The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. Discussion of the paper of CHARLES T. MALCOLMSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 271 to 289. E. W. PARKER, Washington, D. C.-The briquet or boulet, or coalette (whatever name is used) has come to stay as a part of the fuel supply, particularly for domestic purposes. During the past winter I have had some personal experience with the use of boulets made from anthracite coal. All of this winter I have used boulets in my furnacee and in my grate at my home in Washington. One reason for doing so is that we get the boulets at a price considerably cheaper than the prepared sizes of anthracite coal. The fuel has proved entirely satisfactory. One advantage possessed by the boulet is its absolutely uniform size, which makes the ventilation of the firebed practically perfect. The boulets burn until entirely consumed. There is not, even in an open grate fire, if the fire is kept constantly going, any unconsumed fuel passing through the grate bars. The boulets hold their form until entirely consumed and then break away into a clean white ash, with absolutely no clinker. That in itself is a particularly favorable recommendation to the housekeeper. Mr. Malcolmson has mentioned the fact that notwithstanding the smokeless character of anthracite, the boulets made from it emit smoke. The emission of smoke is due to the coal-tar pitch used as a binder. This is particularly noticeable if the fireman is somewhat careless, or wants to save labor, and feeds too much of the fuel on the fire at one time, cooling it down and thus causing an unnecessary amount of smoke. The smoke lasts but a short time, however, and if the fire is fed a little more frequently, with a small quantity of fuel at one time, the smoke is reduced to a minimum. I believe it will not be long before some of our engineers will have overcome the objectionable smoke; and will produce either from anthracite or from the so-called smokeless New River and Pocahontas semi-bituminous coals, a briquet which will be as smokeless as anthracite for all. practical purposes.

Technological developments in Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing and improvements in both hardware and software have allowed fiber optic sensing systems to be deployed in a variety of applications such as pipeline leak detection, perimeter security monitoring, and power cable real time thermal rating. Recently, there has been a larger adoption of monitoring of conveyor belts in so called Conveyor Health Monitiring Systems (CHMS) within the mining and bulk material handling industries to identify idler conditions on an ongoing basis. Several attempts have been made to institute sensing capabilities into conveyors with mixed success. However, recent breakthroughs in modeling, installation methodology, and technology, as well as increased understanding of application and industry requirements, have allowed the technology to be deployed at both experimental and commercial scales. This paper summarizes the application conditions and requirements, design considerations, methodologies used, the outcomes achieved, the logistical and field considerations, and the future possibilities of the use of this technology in CHMS using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing.

[This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of specified French possessions in Africa has been prepared from the best information available in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. France controls large areas on the African continent, but the various Colonies and Dependencies are administered more or less independently. Algeria is under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior, and its mining laws are essentially the same as those of the mother country. Tunis and Morocco are attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; separate digests of the mining laws' of these respective colonies have already been prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The present paper covers all other French territory on the continent of Africa except Somaliland, a rather small Colony including the port of Djibouti near the point where the Red Sea joins the Gulf of Aden. Available information indicates that the prospects of mineral production in this Colony, apart from salt and gypsum, are not at all encouraging.3]

"The copper concentrate used in this study is produced by flotation of a black shale organic rich ore. This resource is a carbonate-rich, polymineral concentrate. In the last 5-6 years, ore characteristics changed and the concentrate grades degraded. This study evaluated bioleaching of the concentrate in stirred tank reactors as an alternative to the pyrometallurgical technology that is currently applied, and which may no longer be feasible in future given the concentrate chemistry.The first part of the study focused on testing non-traditional operating conditions during continuous bioleaching experiments: high solids concentration (> 20% solids), reduced agitation and aeration rates. For the same residence time, bioleaching performance at high solids loading (25%) was the same as that reached during previous bioleaching experiments at 15% solids. No mixing or microbial issues were encountered. The bacterial consortium used in the experiments demonstrated a high copper tolerance.The second part of the study was devoted to technology development for metal recovery from copper bearing solutions obtained during bioleaching experiments. Due to the high copper concentration of the leachate, solvent extraction prior to electrowinning was not necessary. After iron removal, high quality copper cathodes (morphology and composition) were obtained from the PLS by electrowinning."

