The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

"Coal fly-ash(CFA) from thermal power plants is rich in Al2O3, which has great potential as an alternative resource for alumina production. In this work, Alz03 contained in the coal fly-ash was extracted using an acid sintering-leaching process. This process was enhanced by aid of power ultrasound during the leaching. The recovery rate of Al2O3 was increased with ultrasound, compared with the similar process without ultrasound under the identical operation conditions. Leaching temperature can be lowered by about 10-l5°C and the processing time reduced by about 50%. The process kinetics were investigated in details for a better understanding of the fundamentals on the effects of power ultrasound. The obtained results demonstrate the potential application in reducing processing energy and increasing production rate.Introduction Coal fly ash is a typical solid waste generated from coal combustion in thermal power station. Vast amount of CF A accumulation lead to serious environmental problems such as air and water pollution, cropland occupation, radioactive contamination, etc. However, CFA is rich in Al2O3 and SiO2 content, so that it has a potential use as recourses for alumina and silica production [1]. Aluminum industry, especially in China, has made a rapid expansion in recent years accompanying with a large amount of bauxite consumption, resulting a urgent demand to develop secondary alumina resources like CF A to maintain a sustainable development of aluminum industry that faces grim challenge [2].Acid leaching is an efficient technology to use in alumina extraction from CF A. Since the particle of CF A is not naturally existed mineral but was formed in molten state at high temperature, the internal Al-O-Si bonds are so strong to separate alumina from the ash particle. Because of this reason, the direct acid leaching [3-6] operated at ambient temperature has low extraction efficiency, approximate 30% to 40%, which is attributed to self inhibition effect from CaS04 generated by reaction between CaO and H2S04 [7-8]. High pressure leaching can efficiently decompose mullite to release A12O 3 content in the fly ash particles, but this requires autoclave material having strong acid corrosion resistance, high temperature (100°C-300°C) and pressure (1.0MPa-2.SMPa) resistance while its operating security is low and its acid consumption is large [9]. Concentrated acid boil process is conducted at near acid boiling point (200 °C - 300 °C) in 4 mouth flask wrapped by electric heating jacket with high mass ratio of acid and ash to achieve high Al203 recovery rate from CFA. Its disadvantages are similar to the high pressure leaching technology except no-pressure, and also the operating solution at nearly boiling point acid may easily spill and splash with additional acid loss and potential safety hazard [10]."

In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operations commenced the planning and design of a sampling and analysis system for the new 50 Mt/a Cape Lambert Port B (CLB) facility. Current sampling systems at the ports consist of automated robotic, mass-based sampling protocols employed at Dampier, and semi-automated, time-based sampling systems operating at Cape Lambert Port A.The new sampling system at CLB has brought together a fully automated sampling and analysis system utilising time-based sampling, with the capacity to sample ore products of medium quality variation as defined in ISO 3082 (ISO, 2009). The CLB system is required to sample at shiploading rates from 6000 t/h to 13 440 t/h and provide full load-port analysis. The sampling approach is to proportionally extend primary increments (of varying mass relative to shiploading rate) to a standard length using variable speed aero-belt conveyor systems. This enables a fixed number of secondary cuts to be achieved for all primary increment masses and to be delivered to the automated cell. The cell is required to be capable of concurrently processing four individual shipments, each containing multiple cargoes.Achieving the target sampling precision for all export cargo sizes has culminated in the planning, design and construction of the largest automated iron ore port laboratory in the world. The CLB sampling and analysis cell was commissioned in Q3 and Q4 2013. Ceramic materials exhibit dispersion results after being subjected to various levels of stress, from the point of view of mechanical strength. With the focus on sustainable development and to improve the strength of these material, was incorporated ornamental rock waste into clay in up to 10% in mass to conform some samples, that was fired to 750ºC, 850ºC and 950ºC and submitted to technological tests. This paper presents an analysis of the technological properties of the samples through the use of Weibull statistic to determine which the best firing temperature for these red ceramic materials. The Weibull Modulus indicates a greater homogeneity for samples with 10R at 950ºC.

