Radiotracers were demonstrated to be of considerable value in a study of the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena. The interaction had characteristics of both chemisorption and chemical reaction, being complex because of the nature of the galena surface. Sorption was rapid and markedly reversible, and flotation occurred at relatively small amounts of dithiophosphate sorbed.

?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

Geological data provides the foundations for the mining value chain. It is used to underpin the modelling and planning and consequently optimise downstream business decisions. However, it is often forgotten or taken for granted. End users often assume the data to be sound without verification. Geological data can be considered a company’s number one asset. Subsequently, the storage, use and management of this data need careful curation and time invested in preserving and protecting it. An established polymetallic mine with 20 000 drill holes could have a data replacement value in excess of $500M at 2020 prices, excluding labour and salary costs. The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the ‘JORC Code’) provides guidelines for Public Reporting. Within the code, Table 1 requires discussion around the different types of geological data, its collection and use. What is needed is additional details regarding the validation and integrity of the geological database. A comprehensive guideline specifying minimum geological standards for geological databases has been developed. This expands on the critical points outlined in Table 1 of the JORC Code. This guideline can be used by companies where geological databases are managed in-house or used to assess these services’ outsourcing. This guideline will ensure that geological data is reliable and unadulterated and can be used with confidence. Using this guideline will assist in preserving the investment of geological data in the mining value chain

"The Highmont copper-molybdenum deposits are at Gnawed Mountain in the Highland Valley porphyry copper district, 125 miles northeast of Vancouver. This district is near the center of the lower Jurassic Guichon Batholith, where a north-trending swarm of porphyry dikes is crossed by west-northwesterly structural belts in which fracturing, intrusion of porphyry and breccia, and mineralization areconcentrated.The Highmont deposits are 2 miles southeast of, and in the same southernmost structural belt as, the Lornex deposit. The main deposits occur on either side of a composite dike of granodiorite, porphyry and breccia which strikes west-northwestward in fractured quartz diorite. North of the dike, the adjacent Nos. 1 (East) and 2 (West) zones together contain 150 million tons of open-pit ore mineable in two separate pits. These two zones will support a 25,000-tpd mill with a grade in the first five years of approximately 0.46 per cent copper equivalent. South of the dike, the Nos. 3 and 4 zones are partly explored and will provide large additional reserves. In these various zones, chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite form disseminations and fracture-fillings accompanied by quartz, K-feldspar, tourmaline, sericite, specular hematite and other minerals. Bornite extends for varying distances north of the dike, beyond which chalcopyrite is locally accompanied by pyrite. Higher-grade mineralization tends to coincide with fracture swarms, or with shear zones and faults which largely parallel these swarms. The ore zones are reflected by geochemical soil anomalies which show some glacial dispersion. LP. surveys gave weak but significant responses, expressed as per cent frequency effect. The ore zones occur within a strong magnetic gradient, but do not show a significant magnetic response."

