Scope We have conducted our audit in accordance with statements of South African Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: ?examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, ?assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, and ?evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. WalSH, Chipman, King, and rant' have measured the water content (as hydrogen) of actual steel-making slags. An average water content of 290 ppm was found for basic open-hearth tapping slags and 114 ppm for acid open-hearth slags. Upon equilibration of these slags at 1550°C with a 25 pct H20-75 pct Nz atmosphere, the water content increased to about 410 and 300 ppm for the basic and acid slags, respectively. Walsh et al. concluded that an acid slag was thus relatively far removed from equilibrium, and that basic slags showed a closer approach to equilibrium, with the water vapor in the furnace atmosphere. Herasymenko2 contended that these conclusions were unjustified, as the oxygen pressure used in the equilibration experiments, ;bout 5 x X atm, was quite different from that found in the furnace. Consequently, during the experiments the slag composition would have changed due to oxidation of ferrous iron. As an extension of Walsh's work and to attempt to clarify this matter, the solubility of water in a basic open-hearth slag was measured as a function of oxygen pressure. Similar measurements were also made on synthetic silicates in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiO, system. The experimental technique has been described previously by Walsh et a1.l and Uys and King.3 Samples of the basic open-hearth finishing slag, contained in 10-cc platinum crucibles, were equilibrated at 1550°C with atmospheres of different oxygen pressure but constant water-vapor pressure, Ph~o = 0.192 atm. Calculations, as well as measurements, indicate that this figure approximates the water pressure of the combustion gases in a steam-atomized, oil-fired open hearth. Oxygen pressures in the open hearth can vary from 10"2 atm in the combustion gases to between l0-' and 10" atm in the steel bath. The former figure depends on the combustion practice and the latter on the carbon content and temperature of the bath. The oxygen pressure of the slag should lie somewhere between these extremes and is expected to be closer to that of the steel bath than that of the combustion gases. Oxygen pressures were therefore varied between 10" and 6 x l0 atm. At the lowest pressure the slag "puffed up" when quenched (indicating possible loss of water) so experiments were not conducted at lower oxygen pressures. The results are shown in Fig. 1, which includes the water content of the slag "as sampled". The results show that the water content of the slag increased appreciably on equilibration with water vapor at 0.192 atm pressure and that the water solubility apparently decreases with increased oxygen pressure. The solubilities found are comparable to those of the Li20-Ca0-Si02 system.3 Work with synthetic slags in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiOz system was performed at 1500" C, with Ph20 = 0.192 atrn and for oxygen pressures varying between 10"2 and 10-lo atm. Samples for chemical analysis were prepared as described by Larson.4 The results are shown in Fig. 2. Some low-silica melts tested at low oxygen pressures "puffed up" when quenched and analyzed less than 100 ppm water; these results are not included in Fig. 2. The melts containing 40 mol pct silica also showed a tendency to "puff up" during the quench, when they were tested at the lowest oxygen pressure. These results indicate that, at constant silica content, the solubility of water decreases somewhat with increased oxygen pressure. The effect is, however, small considering the wide range of oxygen pressures studied. Also, at constant oxygen pressure (above about lom5 atm) the solubility increases