In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

"Previous work indicated that the annual per-capita consumption of raw aggregate material averages about 10 tons; half of which is produced by blasting. Given a population of approximately 320 million in the United States alone, this amounts to 1.6 billion tons of blasted material annually. It was also estimated that up to 20% of the blasted material in aggregate operations is smaller than 6.35 mm (1/4inch) in size. Thus, about 320 million tons (i.e. 1 ton per capita) of byproduct is produced annually and sold at significantly lower prices or potentially discarded in waste dumps."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field test program in the Pittsburgh coal seam to investigate the effect of water sprays in the suppression of respirable dust being formed while cutting with a continuous-mining machine. Emphasis was given to the location of spray nozzles on the top and bottom of the cutting boom. Results showed that (1) sumping caused about 60 percent of the dust escaping the face area, and shearing and loading caused the other 40 percent; (2) during sumping, top and bottom sprays were equally effective in dust suppression and reduced dust ~13 percent; (3) during shearing and loading, bottom sprays reduced dust 61 percent and were about 50 percent more effective than top sprays; (4) the combination of top and bottom sprays was slightly more effective than the separate systems, but water consumption increased 60 percent; and (5) inclusion of throat sprays decreased dust reduction by removing some of the water from top and bottom sprays where it was more effective.

THAT the copper industry is in serious straits is admitted. So are the lead and zinc industries, and both lead and zinc are tariff protected. Conditions in the Western lead, zinc and silver mining districts are desperate. These are illustrated by the present disastrously low prices of these metals compared with the levels of two and three years ago and by the comparative rates of metal production and the present activity of the western mining camps. The January production of copper was 32.2 per cent of the 1929 average rate, of steel was 32.3 per cent of the 1929 average, while January production of pig iron was only 27.6 per cent of the monthly average of 1929. The copper industry is only one of many industries that are suffering in this tragic depression. It has been exceedingly prosperous and will be prosperous again when business recovers. Its difficulties are not unique and it does not deserve the tariff equivalent of a dole. The burden of subsidizing through an effective tax or tariff the minority group of high-cost mines would be a heavy one on the consuming public of the United States. On the basis of 1929 consumption figures, an effective 5c. tariff would result in an increased copper bill to the country of over $109,000,000, of which the electric manufacturers would contribute $26,000,000, the telephone and telegraph companies $16,000,000, and the automobile manufacturers $14,000,000. And of this total bill, only $33,000,000 would go to those who are urging a tariff and the balance of $76,000,000 would be paid to those who do not admit either its necessity or usefulness under present conditions.

"The theoretical technique of computational modeling and the experimental determination of the enthalpy of adsorption of a ligand molecule onto a mineral surface deliver the same output parameters and, therefore, complement each other in investigating the affinity of different ligand types for mineral surfaces.This study ran parallel experimental tests and computational calculations to determine the enthalpy of adsorption of a series of increasing chain length xanthates onto a pyrite surface. The outcomes showed that, while the absolute energy values were different, the trends were similar. Both computational and experimental approaches showed that the extent of the interaction of the xanthate molecule increases with increasing carbon chain length. The computational values were larger than the experimental values, which could be explained, in part, by the addition of water to the computational system, which resulted in a decrease in the heat of adsorption on the (100) surface, compared to the adsorption of the collector in a vacuum. The computational method showed that, in the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the most exothermic reaction was obtained when the two xanthate sulfur atoms bridged two pyrite 5-coordinated iron atoms. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted for each of the C2, C3, C4 and C5 chain length xanthates.The experimentally determined exothermic increase in heat of adsorption for the addition of each CH2 group was found to be -8.17 kJ/mol. The contribution of the thiol head group was -34.9 kJ/mol. Previous studies on self-assembled monolayers have shown that these values are compatible with lateral interactions between CH2 groups and the exclusion of water. This study provides a rigorous experimental and computational approach which is intended to afford confidence in modelled data for the screening of new ligands for flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONComputational modelling is a fast and cost-effective method of screening collector molecules for the efficacy of their adsorption onto mineral surfaces. However, it is desirable to measure the computational outputs against experimental outputs to check for congruency. Computational modelling and experimental microcalorimetry both deliver the same output parameter: the energy of adsorption of the molecule onto the solid surface. These techniques are therefore ideally suited to complement one another in investigating the affinity of the interaction between collector molecules and mineral surfaces."

