The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 um. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. The presented methodology predicts the pile head response (i.e. pile head load - displacement curve) and develops the load transfer (t-z) curve of piles in sandy soils under tension forces based on soil/pile properties and soil-pile interaction. The proposed approach improves the prediction of the t-z curve in sandy soils compared to current practice. The method employs a nonlinear soil constitutive model to calculate the mobilized shear stress/strain in soil at the soil-pile interface induced by pile upward displacement. The approach accounts for the influence of the pile slenderness ratio on the predicted t-z curve and is validated through comparisons with measured pile head response and t-z curves from full-scale pile load tests. INTRODUCTION Piles may be subjected to axial uplift forces due to either static loading or cyclic loading. The majority of methods are only concerned with the pile ultimate tensile capacity. However, the mobilized pile stiffness (i.e., pile-head load-displacement relationship) is essential to determine the interaction between the foundation and the superstructure and consequently the performance of the whole structure. Methods that assess the pile ultimate tensile capacity usually assume the failure surface at the soil-pile interface and estimate the local side shear resistance using a lateral earth pressure approach. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC 1986) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE 1991) employed Eq. 1 to assess the ultimate shear stress (τ) developed at the soil-pile interface.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930&apos;s the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the &quot;Minor Lode&quot; system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these &quot;Minor Lodes&quot; particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. Sustainability issues are from rising interest and importance for the mineral industry worldwide. In order to bring them into management processes and to improve decision processes, economic, ecological and social aspects of products, services or technologies have to be assessed. In this paper, the concept of integrated sustainability assessment is presented. Each aspect is assessed with quantitative or qualitative methods. The results of these ecological, social and economic sub-assessments are integrated by the means of Fuzzy Logic in order to regard preferences of decision maker and circumstances of decision situation. An example demonstrates the application of this new instrument.

Control and mitigation of building response to construction activities are assuming a greater role in design decisions for underground construction. Alternatives for controlling building response have multiplied with the continued development of ground modification methods, better control of construction activities that cause ground movements, and increased understanding of building behavior and response. This paper describes approaches to estimating building response to construction-related ground displacements caused by adjacent excavation and highlights the discussion with several case history examples. Examples discussed includes experiences with two, seven-story historic structures, supported by timber piles with granite block pile caps, which were underpinned in preparation for ground-freezing ground stabilization and tunnel construction beneath the buildings. The elevation of each building column was monitored and elevation adjustments were actively performed during construction. The second example examines the performance of a slurry wall braced cut, 45 to 50 feet deep penetrating through a stiff crust into a soft clay layer and associated building response. This cut was immediately adjacent to two, approximately 15-story office buildings, which were supported by deep foundations founded in the stiff crust.

Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

The physical beneficiation of iron ore that has a wide particle-size distribution is problematic, regardless of the process applied, whether dense medium separation, gravity concentration, magnetic separation, or flotation. The problem of particle size is further compounded when there is a significant -10 µm fraction. Generally the approach to a wide particle-size distribution is to split into narrower size ranges and treat each separately. More often than not the -10 µm fraction is not treated but discarded. This approach results in a more complicated and expensive flow sheet and the loss of any potential value in the -10 µm fraction. Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) bench-scale test work was conducted on a haematite-rich material with a particle size of -200 µm. What made this material different was that it contained a 60% -10 µm fraction, hence discarding the -10 µm material was not an option. The objective of the test work was to determine how to maximize the recovery of the haematite across the full particle size range. Given the unusual particle size distribution, it was concluded that WHIMS would be the only practical beneficiation route. The -200 +10 µm and -10 µm fractions were treated separately and together under varying WHIMS conditions. For a given concentrate grade, the mass yield obtained was greater when the total particle-size distribution was treated. The inferred optimum conditions, using the same material, were tested on a pilot-scale WHIMS and similar results were obtained.

