The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. Blasting safety is a subject that cannot be overemphasized. Two years ago, a study was published describing g a series of fatal blasting accidents which took the lives of ten metal and nonmetal miners during the period of May 1973 to August 1974.1 Each accident was described, and the direct causes were delineated. In each instance, specific MESA safety regulations were violated. Four of the victims were killed by drilling into explosives; two were killed by lingering too long in the vicinity of fuse rounds; two fatalities resulted from improper guarding of shots; one blaster did not retreat far enough to avoid the blast concussion; and another used an improper tester for checking an electric blasting cap. All of these fatalities could have been avoided by adhering to the MESA blasting regulations contained in 30 CFR Part 55 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Open-Pit Mines), Part 56 (Health and Safety Standards-Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Operations), and Part 57 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Underground Mines).

ME?s Arizona Conference was held at the Hilton El Conquistador resort in Tucson on Dec. 2 and 3, 2007. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The 2007 meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecturer and more than 25 technical papers that were presented in seven sessions. The sessions included environmental, geology, safety, metallurgy, mining, new projects and a special session on Mexico. Topics covered included mine closure, sustainable mining, exploration methods, health and safety issues, mining equipment and drilling. Much of the discussion at the conference concerned major new developments in the region?s copper mining industry. For example, Freeport-McMoRan?s new Safford Mine and BHP Billiton?s Pinto Valley restart were the topics of technical presentations. There was also much discussion among the attendees on the current and future price of copper, community relations, education issues and recruitment concerns. At the time of the conference, the price of copper hovered around $3.30/lb, up considerably from the 61 cents/lb in late 2001, when the industry was being challenged by world market conditions and a weakened domestic economy. Since then, strong demand from China helped push copper prices to record levels that at one time reached as high as $4/lb. The general consensus among the attendees is that the current price of around $3.30/lb will continue through 2008. Most attendees also expect increased corporate investments in the industry to continue. Copper mining in Arizona has been a major industry since the 1800s. In 2007, Arizona was the leading copper-producing state in the United States and produced more than $5 billion worth of copper. The copper mining industry in Arizona also produces byproduct gold, silver and molybdenum. Arizona is the second largest molybdenum producer in the United States.

The US economy and the demand for nonfuel minerals grew at lower rates in 1995 than in 1994. Demand for major metals, such as aluminum, copper and steel, was mixed but relatively stable. The building industry, including highway construction, helped to support modest overall growth in demand for industrial minerals. The value of processed materials of nonfuel mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10%compared with 1994 (Fig. 1). The estimated value of US raw nonfuel minerals production during 1995 was $38billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of US minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35years.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. Longwall mining originated in the early 18th century in the county of Shropshire in England, where it was known as the longway method. Its name implies the extraction of the seam over a long continuous length or wall of exposed coal. Until the late 19608 and early 1970s the use of the longwall system with a few exceptions was confined to the United Kingdom and Europe. It was not until the early 19708 that the highly productive longwall faces we now know, were developed and the application of the longwall system extended to Australia, South Africa, United states of America and other parts of the world. The modern longwall face has three major components, namely: +         the machine to break and load the coal +         the face conveyor; +         and a system of roof support.   This paper reviews the development of longwall mining technology. The parameters directly influencing the production 'of a modern longwall face are considered, as are the possible constraints to the further development of the longwall system.

Most citizens take it for granted, but minerals produced in the mines of the western United States, including Colorado, are crucial to nation’s standard of living and quality of life, said Colorado’s Gov. Bill Owens in his welcoming remarks at the 106th National Western Mining Conference. The conference, which was organized by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA), was held Feb. 4-6, 2004, in Denver. Attendance was425, up substantially from last year’s meeting. The meeting included the CMA annual membership meeting as well as the CMA chairman’s and president’s reports. The meeting also included awards presentations in which companies were recognized for their efforts in pollution prevention, health and safety, and reclamation. The conference also included a tradeshow.