A reconnaissance of the chrome and manganesel ore deposits of Cuba was made in the spring of 1918 by Albert Burch, representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the writer, representing the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the United States Government as to the location, character, size, and availability of the Cuban deposits of the ores of these important steel-alloy metals. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the Island. Mr. George A. Wright, of Baracoa, Cuba, a minirng engineer especially familiar with the chromite deposits of Oriente Province, was a member of the party from Feb. 25 to Mar. 20. It was possible to visit most of the chrome-ore deposits that seemed to be of promise, but there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Furthermore, no attempt was made to examine the extensive chromiferous iron-ore deposits of the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas districts, as these deposits cannot be regarded as sources of chromium except indirectly. At the close of the field work the essential data concerning the quantity and quality of ore probably available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, in the event of the continuation of the European war, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve, were furnished to such Government bureaus as were interested, including the Shipping Board and the War lndustries Board, and as soon as chemical analyses of the chrome ores could be obtained, a press bulletin on the subject was published by the Geological Survey. In the present paper the engineering data and tonnage estimates contained in the unpublished notes of Mr. Burch have been freely used, and their helpfulness is hereby gratefully acknowledged. The study of "bottom-hole samples follows in natural sequence the study of samples obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1930, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs.. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, That physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing Tells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental data were obtained in the study of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at higher pressure, and later became mixed with the original undissolved gas.

Granite ores are composed of silicate minerals and a variety of valuable REE (rare earth elements)-bearing minerals, however the processing technique to recover these valuable minerals is not yet developed. In this study, the recovery of REE-bearing minerals by dry magnetic separation and wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS)-settling from surface sample and from drill core sample, respectively, of a granitic REE-Zr-Nb ore deposit was investigated. The two samples have different mineralogy however in both samples, light REE are commonly contained in REE carbonate minerals while Y and heavy REE are commonly contained in zirconium silicate minerals and pyrochlore. The liberation size of the REE-bearing minerals in the two samples ranges from 10-250 ?m. Previous flotation testwork conducted on the drill core sample reported high recoveries of La2O3 (88%) and Ce2O3 (88%) but low recoveries of Y2O3 (42%), ZrO2 (17%), and Nb2O5 (29%). The objective of this study was to obtain higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling. Both processes implemented the application of a low magnetic intensity to initially separate the ferromagnetic minerals then a high magnetic intensity to recover the REE-bearing minerals. The results showed higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling indicating the potential of magnetic separation and gravity separation in recovering the heavy REE-bearing minerals. WHIMS-settling is more recommendable than dry magnetic separation because of its applicability in treating a wider range of particle size. In the WHIMS-settling, the light REE, Y, and Zr minerals were recovered mainly by applying four stages at high magnetic intensity of 21,500 gauss while the weakly magnetic pyrochlore was recovered mainly by decantation of the nonmagnetic slurry after a short settling time of 0.25 to 0.50 h. MR. J. F. MYERS, Consulting J3eneficiation Engineer, Greenwich, Conn.: In the written discussion contributed by Mr. F. C. Bond in item ( 2) (page 515), speaiking about the significance of the ratio of mill diameter to the make-up ball diameter, he states: "When this ratio exceeds 100 the power and capacity of the mill are de-creased"; and the paragraph ends with a reference to the 30 per cent ball volume "with some de-crease in mill capacity". I believe this broad statement is incorrect. When we are dealing with a non-cataracting mill, pre-ceded by a good rod mill, there is a slight increase in capacity, but the power does drop. The second point that I consider needs consideration is Mr. Bond's item (8), Proper Mill Speed (page 516). This paragraph should be qualified to cover single-stage mills only. It does not apply where a rod mill is followed by a non-cataracting ball mill. The statement as is, with no qualification, gives an erroneous idea of proper mill speeds.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. To enable the analysis of stability for a mine feasibility study a variety of geotechnical engineering parameters need to be obtained. At the early stage of a project it is usual for those responsible for the study to require a wide spatial distribution of RC holes in order to define a resource at the lowest possible cost. By the time a geotechnical study has commenced drilling priorities have usually switched to improving the definition of a resource, by drilling with diamond coring methods in the central area of the main orebody. The usual timing for geotechnical data collection is therefore after a wide distribution of holes have been drilled but which contain little geotechnical information. Conventional methods employed usually involve estimation methods, including book values and examination of disturbed core, or expensive additional drilling. With downhole geophysical methods we can economically take advantage of existing holes to obtain continuous values for density, defect orientation and ranking, elastic modulus values, unconfined compressive strength estimates and fracture frequency. This paper presents the results of a geophysical study and discusses the advantages and potential pitfalls of the method as compared to conventional methods of data collection.

THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National Railway line. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and at present is hoisting 1,350 tons of ore per day. The shaft consists of three compartments (see Figure 1, sketch B). Hoisting is done by two skips in balance, one of which is interchangeable with a cage. Sinking had been carried out at three different periods. From the surface to the 550-foot level, the sets had been spaced at seven-foot intervals, from the 550-to the 1,060-foot level at six feet, and from the 1,060-to the 1,500-foot level at five feet. During the five years of operation, the shaft had become so badly worn, due to spill from the tipples and, to a certain extent, from the loading pockets, that re-timbering was considered necessary. It should be explained that no crushing is done underground because of the ad verse effect this would have on the efficiency of the sorting. The grizzly rail clearance above the ore pockets is fourteen inches and consequently the ore hoisted is extremely coarse. More than average spill from the loading pockets and tipples under such conditions is inevitable, and it is debatable whether underground crushing with consequent increased sorting costs would not be justified. The cost of complete re-timbering according to standard practice would have been prohibitive both directly and indirectly: A lengthy shut-down of the shaft, with the consequent disorganization of the staff and workmen, could not be considered. Accordingly, it became necessary to devise some method of repair that could be carried to completion in a very limited period of time. The shaft timber for the first 250 feet was not in need of repair. From the 250-foot to the 1,060-foot level the wall plates, posts, and blocking were in good condition. These had been protected by a one-inch plank lining put in at various periods during the past three years without interfering with hoisting operations. The end plates and dividers, however, could not be protected in this manner because of the lack of skip clearance. It was decided that, if the dividers in this section could be replaced, the shaft would be as satisfactory as if completely re-timbered. Several factors had to be taken into consideration in deciding on a suit-able method of repair. In the first place, the tipple plates had to be re-designed. To complete the job in a reasonable time, not only had work to be done on the tipple, but simultaneously from several points in the shaft itself. Since all power cables, pipe lines, etc., were in the manway compartment of the shaft, this compartment had to be left undisturbed.

A search through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared from metals of commercial purity, as follows: electrolytic nickel 99.60 + 0.35 Co; chemically purified silicon 99.79 per cent plus impurities of Fe 0.027, A1 0.008, Ca 0.014, C 0.004, N² 0.10; and cobalt 98.82 per cent plus impurities of Ni 0.42, Fe 0.12, CaO 0.27, S 0.012, Mn 0.10 and SiO² 0.15. It should be noted that the largest impurity in cobalt is nickel, one of the alloying elements. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared from metals of commercial purity, as follows: electrolytic nickel 99.60 + 0.35 Co; chemically purified silicon 99.79 per cent plus impurities of Fe 0.027, A1 0.008, Ca 0.014, C 0.004, N² 0.10; and cobalt 98.82 per cent plus impurities of Ni 0.42, Fe 0.12, CaO 0.27, S 0.012, Mn 0.10 and SiO² 0.15. It should be noted that the largest impurity in cobalt is nickel, one of the alloying elements. A composição química da camada de óxido formada durante operação em um forno de reforma a vapor por 70000 h em um aço inox resistente ao calor grau HP-Nb, foi analisada através da espectroscopia Raman confocal, com o objetivo de correlacionar as características químicas e morfológicas dos óxidos com os diferentes estados de envelhecimento. Os espectros Raman, adquiridos pontos aleatórios da camada de óxidos, revelam que os óxidos de Fe (-Fe2O3 e Fe3O4), bem como os óxidos mistos NiFe2O4 e NiFeMnO4 são as espécies predominantes no estado de envelhecimento I. Amostras envelhecidas dão origem a espectros característicos de Cr2O3, MnCr2O4, Fe3O4 e NiFe2O4, em consonância com estudos recentes reportados na literatura.
