The objective of the mission was basically to study the utilization of engineers and engineering technicians and their interrelationship in the Soviet Union. Beginning with their graduation from the engineering institutes and technicums, we hoped to learn how the graduates started out in industry, what their training on the job was, what sort of work they did, and how they worked themselves up within their profession. However, it turned out that, as our host was the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education, most of our visits were to educational establishments. Our itinerary covered Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov, Rostov, Baku, and Tashkent, with a side trip to Samarkand. In all, we visited 13 technical institutes, three technicums, and five industrial plants or enterprises, as they are called there. Our trip was one of only four weeks. Our observations were limited by the few cities and enterprises we were permitted to visit. Nevertheless, we did come back with some definite impressions and conclusions which we feel should be of interest to engineers, educators, and those concerned with the relative economic and technical power of the USSR and the U.S.

We have gathered here in Pittsburgh, at the Nineteenth Annual Safety Congress, in order to advance the cause of safety. Although my personal inter- est in this movement alone would have been sufficient to insure my presence here, specific duties have brought me to this congress in an official capacity. My responsibilities as the head of the United States Bureau of Mines, which makes the promotion of safety in the mining and allied industries one of its major activities, necessitate my attendance. My obligations as president of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, an organization closely allied to the bureau and which has for one of its objects the public recognition and reward of outstanding achievements in safety, require that I be present at this time. This morning, my job is to present the Holmes safety certificate to the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. First I will remind you of the nature of this safety association, named in honor of the first director of the Bureau of Mines. After Mr. Holmes' death, in 1915, a number of influential organizations banded together to commemorate the name of this leader in the conservation of human life. In order that you may appreciate the significance of an award by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, I shall read you the list of 24 national organizations which comprise its membership:

No iron-smelting enterprises, now dormant, had been operated successfully. Iron made at both of hoes installations proved to be satisfactory for normal pig-iron uses. "In copper plating processes, a fraction of raw materials are incorporated to the final products, while other portions are discarded as effluents. In this study, the application of electrodialysis (a membrane treatment process) was studied for treatment of wastewaters from cyanide-free strike baths, in order to reuse the components of this bath: copper and HEDP. The synthetic solutions studied consider 1 % of ion concentration of the bath used in this process, simulating the rinsing waters to be discarded. The electrodialysis allowed a percentage extraction up to 73% of copper ions and 72% of HEDP from the effluent. Complexes formation between the acid and copper indicates the possibility of recovery of components in the same compartment, obtaining a concentrated solution of these substances that can be reinserted in the process, for compensating drag-out losses. A diluted solution is also obtained, that can be reused as water in rinsing tanks.IntroductionIn metal finishing industries, contaminants in wastewater and the type of treatment required are determined according to the type of operation [l]. Generally, electroplating industries employ conventional wastewater treatments, e.g. oxidation of cyanide and chemical precipitation. This stage promotes reactions with soluble compounds to produce an insoluble precipitate, removed by physical separation. The sludge is dried by press-type filters [2].In this manufacturing sector, part of the raw materials are discarded as hazardous waste. The cost of discarded compounds and the treatment and disposal of waste may compromise profit margins. In addition, water consumption per unit of production stimulates the development of methods able to recover and reuse the largest possible amount of water [3].In some plating processes, cyanide-based substances are used as complexing agents and as raw materials in form of metal salts [4]. However, the toxicity associated with cyanide has been promoting research for the development of new raw materials in plating processes.A study conducted in Brazil [4] evaluated the modification of a commercial cyanide-free bath for processes of copper coating on Zamak. In the performed study, a new alkaline copper bath was formulated using l,hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), an organic compound known for forming stable complexes with metal ions.As results of the study, the operational conditions and the formulation of a bath to obtain adherent, uniform and bright layers were established (Table I) [4]."

The thermal plasma process has been applied to the preparation of nanosized tungsten carbide (WC1-x). The reduction and carburization of the vaporized chloride by methane-hydrogen mixtures produced nanosized WC1-x powder, with a small amount of WC or W2C phase. The products were characterized using XRD, carbon analyzer, and TEM. The effects of plasma torch power, the flow rate of primary plasma gas (Ar) to generate plasma flame, and the addition of secondary plasma gas (H2) on the product composition were investigated. The tungsten carbide (WC1-x) powder had a particle size less than 30 nm. The powder was treated under hydrogen atmosphere to fully carburize the WC1-x, and W2C phases to WC as well as remove excess carbon in the product. Finally, WC powder with a grain size less than 40 nm was obtained.