In most coal preparation processes, water is a necessary medium, but the presence of water in coal after it has been cleaned has a negative impact on transportation costs, handling and specific energy values. The utilization of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in the nappy application is well known. The concept of utilizing these polymers was investigated for the purposes of dewatering coal and other fines, generated by preparation processes such as flotation. SAPs are granular highly cross-linked synthetic copolymers with excellent water-absorbing properties. The dewatering process is characterized by three main stages: (a) contact of super absorbent polymer with high-moisture fine coal; (b) separation of dewatered fine coal from super absorbent polymer; and (c) regeneration of used super absorbent polymer, by exploiting its response to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. Preliminary tests showed the separation step to be very difficult. The novel idea of encasing a given amount of polymer in a water permeable cloth solved this problem (of separating the swollen polymer from the dewatered coal). Preliminary tests investigating the effectiveness of the sachets of polymer showed a drastic decrease in the moisture contents of slurries. Furthermore, it was shown that it was possible to regenerate the polymer (still within the sachets) through thermal drying. A full-scale experimental programme was then followed to accurately determine the feasibility of using sachets of SAP. The experimental variables were initial slurry moisture content and polymer dosage. It was observed that the sachets seemed to work fastest and most effectively at high moistures and also at higher dosages of SAP. Regeneration of the polymer was also investigated, using two methods: thermal regeneration and pH-induced regeneration. The experimental variables, for investigating the regeneration process, were method of regeneration and grade of water used. Thermal regeneration at 70°C seemed to work successfully. Although the cost of using thermal energy is still a problem, the safety aspect (fire hazards) has been addressed since the polymer does not ignite when heated, unlike fine coal particles that may do so. The alternative method of regeneration, which exploits the pH-sensitivity of the polymer, was less successful, and further work needs to be conducted.

The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, III., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

"The name bentonite has been applied to a group or series of clay-like materials characterized by an alkaline oxide and alkaline earth content of 5 to 10 per cent, fine grain Giza, high absorptive powers, and usually very strong colloidal properties.Bentonite probably represents no mineral of fixed composition, and its physical properties vary considerably. The type material from Wyoming is light yellow or greenish yellow in color, but from other localities it may be cream colored, white, gray, pink, dark brown or even black. It is exceedingly fine grained, very plastic and highly absorbent. The appearance may be dull or powdeay, but a freshly cut surface usually has a waxy luster. Some varieties have the appearance of wax and may be cut into very thin, translucent shavings. The fracture of the type material is roughly conchoidal, that of other varieties is platey and shale-like, while still others have no typical fracture. Bentonite is highly absorbent; .hen wetted it will absorb more than three times its weight or seven times its volume of water. Some varieties when wetted with water expand to more than six times (some experimenters report eight times) their original volume. The wetted material is exceedingly smooth and soft and feels like soft soap. Unlike most clays, bentonite is easily fusible at a comparatively low temperature.Under a high-power microscope bentonite seems to consist of extremely small, more or less rounded, grains of uniform size, but the texture of most varieties is so fine that individual grains can not be distinguished.Some varieties when finely ground and thoroughly agitated with water will stay in suspension indefinitely, forming a translucent gelatinous mass. The addition of small amounts of acids or sodium chloride seems to have little or no tendency to raid coagulation or settling. Other varieties of similar analysis and appearance go into suspension more easily, but settle out again in a comparatively short time. It has been suggested that the material which stays in suspension indefinitely is a true colloid of the emulsion or lyophilic type."

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

Underground or surface mining is only the first stage in the ore mining process. Once the ore is mined, it is transported to the surface for further processing. Generally, this is done to extract the particular metal or other component of the ore that has commercial value in its purified form. In its raw state, there are typically between 4 and 7 g/t (0.12 and 0.2 oz/st) of valuable material from rock mined. Once on the surface, the ore is crushed and milled in order to obtain smaller rock particles and to expose the minerals that contain the desired metal or component. Mixing the milled ore with water, a process known as ?froth flotation,? can be employed. This technique consists of a series of tanks, or ?cells? through which the process liquid flows. To obtain the maximum recovery, the milling and flotation process will often be repeated a second time. An increase between 100 and 1,000 g/t (2.9 and 29 oz/st) of rock following this stage of the process is typical. Efficient recovery is key to maintaining a profitable mining operation. The measurement and control of the froth flotation process is vital.

Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.
