The energy situation the world faced during the decade of the Seventies resulted in actions throughout the free world to reduce its dependence on OPEC oil. Many nations heeded the indicators early in that decade and commenced efforts to reduce their oil requirements. Those nations which did not heed these warnings had the message brought to them more emphatically in the last portion of the decade with the further rapid and continuing rise in prices of OPEC oil. Furthermore, the demonstrated unstable nature of large oil-producing countries has made it clear to all free world nations that their energy demands of the future must be provided for by some more stable and assured supply. Now, early in the decade of the Eighties, we see the need for expanded use of coal as an energy supply to be essential. The result in 1980 and 1981 has been a great increase in demand for steam coal worldwide. In essence, a new business for the United States has developed in steam coal export. In the United States, the large growth in foreign demand for our steam coal is now well recognized and documented. A major impediment in meeting this growing demand became abundantly clear in 1980. This impediment is the congestion existing at U.S. coal export ports. With the recognition of this constraint, a plethora of activity has been observed in announcements for alleviating the problem by improving and expanding current export port facilities. In addition to improvement and expansion, an abundance of totally new facilities has been announced in an effort to find ways to meet this large demand in the new business of steam coal export. This is needed; and hopefully, many of these plans will be translated into action. While total implementation of all stated plans is not expected, much of the implementation depends upon large- scale dredging, large waterside ground storage sites, and improved handling equipments in the conventional type of export ports. The time and capital required for implementation is great, and environmental problems associated with dredging are substantial. Host significantly, and unfortunately, implementation that does include dredging our ports will still not permit use of the truly large colliers of 140,000 DWT and greater, which are evolving as the "state of the art" in long-distance sea transport.

"The Lonmin Base Metal Refinery treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode as well as a concentrate containing the platinum group (PGM) metals. The original process employed a Sherritt design and utilizes atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals. This paper describes the original flow sheet and the improvements made to enhance PGM recoveries, product quality and to increase capacity. Changes include the introduction of flash recycle cooling on the autoclave, batch leaches to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate and the implementation of solid-liquid separation with centrifuges. INTRODUCTIONThe Lonmin Base Metal Refinery (BMR) is about 100 km north-west of Johannesburg and treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a concentrate containing the PGMs. The plant was commissioned in 1985 based on a Sherritt design to treat 12 tonnes converter matte per day. The original flow sheet consists of a milling circuit, an atmospheric leach and a pressure leach to produce a PGM concentrate which is despatched by helicopter to the Lonmin Platinum refinery in Brakpan, about 40 km east of Johannesburg. The liquor from the atmospheric leach is treated by crystallization to produce a nickel sulphate hexa-hydrate crystal. The leach liquor from the pressure leach is treated by a selenium removal step followed by electro-winning to produce copper cathode. The spent solution from the copper electro-winning is recycled to both the atmospheric and pressure leach steps to provide sulphuric acid for the leaching reactions.Modifications were made to the original circuit to increase the plant capacity, to improve the PGM recoveries and to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate. Capacity increases included all the unit operations, new mill, new first stage, additional autoclaves, additional nickel sulphate crystallizers, new copper electro-winning and new batch leach reactors for upgrading the PGM concentrate. The current circuit is described in this paper and not the detailed history of each plant change."

O fósforo é um elemento crítico para a qualidade dos aços, tornando a redução dos teores desse elemento uma exigência para a indústria siderúrgica. Uma forma de se medir a eficiência da desfosforação é através do coeficiente de partição do fósforo (Lp=%P(escória)/%P(aço)). O objetivo principal deste trabalho é avaliar escórias de um forno elétrico a arco através da comparação entre o Lp real com o Lp calculado por simulação termodinâmica, avaliando, também, o comportamento da partição de fósforo com relação à composição química. A partir de dados de composição química de amostras de escória e aço de uma usina siderúrgica, foram feitas simulações termodinâmicas utilizando o software FactSage. Com base nesses resultados, concluiu-se que o cálculo computacional através do software descreve bem o comportamento termodinâmico, mas tende a superestimar o Lp, provavelmente por questões cinéticas e/ou de transferência de massa e calor.

