The hot-working of iron and steel is an art dating back to antiquity, but until about 25 years ago, relatively few alloying elements were used, and these were present only in small percentages. With the exception of sulphur, the amounts of other elements in steels did not markedly affect their hot-workability. The references in the literature on the effect of other elements on the hot-workability of steel are usually reports of failure of these steels in forging or rolling.1-8 With the increased use of alloying elements, and their use in larger amounts, it was observed that many of the new steels were red short in certain critical ranges or at all hot-working temperatures. The stainless steels are particularly difficult to hot-work. The determining of the correct conditions for piercing, rolling and forging of these alloys by experimentation in the mill often results in large losses of these expensive metals. It also is found that the hot-workability limits of many types vary from heat to heat, and hence poor results are obtained on changing to a new heat after a previous one has rolled satisfactorily. To determine the effect on hot-workability of iron to which various elements have been added, it was necessary to devise a method that could be used on small quantities of metal. In such a method, the minimum number of variables should be present, and the procedure should be simple, quick and correlatable with large-scale hot-working operations. Sauveur,9 in the first Henry Marion Howe lecture in 1924, described the effect of carbon on the ductility of steels in torsion near their critical points. He found that carbon increases the plasticity of gamma iron. In the 1930 Campbell Memorial lecture,10 he gives the effect of carbon, chromium, and chromium and nickel on the ductility of steels under 2000°F. in torsion. Ellis11 has studied the malleability of steels at various elevated temperatures by means of a single-blow drop-hammer test. In this test the percentage decrease in height of standard cylinders is taken as a measure of their malleability. He has shown that in the low-alloy steels studied, carbon has a greater effect than nickel, chromium and vanadium. In 1938 the first tests were run on a new quantitative hot-workability test in the laboratories of the Globe Steel Tubes CO. Thum12 mentioned it in 1940. An illustration of the apparatus was published in January 1942.'' The original Radum aggregate plant, built by Henry Kaiser in 1931, is the oldest of the nearly 200 individual operations established by the Kaiser companies. Since that time it has been producing aggregate products primarily for the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, and for many years, this plant has been listed as the Nation's No. One aggregate producer. Early this year a new $10,000,000 facility went on line replacing the old plant. Construction of the facilities was performed under the direction of Kaiser Engineers construction management teams. The existing plant continued to operate without interruption during the entire construction period.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a preliminary investigation to determine the state of stress in crystalline rock outcrops near Atlanta, Ga. The secondary principal stresses in a horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and are 500 to 3,000 psi. The maximum compressive stress is northeast-southwest in the Stone Mountain-Lithonia district but changes to northwest-southeast near Douglasville. The elastic constants were determined from data obtained by static and dynamic laboratory methods and in situ velocity measurements. Results show Young's modulus to be dependent upon both stress level and anisotropy in the rock. Average secant moduli obtained from triaxial tests were used to compute the applied stress from borehole deformation measurements.

The members of the Institute have probably seen in the daily papers notices of the plans of the Secretary of the Navy to. form an Advisory Board to assist the Government to make available the latest inventive genius of the country. Secretary Daniels has appointed Mr. Thomas A. Edison Chairman of this Advisory Board and has officially invited the Institute to secure the selection of two of its members to serve. on this Board. The Secretary in his letter states: "I feel that the work your Institute has done has been such as to give it the right to be in a way officially represented, and the Navy Department desires in this way to testify to its own appreciation of the splendid work for our country that your Institute has done. I have the emphatic approval of Mr. Edison, and he agrees entirely with me that your Institute should he represented in this way and that no better method of getting the kind of men we need could be devised." The invitation of the Secretary of the Navy has been officially accepted and steps have been taken to nominate the two members. Since the Constitution provides for no meeting of the Board of Directors until September, and as Secretary Daniels urged early action, the matter was discussed at a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Institute, at which were present as many members of the Board of Directors as were in New York City at the time. Invitations were also extended to other members of the Institute who happened to be in the vicinity. At this meeting it was decided to submit the matter by a special letter-ballot to the Board of Directors and in doing so to suggest or nominate five members of the Institute, accompanying this nomination with the statement that the Directors might vote for two of the members so nominated or for any other members of the Institute not so nominated. As operações de amostragem de qualquer atividade que necessite de controle de qualidade são fundamentais tanto para fins de garantia da qualidade quanto para efeito comercial dos produtos. Na mineração de ferro não é diferente. Uma amostragem que carregue um vício de 0,20% no teor de Fe (%) pode representar uma perda de faturamento de aproximadamente US$226 mil para cada milhão de toneladas comercializadas aos preços atuais. Para fazer um bom plano de amostragem é necessário conhecer o grau de heterogeneidade ou variação de qualidade (sW) do minério a ser amostrado. Segundo Pierre Maurice Gy, um dos mais renomados especialistas em amostragem de minérios em geral, a forma mais indicada para estimar a sW é o método do variograma. Neste trabalho usamos a metodologia do variograma, com base na Norma Técnica ABNT ISO 3084:2003, para estimar a sW do minério tipo Sinter Feed produzido na Mina de Serra Azul da ArcelorMittal.

