Evaluation of results obtained by the Harris method for inverse pole figures is discussed. Two existing analyses and a new approach are compared. In the most frequently used analysis, different reflections are accorded equal weight. A second method involves area-weighting of reflections, mainly to take account of nonuniformity of Pole distribution. In the new method, reflections are weighted according to their multiplicity factors. Intensity ratios obtained from a sample of steel sheet by the three methods are compared. INVERSE pole figures offer a convenient method of depicting the proportions of material with various orientations referred to a unique specimen axis. The technique was first applied to fiber textures, but it is now frequently used as a description of texture in sheet metal, the unique axis in this case usually being the sheet normal. The Harris method' for the determination of inverse pole figures has the great merit of simplicity. It suffers certain intrinsic limitations, but provided that these are borne in mind, the results allow useful conclusions to be drawn regarding the effects of texture components on certain mechanical properties. Much thought has been given to alternative methods of texture description, aimed at eliminating the ambiguity in the simpler methods.2"6 Refinements in the method of description are obtained at the price of increasing complexity, and it seems clear that a simple method, such as that of Harris, will continue to find application. The original derivation by Harris1 has been corrected by Morris7 and later by Mueller, Chernock, and Beck.2 Since the latter reference is more accessible, it is referred to more frequently than the work of Morris. Most users of the inverse pole figure method present their results on the basis of the treatment by Mueller et al., and it is the purpose of the present communication to comment on this treatment and to suggest a simple modification to the method of presentation which enhances the meaningfulness of the results. This study presents the economics of the hot-carbonate purification process for removing C02. It considers three variations of the process in order to meet the design specifications, which call for a feed-gas flow of 10 million standard cubic feet per hour (std.c.f.h.) with C02 inlet concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 percent and exit C02 values of 5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.1 percent. Experimental data were obtained from two medium-duty diesel engines derated to qualify for use in underground mines. Gaseous and particulate emissions from these engines were measured and results provide information on the effect of exhaust treatment devices on the emissions. The devices in the study were a catalyst, a particulate trap, and an exhaust gas cooler of the water scrubber type. Emission levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were observed to be very low in comparison with emission levels of comparable engines in full-rated operation. Oxides of nitrogen and benzo(a)pyrene content of the exhaust also were found to be somewhat low in comparison with previous findings. For particulate reduction, the combination of a particulate trap and a scrubber was observed to be the most effective combination tried; in some cases, over 60 pct particulate reduction was effected by the trap-scrubber combination.

The target of this study was to clarify the role of lead on the dissolution of gold in the (NH4)2S2O3-Cu leaching system via chronopotentiometry, linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry. It was found that the dissolution of gold was significantly increased with lead concentration up to 10 mg/1 Pb in the system of 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 and 50 mg/1 Cu. \/oltammograms suggested that the anodic dissolution of gold was virtually independent of lead concentration in the range of 1-10 mg/1 in 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 solution while in solutions containing copper as well, addition of lead increased the anodic dissolution of gold.

Synthetic fibers have been used for many years to attend the demands required by the technologica lfields. However, the use of them has been questioned due to the impact on the environment. In this way, the natural fibers have received extensive attention, in particular hybrid fabrics of natural fibers to reinforce environmentally friendly polymer matrix composites. Thus, the present work has the objective of evaluating and comparing the mechanical properties of composites formed by hybrid fabric with 70% Malva—30% Jute in epoxy polymer matrix. The tests carried out are the Charpy and Izod Impact Tests, with specimens of 10, 20 and 30% in volume of hybrid fabric environmentally friendly into polymer matrix composites at room temperature. The 30% samples had the best results, functioning as an efficient reinforcement.