Cobalt is currently a critical metal because of the increasing number of electrical vehicles forecast for production. Copper and zinc are base metals that are used in many everyday applications, including vehicle production. Eti Bakir Co. Mazidagi Phosphate Plants in the Mazidagi district of Mardin, Turkey is a multi-product facility that produces cobalt, copper, and zinc, as well as fertilizers, from the roaster calcine. Roaster off gas is treated in a sulfuric acid plant (SAP) and the acid itself is utilized in fertilizer production. The comminution circuit, roaster, SAP, and calcine leaching process were developed by Outotec and integrated with the fertilizer production process implemented by Eti Bakir A.Ş. This paper describes the hydrometallurgical calcine leaching process used at the plant, with a focus on the oxidative pressure leaching of the cobalt, zinc, and copper-containing calcine. The cold and hot commissioning phases of the pressure leaching autoclave start-up are discussed together with experiences from the ramp-up period. The production processes of the copper cathode and cobalt and zinc-containing salts are also presented together with some of the plant’s operating parameters. INTRODUCTION The ETI Bakir A.S. fertilizer plant, Turkey, is located in Mardin Province near the border with Syria, (Figure 1). The leaching plant project was started in 2012. The purpose of the plant is to separate the valuable metals from the calcine produced by the pyrite roasters, which are used to produce a SO2 containing gas for the new sulfuric acid plant. Fertilizer production requires sulfuric acid, and for this reason a sulfuric acid plant was built; customer already had access to pyrite concentrate, which is used as the roaster feed. During the engineering phase of the roaster and acid plants it was noticed that the roasted calcine contained considerable amounts of valuable metals like cobalt, copper, and zinc. To recover these metals, a calcine leaching process was developed at the Outotec Research Center in Pori, Finland. The main process connections of the Mazidagi site are shown in Figure 2.

TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

Longwall and continuous mining are prevalent methods employed by Chinese underground coal operations. The main ground control challenges include roof skin deformation, roof collapse, and outbursts of coal, gas, and water. Microseismic monitoring provides valuable information on rockmass behavior and fracture propagation caused by stress redistribution, active geological structures, or gas build up within the coal strata and the surrounding rockmass. Collecting and assessing seismic data has proven to be an instructive tool for engineers to better assess ground conditions and mitigate seismic hazards associated with mining. The development of intrinsically safe and explosion proof certified seismic monitoring equipment has revolutionized China?s underground coal mines. The use of this technology allows for the optimization of gas drainage at an increased rate of two at a 50% higher purity without any increase in drilling costs. Microseismic monitoring can also be used in identifying seismically active faults and shear zones. This information can be used to assess and revise mining strategies to improve safety and ground stability.

Longwall mining has gained the reputation as being the safest extraction method in underground coal mines. However, one of the most difficult tasks associated with longwall mining is moving the face once a panel is completed. Based on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fatality reports since 1996, longwall face recovery operations have claimed the lives of 5 U.S. miners and have resulted in numerous injuries. Recovery operations can be hazardous because they involve moving large pieces of equipment in very confined spaces. They are also conducted in highly stressed ground conditions due to front abutment loads generated by panel extraction. Shield removal is the most hazardous operation during face recovery because miners are constantly exposed to the unpredictable gob edge. To protect the miners, one or more walking shields, cribbing and/or other supplemental roof and standing supports are typically employed as breaker line supports as each shield is removed. At the Harris No. 1 Mine in southern WV, mobile roof supports (MRS?s) have been used in lieu of traditional walking shields on 17 face moves since 1997. MRS?s are shield-like support units mounted on crawler tracks and are commonly used during room-and-pillar retreat mining operations. For longwall recovery, the two biggest advantages that MRS?s have over traditional walking shields are that they are remotely controlled and are highly maneuverable. MRS?s have contributed to safer shield recovery and shorter move times at the Harris No. 1 Mine. This paper will address both the safety and the operational issues associated with MRS usage during shield recovery. It will also discuss new developments, including the use of the inherently safer battery powered MRS?s, which have been recently certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Around the world, mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of humankind. The winning process in mining operations ends with the depletion of the deposit or its closure if the operation becomes economically unprofitable. After that, a period of post-mining follows which may last for a very long time and which is generally regarded as a period of hazards, risk and high cost. In the USA alone, approximately 500,000 abandoned mines do exist; worldwide, there are millions. In Germany, too, we have had to deal with abandoned mines for a considerable period of time now.

