Low-grade manganiferous iron ores of Minnesota's Cuyuna Range, in general, do not respond to conventional mineral dressing techniques because of their fine-grained texture. Reducing these ores to magnetite with subsequent magnetic separation and flotation have not given satisfactory results because, in many instances, concentrate grade and manganese recovery are low. Metallization of iron and concurrent reduction of higher manganese oxides to MnO, as in the R-N process, followed by recovery of iron by magnetic separation and manganese by leaching, seems to be a technically feasible process. High-temperature x-ray diffraction studies show that solid-state reactions between iron and manganese, with the formation of intermediate iron-manganese oxides, occur during reduction and affect recovery of both iron and manganese from the final product. Solid state reactions also occur between FeO, MnO, and SiO, at temperatures as low as 900°C. The kinetics of these reactions are such that they become an important factor in the treatment of ores by the R-N process. These investigations suggest a temperature and gas composition cycle that would maximize both iron and manganese recovery. During the past ten years, iron ore shipments from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota have decreased sharp1y. Because of adverse grade, structure, and cost, many Cuyuna ores are no longer competitive with high-grade foreign ores and domestic pellets. The low-grade manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, in general, do not respond to conventional mineral dressing techniques because of their fine-grained texture. Reducing these ores to magnetite for subsequent magnetic separation and flotation has not given satisfactory results because concentrate grade and manganese recovery are often low. However, a technically feasible process appears to be metallization of the iron and concurrent reduction of manganese oxides to MnO with recovery of metallic iron by magnetic separation and extraction of manganese from the tailings by leaching. In 1962 the R-N Corp., with a grant from the Area Redevelopment Administration, conducted an amenability study of the metallization of manganiferous iron ore from the Cuyuna Range. The results of this preliminary investigation were sufficient to interest the Economic Development Administration in sponsoring further studies of the process with emphasis on secondary recovery of manganese from the nonmagnetic tailings. Inasmuch as the metallization process has considerable influence on the final form of the manganese - its texture and distribution between the magnetic concentrate and nonmagnetic tailings-the investigation included a study of metallization of the ore as well. Therefore, the investigation conducted at the Mines Experiment Station covered three interrelated phases: (1) laboratory R-N roasting studies and magnetic separation tests, (2) laboratory chemical extraction experiments of the nonmagnetic tailings, and (3) a mineralogical study of the crude ores and their various roast products. High-temperature x-ray diffraction investigation of the Fe-Mn-Si0,-0, system is the main topic of this paper and an extension of the mineralogical work. GENERAL GEOLOGY The Cuyuna Range is known for its complicated geologic structure, complex orebodies, and generally indifferent response to attempts at conventional beneficiation. Several geologists have made intensive studies of the Cuyuna Range, including Leithl (1907), ~darns' (1910), Zapffe3 (1925), Grout and Wolff4 (1955), and schmidt5 (1963), whose study was the most comprehensive of all. The Range is covered with glacial deposits - till, out-wash, and lake sediments -up to 250 ft thick. Bedrock stratigraphic units of the Cuyuna Range consist of three tightly folded Precambrian sedimentary formations. The lower unit is the Mahnomen formation, composed of 2000 or more feet of argillite, slate, siltstone, and quartzite. The middle unit is the Trommald formation, which varies from 45 to 500 ft in thickness and comprises the major iron-bearing formation. The upper unit is the Rabbit Lake formation, consisting of over 2000 it of argillite, slate, and interbedded lenses of lean iron formation. The drop tester has proved an invaluable tool for the investigation of percussion drilling in the laboratory in "slow motion". It has allowed the process of rock penetration by impact to be studied a single blow at a time. In the present work, the relation of cratering to indexing has been determined under conditions simulating those in the bottom of the hole at atmospheric pressure. Indexed blows form craters which are influenced by others adjacent to them. Two unique effects are involved: (1) the provision of additional free faces in proximity to the point of impact and (2) the creation of subsurface damage by the previous blow(s). Both have a pronounced influence on the volume of rock removed per blow, which governs the rate of penetration in actual drilling. The emphasis in this study was placed on determining effects of index distance and impact energy on crater volume when blows were struck on a previorusly "drilled" or damaged surface, a situation most representative of down-hole conditions. The results indicated that (I) the optimum index distance on a damaged surface is greater than on a fresh, undamaged rock surface; (2) the volume of rock broken at optimum index distance is about the same for both surface conditions with die-shaped chisels but tends to be greater on a cratered surface with wedges; (3) the optimum index distance and maximum crater volume are proportional to