"Manganese is mainly consumed by steel and battery industries. In recent years, it is essential to utilize the low-grade manganese oxide ores with total manganese grade below 25%, as the high quality manganese ore resources are becoming scarce with the rapid development of the steel industry. Conventional pyro-metallurgical processes for utilizing manganese oxide ores are characterized by high production cost and energy consumption, low productivity, serious environmental pollution, etc. In this study, reduction thermodynamic of MnO2 reduced by sulfur was firstly carried out. Then, a novel process of reduction roasting with sulfur followed by acid leaching was developed to recover manganese from the very low-grade manganese oxide ores. Effects of main factors, including temperature, reduction time and S/Mn mole ratio, were investigated, and a high leaching efficiency of Mn above 95% was obtained under optimal conditions.IntroductionHigh/middle-grade manganese oxide ores are generally used in the metallurgical industries, particularly in steel plants and ferro-alloy units. The consumption of metal manganese in the ferro-alloy industry accounts for 85- 90% of the total Mn demanded [1]. Therefore, high quality manganese ore resources are becoming scarce with the rapid development of steel industry. It is essential to make good use of large quantity of low-grade manganese ores (TMn < 25%) presently available."

"We analyzed two copper and lead flotation concentrates from the LaRonde mill using MLA technology (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) to identify the contaminants and to quantify their size and liberation. The MLA mineral quantification was compared with traditional mineralogical techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Chemistry). The accuracy of MLA data was then quantify in application to metallurgical decision (mineral identification, mineral quantification, particle sizing and liberation quantification). We prepared five well-known materials from pure minerals and analysed them by MLA. MLA concentrates analyses showed the lead concentrate is mainly contaminated by pyrite and sphalerite. These minerals are liberated above 70 % and present a floatable size around 15 to 35 µm. Surface activation by dissolved lead from galena is therefore assumed for these contaminants. The analyses of the known samples show that mineral quantification and size distribution given by the MLA are consistent with the chemical analyses and the laser particle sizer. The liberation measurement is affected by the stereological effect. Modelling quantifies the overestimation of the particle liberation. Based on the modelling, the stereological shift on liberation should not impact metallurgical conclusions on the concentrate contaminations.INTRODUCTIONTo face the diversity of mineral processing challenges, the process mineralogy includes phase quantification, measurement of mineral size, liberation by exposure and by grade, association, surface contact proportion and texture. In the last decades, two SEM commercial tools emerged: MLA and QEMSCAN R. Both are based on specific combinations of backscattered electrons and X-ray images as well as image analysis routines developed at CANMET (Petruk & Pinard, 1976, Petruk, 1989), CSIRO (Frost, O'Hara, Suddaby, Grant, Reid, Wilson & Zuiderwyk, 1977, Reid, Gottlieb, MacDonald, & Miller, 1984) and JKMRC (Hall, 1977, Gu & Sugden, 1995). Recently, TIMA (TESCAN) and Mineralogic MiningR (ZEISS) supplied automated mineralogy for mining industry (Bouzahzah, Benzaazoua, Graham & Cropp, 2015, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015a). In parallel, home-made routine were developped to resolve mineralogy challenges in mineral process but also in geometallurgy and mining environment (Kahn, Mano, & Tassinari, 2002, Knight, Klassen & Hunt, 2002, Mermillod-Blondin, Benzaazoua, Kongolo, de Donato, Bussiere & Marion, 2011, Hunt & Bradshaw, 2015). [The Bureau of Mines well-bore caliper was designed to provide an instrument that could be operated through 2-inch tubing, which &apos;a used particularly in many input wells on water-flooding projects of eastern, Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. It should find wide application elsewhere under many other conditions where it has not been possible previously to make caliper logs with the larger probes used on other instruments. The caliper has three additional advantages over other instruments of this type: (1) It measures 4 radii (up to 18 inches) 90° apart with an accuracy of ± 1/4 inch; (2) the measuring arms can be opened and closed at will by remote control; and (3) it is run and operated on a single-conductor, armored electric cable (Amergraph, type 1-H-0). The caliper probe is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length. The electrical control and measuring circuits are encased in a stainless-steel tubular case. Measuring arms, made of 5/16-inch aluminum tubing, are attached near the lower end of the instrument. Distances the arms are extended are indicated t the surface by a meter calibrated to read directly in inches. Depths at which the radii measurements are taken are indicated by a wireline depth indicator on the cable-reeling. The instrument is not affected by pressure or temperature, it can be run open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. This paper describes and illustrates the instrument and outlines the operating procedures. A bibliography at the end of the report gives references to articles and patents on the development and use of other well-bore calipers.]