Process optimisation and continuous improvement are usually acknowledged when making a process more effective, efficient and transparent. During the last few decades, thousands of companies around the world have used total quality concepts in order to establish a continuous improvement process in their companies. Typically these companies apply some kind of Kaizen-type tools and expect results in the short term; however, the great majority of companies are poorly implementing these continuous improvement programs.Usually the most common reasons for failure of the program are lack of commitment from leaders, lack of discipline and engagement from the team to follow process and lack of clear targets for the program. When the results do not come at the expected timeline, it is common to simply drop the current process and apply a different approach from another company or consulting firm.This paper will explore some successful cases of companies that have invested time and effort to establish a reliable and sustainable process of continuous improvement. The focus will be case studies of mines and smelters around the world that use the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle to increase productivity with the best services and lowest costs. A metodologia aplicada para alcançar os resultados almejados baseou-se em experimentos realizados com informações de bobinas reais, sendo utilizados softwares distintos para o desenvolvimento do projeto, validando os resultados obtidos através de análises de desempenho, com a correlação entre respostas conhecidas e as obtidas com a utilização da rede neural, assim como, a análise do erro médio quadrático das respostas obtidas com a aplicação, sendo simulados na etapa de treinamento da rede neural ou verificados experimentalmente com a execução da ferramenta desenvolvida.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. Um forno a arco elétrico é um tipo de forno industrial que usa uma corrente elétrica alternada para produzir calor. Estes equipamentos servem como uma alternativa para os altos fornos tradicionais, e desempenham um papel importante na produção de aço. Em um forno de arco elétrico, a corrente elétrica passa através dos eletrodos de grafite, do aço e de outros metais, o que resulta na produção de aço de modo mais rápido e eficiente. A queda de tensão no arco é, praticamente, proporcional à distância entre o eletrodo e a carga. O eletrodo corresponde ao polo positivo (+) e a carga o negativo (-). Em corrente alternada os pólos, positivo e negativo, trocam de posição a cada meio ciclo da tensão de rede. Sob condições de arco, forma-se, no eletrodo e na carga, uma finíssima camada altamente ionizada devida a uma altíssima concentração do campo elétrico nestas zonas. No forno o arco se extingue quando a corrente se anula e reacende, quando a tensão volta a crescer. Devido a constantes quebra de eletrodo foi montado o grupo de trabalho com objetivo de reduzir o consumo dos eletrodos, otimização do consumo de energia, redução do Power On, aumento da potência média e redução nas quebras de eletrodos. Esta implantação foi extremamente importante pois o mesmo está garantindo a continuidade operacional, de forma segura e confiável, de um dos equipamentos mais importantes para a produção de aço na Usina.

The recycling of steel is a crucial aspect of the shift toward a sustainable metals industry. The emphasis on steel recycling through the introduction of the scrap based mini-mill concept is also matched with a desire for greater product quality and reduced environmental impact, which, in turn, has generated important innovations. There have been significant advances in the technology for recycling steel over the last 20 years and this paper will provide an overview of these developments and discuss future directions in steel recycling including scrap management, control of tramp elements, electric arc furnace technology and ladle metallurgy.

In 1984, as part of a project to evaluate Alaskan occurrences of certain critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated a columbium-bearing regolith on upper Idaho Gulch, near Tofty, AK. The regolith is derived from weathering of a dolomitic marble and consists mostly of iron oxide minerals with accessory apatite, zircon, xenotime, rutile, monazite, and the columbium minerals aeschynite, columbite, and ilmenorutile. Two regolith lenses contain 340,000 lb of columbium resources at an average grade of 0.07 pct. Calculated composite concentrates from two regolith samples (approximately 200 lb each) contained 53 and 57 pct of the columbium at grades of 0.97 and 0.86 pct, respectively. In each case the grade could be improved to 1.1 pct Cb with a sacrifice of 9-pct recovery. The regolith's mineralogy, trace-element geochemistry, and similarity to descriptions of other columbium-enriched regoliths suggest that the underlying marble may be a carbonatite. The lack of associated alkalic igneous rocks and the stratiform nature of the regolith, however, may be interpreted as evidence for sedimentary origin of the marble. The marble and regolith are a lode source for some of the minerals in the Idaho Gulch placer deposit.

Almost every mining engineer who has had charge of extensive underground workings will have observed how often directions as to course and levels, deduced from careful theodolite measurements, have been slighted or disregarded by mine-foremen and shift-bosses, and how often these tedious measurements had to be repeated, even for minor works, such as ventilation-drifts or winzes, in order to carry them on with the required or desirable regularity. Besides the time and care absorbed by theodolite surveys, there is still another inconvenience, namely, the interruption of transportation during the time of observation, and, in heavily producing mines, the loss consequent upon such interruption. In proposing a subsidiary instrument to the theodolite, it is my purpose not to present a new one, but simply to recommend to the consideration of American mining engineers one which has been in use in nearly all the prominent mines of Europe for many decades, and has there fulfilled its purpose admirably. I refer to the mining or hanging compass (Fig. 1). At my urgent request, the firm of Keuffel & Esser, of New York, have lately constructed this instrument in a form which adapts it better to use in this country. By the addition of the trigonometer, the banging compass becomes at once an instrument which will prove of value even in the hands of foremen and practical miners, who have little or no knowledge of trigonometrical calculations. Probably many will say that me have no use for needle-instruments ; that our modern theodolites are of such perfect description, and leave so little to be desired, that the introduction of a compass would look like a step backwards compared to the fine results obtained by angle-instruments. "The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