the energy level; (4) at a given energy level, the volume of rock broken by dies generally exceeds that by wedges; and (5) maximum crater volume varies, approximately, inversely with width of die but is nearly independent of included angle of wedge. INTRODUCTION This is the third of a series l,2 of papers reporting on one phase of a continuing program of drilling research being conducted in the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State U. The phase under consideration is crater geometry — blow energy relations in percussion drilling. While the previous papers have discussed mainly craters produced by single blows, indexed-blow studies are the subject of this paper. The basic mechanism of drilling under study here — that of penetration of a chisel-shaped bit subjected to impact — is the one employed in probably 90 per cent of all rock drilling in mining, percussion drilling. It also forms the fundamental action in nearly all oil well drilling with the so-called rotary (roller-bit) method. Here, the action is more complex, however, and may in actuality comprise rotary-percussion drilling. Certainly, the down-hole air and mud hammer drills, which superimpose percussion on rotation, belong in this latter category. In any event, impact blows constitute one of the principal mechanisms in the vast majority of drilling, mining or petroleum, and it is essential in drilling research to study percussion in all its basic aspects. Percussion drilling can be simulated in the laboratory by means of an impact drop tester. Striking one blow at a time with chisel-shaped bits, the drop tester permits study of most of the parameters in the drilling process except blow frequency and the interrelationship of certain variables. Single-blow craters, the simplest to produce, allow the determination of basic relationships, such as volume vs blow energy; while indexed craters most closely resemble the action in real drilling and provide data for the establishment of optimum operating criteria. Indexed-blow craters are those which are influenced by others in proximity. The simplest case to visualize, and the one studied in detail here, is that in which a given crater is formed adjacent and parallel to a previous crater, such that the second crater breaks into the first. A more complex situation usually exists downhole, where indexing is achieved by rotation of a radial-winged or rolling-cutter bit. But, admittedly, the phenomenon of indexing is more likely to be understood eventually if it is first studied in its simplest form, that related to parallel craters. Limited research has been conducted on indexed blows. The most complete study was that by Simon, 3,4 who proposed universal indexing curves to relate the important variables. A new recovery process for producing oil under both secondary and tertiary conditions utilizes the unique properties of micellar solutions (also known as microemulsions, swollen micelles, and soluble oils). These solutions, which displace 100 percent of the oil in the reservoir contacted, can be driven through the reservoir with water and are stable in the presence of reservoir water and rock. Basic components of micellar solutions are surfactant, hydrocarbon and water. They may also contain small amounts of electrolytes and co surfactants such as a1cohol.r. The specific reservoir application dictates the type and concentration of each component. A salient feature of [he process is the capability for mobility control. Micellar solution slug mobility, by way of viscosity control, is made equal to or less than the combined oil and water mobility. Mobility control continues with a mobility buffer that prevents drive water from contacting the micellar solution. Laboratory and field flooding have proven that the process is technically feasible and that surfactant losses by adsorption on porous media are small. Introduction projects are under way to recover the maximum amount of oil under the most favorable economic conditions.' : New techniques are being developed to increase oil recovery,3" Polymer solutions are becoming an important means of controlling mobility in a waterflood. Thermal methods such as in-situ combustion and steam injection are being used in reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. Surfactant flooding is receiving attention as a method of reducing interfacial tension to increase recovery.*'" Exotic recovery processes have been considered primarily for ' perations. Economics are unfavorable in most cases for tertiary recovery. studies at the Denver Research Center of the Marathon oil CO. have led to a new oil recovery method.* Micellar solutions (sometimes called microemulsions, swollen micelles, and soluble oils) are used to recover oil by miscible-type waterflooding. Basically, these solutions contain surfactant, hydrocarbon, and water. The method can be used in either secondary or tertiary operations. First, thc concept of thc process is considered in terms of the requirements for an effective miscible waterflood ing operation. Next, micellar solution properties are described including structure, composition, and phase behavior with reservoir fluids. Fluid characteristics are then considered as related to mobility control, and, finally, laboratory and field results are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the process. Concept of the Process Unit displacement efficiency and conformance determine the effectiveness of any oil recovery mechanism. In theory, a miscible waterflood should be capable of a 100-percent unit displacement efficiency with a correspondingly high conformance. Requirements