Abstract-The acid rock drainage (ARD) buffering capacity of mine waste is governed by its bulk chemical composition and its mineral assemblage. Conventional acid base accounting (ABA) tests can be used to predict short-term buffering, but should be used with caution to model or predict the long-term ARD buffering capacity of mine waste. ABA data for mine waste samples from four different deposit types: anorthosite-hosted magmatic sulfide nickel, dunite-hosted magmatic sulfide nickel, porphyry copper-gold, and volcanic-hosted high sulfidation epithermal silver, were compared with whole-rock geochemical and petrographic data obtained from the same samples. Our objective was to devise and test a method of predicting ARD buffering capacity based on bulk chemistry and modal mineralogy. In other words, we developed a quantitative theoretical method for calculating neutralizing potential, relying on easily obtainable and relatively inexpensive whole-rock and sulfur XRF analyses, which could substitute for conventional ABA procedures in situations where these procedures are either too costly or too time consuming. For each deposit type, models were devised that reasonably approximate the net neutralization potential estimated by the ABA data obtained from laboratory tests. Once an appropriate model has been developed and tested, portable X-ray fluorescence equipment, already used for grade control at many mine sites, could provide the wholerock and sulfur analyses required to estimate the ARD potential of the waste material. Although this approach is not intended as a substitute for the legally mandated ABA test procedure, it could facilitate the timely and cost-effective management and mitigation of ARD at a mine site.

Uma superliga a base de Níquel, popularmente conhecida como Inconel 625®, foi estudada no presente trabalho. A Soldagem por Fricção e Mistura Mecânica (SFMM) aplicada a liga 625 foi realizada com velocidades de rotação da ferramenta entre 1200 a 200 rpm e velocidade de soldagem entre 1 e 1,5mm/s. O aporte térmico foi calculado como função dos parâmetros de soldagem empregados. Adicionalmente, análises metalográficas e de microdureza foram realizadas na seção transversal das juntas soldadas. A aplicação da soldagem no estado sólido foi efetiva e resultou em maiores valores de microdureza todas as juntas soldadas. Por outro lado, um aumento na velocidade de rotação causou um aumento do aporte térmico.

There are many scales of innovation in the pursuit of concentrator performance improvement, including paradigm change, inventive change and incremental change. All are important, but the last is low risk, low cost and has a relatively high probability of success, given the right metallurgical skills. Seeking continuous improvement is also essential to ensure that performance does not decline over time due to ore type changes, personnel changes, equipment wear and other factors. When properly implemented, these small gains offer a very high rate of return for the project cost because they are made from marginal, not total, operating costs of the plant. To be effective this approach requires plant trials that use designed structure and appropriate statistics to test the observed differences arising from the old and new process treatments, be they a change in flotation reagent, in grind, pulp density, etc. However the pursuit of small but financially significant performance gains is often regarded as fruitless because of the range of variance in plant data, and the consequent difficulty of ‘proving’ that a benefit has been achieved. Opportunity for improvement is thus sometimes relegated to the realm of the impossible, or at best, treated with skepticism. Operations managers prefer to look for the larger gains, which are easier to demonstrate and prove. Unfortunately, these are seldom to be found; rather, a large gain can be more easily made by executing a series of small recovery improvements that are together equivalent to the ephemeral single large gain. In this paper we advocate a policy of continuing improvement driven by rigorous performance testing protocols and a formal ‘risk analysis’ approach to judging the efficacy of changes implemented in the plant. Following these simple procedures allows rational decisions to be made on the basis of quantifying risk and reward. In particular we consider the choice of hurdle rate for decision-making which best balances risk and reward. It is shown through case studies from actual industrial practice that this approach is practical and delivers significant financial value to the operation.

Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources&apos; Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. As ligas do sistema Cu-Al-Ni sofrem Transformações Martensíticas Reversíveis (TMR) e podem apresentar Efeitos Não Elásticos, incluindo o Efeito de Memória de Forma (EMF). Elas podem ser utilizadas nas diversas áreas e são promissoras para substituir ligas do sistema Ni-Ti. Neste trabalho foram estudadas três ligas distintas: monocristalina e policristalina Cu-Al-Ni e policristalina Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti, dando atenção a análise da estrutura e comportamento mecânico, em seu estado inicial e após tratamento de betatização. Nas três ligas foram identificadas as fases martensitas ß1 e Y1e as fases R e ß1. A liga Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti ainda apresentou o composto Cu2AlTi. Durante a deformação, as três ligas sofreram TMR, induzidas por tensão, com reorientação das fases envolvidas. O tratamento de betatização aumentou a plasticidade, sendo mais notável na liga policristalina Cu-Al-Ni. A liga Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti se mostrou como a mais frágil, sofrendo a fratura antes de alcançar 10% de deformação. A liga monocristalina se mostrou a mais promissora para realizar EMF, revelando maior deformação armazenada no patamar de pseudoescoamento.

To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.

Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

Vertical micropiles are generally considered to be low in lateral resistance. Therefore, battered micropiles are often used when additional lateral load carrying capacity is required. However, battering of micropiles can sometimes be restricted due to existing adjacent structures or utilities, especially in highly urbanized areas. For example, presented in this paper are lateral load test data from a 43-story building project in New York City where vertical micropiles were used due to proximity to adjacent structures. Three static lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles consisting of 13.375-in-outside diameter and 25- to 51-ft-long casings, and socketed 10 to 12.6 ft into the bedrock (gneissic schist). The subsurface profile above the bedrock consists of loose to very dense, mostly sandy and silty soils. The design load for the three test piles was 14,000 lb and the maximum load applied during the tests was 200% of the design load. Lateral load- displacement behavior of the free pile heads from the load tests are compared with the results of p-y analyses based on a widely used p-y method for sandy soils and using a lower and an upper bound estimates of soil index properties and strength parameters. Since the existing p-y curves were formulated for larger diameter driven piles at a specific geographic location, major differences are observed between the results of the load tests and the p-y analyses. In general, the lateral displacements estimated based on the p-y analyses using upper bound soil parameters are relatively closer to the results of the field load testing. Modified p-y curves specific to the sandy and silty soils representative of the general subsurface conditions of New York City matched with the lateral load tests are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Micropiles generally are limited in lateral load carrying capacities due to their relatively higher slenderness ratios (ratio of depth to diameter) compared to more conventional deep foundation alternatives, such as driven piles and drilled shafts. So, micropiles are not typically considered as deep foundation solutions when significantly high lateral loads are expected on the substructures. Various means to increase the lateral resistance of micropiles include battering and installing an oversized casing in the top portion of the piles (FHWA 2005; and Richard and Rothbauer 2004). However, it is often not possible to install micropiles in a battered position in highly urbanized areas due to existing adjacent structures or utilities. Installation of oversized casing is often restricted by limited space availability and concerns of losing lateral capacities due to closely spaced group of piles. Thus, estimation of lateral resistance of vertical micropiles can become highly important for geotechnical engineering projects in urban areas when a small to moderate amount of lateral resistances are expected from the substructures, often to withstand seismic and wind loads.

Neste contexto, este trabalho visa avaliar a utilização de moinha de carvão vegetal na mistura de carvões reduzindo a necessidade da importação de carvões minerais, mantendo a qualidade requerida pelo Alto Forno, além de desenvolver uma rota para minimizar a emissão de CO2 proveniente do processo de obtenção de ferro gusa em Altos Fornos a coque, reduzindo seu impacto ambiental. Foram realizados testes em escala piloto com até 20% de moinha de carvão vegetal. Os resultados das análises realizadas no coque mostraram a viabilidade técnica e comercial para utilização em até 2% na carga.