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Self-directed work team concept is the product of relentless performance pressure on American industries during the late eighties and early nineties from other world industrial leaders like Japan. The concept proved to be a successful vehicle by which the Americans could increase their production and improve their safety statistics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the concept as a means to improve the overall performance on South African goldmines. he study is directed by a historical research section, answering questions like: ?Why do we need to change? ?What is a Self-directed work team? ?What are the principle advantages of the concept? ?What are the essential requirements for the concept to succeed? The study also includes an empirical research section that focuses on the current Self-directed work team situation in the South African gold mining industry. The empirical research section is limited to three case studies within Anglogold due to a study period of only six weeks. The mines chosen for the case studies have been labelled Mine 1, Mine 2 and Mine 3. The latter being the base mine allowing for a more in depth study. This includes a perception analysis towards Self-directed work teams within the mine. The study proves the truth of the Latin proverb ?Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis? meaning ?The times are changing, and we are changing with them?. The chief change catalysts identified are a dwindling gold price and a projected labour crisis. From the study it is evident that the Self-directed work team concept disposes of the critical parameters required for a dramatic improvement in performance. The study also indicates that for the concept to succeed, certain factors like top-level commitment and management-employee trust have to be in place. Sadly, the concluding part of the study proves that very few of the identified critical success parameters are present in the South African gold mining industry. This can serve to explain why the industry only has success with the concept when monetary gain is the chief motivator. The study only focuses on the reasons why the concept is not performing to its full potential and does not wander into explaining the reasons for the current unsupportive milieu in the industry. Self-directed work teams could well rescue the South Africangold mining industry but currently we are driving a square pin into a round hole! Laboratory experiments simulating rock drilling were conducted on a number of commercial grades of tungsten carbide in order to determine their wear rates when they are used as inserts in percussive rock drill bits. The test rock was Barre granite and tests were made at conditions similar to those of the carbide buttons near the periphery of a large, down-hole, button bit. In addition, some wear rate measurements were made at a low blow energy. Wear rates of these carbide buttons were an extremely sensitive function of their cobalt contents and hardnesses and were proportional to e-°.57Hup to a hardness of about 91 RA. The point of minimum wear rate, which occurs at about 92 RA, corresponds to the point of maximum compressive strength. Modern percussive rock drill bits have inserts of cemented tungsten carbide on their wear faces. These inserts have drastically reduced bit wear in comparison to that of earlier all steel bits. The most common cemented carbide grade used in percussive rock drill bits contains about ten weight percent cobalt, although grades containing more or less cobalt are also used. Contrary to the case with carbide in metal-cutting tools, alloying materials are rarely used in mining grades. There are a number of designs of rock bits in current use. The most common form is an X bit which has four chisel-form radial wings. The button bit is another important design and one which has been recently developed. This design uses a flat steel face studded with relatively small hemispherically tipped carbide buttons. These types are illustrated in Fig. 1. Studies have been made of the sliding wear of cemented tungsten carbide on rock 1-4 and multiple-impact fracture', 5-6, b~t there has been comparatively little published on the percussive wear of this material although the wear of the impact face is the most important. There is some available data on the rate of dulling of rock bit inserts in actual drilling 7 but no laboratory studies. Sliding wear studies are useful for understanding the wear of coal and mineral cutting tools and gauge wear of percussive drill bits. but the

Static loading teets of five nodular piles and four non-nodular piles were performed in Tianjin soft clayey soil in which measurements of axial force and movements were made. Distribution of shaft resistance and load-movment curves for pile head and pile toe are presented in this paper. The applicability of nodular piles to soft soil and their effectiveness are also discussed. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that nodular piles have an advantage over non-nodular piles mainly in contri­bution to shaft resistance. Dynamic testing was also conducted through R. P. T. for evaluating the service load of tested piles.

Mining up to depths of 5 000 m would be a world first and, accordingly, no previous experience in the determination of acceptable heat stress limits, criteria or indices is wholly applicable. However, some South African gold mines are already operating at depths beyond 3000 m and much of the knowledge gained in reaching and working at such depths will be helpful in making adequate provision for acceptable environmental control at the greater depths being contemplated. Accordingly, it is necessary to take cognisance of the industry?s experience in deep-level mining and of standards and regulations already established in South Africa and elsewhere in order to ensure acceptable working conditions and control standards, that compare favourably and defensibly with those in other mining industries. The local and international use of heat stress limits, criteria and indices were investigated as it was necessary to determine to what extent any other indices, limits or criteria would be applicable to South African deep mine conditions. In addition, it was necessary to establish whether there was a single heat stress index that could be used for South African ultra deep mining conditions. It was found that an appropriate combination of heat stress indices would be required in planning for and ultimately controlling thermal conditions in ultra-deep mining. The depths being contemplated and the concomitant potential heat hazard present too great a risk for reliance on a single environmental component of heat stress, such as wet-bulb temperature at present in common use locally. The study recommends that a heat stress index, preferably Air Cooling Power (ACP), be used to design an ultra deep mine?s ventilation system and that wet-bulb temperature be used to monitor and control the system once it is implemented.

