During recent years nickel has had an increasingly important role as an alloying element in the copper-tin bronzes. Nickel additions not only produce better casting alloys but also make alloys whose properties can be varied by precipitation hardening; thus leading to increased commercial application of copper-nickel-tin alloys. Recent investigations have indicated a decrease in the solubility of tin in the alpha phase as the annealing temperature is lowered and as the nickel content is increased within certain limits. A further change caused by the nickel additions is produced in the excess phase of the copper-tin bronzes. The alpha plus delta eutectoid is replaced by a clear precipitated constituent in the alloys containing up to 15 per cent tin and not less than 1 per cent nickel. This paper has a dual purpose. The first is to present a new determination of the alpha-phase boundary in alloys containing from 0 to 20 per cent nickel, together with the liquidus and solidus temperatures above that field. The second purpose is to give the equilibrium conditions existing in alloys exceeding the alpha phase containing up to 31 per cent tin and 5 per cent nickel, so that the disappearance of the alpha plus delta eutectoid constituent may be explained. After considering the earlier investigations of the related alloy systems and the experimental procedure used in this investigation, the alloys will be discussed in groups as separate quasibinary systems containing constant amounts of nickel. The systems considered contain 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 per cent nickel. The straight copper-tin system was reinvesti-gated in order to establish a foundation on which to build the remaining material. The 1 per cent nickel alloys studied give the relations existing in the region of the eutectoid transformation between the copper-tin system and the 2 per cent nickel copper-tin system which has been investigated in detail. THE solubility of nitrogen in iron and steel has been of considerable interest due to the role of nitrogen in strain-aging and in quench-aging. It is generally considered that quench-aging is the result of precipitation of carbide and nitride particles from supersaturated solid solution, while strain-aging results from the segregation of carbon and nitrogen atoms to dislocations.1-9 The rate of strain-aging is controlled primarily by the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution and the temperature. Mineralized breccia pipes, because of their widespread occurrence and close structural relations to some of the world's great ore bodies, are objects of unusual interest for mining engineers and geologists. The literature contains many references to them, but it is questionable whether their genetic significance and economic importance have been sufficiently emphasized. The purpose here is to stress these features, relating them to the field facts, for the particular benefit of younger generations of geologists who, confronted with and sometimes confused by the growing flood of geochemical, geophysical, and other specialized research approaches, may be reassured that mappable field relations remain a foremost guide to a better understanding of ore deposits. A mineralized breccia pipe is a pre-mineral, breccia structure which has controlled the circulation and deposition of subsequently introduced mineralization. It is composed of relatively rotated angular or rounded rock fragments, set in a mineralized matrix. A pipe in plan outline may be circular, oval or approach polygonal form, with a steep to vertical axis proportionately much greater than its horizontal dimensions. The pipe is a steeply plunging, chimneylike mass of brecciated rock cemented with later minerals. Rock breaks in a variety of ways and complete fragmentation often occurs without rotation of individual pieces. A finely broken rock mass may fit into a tight jig-saw pattern, each fragment having mutually concordant boundaries with its neighbors. The result is a stockwork of innumerable reticulating cracks that, once cemented by mineralization, forms a complicated intersecting network of individually insignificant but collectively important seams and veinlets. Stockwork fracturing among its many forms takes the shape of domes of subsidence, fracture pipes, and related peripheral zones around and over breccia columns, or a combination of any of these structures. The significance of the mineralized breccia pipe is that it represents the extreme or climactic expression of a structural type which has a variety of mutations including subsidence domes, fracture pipes, and other stockwork zones all with related ancestry and similar to dissimilar characteristics. These allied and associated structures hold an answer to the fundamental question of the origin of many important ore deposits. CANANEA-TYPE LOCALITY FOR BRECCIA PIPES The Cananea district is characterized by an unusual development of mineralized breccia pipes. It is an important copper producer located in Sonora, Mexico, a short distance southwest of Bisbee, Arizona, and at the southerly limit of the great porphyry copper belt of the southwestern U.S. Cananea's rocks consist of Paleozoic quartzite and limestone capped unconformably by a thick series of volcanics including andesitic flows, tuffs, and agglomerates. These rocks have been intruded by a deep-seated granite with related basic and acid differentiates including dikes and plugs of quartz mon-zonite porphyry. Mineralization coincides with a northwesterly trending belt of these intrusives which break upward into and through the sedimentary-volcanic rock sequence. The district has weakly defined tectonic alignments in a northwesterly direction with subordinate intersecting fracture elements, but lacks important faulting or fissuring to provide throughgoing avenues for the upward circulation of mineralizing fluids. Thus, as will be discussed in subsequent paragraphs, the alternate way in which late magmatic and hydro-thermal derivatives of the parent magma reached the near-surface zone was by excavating their own breccia pipe channelways. There are numerous stages of breccia pipe development, related both in time and space to magmatic activity. A compilation of similarities and differences in various pipes suggests that proximity or remoteness of a demonstrable or inferred