Morris-Shea, an Alabama-based deep foundation contractor, is installing foundation piles at the sites of North America's two largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals currently under construction. The contractor has crews working at Venture Global's LNG lique- faction plant in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, as well as constructing foundations for the Cheniere Energy Stage 3 Liquefaction Project in Corpus Christi, Texas. This work includes installing ap- proximately 27,000 DeWaal drilled, full displacement, cast-in-place concrete piles to support seven new midscale LNG trains at Cheniere's Texas ter- minal. Deep foundation installation began at Venture Global's Plaquemines facility, located approximately 30 mi (50 km) south of New Orleans, with an initial phase of 24,000 piles. Plans for the Plaquemines LNG terminal include three loading berths on the Mississippi River and four LNG containment tanks. The facility will utilize new pretreatment com- pressors, liquefaction trains and on- site gas turbine power plants to maintain an annual LNG export capacity of nearly 20 million tons (18 million tonnes) per annum. The site's LNG trains are configured in 18 blocks. The contractor is installing piles through an initial 6-20 ft (1.8-6 m) of cement mixed improved soils, which provide a safe work plat- form for equipment to operate on the extremely weak native soils. Drilling continues through soft clay in the subsurface and tips into a stiff clay or dense sand layer. Production piles are drilled to depths up to 124 ft (38 m) below ground surface. The firm is working with engi- neering, procurement and construction contractor KZJV, a Kellogg Brown & Root and Zachry joint venture, at the Louisi- ana location. The foundation team mobilized at the Plaquemines site in May 2022, to install 16, 18 and 24 in (400, 450 and 600 mm) diameter test piles to depths of 90 and 120 ft (27 and 36 m). The piling contractor returned in September 2022, to start Phase 1 of the deep foundation project, beginning installation of production piles.

A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 - 400 my) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 - 10-3M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and C12TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a 2 - 3 fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and, nickel powders but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite. The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most ore monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. The results are interpreted in terms of molecular associations and synergistic action of xanthates and quaternary amines.

The Robbins Mobile Miner demonstrates the successful combination of hard rock excavation technology and the latest electronic control technology. The mobile miner, a partial face hard rock tunneling machine, features a fully integrated control system relying on a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This PLC controls all functions: tramming, steering, boom swing, cutting depth, conveyor operation, air scrubbers, hopper loading and unloading, etc. The machine is fully instrumented allowing the PLC to monitor the results of all commands on a continuous basis, to record data, to evaluate developing problems, or to shut the machine down if necessary. The paper describes the development of the Robbins - Pasminco automated mobile miner and early testing at Pasminco Mining's Broken Hill Southern Operations, New South Wales, Australia.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

When the paper "Operations at the Greenvale Nickel Project Mine and Refinery" was delivered at the 1st International Laterite Symposium in February 1979, the Yabulu Caron plant had been operating for four years and production had just stabilized. The design had been based closely on the Caron plant at Nicaro, Cuba, built in 1944, also by Freeport. Yabulu had 10 Herreshoff ore roasters and production in 1978 was 18,682 tonne nickel as impure oxide sinter and 763 tonne cobalt in a mixed sulphide with a cobalt to nickel ratio of 1 :2.5. In the 25 years since the 1st Symposium, two more roasters have been added, but dry ore processing rate has remained relatively unchanged at 2.4M Uyr to allow a lower feed rate per roaster with associated higher recovery. The ore source has changed from the domestic Greenvale mine to imports from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Nickel production between 1978 and 2003 has risen by 67%, cobalt has risen by 146% and the products have changed to high purity nickel compacts and "ChemGrade" cobalt salt. A combined ion - exchange X- ray spectrographic method was developed and evaluated for determining trace amounts of cobalt and nickel in high - purity tungsten and tungsten trioxide . The sensitivity for both cobalt and nickel is in the range from 0.2 to 0.5 μg ( 0.04 to 0.1 ppm , based on 5 gram samples ) . Accuracy at the 5 to 20 μg level is ±10 percent of the amount present . This report describes the development, theory, and application of techniques and instruments for quantitatively determining nickel, vanadium, and iron in oils, using direct, X-ray emission spectrographic methods (5, 6).3 The methods developed apply to petroleum and other oils as well as some specific fractions of oils. The quantities of nickel, vanadium, and iron in various petroleums are of practical and theoretical interest. Even traces of nickel and vanadium may poison cracking catalysts, and X-ray methods have been used for determining nickel in such catalysts (7). At least parts of the nickel and vanadium occur as metal-porphyrin complexes, a fact which may have considerable bearing on knowledge of the origin of petroleum.

