O estudo baseia-se na observação direta e objetiva dos métodos utilizados por várias empresas no Brasil e no exterior. Nossa conclusão é que a abordagem proposta resulta em significante redução de custos.

A crescente necessidade por resultados de análises laboratoriais dentro das indústrias são cada vez mais exigentes em termos de tempo de resposta e precisão. Aliado a isso, a elevação do volume de minério de ferro exportado e o aumento da variabilidade desses produtos requerem processos cada vez mais rigorosos e tomados de decisões mais rápidas. Nesse contexto, os analisadores on-line têm um papel fundamental, pois atendem tais exigências, além de preservarem a segurança operacional. Este trabalho tem por objetivo mostrar o desenvolvimento da implantação de analisadores de umidade on line na descarga dos vagões da Vale no Terminal Ponta da Madeira. A metodologia utilizada na medição de umidade dos analisadores usa o princípio de transmissão de micro-ondas, que é a melhor tecnologia disponível no mercado para este fim. Dentre as etapas de implantação, que abrange desde a aquisição dos equipamentos até a avaliação dos controles e ajustes operacionais, é mostrado o período de cada etapa, os problemas encontrados e as soluções adotadas. Em suma, atualmente há medição de umidade on line na descarga deste site e está em fase de implantação a análise durante o carregamento do embarque para controle de processo.

The general objective of this research is to present the main exploratory and beneficiation aspects of salt production. Among the aspects of salt is the properties of salt, history and mining, besides the aspects of environment and work safety. However, this research resulted in preliminary data, but it would be interesting to be more thorough so that the extraction of salt in the academic world is disclosed

Production of structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa produced as hot rolled coil has become increasingly popular due to cost considerations when compared to quench and temper equivalent product. This grade when produced as hot rolled coil requires the use of microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms. This is typically a combination of niobium and titanium microalloys. While the metallurgical concept of structural steel precipitation strengthening mechanisms has been well researched and published, actual implementation into the production process can be very challenging. In addition to achieving a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa, in many applications additional mechanical property attributes of formability as measured by hole expansion testing along with low temperature toughness properties are now required. Achieving a balance of all the mechanical properties in a stable and repeatable performance in production using microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms further increases the challenges. This paper will discuss the metallurgical/process strategies required to successfully produce 700 Mpa minimum yield strength hot rolled structural steel coil. In addition, the role and goals of both niobium and titanium in this product design will be presented.

Boron steel is used in the industry due to its great wear and impact resistance. During the hot rolling production of 15B29 steel flat bars it is a recurrent problem that the bars will present warping while on the cooling bed. Control this phenomenon is an opportunity to have better productivity, preventing metallic losses. Through the observation of the macro and microstructure samples produced with different reheating temperatures and cooling rates, it was found the presence of residual stresses and cracks on warped bars macrostructure. The residual stresses appearance suggest that the material cooling is too fast. Billets temperature on the reheating furnace of 1230°C reduced to 1100°C and the production pace slowed down. Bars temperature when arriving the cooling bed was reduced from higher than 670°C to 625°C. The results obtained made it possible to produce the material with better quality, reducing the warping effect at the cooling bed. The major influence on the materials warping was identified as the cooling rate at the cooling bed and the reheating furnace temperature was adjusted to provide a homogeneous temperature along the bars.

Desclassificações de corridas por elementos fora da faixa de especificação do tipo do aço que está sendo produzido impactam negativamente nos indicadores da empresa. É esforço contínuo os projetos de melhoria e ações implantadas para a redução dessas desclassificações. Quando uma corrida é desclassificada, há um custo para refazer a corrida perdida, ocorre um processo de reclassificação que fica em estoque aguardando aplicação, perde-se tempo e pontualidade na produção entre outros impactos. Portanto identificar a causa raiz do problema e atuar em ações efetivas e bem implantadas são as chaves para a resolução do problema e melhoramento do processo. O fósforo é um elemento que deve ser controlado pois é item de norma para atendimento às especificações pois impactam na fragilização do material. Este trabalho mostra a análise realizada na busca da causa raiz das ocorrências das desclassificações de fósforo.

