study of the problem of utilizing the dolomite of northwestern Ohio for the manufacture of calcined magnesia suitable for use in refractories. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the unfailing assistance and encouragement throughout this work from the executive and technical staff of Harbison-Walker Refractories Company. The dolomite of the Niagara formation that is exposed or near the surface of a wide area in northwestern Ohio1 constitutes a vast supply of almost pure dolomite. It offers a virtually unlimited supply of cheap raw material of uniform dependable analysis for the manufacture of magnesia. A typical analysis of dolomite from the vicinity of Luckey, Ohio, follows: [ ] Brines containing magnesium chloride or sea water can be reacted with calcined dolomite to produce magnesia.2,3 In such reactions the MgCl2 of the brine supplies some of the magnesia and the amount of dolomite required is thereby reduced by an equivalent amount, but brines of commercial importance containing magnesium chloride are some distance away from the purest grades of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio. It was decided therefore to concentrate upon the development of a suitable process for separating the lime and magnesia of dolomite, depend¬ing upon the dolomite itself as the sole source of magnesia. This would make it possible to place a plant at the dolomite quarry, thus eliminating the cost of transporting the stone and also rendering the calcined magnesia available at a most convenient production point, considering the cost of delivery throughout the steel industry. The selection of a process depending solely upon the dolomite as a source of magnesia also necessarily entails production of the lime content of the dolomite as a by-product. It was recognized that if such a lime by-product could be produced in a suitable form, a plant location in northwestern Ohio would also be advantageous for marketing the lime. The problem, therefore, was the discovery and development of a low-cost process for separating the magnesia and lime of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio and producing each in a form relatively free from the other, and meeting the respective requirements of established markets. In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. Crouch's Pits are one hundred yards north of Cottrell's. This firm employ from 80 to 90 hands, and raise from 8 to 900 bushels per day. They are now
