AWIDE variety of subjects was discussed at the Wednesday sessions on Non-metallic Minerals. W. M. Weigel as chairman, presided at the morning session, and W. M. Myers, vice-chairman, in the afternoon. In the morning session a paper by W. N. Logan on "Mineral Wool Resources of Indiana" was read by H. H. Hughes. Mr. Logan explained that as Indiana is the principal source of mineral wool, the paper might well he entitled "Mineral Wool Resources of the United States."

The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

Coal, as well as a large part of other minerals in Canada, is produced by surface mining methods. This has resulted in short and long-term accumulation of waste rock in dumps. Two main problems arise from the flow of water through these dumps: stability of dumps and the impact on stream flows. In recent years, a number of mines have started placing waste rock in valleys for general disposal or far constructing mine access road ways. All these have created challenges in the following areas: effective design of dumps and flow-through dams; stability monitoring of the structures; environmental impacts downstream by way of increased amount of fines in suspension, sedimentation, and toxic substances; and long-term status of flow and flood. Similar situations also exist in many civil engineering structures. This paper discusses the status of rock drains and the immediate and future research needs.

Os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos, em geral, aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e satisfatória resistência à corrosão, características associadas à possibilidade de realização de tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento. Nesse contexto, no presente trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos das condições desses tratamentos na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de um aço inoxidável martensítico de médio teor de carbono. Foram consideradas três temperaturas de aquecimento na têmpera e seis temperaturas de revenimento. A avaliação microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de dureza. Foi observada a elevação na dureza do aço com o aumento da temperatura de aquecimento na têmpera, assim como a dissolução dos carbonetos presentes no material. No revenimento subsequente observou-se o aparecimento do pico de dureza referente ao endurecimento secundário a uma temperatura de 500°C.

of high specific gravity, resistant minerals that form from mechanical concentration by waves, currents, and winds in marginal-marine environments. These sediments are enriched in critical minerals such as titanium, zirconium, and REE. Cretaceous beach-placer sandstones are found in the Colorado Plateau of northwestern New Mexico. Originally discovered by airborne radiometric surveys for uranium in the 1950s, these beach-placer sandstones are being re-examined with modern methods as potential sources for critical minerals. Selected beach-placer sandstones have been sampled, mapped with ground radiometric surveys, and analyzed with whole-rock and trace element geochemical methods. Mineralogy is being determined with optical methods, XRD, and EMPA. Zircon, rutile, ilmenite, and monazite are the primary heavy minerals of interest found in the studied deposits. Initial results show that the sandstones contain up to 1.4% total REE, 29.4% TiO2, and an estimated 4.9% ZrO2. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show distinct light REE and minor heavy REE enrichment, as well as pronounced negative Eu anomalies for each deposit.

"In the unconformity-type uranium deposit at Midwest Lake, mineralization is associated with extensive host rock alteration, which affects the metamorphic basement as well as the overlying Athabasca Group sandstones. Host rock alteration is manifested by (I) transformation of clay minerals [kaolinite into illite and chlorite (sudoile)]; (2) bleaching due to removal of hematite from the lateritic paleoweathering profile and the overlying red bed, Athabasca Group sandstones; (3) loss of coherence of the sandstone resulting from corrosion of quartz cement; and (4) in the immediate vicinity of high-grade ore, development of a clay envelope due to residual enrichment of clay minerals caused by massive dissolution of quartz. Clay mineral transformation and bleaching are the most prominent and the most widespread alteration effects, forming haloes that extend for several kilometres along the strike of the mineralized structure and also constitute distinct alteration pipes that rise f or several hundred metres above the unconformity to be truncated at the present top of the bedrock.Although the two haloes are largely congruent features, cross-culling relationship s indicate that clay mineral alteration represents an earlier phase in the history of the deposit than the large-scale bleaching that gave rise to the superimposed bleaching halo.Because clay mineral alteration and bleaching are intimately tied to the mineralization and extend well beyond the limits of the actual orebodies, host rock alteration may be used as an ore guide in exploration and drill-hole evaluation. In this application a third hydrothermal discharge centre was identified, as yet untested for are, which is located between the hydrothermal centres associated with the two known orebodies of the deposit.It is estimated that host rock alteration may enlarge a potential drill-target by a factor 10 - 20X. Information on the configuration of bleaching haloes can be obtained from systematic core logging, whereas diagnostic clay mineral alteration is readily identified by means of automated, quantitative XRD techniques."