DURING the past twelve years the underground shaft of the United States mine at Bingham has been sunk an additional 2000 ft. with stations and pockets cut every 200 ft. without interrupting the mining of 600 tons of ore per day and the advancing of 1500 ft. of development per month. Following is a brief description of the way the joint work is conducted. The vertical underground shaft is a three-compartment shaft with outside dimensions of 6 ft. 4 in. by 15 ft. 6 in., and inside dimensions for each compartment of 4 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 8 in. The manway compartment of the main shaft is used as the hoisting compartment in sinking operations; it is partially lined with 2 by 12-in, lagging and a bucket is used without guides or crosshead. Preparatory work includes the placing of a bulkhead in the manway compartment, 60 ft. above the lowest station or level, the installation of a hoist, a head sheave, a fleet sheave, a-signal system, air and water lines, and a trap door for handling waste.

The need for a sustainable development of ore deposits makes it imperative to be innovative and mindful in creating an economically and environmentally viable operation, while maintaining a good working relationship with the various stakeholders involved in developing and operating a large and complex mining project. This is becoming immensely important as gold ore deposits are becoming more mineralogically complex along with lower grades presenting both metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed in mitigating risks and improving project economics. This paper presents Barrick?s approach to development of strategic technologies for our long-term sustainable growth through conversion of valuable resources into reserves for both our green-field development projects and the expansion of our existing mining operations. Some of the key strategic solutions, including mineral processing, metallurgical and energy technologies, developed by Barrick and their impact on some of our complex gold and copper-gold ores will also be discussed in this paper. "Block and panel cave mining methods are being increasingly proposed as they allow massive, deeply situated ore-bodies to be mined economically at a time when discovery rates of significant near surface deposits are declining. Cave-to-Mill, a mine-to-mill approach for block cave mines, defines ore block models with respect to both mine and mill performance. A cave-to-mill study for the New Afton block caving operation focused on identifying value opportunities related to fragmentation and sorting for a future lift as development progresses deeper. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and either dispose of or process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. As an outcome of the study, the variation in cave fragmentation size and the sensitivity of mill throughput to feed size was examined. To evaluate the amenability of bulk and particle sorting, Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis and X-Ray Fluorescence sensors were tested. A conceptual bulk and particle sorting flowsheet is presented. Grade data from regular underground sampling was used to predict the performance of a bulk sorter. A heterogeneity analysis of material reporting to drawpoints helped to identify areas of the extraction level that experience high variations in grade and thereby stand to benefit from dedicated ore and waste material handling systems should underground bulk sorting be implemented.INTRODUCTION Block and panel caving are low-cost underground mass mining methods that are suitable for excavating weak, massive and steeply-dipping orebodies. Accordingly, cave mining methods have predominantly been used to mine copper porphyry and diamond bearing deposits. Due to the increasing depletion of near-surface orebodies, it is expected that block and panel caving methods will be increasingly used in the copper-gold industry. Their implementation holds significant potential to extend the life of existing open-pit operations by providing an economic means to access ore located at depths that are beyond the practical limits of open-pit mining. Examples of cave mines proposed for British Columbia include the Kwanika Mine, Red Chris underground, Kemess Underground project, and the Iron Cap and Mitchell cave mines of the Kerr-Sulphurets and Mitchell (KSM) project (Moose Mountain Technical Services, 2017; Imperial Metals, 2017; Golder Associates, 2017; Tetra Tech, 2016)."

Commercial modeling software and increasingly efficient computers enable today computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to be used as a tool for a more comprehensive understanding of the flash smelting and flash converting processes. CFD modeling can be used for design purposes in many technological areas, but some relevant physical and chemical phenomena are still missing in the commercial CFD solver packages. Therefore, Outokumpu has developed several subroutines for solvers to describe analytically the phenomena in the flash smelting environment. CFD sub-models of the copper concentrate and matte combustion, the particle-particle-wall interactions and for more accurate radiation properties of the gas-particle suspension are needed to ensure reliability of numerical simulations on the flash smelting and converting vessels. Several basic combustion phenomena can be modeled with a number of commercial solver packages, but own models for combustion must be included in the case of sulfides as the feed. Mathematical models for copper concentrate and solid matte combustion have been developed during the last decade. They calculate compositions of the particles and temperature, based on extensive experimental research work in laboratory scale furnaces with validated kinetic parameters and temperature measurements of reacting particles. Inside and near the concentrate burner, the standard particle tracking methods do not include the particle-particle interactions and the particle-wall interaction is too much simplified to describe properly the particle collisions with the distribution cone. Therefore, additional models for the particle-particle as well as particle-wall interactions have been written and implemented. For thermal radiation, models for the emissivity of a gas mixture and for calculating the particle absorption and scattering coefficients have been developed and tested. In addition, the advanced radiation model can be used i.e. in the enhanced simulation of off-gas cooling in the heat recovery boiler area of the flash smelter.