É comum um sistema de resfriamento de água por meio de torres de resfriamento perder performance ao longo de sua vida útil e começar a se tornar um limitante de capacidade para o processo. Nestes casos, o mesmo pode sofrer manutenção e até retomar sua capacidade original. Entretanto, ocasionalmente esta manutenção se torna inviável, pelo impacto gerado na disponibilidade das operações ligadas a este sistema. Este foi o caso deste projeto, onde a solução adotada foi a adição de uma célula às duas existentes na torre de refrigeração, atingindo uma performance melhor que a nominal no sistema como um todo.

The aim of this work was to study the influence of temperature on the grain refining process from severe plastic deformations through the simulation of Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) by torsion tests. The assays were performed to simulate the ARB at three different temperatures of 550 ° C, 625 ° C and 700 ° C with 5 torsion cycles with equivalent strain of 0.8 per cycle at a rate of 0.1−1 , totalizing an accumulated deformation of 4.0. Grain refining was obtained with an average size of 2μm, 5μm and 6μm for the temperatures of 550 ° C, 625 ° C and 700 ° C respectively. There was a rise in Vickers hardness by 68%, from 119HV in the annealed sample to 175HV in the deformed sample at 550 ° C. In the deformations at 625 ° C and 700 ° C the value of 130HV E and 150HV respectively was obtained. Based on the obtained results, it can be stated that the severe plastic deformations in microliged steel, carried out at temperatures lower than the end of the austenite-ferrite transformation, produce refined grains of the order of 2μm and, consequently, increase the mechanical strength of the material.

Existem vários tipos de compressores centrífugos de gás, mas em todos o sistema de controle de capacidade influencia diretamente a performance do compressor e também a capacidade máxima de compressão do mesmo. O Controle de Capacidade do Compressor por ser realizado a partir de válvulas tanto na sução bem como na descarga em forma de vent ou mesmo uma válvula em forma de recirculação. Todos os sistemas operam como forma de controle de capacidade mas o mais eficiente é por meio de controle por uma válvula na sucção do compressor, pois tanto a recirculação como um vent na descarga não reduzem o consumo de energia elétrica de forma eficiente pela vazão entregue. Neste trabalho trataremos particularmente de um controle de capacidade por meio de válvulas de sucção em compressores de nitrogênio centrífugos procurando uma forma mais eficiente de compressão e também elevar a capacidade de compressão.

There is a strong need in North America and other major steel producing markets where major capital investment in new equipment has been minimal over the past several years to make improvements to existing casting machines. In many cases, very cost effective improvements can be made to existing equipment in order to maximize the efficiency and production of an older designed continuous caster, a classic caster. SMS Group and its predecessor companies have been maintaining continuous casting molds for over forty years. This experience has allowed SMS Group to intimately understand the advantages and disadvantages of each design. The most vital component of the continuous caster is the mold copper design, as it has the most influence over the ability to cast a quality product. A GAL tem uma constante preocupação em desempenhar as atividades de embarque e faturamento de forma eficiente e ao mesmo tempo receber a produção cada vez melhor. Pensando nisso, a equipe buscou parâmetros que pudessem medir a eficiência do Entreposto13 e propor melhorias, visando eliminar as constantes paradas de equipamentos por falta de área de armazenagem no Entreposto. O desejo era reduzir a quantidade de bobinas removidas no momento do carregamento, pois quando se reduz esse o manuseio interno, reduz-se o tempo do embarque e consequentemente agiliza o recebimento de bobinas no entreposto. Várias outras melhorias de infraestruturas e gestão de pessoas e equipamentos foram necessárias para que o objetivo final fosse alcançado. Objetivo esse que se resume em reduzir paradas dos equipamentos de Preparação de Bobinas à Quente para aumentar a velocidade de embarque.