"The control of fugitive dust in high-latitude openpit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomena resulting in complicated flow regimes as well as atmospheric inversion due to the lack of adequate insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (one conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional openpit mine geometries were simulated for different seasonal conditions using a computational-fluid-dynamics package from Software Cradle. The airflow was solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model. The concept of particle tracking was used to predict the flow patterns of dust particles. For various climatic conditions and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size, from PM0.1 to PM10, and concentration were generated at various locations and dispersed by the airflows inside the openpit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit were reported at various time intervals. In the summer season, airborne dust particles were quickly transported outside the openpit domain. In the winter season, however, the development of atmospheric inversion significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the openpit domain. IntroductionThe computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) modeling of openpit mines is challenging. In a recent paper (2015), we presented different constraints and challenges in developing a three-dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. The simulation results of a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model by Shi et al. (2000) showed that both the mechanical and thermal forces are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an openpit mine. Alvarez et al. (2007) used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium-sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al. (2010) introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. (2014) used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual openpit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (1) air-advection (10 m/s, or 33 ft/ sec)-driven mechanical turbulence, (2) surface-heat-flux (240 W/m2, or 76 Btu/ ft2-h)-driven thermal buoyancy and (3) both air-advection- and surfaceheat- flux-driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence- induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (nonbuoyant case)."

De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

"Construction of embankments up to 34 ft in height for twelve ramps and roadways needed for the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A project required ground improvement. The subsurface conditions, consisting of up to 30-ft thick layer of highly-compressible peat and organic soils, would induce up to 8 ft of primary and 4 in. of secondary consolidation settlements to the embankments over a long period of time. Innovative ground improvement solutions were needed to meet unique challenges posed by the poor subsurface conditions, space and existing utility constraints, aggressive construction schedule, and massive size of the project. A variety of ground improvement techniques were utilized in six different zones of the embankments to limit settlements and ensure stability of the embankments. These techniques included preloading with surcharge and prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), load balancing using light weight fill, and concrete column rigid inclusions (RI). Additionally, augercast piles with load transfer platform were used under an existing bridge with low vertical clearance. An innovative approach consisting of preloading with surcharge and PVDs followed by installation of RI was needed in one of the six embankment zones with the worst, i.e., very soft, soil conditions. The design of the RI was performed by a specialty ground improvement contractor (SGIC) using Plaxis 2D and 3D softwares. The performance of the ground improvement systems was verified and monitored by load tests and instrumentations. This paper presents details of the ground improvement design, construction, monitoring results, and lessons learned, with a focus on the RI.INTRODUCTIONNew Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A is located within the cities of Bayonne and Jersey City, in Hudson County, New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) identified Interchange 14A as an area of mass congestion in need of redevelopment to improve the increasing demand of traffic and roadway safety. The New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A project included the construction of twelve (12) new roadways, in addition to the construction of four new bridges. The limits of construction are shown in Fig. 1.The fill height required to construct the roadway embankments varied from 2 to 34 ft. The proposed embankment side slopes varied from 6H: 1V to 2H: 1V. Additionally, mechanically-stabilized-earth (MSE) walls were utilized to retain the embankment fill along some segments of the roadways. As shown in Table 1, the proposed roadways were divided into six zones, based on location, subsurface condition, and embankment height."

Así, la aplicación de la tecnología de fitorremediación se presenta como una excelente opción para la descontaminación y restauración de los más de 8,000 relaves abandonados existentes en el Perú.

CLIMAX ore is an altered and highly silicified granite, about half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral recovered and most of it is intimately associated with the quartz in fine veinlets. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Although the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make this profitable. The pyrite ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the problems is its elimination, and that of pyrite iron, from the final product. On account of the high degree of dissemination of the molybdenite and the necessity of eliminating the iron and copper, fine-grinding followed by flotation is the only known feasible method of concentration. Two factors, peculiar to Climax ore, have a predominating influence on the metallurgical attack: (1) Molybdenite is one of the most easily floated minerals. Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. The three most commonly used methods of direct-reuse recycling, the coldstream process, bloaching and the Bernard or zinc process, are reviewed,