magmatic source provides an orderly genetic basis for describing the following representative types. Cananea Duluth Type: There are no intrusive rocks within or close to the Cananea Duluth pipe; therefore, the existence of any deep-seated magma that may have been related to its formation must be inferred. The structure is an oval-shaped ring 1200 x 300 ft in plan dimensions, cutting steeply across low angle, bedded tuffs, and other volcanics; it has been developed by drill holes to a depth of 2000 ft below the surface. The ore follows the periphery of the pipe and is composed of intensely brecciated rock which is cemented by minor galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, quartz, carbonates, and adularia. There is a definite vertical zoning of sulfides with less galena, continuing sphalerite, and increasing chalcopyrite at deeper levels. Within the interior of the ore ring, the brecciation becomes progressively weaker and coarser, the whole indicating relatively gentle slumping with broken, thin tuff beds pre-

The regular, bottom-blown Bessemer converter of the present day is a modification of previous forms, and most of the latest proposed modifications of it are merely returns to former types which Ressemer discarded. That he tried almost every conceivable method of blowing iron, with tuyeres at almost every possible position or angle, is well known; and it is to be supposed that he was familiar with the advantages of each type, since he finally settled on that form which has not been improved upon hitherto, for the purposes for which converters will generally be used. Modifications have been tried along two lines: In the arrangement of tuyeres, and in the manner of carrying out the process with tuyeres still blowing vertically upward through the bath. While they have all failed in general competition with the regular modern type of vessel, some of them have found special fields in which they have held their own. The most notable example is in the steel-casting industry, and especially in that part of it concerned with the manufacture of castings which require very hot or very fluid metal, or supply a demand of constantly varying physical or chemical requirements. In this industry the small converters occupy a field between that of the crucible-process and that of the open-hearth process, arid have won a place for themselves in France, England, America, Russia and other countries, which they bid fair to retain until either a new method is discovered of producing cheaply very hot, fluid steel, or the open-hearth process is so improved that very hot steel may be made with it at lower cost of repairs to lining arid roof.

This symposium is designed to marshal a state-of-the-art account of approaches and solutions to problems arising out of waterlogging and salinization in the world's largest irrigation system which was dismembered by legal beheading of the Eastern Rivers under the lndus Waters Treaty of 1960. In this introduction, the geological and historical backgrounds of surface waters and groundwaters in the Indus Basin are presented with a summary of remedial measures undertaken and proposed to combat waterlogging and salinization. At a time when water-resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, a study devoted solely to the Indus River Basin may seem to require an apologia. None is offered, however, for three major reasons: (1) Although the Indus is a single river basin, it is one of great magnitude and importance. The Indus River, which comes from Himalayan sources to form part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, is vital to agriculture and hydroelectric power in the thickly populated northern subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. (2) The Indus has become a plexus of extraordinary problems since the dismemberment of the world's largest irrigation system of which it was a part. The break-up of this system occurred with the legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. (3) Th River Basin has been the target of a Herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization that now threaten it with a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canal on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage. To cope with this situation, there has been a possibly unprecedented concentration of domestic and international engineering and scientific talent on the Indus and its problems (about a score of organizations by recent count). To marshal a state-of-the-art account of their approaches and solutions is the purpose of this Symposium. The coordinated effort now being made on a variety of fronts under the general supervision of West Pakistan Water and Power Authority (WAPDA) is directed toward the modification and control of interactions and relationships between geological materials — soils, water and its salt balance, and air —in what has been termed a huge "underground lake" in an alluvial basin. The problem is an intriguing one in that a highly complicated case history of river-course changes visible in the present surface must be projected downwards through Recent and Pleistocene sediments in order to decipher the environmental controls of deposition in terms of vertical and lateral variations in lithology and patterns. Such studies must be extended to compaction, deformation, and fabrics of the alluvium. Geohydrology is often defined as groundwater hydrology. As employed herein, it includes the distribution, quality, and behavior of surface and subsurface waters, including their evolution, vagaries, and geological, climatological, and botanical milieux." GEOGRAPHY The Indus (Sanskrit, Sindhu = river) rises at nearly 17,000 ft above the sea in the glaciers on the northern slopes of Kailas Parbat, Tibet. It is about 1800 miles long and has a total drainage area estimated at 372,000 sq miles. The average discharge is 196,000 cfs at mouth. Leaving the Plateau of Tibet, the river flows at a level which is miles above the sea, and in places miles below Himalayan peaks, in a structurally controlled northwestward course. I. INTRODUCTION IT is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its -magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current Josses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that; indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use.