The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross-section within each rock layer; i.e., the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties, and factor of safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e., the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8° depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

By authority of the Federal Coal-Mine Inspection Act of May 7, 1941, Public Law 49--77th Congress, H.R. 2082,2/ a Coal-Mine Inspection Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Mines. Funds totaling $729,000 for the operation of the division and for other incidental expenses were provided in an amendment to the Department of the Interior appropriation bill for the fiscal year 1942 (H.R. 4590). A small. percentage of these funds was made available on July 1, 1941, and a much greater proportion on October 1, 1941, to defray the expenses of the coal-mine inspection work and incidental activities for the remainder of the fiscal year 1942. The Coal-Mine Inspection Division is charged with administering the act and is required to compile, analyze, publish, and otherwise make available for public inspection the information obtained under it and to transmit such information to the Director of the Census. The act requires also that the information obtained be reported to Congress, with such findings and comments thereon and such recommendations for legislative action as may be deemed proper.

Toxic fumes generated during shot firing under actual mining conditions were measured. Eight shots with Gelodyn-2X and seven shots with Tovex-100 4VT were monitored. Average CO values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.20 ft3/lb and 0.09 ft3/lb, respectively. Average N0x values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.049 ft3/lb and 0.026 ft3/lb, respectively. The results obtained with these in-mine tests will be used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the development of a large chamber method of measuring fumes from shotfiring of explosives.

Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

I HAVE been greatly honored as your unanimous choice for President of this. Institute, with which I have been associated during my entire professional life. It is customary for your new President, on these occasions, to make some observation on matters of general interest from the engineer's standpoint. The profession of engineering in the United States comprises not alone scientific advisers on industry but, in great majority, is comprised of the men in administrative positions. In such positions, they stand midway between capital and labor. The character of your training and experience leads you to exact and quantitative thought. This basis of training in a great group of Americans furnished a wonderful' recruiting ground for service in these last years of tribulation. Many thousands of engineers were called into the army, the navy, and civilian service for the Government. Thousands of high offices were discharged by them with credit to the profession and the nation. We have in. this country, probably, one hundred thousand professional engineers. The events of the past few years have greatly stirred their interest in national problems.' This has taken practical. form in the maintenance of joint committees for discussion of these problems and support to a free advisory bureau in ,Washington. The engineers want nothing for themselves from Congress.. They want efficiency in government, and you contribute to the maintenance of this bureau out of sheer idealism. This organization for consideration of national problems has had many subjects before it, and I propose to touch on some of them this evening.

Shear-flow coupling tests are conducted using an original apparatus, and a shear-flow coupling model using Geographic Information System (GIS) is developed in order to evaluate shear-flow coupling properties of a rock joint. Shear-flow coupling tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of joint once decreases, and then rapidly increases at the shear displacement near the peak shear stress. The proposed model simulates the test results relatively well. However it indicates that it is difficult to apply the local ‘cubic law’ model in the initial shear stage, in which the change of selective flow path is remarkable. Scher-Fliess-Kopplungsversuche werden mit einem neuartigen Versuchsgerät durchgeführt und mithilfe von Geo-Informationssystemen (GIS) gedeutet, um so ein Modell für die Scher-Fliess-Kopplung in Gebirgstrennflächen zu entwickeln. Die Versuche zeigen, dass die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit zuerst abnimmt, dann aber schnell wieder zunimmt sobald die maximale Scherfestigkeit erreicht ist. Das vorgestellte Modell bildet die Testergebnisse relativ gut nach. Es zeigt auch, dass es schwierig ist, das lokale Cubic Law im Initialstadium der Scherbeanspruchung anzuwenden, in dem die Variationen selektiver Fliesswege gross ist. Les essaies hydro-mécaniques couplés en cisaillement sont réalisés grâce à un appareil éxperimental prototype et un modèle de couplage hydro-mécanique utilisant le S.I.G (systeme d'information géographique) développé dans le but d'évaluer les propriétés hydro-mécaniques des joint rocheux. Les résultats indiquent que la conductivité hydraulique des joints décroit puis augmente rapidement en se rapprochant du pic de cisaillement. Le modèle proposé simule relativement bien les résultats expérimentaux ; mais indique également qu’il est difficile d’appliquer localement la loi cubique au début du cisaillement où, les changements d’orientation dans le réseau d'écoulement sont considerables.

