This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

An experimental procedure was developed for studying magnetic roasting on a accurately-controlled laboratory scale. The loss-in-weight method was used and the course of reduction could be followed under a reducing gas atmosphere containing as many as five different components. Some important variables of the operation were checked on a marginal Mesabi iron ore containing porous and dense varieties of hematite as well as pure goethite. The conditions simulated were those for the grate roasting of a coarsely-sized ore burden. Temperature was maintained at 600°C; gas composition at 4.25% CO, 4.25% H2, 17.0% CO2, 15.0% H20, and 59.5% N2,, and gas flow rate at about 1,5 lineal feet per minute. The ore charge was composed of quarter-inch cubes. Under these conditions, the ore porosity was found to be one of the governing variables of the operation. Results showed that an ore size limitation existed as a function of this ore porosity. For efficient magnetic conversion, the size limit was 3/8 inch for very porous ores and about 65 mesh for very dense ores. An anomaly was noted in the weight losses incurred during actual magnetic conversion. For goethitic ores, these were generally about 13 per cent higher than could be accounted for theoretically. The effect was attributed to possible non-stoichiometric structures forming during the reduction process.

A mill model structure based on the population mass balance framework incorporating breakage characteristics, slurry and solids transport, product classification and discharge and energy consumption was reported in XXVII IMPC and named the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version I (GTMMS I). In this work, a new 4D (four dimensional) appearance function sub-model based on the experimental results of the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JK RBT) was developed to describe the breakage characteristics and was applied to this new model structure. The newly developed 4D appearance function model has fewer fitting parameters and is more generic in nature. Most importantly, it is applicable to both high and low energy impact breakage. It is therefore much more versatile in comparison to the existing JKMRC t10- tn appearance function and the size-dependent JK M-p-q t10-tn appearance function. In addition, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) energy distribution model was integrated into the new model structure. With DEM results providing energy distribution information inside the mill directly, the selection function and the back-calculation method used in the existing JKSimMet modelling method are not needed in this model structure. With the above two revolutionary innovations, the previous model structure was upgraded to the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version II (GTMMS II). Furthermore, the new model structure is dynamic in nature with time-stepping technique for non-steady-state simulation. A case of the dynamic grinding of a SAG mill was studied to validate the GTMMS II. The model simulation results agreed well with the plant data. With the newly developed 4D appearance function model, the incorporation of DEM energy distribution and transport function, the GTMMS II is an important step forward towards mechanistic modelling of tumbling mills.

O projeto incluiu o sistema exclusivo da Metso, SmartTag™, para rastrear o minério dos furos de desmonte na mina até a planta concentradora com o objetivo de correlacionar os tipos de minério e de desmonte com os resultados de desempenho da planta. O sistema de modelamento geometalúrgico automatizado chamado GeoMetso™ utiliza a tecnologia de rastreamento de minério SmartTag™ para coletar continuamente dados de desempenho da planta e atualizar automaticamente os modelos preditivos e o modelo de blocos em tempo real. Este sistema é a base para a implementação, validação e melhoria contínua das estratégias integradas e otimizadas de operação, além de auxiliar na reconciliação da mina-à-planta e planejamento de lavra.

Devido à possibilidade de se remover quantidades muito pequenas de material de cada vez, a ablação seletiva por laser tem se mostrado um método muito eficaz para remoção de finas camadas de materiais depositados sobre um substrato. Neste trabalho, um laser de femtossegundo foi utilizado para remoção de um filme fino de nitreto de titânio (TiN) depositado sobre um substrato de carboneto de tungstênio (WC), configuração comum em pastilhas de usinagem mecânica, objetivando fornecer um método eficiente para tal processo. Os limiares de ablação do filme e do substrato foram determinados, evidenciando a problemática do trabalho, remover um filme com limiar maior que o substrato. Um sistema de controle de espectrometria de emissão atômica induzida por laser (LIBS) foi testada, com a intenção de controlar em tempo real, a espécie do material ablacionado, mostrando-se muito eficiente. Os parâmetros do laser bem como da varredura de usinagem ainda estão sendo testados para definir a viabilidade do processo.

