The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. AN excerpt from the Odessa Isvestia Vechernia, dated April 24, 1927, and translated by P. Routzitzky, summarizes a report by Professor Preobragensky ad-dressed to the Russian Government. Professor Preo-bragensky writes in regard to newly discovered potash deposits in eastern European Russia. Near Solikamsk in the Perm district, about 100 miles east of the Ural mountains and on the Kama river, large deposits have been located and the belt has been traced southward about 25 miles. Subsequently the search for potash salts has been transferred to the Berezovsky district, near Nikolsk, on the Kosva river, about 70 miles north-east-of the city of Perm. Toward the end of March, 1927, at a depth of 800 ft., drilling at the Levensk salt works revealed potash salts in, definite strata. The bed has a thickness which extends from a depth of- 245 to 307 meters (latest data in middle of April, 1927) and has not been bottomed yet. Professor Preobragensky goes on to say that these operations have definitely, developed very large de-posits, the limits of which are still unknown. There is at least an implication that the reserves far exceed those of Stassfurt, Germany. For European use they are, of course, much less accessible, for by through rail they lie 1200 miles east of Petrograd. Further, no particulars are given as to the potash content. It is to be supposed that the salt occurs in the Permian beds that extend north and south along the west flank of the Ural mountains, as the localities mentioned .all lie within the area so mapped on the new geologic map of Russia issued by the Scientific and Technical Di-vision of the All-Russian Council of Soviets in 1922. It is interesting to note that these salt beds are of the same geologic age as those of 'the Stassfurt region and of the west Texas-New Mexico district, in which the U. S. Bureau of Mines is at present drilling.

Reported is work done on processing of steel mill effluents in the areas of dewatering and separation. Much of the waste from these operations is in the form of sludges from scrubbers, in which the primary constituent is iron oxide. Recycling of the sludge&apos;s magnetic fraction has become economically attractive in order to reduce the overall volume placed in landfills. The objective of this research is to determine the effectiveness of combining magnetic and cyclonic forces, to recover iron oxide particles from waste water stream, while decreasing the volume to be disposed. Three different size hydrocyclones, operating within the field of a quadripole magnet, were tested using varying feed pulp densities of magnetite, magnetite/dolomite, blast furnace (BF), and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slurries. In the first three cases, the percentage of magnetics recovered increased to greater than 95%. The limiting operational factors are; high pulp density for small cyclones, which can cause flow blockage within the magnet field, and extremely fine particle sizes (<2 microns), which cannot be recovered. The results indicate this technique can remove virtually all the magnetic particles from some steel effluents to a 40-50% weight percent solids pulp, on an in line continuous basis.

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company&apos;s mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison&apos;s Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

The iron production has generated many tonnes of very fine residues with high concentration of iron. In addition, during the recycling of galvanised steel scrap in the steel making processes the zinc and lead are largely concentrated in the dust. These kinds of dusts are usually dumped beside the metallurgical plants and cause environmental problems. Therefore the metal recovery from the metallurgical residues has become a major interest not only from the viewpoint of metals recycling but mainly from the viewpoint of environmental land protection. The thermodynamic analyses and laboratory experiments suggested that the metals could be recovered from metallurgical wastes by reduction roasting and by plasma smelting processes. The iron rich pellets with very high metallization may be obtained from metallurgical wastes by the reduction roasting and the inert slag and pig iron could be produced by plasma smelting processes. In both cases the iron rich products are suitable for the steel production. During the reduction roasting or plasma smelting the high volatile zinc and lead metals were removed and enriched as a secondary dust, Zn-Pb concentrate, which is suitable for processing in zinc and lead smelters. Suggested processes are commercially feasible and environmentally friendly without any solid or liquid waste.

The classic criteria of the preparation of the charge for the smelting of copper concentrates in at flash furnace considers the mass and energy balance from the chemical and mineralogy composition of the concentrates. The operation parameters fixed with this method don&apos;t assure the stability of the operation and the critical problems of the slag quality and dust formation occurs very often. This paper presents the results of a laboratory test that allows the prediction of the behavior of concentrates blends in the view of the minimization of the dust formation and the magnetite control in the slag. The combustion of different copper concentrates and blends were done in a drop tube furnace The results show that the magnetite and dust formation don&apos;t have a linear behavior with the weight proportion of the blend and some optimal blends of 2 or 3 types of concentrates can be identified. From the reasonable hypothesis that the qualitative behavior of blends in the drop tube represents the real behavior in the burner, the preparation of the charge with this approach could help to solve those operational problems.