A mineral resource evaluation of the Coyote-Southeast RARE II area (No. 5033) was performed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1981 for the U.S. Forest Service RARE II program. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral resource inventory of the study area's mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized outcrops. The study area's boundaries encompass 51,700 acres on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada and are within Inyo National Forest southeast of the city of Bishop in east-central California. Cretaceous granite underlies most of the area; the remainder of the rocks are metasedimentary. At the contact of the two, tactites formed at many places where carbonate rocks were present; replacement processes produced local scheelite (calcium tungstate) occurrences.

The purpose of the study presented in this article is to establish a standard blast pattern to yield optimum blasting performance along with an attempt to reduce a difference between design and construction. A series of test blasts were carried out at two tunneling sites of Central Inland Highway crossing in Korea. Long-hole blasting was tested in rock mass whose RMR value is over 60.The blasting results were evaluated by measuring degree of fragmentation, advance rate,muckpile distribution, overbreak, etc. Based on the results of test blast, several patterns were proposed for a two-lane highway tunnel.

In spite of this, most people (except those unfortunate enough to live in seismicallyactive areas) have probably never felt this phenomenon, or if they have, only a very few times in their entire lifetime. However, when it does happen, nothing is more frightening than the sudden shaking of the earth beneath us - after all, we think of the ground we walk on as the unyielding, solid underpinning of our existence.

"INTRODUCTION Extraction of alumina from various materials, such as low-grade bauxite and clay, by means of a lime-soda sinter has been the subject of a number ofinvestigations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17). 5/ in recent years, Although many of the details of these investigations are lacking, it is believed that there is one difficultly that frequently develops under certain conditions, namely, that of thickening or gelation of the slurry formed during extraction of the sinter. If gelation occurs even to a slight extent* Serious mechanical difficulties result, very low liquor recoveries are obtained, and the extraction step becomes virlually inoperable. Under 'favorable conditions, a solid gel is formed which can only be removed from the equipment with great difficulty. At the Eastern Experiment. Station of the Bureau of Mines in College Park, Md., a study of lime-soda processes was begun in November 1941. This work has included studies on low-grade bauxites, kaolin clay, and nodular diasporic clay. Gelation was most serous with kaolin clay and least with diasporic clay. As a part of the Bureau's investigation, a study was made of the effect of the pertinent variables on gelation. The results permit the selection of various sets of conditions at which gelation will not occur. These data are essential to the final selection of optimum conditions for the over-all process."

In situ stresses are important input data for the design of safe, stable stope layouts and extraction sequences. However, it is commonly assumed that normal and shear stress gradients in a stress field are negligible and, consequently, that stresses are uniform throughout the region of analysis. To evaluate these assumptions and to provide input data for an analysis of a shaft pillar mining plan, in situ stresses were measured at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, using overcoring on hollow inclusion cells and borehole deformation gauges. These measurements were used with conventional least squares, best fit data reduction schemes. The results showed that normal stresses within the shaft pillar were less than, but comparable to, those estimated from finite-element modeling. Shear stresses were an order of magnitude less than normal stresses and varied considerably from site to site. Possible causes of this variability include effects of scale, elastic moduli, anisotropy, and axial strain. Because of the variability, it is not possible to determine the magnitude of horizontal stress gradients.