When annealed carbon, or low-alloy, steels are suitably heated the ferrite (alpha iron solid solution) and the carbide, of which they are composed, react together to form a single solid solution of carbon (and other elements) in gamma iron (austenite). This reaction may begin only at a certain minimum temperature called the eutectoid temperature. The first ferrite and carbide thus to react together do so in definite proportions known as the eutectoid composition. With further heating the original constituent that is present in excess is dissolved in the austenite until exhausted. Whether the excess constituent be ferrite (hypoeutectoid steels) or carbide (hypereutectoid steels) the procedure is much the same, and upon slow cooling the homogeneous austenite expels the excess of either (proeutectoid ferrite or carbide) until the eutectoid composition is reached. Thus the reaction upon heating is strictly reversed upon cooling and accordingly an equilibrium diagram of this process may be constructed. Such an equilibrium diagram concerns itself only with the temperatures involved and with the proportions and compositions of the phases developed under conditions that suffice to permit equilibrium. Specifically it has no concern for the type or mode of distribution of these constituents nor with any extra-equilibrium conditions such as undercooling, which is almost universally encountered in metals. Actually, however, of great importance is the sluggishness toward equilibration caused by the not inconsiderable time involved in diffusion. Thus instead of the theoretical transformation point AF, we find for a certain rate of heating or cooling the use of the designations Ar and Ac (transformation temperature found on cooling and upon heating). These figures obviously have no particular meaning except as measured and expressed for a definite heating or cooling rate, and represent the apparent temperature displacement caused by an inadequate time allowance. IN ingots of silicon-killed carbon steel made without addition of - aluminum, transparent spherical or nearly spherical inclusions, up to about 0.15-mm diameter, are generally present. They may be glassy or crystallized, wholly or partially. In steels of high carbon contents they consist of silica,4,12 in steels of lower carbon contents arid, in consequence, higher oxygen contents, of iron-manganese-silicate with higher iron and manganese contents the lower the carbon content. Small silicate inclusions, about 0.01 mm or smaller, may occur, just as sulphide inclusions do, in portions that have been the last or nearly the last to freeze,10,12,17 this location being verified by primary etching.10 Hence, it may be concluded that they have separated from liquid steel that has become enriched in oxygen through segregation during freezing. Silicate inclusions with a diameter larger than about 0.02 mm appear, at least in ingots of moderate size, to be distributed at random in relation to the primary structure and therefore may be assumed to have existed as droplets in the liquid steel before freezing started at the point in question. The average size of such large inclusions has been found to increase toward the axis17 and their amount to increase from the top downward in the axial region .2,10 It has been assumed that this accumulation is a result of the droplets being brought down by the slowly settling metal crystals.2 It has been suggested that large silicate inclusions generally form,6 or may form," by coagulation of smaller ones, or by small drops being caught by larger ones during the rising of the latter.9 The occasional occurrence of a large inclusion surrounded by a swarm of small ones has been taken as a proof of this mechanism but, as suggested later, may be explained in another way. It has been pointed out that an inclusion droplet in the liquid steel may grow at the expense of an adjacent one, which implies diffusion of soluble inclusion-forming elements in the liquid steel.15 Further, it has been pointed out that, on cooling in ladle or mold, the metal-silicate equilibrium is displaced in the direction of separation of silicate. Thus inclusions may grow in size and amount.2,3,8,12,13,17,19,20 The exposure of the liquid steel to the oxygen of the air during tapping and pouring, and the consequent reaction, has been mentioned as a source of the formation of inclusions19,20 but this possibility has not received particular attention. Further, the admixture of furnace slag during tapping' or of refractory material from various sources1,20 has been considered. The inclusions due to the latter may be recognized, however, through their resistance to hydrofluoric acid, imparted by the alumina content. In this paper, as in so many discussions of an historical nature, there is little chance for original material and much has had to be rewritten from older papers, documents, accounts, reports, and the like, some of which are of doubtful authorship or contain conflicting statistics. Fully aware of these pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but they cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates. The Encyclopedia Britannica was frequently consulted. The authors wish to acknowledge assistance from Mackintosh-Hemp-hill Co. (formerly the Fort Pitt Works) and also from officials of the Watertown Arsenal who loaned valuable books and gave much necessary information. They are particularly indebted to Colonel Dickson of that institution. The data on modern guns were furnished by Mr. F. Brauer of the Watertown Arsenal; Mr. H. S. Iron ore in considerable quantities was known to exist within the territory of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; and as early as 1629 some steps appear to have been taken toward the manufacture of iron by the Court of Assistants in London, under whose patronage the colony was founded. During the next ten years, deposits of bog ore were found in numerous ponds in the Plymouth Colony; and, in 1652, iron manufacture was begun at Raynham. My first paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896— 30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening," hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, dis-cusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allo-tropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it ha been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0. WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. The idea of bonding two dissimilar ferrous metals, and making use of both, is an old one. Tips have been brazed onto tool shanks for many years. The bonding of larger pieces to form whole bars and sheets has also been accomplished, but has received little attention in the technical literature, although a number of patents have been issued covering various methods for its accomplishment. There are three main motives behind the manufacture of composite steels. One is that the physical properties of one steel may supplement those of another; a useful, but at the same time, hard, brittle steel may be backed by a soft ductile one, or a stainless steel may be backed by a steel possessing greater strength. Another motive is direct lowering of cost; an expensive steel may be backed by a less expensive one, bringing down the cost of the piece as a whole. The third motive is an indirect lowering of cost, as when a useful steel is backed by a steel that is easier to machine, so that machining cost on a finished product is lowered considerably. Often more than one of these motives lead to a decision to use a composite steel. Previous Methods There are two methods in use that result in tolerably good bonds between ferrous metals: (1) the casting method, and (2) what we shall call the "heat-pressure" method. This "heat-pressure" method covers processes in which the bond is made between two prepared surfaces by heating them and then applying pressure. Usually sufficient pressure must be used to produce appreciable spread and elongation, or else we arc merely brazing and not truly welding. Molybdenum and tungsten have desirable corrosion and temperature resistant properties, but the metals in bulk are expensive and their fabrication is difficult. Such considerations led to a search for a method of plating them upon base metals. This search was successful and led furthermore to a number of developments which could not have been foreseen. Neither pure tungsten nor pure molybdenum has been electroplated successfully, although the literature of electroplating is liberally sprinkled with the description of unsuccessful attempts. The process of plating these metals by thermal reduction of their halides has achieved onlv limited usefulness because of technical limitations and because of limited range of product quality. Plating by thermal decomposition of the carbonyls does not suffer from limitations of the same sort and the properties of the plate are readily controllable. This paper describes the plating of molybdenum and tungsten, and of compounds and alloys of these metals, by pyrolysis of their carbonyl vapors. Chromium also has been plated in this manner, but the experiments upon chromium have been less extensive and the results much less satisfactory. Probably the most important of the products which we have obtained are the alloys with carbon, and the carbides of the metals. Either molybdenum or tungsten can be deposited upon a base metal as a coherent and adherent coating. By adjusting the plating condition the carbon content of the coating can be made to have any value from substantially zero to about 35 atomic pct. The hardness is dependent primarily upon the amount of carbon in the plate and can be regulated over a very wide range, some coatings containing considerable carbon being harder than sapphire. In addition to products already known this method of plating has yielded new carbides of molybdenum and tungsten and alloys supersaturated with carbon. These new products are possible because, in the process of plating, carbonyl can be decomposed at temperatures as low as about 150°C, and thus in the presence of other substances reactions occur which could perhaps not