for the slug of a miscible waterflood include (1) 100-percent displacement of oil in the reservoir contacted, (2) controllable mobility, (3) the capability of being driven through the reservoir with water, (4) a low unit cost to enhance economics, and (5) the ability to remain stable in the presence of reservoir water and rock. Micellar solutions satisfy requirements for the slug of a miscible waterflood process. Our discovery that these solutions acted as though they were miscible by displacing all fluids in the reservoir and by being displaced by water solved the miscibility problem. Adequate mobility control is possible by variations in solution viscosity through compositional changes. Economic requirements are met since micellar solution costs below $6/bbl appear possible, Mi cellar solutions stabilize surfactant in the presence of reservoir rock and water, thus reducing the importance of the problem of surfactant loss by adsorption. Fig. 1 illustrates schematically how these solutions are used. Operations start with injection of a micellar solution slug that serves as the oil displacing agent. Next, a mobility buffer of either a water-external emulsion or water solution containing polymer (thickened water) is injected to protect the slug from water invasion. Finally, drive water (water used in a regular waterflood) is injected to propel the slug and mobility buffer through the reservoir. Reservoir oil and water are displaced ahead of the slug, and a stabilized oil and water bank develops as shown in Fig. 1. Stabilized bank saturations are independent of original oil and water saturations. This means that, for a particular type of reservoir, the displacement mechanism is the same under secondary and tertiary recovery conditions. Oil is produced first in a secondary operation. For tertiary conditions, water is produced first. Movement of the slug through the reservoir is stabilized by the mobility buffer. Among the iron-bearing ores of the world, the titaniferous iron sands of New Zealand are probably the least known to American engineers. This is not surprising in view of the fact that American ironmasters look with disfavor on any, even domestic, ores containing over 1 per cent. titanium. The possibilities of smelting titanium-bearing ores in the blast furnace are still undetermined, but the problem of their efficient reduction is becoming more important each year. There seems to be little inclination on the part of American furnace operators to tackle this problem, and they will no doubt continue to utilize the non-titanium ores at their command, leaving research and experiment to those countries not so fortunately endowed. New Zealand has, however, been intensely interested in her deposits of titanium-bearing iron sand, and during the last 50 years considerable English and New Zealand capital has been expended on this problem. The extent of the New Zealand iron-sand deposits is almost beyond measure. From Patea north to Manuka Heads, along almost the entire west coast of the North Island, these deposits exist. Wherever there is beach sand along this 300 mi. of coast line, the sand is iron bearing. It varies considerably in grade; but wherever the contour of the coast affords small bays and inlets, large dunes are found that are remarkably uniform in quality. Several of these large deposits, especially those at New Plymouth and Patea, are noted for their high iron content. The dune at New Plymouth runs between 55 and 60 per cent. of metallic iron; the panning action of the prevailing westerly winds and northwesterly currents has no doubt resulted in this concentration. Whatever the origin of this material may be, there is no doubt that deposition is going on continuously. At New Plymouth, a small artificial harbor, protected from the drifting sand by a large breakwall, has been dredged. Here sailing vessels have for years been loaded with iron sand for ballast by means of a crane and grab bucket operated from the wall of the breakwater. Thousands of tons of sand have been removed from this spot yet each succeeding storm renews the supply. The sand dune shown in Fig. 1 has been tested to a depth of 50 ft. (15 m.) without losing its

The practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i. e., heating to 750° to 800" C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was disclosed by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev~,(~)$ although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

The history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers in the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribes in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections. It is universal in South Africa to speak of the Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a a boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

By means of the C-Sic thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. Commercial Development of This Device Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, procedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; nevertheless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made, inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metallurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and financial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-Sic thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper. GRAVITATIONAL measurements made by means of the Eötvös torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous .anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eötvös torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor.