The froth foam seal topping system is part of a system for remote sealing of mine passages using flyash transported pnuematically from the surface. Making the final 5 percent of the seal with a foamed-in-place fire retardant polyurethane reduces the required flyash volume by 50 percent and provides a more reliable seal. Foam components are held at the surface under proper conditions of temperature and pressure; then conveyed down the borehole through individual hoses and mixed at the bottom with a static mixer. The polyol component is pre-mixed with fluorocarbon-12 which, when released from system pressure in the mixer, boils and causes the foam to expand. Difficulties in handling this particular foam formulation are offset by a flame spread index well below the 25 level by ASTM E-162 normally required for under-ground applications. Isocyanate, polyol (TDI) and catalyst are conveyed to the downhole package by three separate lines. Five additional lines operate the valving and convey solvent so that the mixer and package lines can be flushed immediately after foaming. The eight-hose bundle is provided in segments of several lengths so that bore-hole depths can be matched. Cast-in-place plastic cylinders hold the bundle together and transfer the weight of the hose through a special quick-release clamp to the crane&apos;s wire rope. The downhole package and hose bundle are deployed using a specially designed winch and crane system capable of borehole deployment to 1500 feet.

The Bureau of Mines developed, by core drilling, the property of Nevada Scheelite, Inc., from October 5, 1943, to February 24, 1944. Claims of the corporation are near Rawhide in the northern portion of Mineral County, Nev. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in the lateral and vertical extensions of a tactite zone which was being mined for scheelite. Production from this zone to January 1, 1944, was said to be 64,500 tons, with a recovery of 50,618 units of tungsten trioxide. The development work was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping the areas, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling, trenching and sampling. Eleven holes were drilled for a total footage of 2,365 feet of holes.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

[Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide L; as in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 carrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had known that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.]

"Characterizing the spatial distribution of rock stresses is a challenge, especially in the geologically complex environments typically found at most metalliferous mines. Therefore, instead of focusing, specifically, on the task of making stress measurements, the engineer should instead attempt to develop a better understanding of the interaction between stress, mining geometry and rock mass behaviour. This paper demonstrates such an approach using a Canadian Shield hardrock mine case study, in which geomechanical models are used to relate stress, mining geometry, and rock mass properties to observed excavation response, and numerical modelling is used to better quantify this interaction.IntroductionUnderstanding how the mine geometry, field stresses and rock mass interact to produce the observed rock mass response to mining can be a significant challenge. Consider our present ability to quantify the basic geomechanical design input data. Mine geometry is normally quantified in more detail than is required for analysis purposes. Our understanding of rock mass strength and stiffness is far from complete, but established procedures do exist to obtain estimates of these parameters based on index and laboratory testing data and field mapping. Our ability to quantify field stresses is probably the most limited, in part because stress measurements are difficult and expensive to carry out, and in part because the stresses vary to an unknown degree from point to point within the rock mass. The engineer must, therefore, consider whether or not stress measurements are justified and, when they are, where the average stress state needs to be quantified and how many of which type of measurements will be required to determine the average stresses.Such was the case at Ansil mine, a massive sulphide deposit in hard rock located at a depth of more than one kilometre in the northern Québec portion of the Canadian Shield. The Ansil orebody was relatively rich, but small, with the potential for significant stress-related problems. As a result, geomechanical design had to be done carefully from the start – there would be little opportunity to modify the mining strategy once production had begun, and the economic consequences of stope dilution and rock mass instability would be severe. An extensive stress measurement campaign was carried out, but the determined stress magnitudes were unexpectedly low. The designers were, therefore, faced with a dilemma:"

During the past 15 years the number of reportable mine fires has declined. A decline in the number of reportable fires is a gross indicator that allows experts to say something about the underground coal industry generally: There has been some improvement in overall mine fire preparedness. However, such an indicator is less reliable as a predictor of readiness at any particular operation. An indication of fire fighting preparedness would have to be assessed from evidence gathered at the mine site. In other words, there are two levels from which to view the problem. On a general level, there has been significant improvement in the industry&apos;s fire response capabilities over the past two decades. Specifically, however, little data has been gathered on a site-by-site basis to determine what improvements might be made on a local level. These improvements would move beyond regulatory compliance. It is expected that this manuscript, based on work conducted at an underground coal mine in the western United States, will help to focus attention on some central concerns involving this critical issue.