be produced in any other way. In addition to carbides and alloys with carbon, sulphides and oxides of molybdenum and tungsten have been produced and studied. There are certain other advantages of the carbonyl method of plating. It is not required that the base have good electrical conductivity as in electrochemical processes, and the base need not have the temperature stability required in plating from a halide. oriented crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were rolled to reductions of 10 and 70 to 97 pct at room temperature. Similarly oriented crystals were deformed in tension. Dislocation substructures of the deformed crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of silicon on the formation of substructures. Pole figures were obtained to relate orientation changes to substructure. When rolled 10 pct, the iron crystals and the 3 pct Si-Fe crystals formed cells, 1 and 0.2 u in diameter, respecliuely. Cells were absent in the higher-silicon crystals. Extended dislocations and possible stacking faults were observed in the 6.25 pct Si-Fe crystal rolled 10 pct and annealed at 650°C. The stacking-fault energy was estimated to be 20 ergs per sq cm. Rolling to 70 pct resulted in the formation of sub-bands (0.9 µ wide) ill the iron crystals and transition bands (containing 0.2-µ-wide subbands) in the 3 pct Si crystals. No subbands formed in the 5 pct Si-Fe crystal until it was ankzealed. SliP occurred on (112) planes ill tension. The slip traces on the 3 pct Si crystal were wary while those on the 5 pct Si crystal wvere straight. The strain-hardening coefficient for the 5 pct Si crystal was nearly zero. Cells did not form, at least at elongations up to 10 pet. The results suggest that cross slip of iron is restricted by additions of silicon beyond about 3 pct possibly by formation of immobile extended dislocations. IN a previous paper' the authors described the substructures developed in (100)[001]-oriented crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe which were rolled to reductions of 10 to 90 pct at room temperature. At low reductions (10 to 20 pct) cells, approximately 0.2 to 0.3 ja in diameter, were formed. The cell walls consisted mainly of edge dislocations. With increasing reduction (up to 50 pct) the cells were seen to elongate in the rolling direction. In certain regions of the crystal there were significant reorientations which were characterized as rotations about an axis normal to the (100) or rolling plane. These regions were called "transition bands". The regions in which there were no reorientations were called ('deformation bands". At reductions of 60 to 70 pct the elongated cells in the transition bands became sub-bands separated by low-angle tilt boundaries with angles of disorientation of about 2 deg. The elongated cell structure in the deformation band was replaced by a general distribution of dislocations. It was noted that the width of the subbands in the transition bands remained 0.2 to 0.3 µ; i .e., the width of the subbands was the same as the initial cell diameter for reductions up to at least 70 pct. From this, and from considerations of the mechanism of formation of the transition bands,' it was concluded that the subbands evolved directly from the initial cells. In order to check this conclusion, it was decided to examine the relationship between initial cell diameter and width of subbands produced by large rolling reductions. Cell size is known to be dependent upon the temperature of deformation.2,3 However, preliminary experiments with 3 pct Si-Fe crystals indicated that the change in cell size with increasing temperature of deform,ation was not sufficient for the present purpose. On the other hand, cell diameters generally reported for iron deformed at room temperature2'3 range from 1 to 2 p, a factor of 3 to 10 larger than the cells in 3 pct Si-Fe rolled to 10 pct reduction,' indicating the possibility of a marked dependence of substructure (at least in terms of cell size) on the amount of silicon in iron. Thus, the investigation was enlarged to include the study of the effects of varying silicon content on substructure in lightly rolled as well as in heavily rolled crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si. The crystals used in this study all had the same orientation, (100)[001], with respect to rolling plane and rolling direction. These were rolled to reductions of from 10 to 97 pct and the substructures determined by electron transmission microscopy in both the rolled state and after annealing. In addition, stress-strain curves were obtained from (100)[001]-oriented crystals of iron and 3 and 5 pct Si-Fe to determine the effect of silicon on tensile properties. The dislocation substructure of the tensile specimens was also determined for Samples pulled to 2 and 10 pct elongation at room temperature for comparison with the substructures produced by rolling. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystals with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were prepared by annealing 0.012-in.-thick sheets of high-purity Si-Fe in purified argon at 1200°C to effect growth