No oil territory in the world has been so rich in large producing wells, in a comparatively small area, as the Baku field. Particularly is this true of the Bibi Eibat field, which formerly produced millions of "poods," of " gusher," or as it is called in Russia, " fountain " oil. The Bibi Eibat and Balachany fields have been exhausted of gas and ruined by water, but the Surachany and Benegadi fields are still fountain territories and many outlying districts that have only been prospected produce rich fountains. The method of controlling fountains, or gushers, is the result of growth, along with the Russian system of drilling, where large diameters and riveted casing have been in vogue. The screw casing is seldom used except to exclude water. Formerly the method of finishing wells and the condition of the casing at the top of the well would not permit the use of gates, manifolds, and connections as is standard elsewhere. The life of the flowing wells is very short, particularly those 10 in. (25 cm.) or more in diameter, which produce large quantities of sand and often flow for but a few days and are then a complete loss. More than 1,000,000 poods in 24 hr. have been claimed in several instances, but in no case was the flow for more than a few days. The oil sands of this district are free uncemented sands and vary in thickness from paper thin to a maximum of 10 ft. (3 m.). The sands are interlaid with strata of soft clay. In spite of this, the practice has been to drill into such sands and produce from the open hole without screen or liners. Sometimes the casing is set below the oil sand but in this case holes from 2 ½ to 3 in. in diameter are drilled opposite the oil sand, which would not have the effect of a screen.

The specific conductance and its temperature dependence were measured over the entire composition range of the molten Cu2S-CuCI system. At a typical temperature of 1200°C, 10 rnol pet of the ionically conducting CuCl reduced the specific conductance from about 77 ohm-lcm-l for pure Cu2S to about 32 ohm -1cm -1, and 50 mol pet CuCl reduced the conductance to that for pure CuCI—about 5 ohm 1cm1. The nature of electrical conduction in molten Cu2S, FeS, CuCI, and mixtures was studied by measuring the current efficiency of electrolysis at about 1100°C. The Cu2S, FeS, and mattes were found to conduct exclusively by electrons, but addition of 1 5 wt pet CUS to Cu2S produces a small amount of electrolysis. Addition of CuCl to Cu2S suppresses electronic conduction, and ionic conduction reaches almost 100 pet at a CuCl concentration of about 50 mol pet. These facts are interpreted in terms of electron energy level diagrams by analogy to the situation in solids. RESULTS of electrical conductivity studies on molten Cu-FeS mattes as a function of composition and temperature have been reported.' The specific conductances ranged from about 100 ohm-' cm-' for pure Cu2S to 1500 ohm-' cm-1 for pure FeS. This is in sharp contrast with the low specific conductance of molten ionic salts for which the transfer of electricity is by migration of ions in the field. In general, these ionically conducting molten salts, such as NaC1, KC1, CuC1, etc., have a specific conductance of the order of magnitude of 5 ohm-' cm-'. It was concluded on the basis of this evidence that molten FeS and Cu,S exhibit electronic conduction. Pure molten FeS has a small negative temperature coefficient of specific conductance, resembling metallic conduction, while pure molten Cu2S has a small positive temperature coefficient, resembling semi-conduction. The molten Cu2S-FeS mattes follow a roughly additive rule of mixtures, both with respect to specific conductance and temperature coefficient. Savelsberg2 has studied the electrolysis of molten Cu2S and Cu2S + FeS. He concluded that while molten Cu2S is an electronic conductor, there is some ionic conduction in molten Cu2S + FeS3 owing to the formation of the molecular compound 2Cu2S.FeS and its dissociation into Cu1 and FeS2-1 ions. The present work does not verify his results. Chipman, Inouye, and Tomlinson" have studied the specific conductance of molten FeO and report a high specific conductance, about 200 ohm-1 cm-1 of the same order of magnitude as that found for molten mattes, and a positive temperature coefficient. They interpret these results in terms of p-type semiconduction in the ionic liquid by analogy to the situation in solid FeO.1 imnad and Derne' detected appreciable ionization in molten FeO by means of electrolytic cell efficiency measurements. In order to verify the conclusion that electrical conduction in molten Cu2S and mattes is electronic, and to gain further insight into the structure of molten sulfides, the following investigations were carried out in the present work: 1) The specific conductance, s of the molten system Cu2S-CuC1 was measured as a function of temperature over the entire composition range. As discussed later, molten CuCl is an ionic substance. It was thought that if molten Cu2S were simply ionic in nature, addition of small amounts of CuCl might not have a catastrophic effect in lowering the high conductance of the Cu2S. On the other hand, if much electronic conduction occurs, addition of the ionic CuCl should have a large effect in destroying the electronic conduction. 