Qualitative analysis of three mineral samples from northern Mozambique was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy, scintillation, and magnetic determination. Chemical characterization was accomplished using ICP-OES and pressed powder XRF after dissolution using microwave-assisted digestion and flux fusion. The samples consisted of a mixture of minerals with tantalite as the major component, with minor amounts of microlite, quartz, mica, accessory garnet, and tourmaline. Incomplete dissolution was obtained using microwave digestion, with maximum recoveries of 90.25 ± 0.06% and 88.90 ± 0.04% for Nb2O5 and Ta2O5 respectively. Complete dissolution using Li2B4O7 resulted in recoveries of 98.5 ±0.2% Nb2O5 and 100.4 ± 0.3% Ta2O5.

"Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."

"Plant 2 at the Kinross Paracatu gold operation in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was commissioned in late 2008. Designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade gold milling operation in the world, Plant 2’s throughput has steadily increased towards its design capacity of 5087 tons per hour.The plant employs a gold-specific flotation scheme to recover the majority of gold, which is present as discrete free gold particles. Additional gold is recovered by jigs in the grinding circuit, and the jig concentrates are reground, upgraded and subjected to intensive cyanide leaching. The flotation cleaner concentrate is reground and leached using a conventional CIL circuit.One year after start-up, with the plant stabilizing operationally, plant circuit surveys were completed by a joint team from Kinross Paracatu and Blue Coast Metallurgy Ltd. The surveys audited the flotation and concentrate treatment circuits to investigate the metallurgical performance.This paper describes the Plant 2 operation and how the surveys were designed and executed. Some of the quality control systems that were employed to provide meaningful data from such a low grade gold ore are described and findings and actions taken to improve metallurgy as a consequence of the surveys are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Paracatu mine is located two kilometres north of the city of Paracatu, in the north western portion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 230 km southeast of the national capital Brasília (shown in Figure 1). The present day Paracatu mining operation, fully owned by Kinross Gold, through its Brazilian subsidiary Rio Paracatu Mineração (RPM) is designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade free milling gold operation in the world.The deposit currently hosts some 1.2 billion tonnes of ore at a grade of ~0.41 g/t gold, hence contains a total gold reserve of over 20 million ounces. At a designed plant throughput rate of 61 Mt/year the mine life goes beyond 2030."

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority&apos;s Wheaton Station and tunnel design was completed and offered for bid in the Spring of 1983. The format was unique to the Authority: a four part, four fiscal year contract developed in response to funding limitations with construction divided into four stages allowing the maximum amount of work to be done each year for the funds available. The bid was based on the entire contract, but was orginally awarded for only the first year&apos;s work. Each year&apos;s work had a maximum funding limitation thus safe guarding the Authority from a grossly unbalanced bid. The Authority&apos;s estimate for this work was $83,871,524. The low bid came in at 61% of this for a total low bid of $51,512,058. The low bidder was ILBAU America Corporation whose home offices are in Austria. Following receipt of the bids (and resolution of objections cited by other bidders who felt that the job could not be done for the $51 Million dollar figure), a Notice-To-Proceed was given on October 5, 1983. The construction contract allows a Value Engineering Change Proposal, called a VECP which is initiated and developed by the contractor to change the drawings, specifications or other requirements of the contract. Among other things the VECP should decrease the contract price while maintaining the service life, reliability, ease of maintenance, and standardized features and appearance and not require an unacceptable extension of the contract time. A VECP must estimate the amount of the net savings

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.&apos; properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency&apos; with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which&apos; follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.