The Baum-type jig used so widely to clean bituminous coals has not been adopted for anthracite. If proved suitable for anthracite, its use might lower preparation costs in some plants. Cleaning trials on a Pennsylvania anthracite in a laboratory-size Baum-type jig were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to provide indicative information that would be helpful in determining whether the cost of a full-scale installation would be justified. Clean coal surpassing standard anthracite specifications was obtained in all sizes from Stove through No. 5 Buckwheat. Recovery effi¬ciencies were acceptable down to 3/16-inch size, but there was excessive loss of coal in the finer sizes. Thus the fine refuse produced in a commercial plant might re¬quire retreatment. A comparative cleaning trial in a dense-medium pilot plant provided a recovery efficiency only l percent higher than obtained in jigging.

Objetivo deste trabalho foi simular o processo de deformação plástica severa, mais especificadamente o processo de colaminação acumulativa (Accumulative Roll-Bonding-ARB) em aço baixo carbono, por ensaio de torção a morno. Os corpos de prova foram inicialmente recozidos à 900ºC por 5 min e resfriados dentro do forno com potência desligada. Realizou-se o ensaio de torção à 500ºC aplicando cinco passes de deformação de 0,8, totalizando uma deformação verdadeira de 4, à uma taxa de deformação de 0,1s-1, bem como deformações intermediárias de 0,8; 1,6; 2,4 e 3,2. Para verificar a influencia da temperatura no processo, realizou-se o ensaio também nas temperaturas de 600 e 700ºC. As micrografias mostraram que ocorreu refino do grão, típico do processo estudado. Ensaios de nanodureza Vickers mostraram um aumento considerável na dureza, mostrando que o teste de torção é uma ferramenta eficiente para simulação do processo ARB.

The experiments described in this paper were undertaken primarily for the purpose of measuring the quality of work done in screening and sorting in American concentrating-mills for Prof. Richards' work on Ore-Dressiag. For this purpose a series of samples of screened and sorted products was obtained from four different mills, and a plan was devised for sizing these products, and for tabular and graphic representation of the results. The results, together with discussions as to their significance, so far as they serve to interpret the quality of mill-work, have already been published in the above-mentioned work, and it is not the purpose of this paper to duplicate the work, except so far as is necessary to explain and illustrate methods and appliances. The sizing of coarse products was clone by sifting on screens of sheet-metal with round punched holes. These holes ranged in size from 64 mm. to 0.5 mm. in diameter. Below the smaller limit, punched metal, suitable for this work, was not obtainable, and the sizing was carried on by sifting on woven wire-sieves. The finest woven wire-cloth obtainable gave a hole 0.073 mm. square, and the finest silk bolting-cloth pave a pentagonal hole with an average diameter of 0.069 mm. Even these very fine screens served no useful purpose in sifting certain of the very fine classifier-products, of which all, or nearly all, passed through the finest screen. A new adaptation of a method of settling and decantation with water in beakers was therefore worked out, and by this means the sizing mas carried down to grains of a diameter as small as 0.012 mm. Renewable energy, in the form of wind and solar, has emerged as main source of energy in the modern society. The wind industry has substantially grown over the last two decades to become a key player in providing energy to public. Wind turbines are getting larger, taller, and more efficient every year. The foundation is a major component of the wind turbine system. The wind turbine foundation must provide short and long-term stability for the overall turbine to allow continuous and safe turbine operation for energy production. The turbine serviceability and stability requirements must be geotechnically and structurally satisfied. In North America, major foundation types currently utilized in the wind industry include gravity spread foundation, mono pier foundation, and pile foundation. In this case study, a Post Tensioned Pile Cap (PTPC) foundation was used to support a 3.15-3.4 Megawatt turbine with 125M Rotor supported on 87.5M-hub-height tower. Soil anchors in the form of Auger-Pressure-Grouted-Displacement (APGD) piles and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles were utilized. Four distinct subsoil conditions were identified, and for which four pile designs were adapted. Due to the occasional encounter of stronger soils at 50 to 55 feet (15.2 to 16.7 m), shorter pile design was preferred. To satisfy the design uplift load, pile post grouting were utilized to increase the shaft capacity of the piles. In this paper, the pre-production pile load test program will be described. The pile load test procedure, analysis, and results will be presented. A discussion will be provided, which led to the selection of the optimum pile design to support the high tension loads taking into consideration pile length limitations.