2) The electrolytic cell efficiency of the following molten systems was measured at about 1100°C in specially designed cells: Cu3; Cu2S + FeS, 50:50 by wt; FeS; Cu2S + CuS, 15 wt pet; Cu2S + CuC1, 5.9 to 46.4 mol pet; and CuC1. Nearly 75 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank1 standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American standard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

For a long time it has been known that it is possible to deduce conclusions about the physical constitution of the interior of the earth from the records of natural earthquakes obtained by stationary seismographs. In view of this fact it is surprising how late, relatively speaking, geologic prospecting by seismic methods has been taken up, although the first suggestion was made 40 years ago—that travel-time curves of artificial explosions might be used for the study of the change of the velocity of seismic waves as depth. Further suggestions of practical applications of artificial explosions for geologic purposes were made by Belar12 by von dem Borne,3 by Benndorf and by Galitzin,5 but it was not .until 1919 that Mintrop obtained a patent on the seismic prospecting method which he has applied commercially on a large scale ever since. Dr. Mintrop came to this country with his method at about 1923. Since that time, several American oil companies have developed seismographs of the mechanical type for the vertical component similar to that of Mintrop's (Humble Oil Co., Dr. Ricker). Other consulting geophysical companies designed other types of seismic devices, the simplest of them for the recording of the first impulse being the geophone (McCol-lum Geophone Co.). The galvanometric recording method as first proposed by Galitzin is being used (Geophysical Research Corpn.?) and use is being made even of the piezoelectric properties of crystals for portable seismographs (F. Rieber). There is such an enormous variety of all kinds of portable seismographs, vibrographs, accelerographs, etc., that it is difficult to decide just what kind is preferable. Unfortunately, nothing has been published as yet about American designs of portable seismographs, except the Wood-Anderson torsion-seismometer. IT has been shown by numerous studies that the orientations of new metal crystals are determined by the orientations of the crystals in the original matrix, whether these new crystals are formed by recrystalliza-tion, by precipitation from solid solutions, or by transitions in the solid state. The orientations of crystals formed by recrystallization of cold-worked worked metals that bear preferred orientations are occasionally simply related to the initial preferred orientation; often, however, the relation-ship is not simple, but complicated and obscure in origin.1 The orientations of crystals formed by precipitation from solid solu-tions have been shown by many studies in this and other countries to be determined by the orientation of the crystals of the solid solution stable at the higher temperatures, though here again complicated cases have been found and no general theory is available .2 Related to this latter class

In the present day manufacture of glass nearly pure quartz sands are used almost exclusively as the source of the silica, which is the major constituent of all common varieties of glass. Ordinary soda-lime, such as bottle, common tableware, plate, and window glasses, contains from 65 to 75 per cent. of silica. Occurrence Glass sands occur in nature either in the form of loose, unconsolidated sediments or in deposits in which the individual grains have been more or less thoroughly bound together by some cementing agent so as to form sandstones. While deposits of sand and sandstones occur both widely and abundantly distributed, deposits that are sufficiently free from other constituents than quartz grains, so that they can be employed in the manufacture of the better grades of glass, are, comparatively speaking, of rare occurrence. The major portion