A perda de temperatura das barras de aço no intervalo entre a saída do forno e a entrada do laminador é fator determinante no processo de laminação e na qualidade do tubo produzido. O estudo feito tem como objetivo modelar matematicamente o resfriamento destas barras durante o transporte entre o forno e o laminador, permitindo avaliar a temperatura mínima necessária para desenfornamento e também o máximo tempo de transporte sem comprometer o processo de laminação, possibilitando um melhor setup dos equipamentos reduzindo os custos de produção. Os resultados obtidos com o modelo matemático de resfriamento foram comparados com valores reais de temperatura coletados através de campanhas de medições com termopares instalados em uma barra e com medições de pirômetro. Valores de temperatura foram coletados com termopares em barras de 270, 230 e 180 mm de diâmetro. As medições com pirômetros foram feitas em barras de 180 mm de diâmetro. O modelo de resfriamento apresentou para todos os casos erro relativo às medições inferiores a 3%.

Industrial and telecommunications organizations around the world are now turning to optical fibres to satisfy their growing needs for data, voice and video communications and to solve transmission problems in noisy and hazardous environments. Already, coaxial cables have been made obsolete for intermediate and long distance applications and fibres are making in-roads on other copper cable and microwave system techniques.The idea of optical fibres is not new, but techniques to manufacture the high quality cable and components required have only recently been developed. Nonetheless, the technology is now advanced, reliable and mature, and costs are plummeting with increased production and market competition.The mining industry has benefited greatly from developments in electronics and communications over the years. Optical fibres are to have a further significant impact and the time is now right for the industry to begin to exploit the many advantages of this new medium. Applications include data transmission, long distance telecommunications, measurement and control systems, surveillance, computer networks, etc.This paper briefly describes the characteristics of optical fibres, current status of the technology, applications and possibilities for future development.

The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program has been used to evaluate room and pillar retreat mining layouts since it was first released in the mid 1990s. After the Crandall Canyon mine disaster focused attention on the importance of pillar design, ARMPS became an essential component in most Roof Control Plans developed by mine operators. In 2010, NIOSH released ARMPS version 6, which features a ?pressure arch? loading model for deep cover room and pillar mining. NIOSH has also provided general guidance for using ARMPS, including design criteria based on statistical analyses of an extensive case history data base. Many real-world retreat mining scenarios entail mining configurations that ARMPS does not directly address. Some of these situations that the MSHA Roof Control Division (RCD) has encountered in the course of its reviews of more than 100 ?complex and non-typical? plans are ? Unmined pillars are left at the mouth of a retreat panel that function as a ?composite barrier pillar? ? The floor is extracted on retreat, increasing the mining height ? More than one row of bleeder pillars is left in an adjacent, previously mined panel ? A retreat panel is located above or below a gob area in a previously mined seam ? Bleeder pillars are partially extracted on retreat RCD has developed solutions that allow these situations to be fitted into the ARMPS framework, and these are presented in this paper. Also discussed are some of the rules of thumb that have been developed for various input parameters, such as the treatment of inseam rock and slab cuts into solid coal.

Este trabalho visa apresentar os resultados obtidos através de ensaios balísticos realizados em sistemas de blindagem multicamada. Seguindo as especificações da norma americana NIJ 0101.06, foram realizados ensaios utilizando munição de calibre 7,62x 51 mm, que possui velocidade acima de 800 m/s. A blindagem multicamada utilizada possui como camada frontal uma pastilha hexagonal cerâmica (alumina dopada com 4% de nióbia), segunda camada de compósito de matriz poliéster reforçada com tecido de juta e como terceira camada uma placa de alumino 5052 H34. A utilização de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais em substituição às fibras de aramida é de grande interesse, pois além de desempenharem a mesma função no sistema de blindagem, possuem um valor de mercado bem menor. Os resultados de profundidade de indentação na plastilina foram satisfatórios visto que atenderam a norma NIJ 0101.06 e utilizando a técnica de microscopia eletrônica de varredura, verificou-se que o compósito poliéster-juta capturou os fragmentos através do mecanismo de incrustação mecânica.

"In describing the alteration of porphyry systems, the term ""secondary K-feldspar"" appears to be an oversimplification. A better term would be ""alkali feldspar"" alteration, because in actual fact the replacement feldspars show gradational changes from an albite, which is important in some systems, to an alkali feldspar containing minor orthoclase molecule, to true orthoclase.There are several textural varieties of secondary alkali feldspar present in the porphyry systems studied from British Columbia, Australia and New Zealand. These include, in apparent increasing order of alteration intensity: clear albite (An10); patchwork albite (An5-10); chessboard albite (An0-10); ""irregular albite "" (An0Ab100 to Ab90Or10); untwinned ""anoralbite"" (Ab90Or10 – Ab70Or30); and orthoclase (Ab40Or60 - Or100)·The exploration significance of these varieties of alkali feldspar is that their gradation in composition, from sodic to potassic, may be linked to a corresponding increase in intensity of alteration. Thus, there is a tendency for more sodic alteration feldspars to characterize weak, sub-economic deposits, or the fringe zones of stronger deposits; the more potassic alteration feldspars may provide an exploration vector toward more highly mineralized zones."

GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.

"Biodegradation of sodium isopropyl xanthate using two types of bacterial strains, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas putida, is demonstrated. At concentrations higher than 50 mg/L, the presence of xanthate in the growth medium resulted in bacterial toxicity, retarding growth kinetics. Adaptation through serial subculturing in the presence of higher xanthate concentrations resulted in the development of xanthate-tolerant bacterial strains. Stress proteins secreted by bacterial cells grown in the presence of xanthate were isolated. Bacterial cells could utilize xanthate as a growth substrate, degrading xanthate species in the process. Acidic metabolic products generated by bacterial metabolism promoted efficient xanthate decomposition. Probable mechanisms for the biodegradation of isopropyl xanthate are illustrated.IntroductionDifferent types of alkyl xanthates (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl, etc.) have been used as flotation collectors in the concentration of sulfidic ores for several decades. Large quantities of waste water and xanthate-containing effluents are generated by ore flotation processes, posing considerable environmental challenges. Billions of cubic meters of such process waste waters are produced annually across the world, most of which are discharged to the environment, often without any treatment. Leakages and accidental release of xanthate reagents from manufacturing plants and during transportation and storage can also contaminate the environment. Residual concentrations of xanthate reagents are encountered in waste effluent, which are found to be toxic to aquatic life and unfit for human consumption (Harris, 1984; Okibe and Johnson, 2002). Further, direct recycling of such waste waters for plant operations can compromise water quality standards required for process operations. The presence of residual xanthate in recycled waters from flotation plants deleteriously influences flotation processes. Xanthate can be easily decomposed at low pH values; however, CS2, which is more toxic, will be produced by the acidification of neutral and mildly alkaline xanthate-containing solutions. Physico-chemical methods such as flocculation, chemical oxidation and decomposition and physical adsorption used to remove residual collector reagents from mill process waters are often expensive and not environment-friendly (Oliveira and Rubio, 2009; Cheng et al., 2012; Molina et al., 2013,)."

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

Hydrocyclone is a device commonly used in mineral processing industry. Underflow control plays a fundamental role in hydrocyclone operation. This affirmation supports the fact that hydrocyclone underflow has effect in some aspects of separation performance like capacity, split ratio, cut size and bypass. Hydrocyclone operation state is associated to underflow characteristics: air core formation and discharge shape. Many studies attempt to understand size separation phenomenon and the discharge influence but none of them has taken an energy point of view. This work presents the results of a mechanical energy dissipation for hydrocyclone operation from a mechanical energy balance. The experimental results related to Newtonian suspensions show that underflow energy dissipation does not control the operation because this magnitude is small compared to interior energy dissipation. However, discharge energy dissipation provides enough information to describe underflow conditions and its influence in separation conditions. In the modelling non dimensional parameters have been considered for hydrodynamic description and for geometrical and operation hydrocyclone characteristics. Energy dissipation from the continua media approximation results into a relevant concept to understand the hydrocyclone performance and improve industrial installations.

HISTORY shows that the nation which makes the most steel is the most likely to win wars. Today the course of war shows that the nations which get there first with the most steel of the right kind will be the ones to win. Not only the most steel, mind you, but the right kind. Adequate production, which was enough for victory before the days of totally mechanized warfare of 1943, must now be accompanied by still better quality as well as more effective distribution. Further, both production and distribution must be flexible enough to permit rapid shifts from one weapon to another for use in varying elements in varying geographical areas. Thus the problem of making enough steel of the right kind at the right time in the face of changing requirements dictated by experience has been and will remain highly complex. This does riot permit us to ease our restrictions on nonessential use. War is a complex business, like the job of making steel for war. Each time we solve one problem, another pops its head up. Yet we are making some progress.

Reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In this process, quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?(OCH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of quartz does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in the ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the efficiency of iron ore flotation by the use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, Georgia Pacific (GP) clay binder. The GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It also helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating action on iron ions. The results from this study show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing iron recovery to 78.15%, while the concentrate grade remained stable at 67.08%. The level of automation employed in flotation production is relatively low. In an actual concentrator, operators use their judgment to adjust the production state based on the visual characteristics of the flotation froth surface. There are shortcomings, such as strong subjectivity and lagging process operation, that easily cause the waste of manpower and material resources. Machine vision technology is introduced to replace human visualization, achieving a quantitative description of the visual characteristics of the froth surface. The state variable parameters are provided for the identification of the flotation conditions.