"The Virginia Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to construct the Craney Island Eastward Expansion (CIEE) to meet the dual purpose of extending the life of Craney Island as a dredged material management area and providing land for a state-of-the-art marine terminal. The over 500-acre (200-hectare) expansion provides additional upland dredged material capacity for the Hampton Roads Harbor by constructing perimeter dikes, that once filled, will provide land for the development of a container terminal. In the winter of 2010/2011 the first stage of sand fill was placed, followed by the installation of approximately 12 million linear feet (MLF) (3.6 million linear meters, MLM) of marine PVDs. With over 36 MLF (10.9 MLM) of PVD required to complete dike construction the project will be one of the largest PVD installation project in the U.S.This paper details the challenges associated with the construction of the cross dikes, in particular the design, testing, installation and monitoring of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) installed overwater to depths of over 130 feet (40 meters) for foundation improvement in the insitu very soft Norfolk Clay. With expected settlements of 20–30 ft (7-10 m) and 30 percent average strains, the discharge capacity of the PVDs was of particular concern. Laboratory data is presented showing the magnitudes and variability of discharge capacity under different confining pressures in both a straight and buckled condition.The method of installation and monitoring of the marine PVDs in open water included developing a specialized barge and sophisticated positioning and data collection system to verify installation location, depth of penetration and track quantities. An observational method, including material testing, detailed surveys, periodic in-situ testing, and instrumentation, was utilized by the project team to assess the project’s progress and allow for validation of consolidation and strength gain rates and magnitudes."

The mineral asbestos, because of its unique fibrous character, is allied to cotton and wool but has the advantage of heat and fire resistance; therefore, it supplies many industrial needs for which no substitutes are yet available. This report covers the essential features of the asbestos industry, including occurrence, production, mining, milling, utilization, international trade, and marketing. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products, but domestic sources furnish only a small fraction of the raw material required. As the United States is dependent to so great an extent on foreign supplies of raw materials, the bulletin deals at length with the asbestos industry in foreign lands. Several reports now available deal with the industry in individual countries. Among them are Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, by J. G. Ross; Asbestos in the Union of South Africa, by A. L. Hall; and a series of articles on the Russian industry, by Walter A. Ru Keyser. These have been drawn upon freely, and full acknowledgment is hereby made for the helpful information thus secured. The file of the magazine Asbestos also has furnished many valuable data touching all phases of the industry. Many other books and articles listed in the bibliography at the end of this bulletin have been utilized and have been supplemented by the author's intimate acquaintance with the industry for about 20 years. The intent is to present a concise, world-wide, historical, technical, and economic treatment of the asbestos industry.

The winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district presents few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend, in no small measure, the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sum of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.l The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless due to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proved beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to be exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, and it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

"Automated information systems are being developed very rapidly in Europe. In France, Belgium and West Germany, more than 70% of the coal production is controlled by these installations. Information on both product ion and the mine environment is produced. For example, at one mine in France the system records the operating times of the compressors and of the refrigeration pumps, counts the number of coal cars passing the unloading point, and controls the principal conveyors and the loading /unloading of the storage bins. In addition, the ventilation air velocity, the methane content and the carbon monoxide content in the return air entry are recorded; an alarm is triggered and the current to the conveyors cut when the gas content exceeds a critical level. The recorded information is used at four levels: (1) for immediate action, (2) for daily reports, (3) for monthly reports and (4) for long-term studies. For example, when any conveyor is stopped for more than 10 minutes, the system controller immediately telephones to learn of the reason. At the end of a shift, the load factor of the conveyors is computed; then monthly an analysis of the causes of low load factors is made. The presentation describes in detail the system that has been installed in more than 20 mines in France."

THE Cornwall Ore Mines, Division of the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Cornwall, Lebanon County, consists of two separate magnetite ore bodies, approximately one mile apart. The one ore body was an outcrop in which open-pit mining operations were begun in 1742 and continued without interruption. This mine is also served by a shaft for mining that portion of the ore body not recoverable by open-pit methods. The other property had no outcropping and is entirely an underground operation. This mine, cap-tioned No. 4 mine, is serviced by two shafts 220 ft apart. The No. 4 shaft is for hoisting rock and ore, and the No. 5 shaft is for handling men and ma- terials. The shafts are on a catenary curve, closely following the dip of the ore body. Slope of the shafts at the collar is 36", flattening to 26" at the bottom. The footwall at Cornwall is a traprock which varies structurally from solid to highly fractured. Grizzly stations at the top of each chute raise were reinforced by setting timber sills on concrete. Occasionally it was necessary to concrete the entire chute raise. Concreting was done by using 35-yd electric mixers set up in the breaking subs. Sand, stone, and cement were hoisted up through the chute raises to the breaking subs. Late in 1937 it was decided to eliminate chute raises and breaking subs in future development. Haulage levels are 50 ft apart vertically. When ore is below a 40 " dip, slushing drifts are driven normal to the haulages and on 40-ft centers. In a few areas, ore dips greater than 40" and slushing drifts are then placed parallel to the haulage drifts. Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.