Roll grade evolution in plate mill applications is traditionally following the development in hot strip mills. New grades normally find their way into service only after being successfully implemented in hot strip production. The majority of the plate mills worldwide are using work roll grades that have been invented before the 1980’s. But today the demands in the mills are pushed by sophisticated product mixes and longer rolling campaigns. The result of this development is a higher wear rate on the work rolls and as a consequence roll hardness is increased and advanced roll materials are used. The backup rolls are also affected by this. The wear rate is higher and the mechanical impact in terms of contact pressure and work hardening is increasing. This paper outlines the results of the roll grade development at Gontermann-Peipers and introduces new materials for work and backup rolls for plate mills.

Clays with high content of smectite are denominated bentonites, and are widely used in industry as, for example, agents for bleaching of vegetable oils, animals and minerals. For this use, the smectite clays are treated with inorganic acid of high concentration at temperatures under boiling point, which provide the bentonite´s bleaching power. In the present study, a sample of smectite from Cubati, Paraiba, Brazil, was submitted to treatment under moderate conditions (90°C, reaction times of 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24hours in close reactor, concentration of the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid 1.5 M, acid solution/clay ratio of 1g/10mL), aiming to reduce impurities, responsible for the color of the clay, without causing significant changes in their structure. Thus, clay can be used in the cosmetics industry and other products with high added value. The treated clay was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), stereomicroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed a bleaching in samples with time of 12h to 18h. With the DRX was possible to monitor the peak intensity of the clay structure and the sample with 12 hours of treatment was not significantly altered its crystalline structure, maintaining the peak clay at d001. The most pronounced changes in the bleaching occurred within the first 12 hours of acid treatment.

O uso de ferramentas de simulação numérica para análise estrutural vem se expandindo nos últimos anos, sobretudo utilizando o método dos elementos finitos. Nesse trabalho são apresentados dois exemplos de otimização de projetos envolvendo componentes de mecanismos de válvula gaveta, realizados pela Magnesita Refratários S.A. Partindo da geometria inicial até o produto final, é analisado como o campo de tensões é adequado a valores admissíveis, conforme modificações de projeto são realizadas. Por fim, é demonstrada a importância desse tipo de estudo para alcançar maior confiabilidade e segurança em projetos mecânicos.

The present study focuses in the simulation of pattern formation by ion beam sputtering on a material surface. This process is responsible for the appearance of unexpectedly organized patterns, such as ripples, nanodots and hexagonal arrays of nanoholes. A numerical analysis of preexisting patterns is proposed to investigate surface dynamics, based on a model derived from a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky anisotropic equation, in a two dimensional surface with periodic boundary conditions. While deterministic, its highly nonlinear character gives a rich range of results, making it possible to describe accurately different patterns. A finite-difference semi-implicit splitting scheme is employed on the discretization of the governing equation. Simulations were conducted with realistic coefficients related to physical parameters (anisotropies, beam orientation, diffusion). The study dealt with a random and a monomode 1D structure initial condition in order to understand how the shape and wavelength of the initial pattern evolve with time. Ripples and hexagonal patterns were observed in the results, being physically consistent with the phenomenon. Moreover, the Method of Manufactured Solution has been used as verification of the developed numerical scheme.

The Steel Plant Model (SPM) is an advanced logistic simulation model for steel plants. With the SPM, bottlenecks can be solved and logistics can be optimized. Both existing plants and greenfield designs can be simulated. All movements and actions simulated, from hot metal to cast products. Not only all major equipment and their relevant components (like a sublance) are simulated, but also ladles, scrap boxes, transfer cars and cranes. The whole plant is simulated in 3D and actual distances and speeds determine transport times. The SPM includes process time deviations and equipment downtimes for maintenance or unexpected breakdowns. This ensures more realistic and reliable results. Logistic optimization is based on comparison of different scenarios. For a new scenario, equipment and practices, etc. can easily be modified, added or removed. At the same time the SPM produces all relevant data for every new scenario, which can be presented conveniently. This makes the SPM the ultimate tool to find bottlenecks or optimize plant logistics. The SPM is validated for several plants world-wide, with different characteristics and layouts. The SPM not only realistically simulates existing plants with all utilizations, crane movements and waiting times, but also to accurately predicts the influence of plant modifications or unexpected events like breakdowns. Given the flexibility of the SPM, any (new) steel plant can be simulated quickly when a layout and the requested data are provided.