The placer gold occurrences at Sart Çayl, Manisa, Turkey, the legendary River Pactolus of King Croessus, were evaluated in this study to determine if this deposit contains sufficient recoverable value to justify development and exploitation. The gold occurs both in the upper Neogene conglomerates and the alluvium derived from these conglomerates. The total reserve in the whole region is estimated to be 500 million cubic metres. Samples were taken of the upper conglomerate and in the alluvium in an attempt to determine the amount and the physical nature of the gold. The gold in samples was recovered by screening out barren oversize followed by washing the sand and gravel through riffled sluices. The resulting sluice concentrate was later panned and amalgamated at site. Laboratory cyanidation testing of some samples for control purposes was also done. The average calculated free gold was found to be about 90-100mg/m3 and the size of gold flakes found was quite small. The field as well as laboratory testing of the samples of Sart Çay1 indicated that the potential reserves in this region could only be developed as a sand and gravel operation and the gold could be recovered together with the heavy minerals as a byproduct.

Concentration of fine quartz particles at the iso-octane/water interface has been investigated under different conditions of pH and dodecylamine concentration. The results obtained from the related studies on the effect of amine concentration and pH on the interfacial tension, adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and concentration of the various amine species in the system are presented. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. It is well-known that very fine mineral particles are difficult to float in conventional flotation machines. Flotation rate studies have revealed that the rate of flotation of fine mineral particles is much smaller than that of coarser size fractions. The theories accounting for this behavior have been discussed by Arbiter and Harris1 and also Meloy.2 Theoretically, a hydrophobic fine particle might never make contact with a bubble because of the presence of an energy barrier in the vicinity of the air/water interface.' This energy barrier will have electrostatic, hydrodynamic, and Van der Waals force components. It was thought that by using an oil phase instead of air the energy barrier would be decreased so that fine particles could be concentrated at the oil/water interface more readily than at the air/water interface. The technique used involves dispersing the fine particles in water, containing the appropriate chemical reagents, and injecting a fine dispersion of iso-octane oil droplets into the pulp. After vigorous conditioning, the pulp is passed into a separating column where the oil droplets coated with a layer of mineral particles rise to the surface to form a separate layer. Air is introduced into the base of the separating column to ensure that heavy agglomerates of oil and particles report with the organic layer. This technique has been described previously4 and adopted by Lai and Fuerstenau5 who studied the alumina-dodecyl sulfonate system. The interfacial phenomena in the system composed of hematite, water, and iso-octane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate have been studied and the results reported" earlier. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the interfacial phenomena in the quartz/water/iso-octane system in the presence of dodecylamine. The technique used in measuring the interfacial tension, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and adsorption density were similar to those described previously? Materials Selected pieces of a high purity natural quartz, from the Isle of Man, were crushed in a laboratory jaw crusher and pulverizer. The — 52+72 mesh size fraction was retained and leached with successive washes of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron impurities. When no iron was detected in the solution by ammonium thiocyanate, the quartz was washed thoroughly with distilled water until the conductivity of the wash water assumed that of the distilled water. Samples of 25 g of the —52+72 mesh quartz were ground for 5.25 min in an agate vibratory mill. The ground product was 100% —44 m and 57% —10 am, as determined by the Andreasen pipette. The specific surface area of the sample used for the adsorption and flotation tests was 0.94 sq m g-l. This corresponds to a mean particle diameter of 2.4 am. The —44 am quartz sample was stored under vacuum in the presence of silica gel crystals. For the contact angle determination between the three phases, quartz, iso-octane, and water, a piece of the natural quartz was ground into a block about 15 mm long, 15 mm wide, and 5 mm thick. One surface of the block was then polished by successively finer grades of silicon carbide "paper." The final polishing was conducted with alumina on a "hyprocel" paper. The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size.