of the glass sand produced in the United States comes from sandstones. In order to be suitable for glass sand, they should be rather friable. The rock should break down readily along the cementing material between the grains and should not break across the grains rather than along the bond. Some of the sandstones used are so friable that only light shots of slow-burning dynamite are necessary to disintegrate them sufficiently for hydraulic mining, while others have to be passed through crushers in order to disintegrate the rock into its individual grains. MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION An ideal glass sand is made up entirely of grains of the mineral quartz free from inclusions of foreign substances. Sands containing 100 per cent. silica, however, are not found in nature, although some very nearly approach this composition.

A two-dimensional, three-phasereservoir simulator was programmed for a large memory digital computer. It was designed to provide a practical solution to describing the complex physical relation between the natural forces and the physical properties of a heterogeneous reservoir when subjected to a specific set of conditions. A reservoir study is briefly described to illustrate application of the model. A full volumetric account of three phases (oil, gas and water) is performed simultaneously throughout an integration net representing the reservoir. Absence of one or two of the phases is treated as a special case of the more general situation. Expansion (or contraction) of all phases, including rock expansion, is performed so that the pressure calculation is the general unsteady-state case. To account for the large variations of subsurface elevation encountered in some reseruoirs, and to allow for segregation of the various phases, a gravity head term is included in the basic drive potential. Appropriate fluid and rock properties are used in polynominal surface form (functions of pressure and/or depth) or they can be entered as space variables at each position of the integration net. An unsteady-state water influx calculation, based on the method of van Everdingen and Hurst, l was connected to the boundary of the matrix to simulate aquifers of various sizes. In addition to reservoir calculations, three-phase fluid flow from the producing depth to the wellhead, including provisions for gas lift, was incorporated in the simulator. A workover routine was also built which can automatically switch to a different set of production relations when a gas-oil ratio or water fraction reaches a limit; or it can shut-in the well if prescribed. INTRODUCTION This paper describes a reservoir engineering mathematical simulator used to represent the complex interaction of natural forces and physical properties of a reservoir during natural depletion or with various injection schemes. The simulator, which was programmed for a large memory digital computer, is a two-dimensional calculation which handles three mobile fluid phases simultaneously (oil, gas and water). Basic requisites for the method are individual well production and pressure data, hydrocarbon fluid properties, geological data (producing depth and net sand), capillary pressure data, relative permeability data and permeability and porosity information. Matching the past performance of a combination drive reservoir often has yielded information concerning continuity and the validity of basic data. Detailed predictions of future performance can be made for continuation of current depletion methods (natural depletion) as well as for various types of recovery by gas or water injection. Combination injection cases and pattern studies can also be performed. Workover programs, gas lift and different types of artificial lift programs have been investigated using a technique similar to that described by Kern and Nicholson2 except that conditions of pressure and saturation at the block within which the well is located are used rather than average reservoir conditions. Drilling additional wells to optimize profit was explored, both as to number and location, by placing wells at different spots within the reservoir matrix. Special depletion processes can be examined, such as upstructure drainage and lateral (or strike) waterfloods in thin oil columns. In one case the mathematics of the simulator were modified to calculate the displacement in the vertical plane rather than in the horizontal plane. In this manner specific reservoir problems can be studied, such as coning of gas and/or water around production points, fingering along permeable stringers or, more generally, frontal advances in a heterogeneous section.