This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressuriztion Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

MSHA is the regulatory Agency which administers the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act. Although MSHA's principles largely derive from this Act, they do not exculsively derive from it. One might expect that our principles are contained in the regulations we have published to implement the Act. To a degree, this is true; but the regulations we have now were developed and published before the current Act became effective. For this reason, as well as others, there are some principles that we support which are not evident in our regulations, or in the Act. One of these is the ALARA principle. This principle requires that all unnecessary exposure be avoided; that is, all exposures should be kept "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." Almost all professionals in radiation control can agree with this broad principle; but it would be difficult to get agreement on a regulation which would translate the principle into industry practice. Rather, our regulations specify a limit to exposure for any individual. For radon daughters the current limit is four working level months per year. By having an explicit limit such as this, the ALARA principle often becomes lost and the limit becomes the goal. The principles contained in the Act are equally broad in scope. The principles apply not only for radiation protection, but also for toxic substances and harmful physical agents. The Act states that standards for such substances or agents shall most adequately assure on the basis of the best available evidence that no miner will suffer material impairment of health or functional capacity, even if such miner has regular exposure to the hazards dealt with for the period of his working life. The Act also provides that, although protection of health must be our foremost concern, other considerations shall be the latest scientific data in the field and the feasibility of the standards. Our regulations reflected similar principles when they were developed and promulgated. From experience with other health and safety laws, Congress realized that setting and meeting an exposure limit may not be sufficient to prevent disease. The Act, therefore, contains a detailed description of additional provisions to be included, where appropriate, in mandatory safety and health standards. One of these additional provisions requires that miners be informed about the nature of the hazards associated with their job and about the means for their own protection. Another provision requires the use of labels and other forms of warning to inform miners about the hazards, about proper precautions for safe use or exposure, about relevant symptoms of overexposure, and about emergency treatment. We have partially implemented these provisions through regulation. The Act requires also that standards shall prescribe protective equipment and control of technological procedures and that they shall provide for the monitoring of miners' exposures. We have implemented this provision to a degree also through regulation. Finally, the Act specifies that, where appropriate, a mandatory standard must prescribe the type and frequency of medical examinations in order to most effectively determine whether the health of miners is adversely affected by exposure. Additionally, when a determination is made that a miner may suffer material impairment of health or functional capacity by reason of exposure, that miner must be removed from such exposure and reassigned. In order to encourage miners to take the medical examination, the Act also provides that the miner shall not suffer loss of pay as a result of being reassigned. This additional provision on medical examinations has not been implemented by regulation for radiation hazards, nor for most other toxic substances or hazardous physical agents. We believe that this conference will provide us with valuable information on medical examinations for radiation exposure, as well as on other considerations to be used in future regulations. We still question whether our basic exposure standard of four working level months per year is adequate to protect a miner's health. This conference is indeed timely because both MSHA and NIOSH have been reviewing this issue for some time. I would like to reemphasize MSHA's commitment to education and training. MSHA strongly believes that miners should be informed fully about the real and potential hazards associated with their work. They should know the nature of the hazard and the means for protecting themselves from the hazard. The Act also emphasizes the need for training miners by requiring that new miners receive 40 hours of training before working underground and 24 hours of training before working on the surface. The Act also requires eight hours of refresher training annually. This training must include information on the relevant health hazards and the potential consequences of overexposure. Before I close, I would like to mention briefly another source of principles that MSHA often consults to obtain guidance for both the development and enforcement of regulations. These are the various court decisions that are handed down from time to time. Two in particular that I want to stress are the recent Supreme Court Decisions on benzene and cotton dust. Although neither of the decisions has a direct impact on mining or radiation, they do clarify some general principles and directions for regulatory agencies, such as the role of cost-benefit analysis and the need for risk assessment. In closing, I wish us all an open exchange of information for a productive and useful conference.

Dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate produces a sulfur layer on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface that interferes with further dissolution. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of these types of diffusion-controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder that scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be operated continuously at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology and eliminates sulfur dioxide emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 900 C with the chalcopyrite-ferric sulfate system resulted in copper extraction exceeding 99 pct. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW· hjst, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. The pregnant liquor was clarified and tested for typical solvent-extraction recovery of the copper. Two-stage extraction and two-stage stripping recovered 96 pct of the copper in an electrolyte suitable for copper electrowinning.

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

CaCO3 thermal decomposition produces CO2 and CaO, and CO2 can be used as a weak oxidant in vanadium extraction. CaO will also affect the vanadium extraction process. This experiment, taking self-blowing and temperature acquisition experiment system, through adding different quality CaCO3, studies the molten iron in the oxidation behavior of C, V and P and its impact, and analysis of CaCO3 decomposition of the heating effect of the molten pool. The result indicates that adding CaCO3 in the vanadium extraction process had no obvious effect on the oxidation of carbon, but partly increased vanadium oxidation which reached more than 90%. Increased CaCO3 additions also increased cooling the molten pool, with a maximum decrease in temperature of 20 K. In addition, the oxidation of P also increased, reaching 40%. The research has proved that CaCO3 can serve to oxidize V and P is effective in vanadium extraction.

O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em estudar o perfil térmico da carcaça metálica inferior do Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA) durante o processo de produção de aço, sugerindo adição de aletas na geometria a fim de obter maior troca de calor e diminuição na temperatura de trabalho da carcaça metálica inferior do FEA. Assim, analisou-se a influência do ciclo térmico do processo por meio de acompanhamento termográfico e simulações computacionais via Método de Elementos Finitos. Posto isto, as modificações propostas, depois de testadas e analisadas por meio de um acompanhamento termográfico, denotaram eficiência de tal maneira que resultou em uma diminuição de aproximadamente 60ºC da temperatura na carcaça metálica inferior do FEA.

THE coal-fields of Missouri, situated hi the northern and western portion of the State, are distributed, in whole or in part, over 57 counties, embracing an area estimated by Mr. Broad-head to be practically 23,000 sq. miles, including small detached beds and outliers in St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties in the eastern part of the State. This area includes about 8,000 sq. miles of Upper or Barren Measures, 2,000 sq. miles of exposed Middle, and 12,420 sq. miles of exposed Lower Measures. In a general way, the Missouri coal-field is bounded on the east by an imaginary line entering the northern part of the State just east of the 92c1 Meridian and passing across the State in a southwesterly direction to a point on the Kansas-Missouri line a little below the southern boundary of Barton county. An important part of the field overlaps this line and extends down the northern side of the Missouri river, under¬lying the greater part of Randolph, Howard, Boone and Audrain counties. In all, 34 counties produced coal during the year 1903. Fig. 1 shows the position of the coal-fields in Missouri. GEOLOGICAL FEATURES. The Coal Measure formations, all of the Carboniferous age, rest unconformably upon the rocks of the sub-Carboniferous or Mississippian series, and, in some cases, upon the rocks of the Devonian and Silurian ages. Introduction Loading and hauling systems are evaluated in open pit mining for new properties, expanding existing operations, changing systems or equipment, and equipment replacement analysis. The objective of such evaluations is to determine the equipment needed to handle planned tonnages at the lowest cash flow cost. Cash flow costs are used to combine capital outlays with operating and maintenance costs. Leasing costs could be substituted for capital costs with appropriate modifications to calculation procedures. These modifications will not be covered. This chapter will describe methods of evaluating loading and hauling systems, concentrating on some of the more often raised questions concerning quantitative data. While the methods described are not the only ones in current use, they have a record of proven reliability. The shovel and haulage truck system is used In the examples because of its common use in open pit mines. In medium to large open pit mines, electric shovels and diesel-electric drive haulage trucks are normally used. The basic ideas presented in this chapter apply to all loading and hauling systems, with appropriate modifications. The process of performing a shovel and haulage truck evaluation can be time-consuming and tedious because of the quantity of data involved, but it is not particularly difficult. The examples used to Illustrate shovel and haulage truck evaluation are based on a hypothetical open pit mine operating 350 days per year producing 31 750- 000 t (35,000,000 st, 100,000 stpd) annually, of which 11 110 000 t ( 12,250,000 st, 35,000 stpd) are ore. Selection of the optimum shovel and haulage truck fleets will be shown. The principal sources of data for the examples or any other equipment evaluation are equipment manufacturers and actual operations. Whenever possible, actual operating experience should be used to verify estimates. The quantitative data presented herein are unrelated to a specific existing mining operation.