INTRODUCTION Of all the numerous geological hazards that threaten the well-being of urban areas in the United States, probably none is so widespread, persistent, and diversified as surface subsidence (HRB-Singer, Inc., 1977). Simply defined, subsidence is the vertical displacement or sinking of the ground surface caused by either natural phenomena or man's activities. The downward movement, however, can be accompanied by horizontal movement, strain, tilt and even by a locally upward movement. Damage to structures and the environment can result from any of these movements. Extracting subsurface materials, fluids and solids, accounts for most man-induced subsidence in the United States. Among all the mining-related subsidences, the collapse of voids created by underground coal mining has been the major cause in inflicting surface damage (Comptroller General of the United States, 1979). Subsidence from coal mining may occur within a few weeks or be delayed for years, depending upon the mineral layer's depth below the surface, the overlying rock strata's characteristics, the extent and methods of mining that were employed, and the time deterioration of pillar and mine structure. Unless underground resources are not mined or control measures are implemented to prevent or minimize damage, some degree of surface subsidence and its accompanied deleterious effects are often inevitable. The ways to control the subsidence and minimize surface damage may include: 1. Precautionary measures built into new structures or surface features. 2. Preventive works applied to existing structures or surface features. 3. Mine design incorporating special underground layouts. 4. Any combination of the above measures. Upon the enactment of Public Law 95-87, the Secretary of the Interior, through the recently created Office of Surface Mining (OSM), was authorized to promulgate rules to regulate mining reclamation including subsidence control. Proposed on September 18, 1978, these rules were finalized, following public comment and hearings, on March 13, 1979, as part of the permanent regulatory program for the regulation of surface mining and reclamation operations which include the surface effects of underground mining. On January 28, 1981, Secretary Watt of the Department of the Interior issued an order to re- quire all agencies to identify with recommendations all regulations which are believed to be excessive, burdensome or counterproductive. Also on February 17, 1981. President Reagan issued Executive Order No. 12291 requiring all Federal agencies to conduct a regulatory review to make a determination that each promulgation of a regulation is clearly within the authority delegated by law and consistent with Congressional intent (Federal Register, 1981). As a result, OSM initiated the regulatory reform to revise the permanent regulatory program. Following a brief discussion of the technical aspects and the effects of subsidence on man and his environment, this paper presents a historical overview of how rules and regulations are used to govern the subsidence related problems. The development of the regulation of subsidence under Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA or the Act) are also discussed, including the new regulations being developed under the regulatory reform program. SOME TECHNICAL ASPECTS Am EFFECTS OF FINE SUBSIDENCE An extensive historical review of mining subsidence is given by Zwartendyk (1971) and Shadbolt (1978). Comprehensive technical presentations have been given by Henry (1956), King and Whetton (1957), Hall and Orchard (1963). Muller, et al. (1968). Grard (1969), Voight and Pariseau (1970). Kapp and Williams (1972), Cummins and Given (1973), Brauner (1973) , and NCB (1975). A theory of surface subsidence due to underground mining was perhaps first fundamentally stated by a French engineer, Toillez, in 1838, and formulated by a Belgian engineer, Gonot, in 1839 (Goldreich, 1913, cited by Zwartendyk, 1971). A helicopter-mounted lake-sediment and lake-water survey was carried out over Grenville rooks in the Renfrew area (parts of Renfrew and Lanark counties) during four days of October, 1975. In the course of this survey. 1150 square kilometers were covered, with 246 lake-sediment and 276 lake -water samples collected from every body of water on which the helicopter could land. Sample sites, which averaged one per 4.6 square kilometers, included lakes, ponds, beaver ponds, swamps and marshes. Lake-sediment samples were taken using a G.S.C. sampler. Waters were collected directly into polyethylene bottles. At each sample site , surface and bottom-water pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity and temperature were measured using a Martel. Water Quality Analyzer. The lake sediments were air dried and then ball milled to pass a minus 80-mesh sieve. Lake sediments were analyzed for U by delayed neutron activation and for Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Ni and Co by atomic absorption techniques. The organic content of the sediments was determined by loss on ignition at 450 °C. Lake waters were acidified with nitric acid on the day of collection. The U content of the water s was determined by fluorometry; the Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn , Ni and Co contents of the waters were determined by solvent extraction - atomic absorption techniques. A close relationship was found between bodies of granitic, syenitic and pegmatitic bedrock and elevated U levels in the lake sediments. The Hurd Lake and White Lake granitic intrusive were encompassed by an annulus of higher U activity. Field inspection revealed that the U concentrations occur within a zone which may represent a contact metamorphic aureole. Within these complexes, anomalous concentrations of U appear to be associated with Mo. Information derived from the lake-water data reinforces the geochemical distributions outlined by the lake-sediment survey . This survey was carried out in order to develop optimum sampling and analytical procedures for geochemical reconnaissance of the Grenville Province that may be carried out under the auspices of the Uranium Reconnaissance Program.