Installing ground support correctly is not an easy task, whether lack of operator training, poor ground conditions or underperforming equipment. Confirming the quality of installation can help with planning and remedial works and help to maintain a safe working environment. A 2?m bolt with 700?mm of encapsulation will pass a 10?t pull test (assuming ground conditions permit); however, it will not provide any data of the unencapsulated length and thus the ability to withstand corrosion. Complimentary testing in the form of non-destructive testing (NDT) can provide factual data that leads to the assessment of the quality of the encapsulation. By improving the quality of the encapsulation, the risk of corrosion is reduced, the ground support durability is improved and hence the asset life is enhanced.This paper presents a case study of a trial using the NDT system RokTel™. Installations of varying quality were installed and tested. The characteristics tested were corrosion, load and free length. These characteristics can be tested and assessed for cable bolts, thread bar bolts and split sets. The aim of this paper is to present NDT testing as a viable method for assessing installation quality and ongoing performance of the ground support.CITATION:Jones, B and Chappell, M, 2014. Over the past three years the UK together with Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy have been taking part in a EU funded Leonardo da Vinci programme. More recently EFEE have participated in the project known as the EU15/10/200715/10/2007Excert project which is aimed at addressing the perceived loss of explosives expertise in several EU nations. This could have implications for explosives safety and industrial competitiveness. The paper outlines the work that has so far been done in phase 1 and describes the work planned for the second phase of the project. The paper will describe work in the UK to develop competencies for all explosives workers in both the civil and defence sectors. These competencies in the form of National Occupational Standards have now been approved in the UK and are accompanied by a range of 24 new National Vocational Qualifications launched in May 2006. The paper will show how the standards define knowledge and skills and how these form the basis for vocational qualifications as well as higher education awards and professional qualifications. This UK initiative is now being considered in other EU countries and the project has now been extended to also include Germany, France, Portugal, Czech Republic, Lithuania and Estonia. To support the occupational standards and qualifications work is also being carried out to improve learning provision in the explosives area. In addition to formal educational and conventional training courses a series of workplace learning initiatives are being pursued as well as internet learning packages. Examples of these initiatives will be given.

"INTRODUCTION Burning refuse dumps are a common and by no means pleasant sight in most coal-mining distracts; they have been and largely continue to be accepted as a necessary, if undesirable, adjunct to coal-mining operations. The odor, smoke, and fumes emanating from the burning dumps have caused much property damage, as well as aroused unfavorable public sentiment in the areas thus affected; and there is reason to believe that, in at least some cases, they have had an adverse effect on the health of certain communities, adjacent to mines. In some instances such communities have been owned or controlled by the mining companies and in others they are incorporated towns.After the start of World War II, it was necessary for Great Britain to take prompt and effective measures to extinguish or at least blanket the burning refuse dumps at collieries, since the fires served as beacons for the enemy planes; the problem thus became a matter of national security rather than one of local inconvenience. If the United States should become involved in a bombing war, these dumps might became a source of national danger, hence now is a propitious time to at least make a start on available methods of solving this problem. Much progress was made in Great Britain in extinguishing the dump fires that had burned for years and in preventing newly made dumps from taking fire.Burning refuse dumps have not been a national problem in the United States, but they are a nuisance and frequently a danger and often a fruitful cause of poor public relations on account of the odor and fumes. Many progressive coal-mining companies are taking effective and positive action in trying to extinguish old dump fires and to build new dumps so they are less likely to fire.The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the problem as well as on ways to extinguish refuse dump fires, to describe methods of constructing dumps that probably will prevent them from firing, and to point out some of the danger that exists when dumps are improperly built and when they are on fire."