"Shaft bottom structural systems are used in underground mining to support transfer of personnel, equipment and ore to and from underground to the surface. This paper first summarizes the evolution of design philosophy from a concrete tower supported on a concrete plug to the current structural steel design arrangement with unlined shaft walls, clear shaft bottom area with only a concrete housekeeping pad. Then the paper reviews the design parameters, analysis and design, and construction methodology for this rather unique shaft bottom structural system consisting of three sets of hitch beams, with each having specific functional requirements. INTRODUCTION Shaft bottom structural systems are used throughout the world in underground mining operations to provide a means to support the transfer of personnel, equipment, materials, ore and waste entering and exiting a vertical shaft ready for transport to and from the surface via the hoisting system. The shaft bottom structural system, for the Service Shaft (SS) at the Jansen Mine, is designed to accommodate two skips, a personnel/equipment cage, counterweight, services, loading pocket, rope changing, arrestor system, crash (or catch) beams, access platforms, stairs and rope divider system. Stantec and BHP have engineered a unique structural steel shaft bottom system for hoisting system at a Potash Mine. The shaft bottom structural system connects to a fixed guide and cantilever bunton system, used in the vertical shaft (shaft barrel), above the shaft bottom. The geometry for the shaft bottom structural system, shown in Figure 1 a), features three sets of hitch beams, beams which span across the shaft excavation or barrel. At the top of the structural system are two upper hitch beams. These hitch beams support a 64 metre suspended rectangular braced tower (upper tower), complete with steel guides for the conveyances. The upper tower passes through the main station (potash or mining) level and then connects to the top of the arrestor (lower) tower structure via a sliding vertical connection. The potash level is supported by two hitch beams spanning the shaft and loading pocket excavations. The arrestor tower, a braced compression tower structure, is carried by a third set of hitch beams. Below the third set of hitch beams is a short suspended tower complete with access platforms, stairs and the rope divider system."

The objective of the investigation was to determine spectrochemically 19 elements in the general range of 0.5 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity hafnium and its compounds . Samples were converted thermally to hafnium dioxide , mixed with buffer - carrier - internal standards , and excited by a dc arc . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates . Transmittance values were recorded densitometrically and converted to relative - intensity ratios . Four groups of standards were used to establish analytical curves from which the concentrations of impurities were obtained . Average precision of the method was 14.2 percent relative standard deviation , and relative error was 4.2 percent .

In most instances, the application of high-chrome grinding media results in an increase in the recovery of the valuable mineral(s). The authors have published data from a number of plant-based case studies, which indicate that it is not unreasonable to expect a recovery increase in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for a copper ore. It is of interest to understand where the increase in recovery is coming from. That is, is the additional copper recovery the result of improved fine particle flotation or is it due to an improvement across all size fractions?This paper aims to answer this question. Laboratory flotation tests were completed using forged steel and a high-chrome alloy on a volcanogenic massive sulfide copper ore. The unsized data indicated that the application of high-chrome grinding media to this ore resulted in an improvement in both copper recovery and copper concentrate grade. A detailed kinetic analysis of both the copper sulfide and gangue minerals was completed that clearly shows that the change to a more inert grinding media produced significant increases in the flotation rate constants (both fast and slow) across all size fractions. It is also possible to observe that the change in pulp chemistry has resulted in a decrease in the flotation kinetics of the -20 micron pyrite, while the coarse pyrite recoveries have increased, presumably because of an increase in the flotation of the chalcopyrite/pyrite composite particles.CITATION:Greet, C J, Jacques, S and Kinal, J, 2014. A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. This apparent convergence point is called the convergence pressure and is a characteristic of the system involved. Various empirical correlations of K-values have been noted.