New measurements of graphite and cementite solubilities in ferrite have been obtained to resolve disagreements among previous data. To measure graphite solubility, specimens of iron were equilibrated with rarious carburizing atmospheres at temperatures be-twee~z 480" and 1435°C. The carbon activity of each atmosphere relative to graphite was taken from published data. After quenching from each equilibration treatment the concentration of carbon (typically 10 pprn by wt) was determined from the height of the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum. A few inclividual analyses by combustion support the reszdts of Smith on the solubility of graphite near the eutectoid temperature. Combination of these combustion and internal friction analyses determines In a, (at 0.01 wt pct) = 24,000/RT - 12.72, where a, is the activtity relative to graphite in ferrite at fixed cornposition. The same specimens were used to determine the solubility of self-stressed cementite precipitates. The results indicate solubilities of 6.3, 23.2, and 68 pprn carbon by wt at respectively 400°, 500". and 600°C. The once large discrepancy between the cementite solubility determined by internal frictiori and that calculated from flee energy data has been almost completely resolved. A recent study1 (hereafter designated I) on the solubility of cementite in a iron did not fully resolve the disagreement among previous data. The remaining disagreement is illustrated by the phase diagram in Fig. L The data of I are represented by the line labeled "stress-free" cementite. They determine a heat of solution of cementite of (14.8 * 0.2) kcal per mole which contrasts with the (20 * 1) kcal per mole derived from Smith's graphite solubility2 and the formation energy of cementite.3 Toward resolving this disagreement we have obtained new data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite. METHODS As in I the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum was used to measure the concentration of carbon dissolved in ferrite. This method relies on the relation C=kQ-1 [1] in which C is the concentration of dissolved carbon, Q-I is the Snoek peak height, and k is a proportionality factor which is a function of the peak temperature, polycrystalline texture, and other parameters characteristic of the ferrite lattice. To determine true heats of solution via Eq. [1], it is necessary to establish that k is independent of the temperature from which the specimen is quenched. Some evidence on this point is contained in a separate report.* Additional evidence is shown by the data points in Fig. 1. These represent the Snoek peaks of two specimens carburized to about 10 ppm C, copper plated, and quenched first from 888º then from 588°C. The copper plate was removed before each Snoek peak measurement. These data show that there is no detectable dependence of k on quenching temperature. The solubility of graphite was determined by repeatedly carburizing various specimens of iron wire with gas mixtures of known carbon activity relative to graphite. To cover a wide temperature range within the a phase boundaries it is desirable to use as low a carbon concentration as is compatible with reasonable precision. Silica sands, primarily in coarse size ranges, are used to prop open fissures or voids created in the bedrock by hydraulic fracturing. This procedure increases the flow of gas or oil or other fluids through the bedrock. The sands used must meet various specifications relating to their physical and chemical characteristics; these characteristics are in turn related to the geologic provenance of the sand deposit. The Jordan Sandstone, a Cambrian formation which is exposed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, meets the specifications of a proppant sand by virtue of its depositional history and its sedimentary properties.

A number of the pegmatites in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota contain sheet mica; and as the demand increased during World War II the area became an important producer of strategic qualities of mica. During this period of maximum activity, the U. S.. Geological Survey made detailed studies of the geological structural control, the mineralogical associations, and the production Of many pegmatites in the Black Hills. On the basis of results of this study, and at the suggestion of the Geological Survey, several of the pegmatites were examined by the Bureau of Mines, and a few were selected for further investigation. Accordingly, the White Bear, Silver Dollar, Buster Dike, and Hot Shot mines were diamond-core-drilled in 1947. The Hot Shot mine was investigated further by deepening the shaft and crosscutting the pegmatite in 1948. The mica-bearing deposits occur in lenticular intrusions of pegmatite in schists of various mineral composition. Eleven diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,111.4 feet in length, were completed on the four deposits. The shaft on the Hot Shot deposit was deepened 44 feet to the 112-foot level, and crosscuts were driven from the bottom of the shaft to the hanging Wall and foot wall of the pegmatite. This publication briefly describes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits and gives details of the work done by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.

Sorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions by dried biomass of the aquatic plant Potamogeton luscens was studied at laboratory scale. The aquatic plant was collected in water resources in Brazil, washed, dried at 60°C and ground in a bladed mixer. Sorption experiments were conducted in agitated flasks and in a packed bed column. Maximum copper removal was obtained between pH 5.0 and 6.6 when copper was present in the ionic form Cu'. Sorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with saturation attained at 35 mg/g. Free energy of sorption was found, to be of the order of -25 kJ/mol. Sorption kinetics data were better described by a second order reaction and rate constants were calculated in 0.030 1/(min.mg) for - 4.0 mm particles and 0.081 1/(min.mg) for - 0.59 mm particles. Removal of metal ions in a packed bed column showed that Potamogeton luscens biomass can be used in several sorption/dessorption cycles. After sorbent saturation, copper ions can be recovered from the loaded biomass by elution-with H2SO4, solution. Main mechanism responsible for heavy metal uptake was found to be ion exchange. Results are discussed in terms of the surface properties of the biomaterial, solution chemistry of copper ions and thermodynamics parameters.

Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) I. THE CAMAGUEY DEPOSITS. 1. Location. THE Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of San Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name "San Felipe district " is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,1 who says: "The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camaguey City, in the province of Camaguey Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one. WHEN operations were first started at Climax in 1917 by the Climax Molybdenum Co., they were pioneering in the molybdenum industry for little was known relative to the uses of molybdenum or the metallurgy of molybdenite concentration. Concentration of molybdenite is relatively simple today but in 1916, when the Climax deposit first attracted attention, it presented serious difficulties. Little was known, in fact, even about the assaying of such low-grade molybdenum ores. Mine samples were sent to at least a dozen of the best laboratories in the United States and average values reported varied from 0.4 per cent to 1.0 per cent MOS2. Owing to the wide variations in MoS2 content obtained from reliable chemists, the actual value of the ore was most uncertain. This variation occurred repeat¬edly over a period of six months in 1917. It was finally decided, as a last resort, to cut several tons of sample from the tunnel and have a mill test made, using the recovered MoS2 per ton as the grade of the ore, for a small error in the assaying of the concentrate would not materially affect the results. These mill tests were made by the General Engineering Co. (Callow) at Salt Lake City. The results proved an ore of commercial grade and indicated the flotation process for the best metallurgy.