The Marquette range, on which are situated the iron mines of Mar-quette County, together with a few in Baraga County, Mich., extends from a point 10 miles southwest of Marquette westward for 30 miles. The tracts are usually a multiple of the standard 40-acre parcel, which is the smallest government subdivision of a square mile or section. About half of the mines are held in fee, these being owned by the older mining companies. Some of them date back to about 1880, and a few are as early as 1850. During the past 40 years most of the mines opened have been on leased lands, the royalty being either for a stated amount per ton or a percentage of the selling price of the ore at the lower lake ports, or the selling price on board of cars at the mine. The first merchantable body of ore discovered in the Lake Superior district was found, in 1845, at what is known as the Jackson mine, near Negaunee. This ore was hard hematite. After unprofitable attempts had been made, in 1848, to smelt it in forges, shipments were begun to lower lake ports, which increased rapidly upon the completion of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, in 1855, and the railroad from the mines to Marquette, in 1857. Beginning with the Pioneer, in 1858, a number of small charcoal furnaces were built to smelt a part of the product. At various points in the upper and lower peninsulas, large charcoal furnaces are still making iron from the ores of the Marquette range. In connection with these furnaces are byproduct plants. As the deposits were opened up, soft ore was encountered, but for a few years this was disregaided, as only the hard ore was used. Underground mining was begun about 1880 and during the next few years the open-pit mines producing high-grade ore were exhausted. The first mines in the district were owned by the Jackson, Cleveland, Lake Superior, Lake Angeline, Champion, Iron Cliffs, Humboldt, Republic, and Michigamme companies. Many of these companies have been merged in the holdings of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which controls most of the tonnage of the district.

THE stratigraphical geology of the vicinity of Buffalo has always been of great interest on account of its bearing on the origin and history of the Niagara-river gorge, between the Falls and Lake Ontario. Recently, however, the character and thickness of the strata which underlie Buffalo have acquired more practical and economic importance on account of their relation to the possible occurrence of natural gas in commercial quantity near the Niagara river. In a paper presented at the Duluth meeting (l887), on " Petroleum and Natural Gas in New york State" (Trans., xvi., 906), I gave a brief description of the four wells which had been drilled by the Buffalo Cement Company between 1883 and that time. One of these wells is 1305 fret deep; and, at the time that my paper was finally revised for the Transactions (June, 1888), it was still an open question whether the drill in this well had reached the Niagara limestone, or had penetrated the Medina sandstones and shales, which latter are boldly exposed in a number of localities in the district, hut more particularly along the Niagara river in the vicinity of Lewiston and Qneenstown. The difficulty in this geological question at Buffalo has lain in the fact that no reliable determination could be made of the thickness of the strata included between the Corniferous limestone, immediately below which the drilling of the Buffalo gas-wells was commenced, and the Niagara limestone. On the other hand, the strata included between the latter limestone and the middle portion of the Medina sandstones and shales, have been minutely measured and studied in the Niagara gorge below the Falls by many American and European geologists. The first reliable section of these strata was constructed by Professor Eaton, and published in 1824 in his report on the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the District adjoining the Erie Canal. This section, extending from Lake Erie to Lewiston, is complete, with the exception that no thickness is given to the Salina or Onoudaga salt group,

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver as well as the manganese contained in some of the domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method is an initial leach of the manganese with aqueous SO2 followed by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach for the extraction of silver with cyanide solution. Refractory silver in these ores is either bound by the high-valence manganese, chemically resistent to cyanide leaching, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when -1 in +1/2 in (-2.5 cm + 1.3 cm) ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct for silver and 65 to 96 pct for manganese were attained in laboratory column leach tests using the dual method on the same size ore pieces from six domestic deposits.