A comprehensive report on extensive experimentation in degasification of the Pittsburgh Coal seam is presented. Detailed accounts of the procedures and results are given for permeability tests, vertical bore hole tests, measurement of gas flow from sealed drainage areas, horizontal rib hole tests, and water infusion tests. The removal of methane gas from coal seams in advance of mining is not a new idea with mining men—much attention has been given to the possibility for many years. In other parts of the world, a principal concern has been in the recovery and utilization of the gas and a number of successful projects have been developed in Europe and elsewhere. In this country, the principal motivation has been related to the safety aspect with some possible side benefits concerning costs and efficiency in mining as secondary objectives. To date, experimental work in this country has been largely or entirely exploratory to determine bed characteristics with respect to the liberation of combustible gases to investigate or establish the possibility of degasification in advance of mining and as an aid in projecting mine ventilation systems to provide for safe, effective and economical handling of combustible gases liberated during mining. With these objectives in mind, the School of Mines and Engineering Experiment Station at West Virginia University, in cooperation with the Christopher Coal Co. of Osage, W. Va., initiated some experimental work in May 1952 and the project has been more or less continuous since that time. The work has been centered entirely in mines of the cooperating company in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa. LOCATION AND GENERAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA The principal mining in the area involved is in the Pittsburgh coal seam which lies at the bottom of the Monongahela series of the Pennsylvanian. The Pittsburgh coal in the area is generally uniform in its structure and physical characteristics. The bed thickness averages about 7 to 8 ft and the coal has a characteristic blocky structure as the result of pronounced face cleats and definite, but somewhat less pronounced, butt cleavage. It is a medium volatile coal, averaging about 37 pct, and is marketed principally as a steam fuel and for metallurgical purposes. The Pittsburgh coal outcrops along the Monongahela River and dips gradually, but not uniformly, slightly north of west (about N75°W). The westward extensions of the bed, from the areas contiguous to the Monongahela River which have been heavily mined, constitute the principal reserves and are all well below drainage with the depth of cover increasing with the distance from the river. In general, with deeper cover, it may be expected that methane liberation will be more of a problem in future mining as compared to areas mined previously; therein lies the interest in possible de-gasification in advance of mining. Fig. 1 shows the Pittsburgh coal area in the vicinity of Morgantown in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa., in which the experimental work discussed is located. Fig. 2 shows the contours on the Pittsburgh coal in the test area. It will be noted that the first two bore holes for the experiments were at the edge of a bench or terrace with considerable change in the gradient in the immediate vicinity of the test holes and that the same general condition applies to later test areas. Mining is intensively mechanized in the area and in the mines involved in the experimental work with corresponding rapid advance of working faces a typical characteristic. The sheet-ground deposits of the Tri-State district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to II ft.)—rather flat, with an easy dip to the west—and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. Developing Tractors and Trailers A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver&apos;s seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Tig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½-in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the spring: could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dud. After four months of use, the .tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (MINOSAL) concentrator is located 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Copiapo, Chile. It processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4.2 kt/d (4620 stpd). In 1982, Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL to explore the property&apos;s potential. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). At the time of the pur¬chase, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly 50 cents/ lb. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansions, the concentrator is a combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

The Bureau of Mines - American Gas Association ( EM - AGA) carbonization test has been used to determine the carbonizing properties of 66 American coals and a larger number of coal blends . A summary of the results obtained for the first 30 coals , including 6 blends , has been published ,4/ and results for individual coals have been reported as the investigations were completed . A bibliography of all publications pertaining to this work has been issued recently . Many of the coals were carbonized at 800 ° and 900° C. in two sizes of retorts ( 13- and 18 - inch diameters ) ; and , because the quality of coke is affected by changing the size of the retort , this report has been prepared to show the average physical properties of coke from the two sizes . This report also purposes to extend the correlation of the physical properties of coke with the rank of coal made by Fieldner and Davis in their summary of the EM-AGA tests on the first 30 coals .

A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.