IN the last two years the E.C.P.D. committees having to do with the inspection of engineering schools for possible accrediting have been concerned with the engineering content of some of the mineral industries courses. Originally the discussion arose with regard to engineering geology, or geological engineering, afterward broadening to metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, agricultural engineering, and other branches not pertinent to this discussion. Some members of visiting committees took the attitude that they probably would have to accredit these types of training as included in the engineering group if they met the average standard set by the mining schools, though they questioned -whether they were really engineering.

THE travelling grate coking process was developed by Shawinigan Chemicals, Limited, at their Shawinigan Falls plant. The first production unit went into operation a month prior to the outbreak of the war. Since then a substantial part of the coke used in the manufacture of calcium carbide has been produced by this process. In the following will be given a short account of the development work, a description of the process and the equipment, a discussion of the properties of the coke, the economics of the process and its future possibilities. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The carbide industry is a large consumer of coke, one ton of commercial carbide requiring for its production 1,200 lb. This coke must meet certain specifications in order to be acceptable. It should have a low ash content, preferably below 8 per cent, and the sulphur and phosphorus content must not be above specified limits. The size of the coke is also important. If it is too large it has to be crushed before it can be used in the furnaces, and if it is too fine it may have to be screened and briquetted. In addition, it must be dry. Although it was generally possible to purchase coke, including petroleum coke, and coke fines, in the quantities required, it became increasingly more difficult as time went on to obtain coke of a suitable quality at an attractive price. It was therefore natural for us to look to coal carbonization as a means of basing the supply of the fundamental raw material for carbide manufacture on something more solid than the shifting conditions of the coke market.

The AngloGold Ashanti - Cuiaba mine sought innovative approaches to minimize lateral development and stope extraction time while maintaining optimal gold recovery and minimizing dilution. The stope 8GAL EXT 30 was selected as a case study. Traditionally, conventional blasting methods in such a scenario would necessitate either a single mass blast or slot development at each end of the stope. These methods typically compromise recovery and dilution or increase development time and risk. Additionally, conventional wired detonators require workers to re-enter the stope between blasts to load blastholes and connect detonators. The wireless initiation system offers a solution by initiating blastholes using magnetic induction signals that can penetrate rock, air, and water. This technology allows a pre-charged stope to be mined without requiring workers to re-enter the area between blasts to charge and connect blastholes. Engineers from Orica and AngloGold Ashanti designed a new extraction sequence utilizing the wireless initiation system. The process began with the opening of one end of the stope using a conventional slot and wired electronic detonators. Subsequently, pre-loaded rings were fired in three blasts to extract the opposite end and the intersection. The 8GAL EXT 30 stope was successfully mined using this technology enabled method. Each blast was meticulously monitored, and the stope void was scanned to assess blast performance. The results demonstrated a 4.6% improvement in recovery and a 16% reduction in dilution compared to the initial plan, and reduced exposure of people to hazardous locations in the stope. These results represent an additional value of USD 200k, gained from implementing wireless initiation to enable this particular blasting schedule.

In the UK the development of the science of strata control has been strengthened by a resurgence of interest in the specialism of roofbolting and its associated techniques. The evolution of the theories and practices of strata bolting in roadway stabilisation is discussed. Practical experiences are considered, principally the use of Australian techniques, the relationship between bond strength and annulus and the effects of stress in the ground. Areas of new technology such as cable bolting, injection anchors and on-board bolters are also discussed. The recent advances in computer technology and rock testing equipment and methods have provided the opportunity to simulate ground behaviour under various conditions. Computer modelling developments and the use of techniques to predict ground behaviour are described.