Emulsions are frequently used for the cooling and lubrication of working rolls during the cold rolling. The fact that the lubrication and cooling are not separable makes the optimization of both functionalities difficult. The higher emulsion temperature decreases the cooling efficiency compared to cold water. Heat transfer and fluid flow laboratory (Czech Republic), CRM (Belgium), Tata steel (Netherlands) and Henkel (Germany) cooperated on the increasing of a cooling efficiency during cold rolling. Part of this research was focused on an influence of the emulsion composition on a cooling intensity. The cooling efficiency was laboratory investigated. The stainless steel sample with thermocouple was heated and then it was cooled by a nozzle. Tests were performed with various emulsions and pure water. The heat transfer coefficient was computed from measured temperatures. The cooling intensity (heat transfer coefficient) of all tested emulsions was similar but an increase of the cooling intensity was found with water. Further various emulsions concentrations were tested. Results showed decreasing cooling intensity with increasing oil concentration. Adding additives therefore is thought to cause a noticeable decrease of the cooling intensity.

In the past the research and development of new materials for hot mill rolls was mostly done by trials. Such trials are expensive and difficult to transform from small size to the big size of a solid roll. Computation is the cheaper way to get ideas processed and can be varied in different directions. The main part before simulation is the generation of the needed basic data of the specific materials. Some data is already well known and can be bought from databases; others have to be done specifically for our materials. The evaluation of such results has to be done still with solid trials, but the number of trials can be reduced. The advanced techniques of finite element calculation offer a wide range of possibilities to get answers about alloys, solidification, casting parameters and their influence. The possibility to calculate a heat treatment cycle and to get an answer about the internal stress modification during the cycle is a great help to understand the principle of transformation. Examples of different calculations in various fields will be given. The close cooperation with universities and other research institutes as well as the in-house possibilities will be presented.

Nowadays the biodiesel use is obligate in Brazil, in order to reduce the emissions of fuel burn. However, it is important to analyze which percentage of biodiesel is necessary to keep or improve the lubricant action of fuel for diesel engine, as well which kind of biodiesel give better performance. Therefore, this work aims to analyze the parameters that keep the lubricant action of biofuels, by using the Box-Behnken design type to optimize them. In this design was evaluated the input parameters: the type of the biodiesel (soybean, sunflower and palm), the concentration (5%, 20% and 100%) and the temperature of contact (25°C, 40°C and 60°C). The analyzed output parameters were the percentage of film formation, coefficient of friction, wear scar diameter (WSD) of ball, these output parameters were obtained by HFRR tribometer and they were analyzed applying response surface methodology. With this methodology was possible to determine the simultaneous influence and the interactions between two or more independent variables investigated. The response surfaces generated for the coefficients of friction, WSD, film formation showed a higher lubricant action for higher levels of concentration of biodiesel. An increase in lubricant action was found to high and intermediate temperature.

The future lubricants must be more environmentally adapted, with a higher level of performance lower total life cycle, cost than currently used lubricants. Environmental friendly, the biodegradable alternatives are available for a large variety of mineral oil based lubricants. Vegetable oils are the major source of these base fluids, although they have lower thermal and oxidation stability and even worse low-temperature behavior than mineral oil. These physical and chemical properties can be improved by chemical modification. The aim of this study was to evaluate physicochemical properties and film formation from modified vegetable oils. The vegetable oil was chemically modified by epoxidation reaction with acetic and formic acid using sunflower oils. Viscosity, iodine value, density, acidity value and thermal stability were determined for epoxidized oils. The film formation was analyzed using a HFRR tribometer. The results showed that epoxidized vegetable oils had excellent properties to be used as lubricant, and their tribological performance is higher than mineral oil.