"Drilling through the Guayabal shales, a gray calcareous shale, and the C1 to C100 formations, a well-cemented calcareous-sandstone in Corralillo field, Mexico, is a challenge due to severe wellbore instability problems. Additionally, there has been a history of ineffective reservoir stimulations by hydraulic fracturing. To predict and mitigate these subsurface issues, it is essential to characterize the mechanical properties and rocks strength for a better prediction of borehole stresses and collapse pressure during drilling. Various correlations can be used to estimate and/or determine the unconfined compressive strength but most of them are based on transit time and porosity.In this study, grain size distribution was combined with acoustic travel time, porosity and static Young’s modulus to develop a rock strength prediction model for the turbiditic sandstones of the Chicontepec basin. The main reason this combination of parameters was employed was because of the wide variations in rock strength estimated using traditional porosity-based correlations such as the McNally’s (1987), GMI-Jizba-E’s and Bradford’s (Bradford et al., 1987).To develop a new correlation, a geomechanical and microstructural campaign was initiated. Mineralogy by X-ray diffraction, pore and grain sizes by petrography, clay distribution by SEM and porosity by mercury intrusion porosimetry were measured. Static and dynamic Young’s moduli and Poisson’s ratios were acquired by triaxial and ultrasonic measurements on undisturbed sandstone samples from the Chicontepec basin. More than ten offset wells with wireline data, including transit time, porosity, density, resistivity and gamma ray, were used for reservoir and geomechanical characterizations.Our analyses lead us to propose a new correlation for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of sandstones of the Chicontepec Basin as a function of transit time and grain diameter, both of which can be derived independently from destructive laboratory tests. Our results also highlight the importance and value adding of a combined approach incorporating grain size analysis in the rock strength prediction. The UCS predicted using the transit-time and grain-size-based model presents a median value (P50) of 76 MPa, P10 of 55 MPa and P90 of 89 MPa."

By 1980, the free world's need for economic sources of energy is expected to double. As a result, there will be a tremendous potential for all energy sources working together to supply the demand. For coal to continue its dominant role as a low-cost energy source, means must be found for it to meet the challenge of nuclear power and to overcome obstacles placed on its use by air and water pollution regulations. As the more limited reserves of gas and oil diminish, economic ways are also required for converting coal to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels, and to chemicals, thus resulting in optimum utility of the most abundant low-cost fuel resource. The means for accomplishing these ends can only come about by a vigorous research and development program. Successful efforts by industry and government working together, both in America and abroad, will assure the continued use of coal to meet the world's energy demands. This paper discusses the emerging patterns of energy sources throughout the world and the role that research and development on coal will play in supplying future energy requirements.

The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district; Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C. The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907. As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes totaling 2,500 linear feet were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses 205 core samples were made. Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.

How do you fit a processing plant underground with minimal change to mine infrastructure and yet maintain economic recovery, operability and maintainability? By combining fine crushing, continuous-gravity recovery and flotation. A modular, transportable processing plant has been designed that is capable of being installed in underground drives/drifts or on the surface. The Python processing plants have been designed to treat 20 or 50 tons per hour of ore to a particle size of approximately 500 µm and recover gold and sulfides into the concentrate. The plant is only three meters wide (including bolt-on platforms) and can be installed on a 1:50 slope, making for very simple installation. Test work carried out by Gekko Systems Pty. Ltd. has indicated that up to 50% of ores tested to date would achieve gold recovery rates of over 90% using this method. The projected benefits of this strategy are numerous and include low overall capital and operating cost, significantly less power consumption compared with traditional milling circuits and low environmental footprint.

"This paper deals with the recovery of the tungsten and vanadium from spent SCR catalyst leach liquors by different hydrometallurgical methods. The first part consists of pressure leaching of spent SCR catalyst using caustic soda followed by metal recovery by liquid-liquid extraction. In a leaching process, the following experimental parameters were tested and optimized: NaOH, particle size of feedstock, temperature, and solid to liquid ratio. The optimum condition for leaching of tungsten and vanadium was under the following conditions: NaOH 3 mol/L, temperature 250°C, particle size <300 µm, and solid to liquid ratio 0.4. From these optimum conditions in this experiment, the dissolution efficiency of vanadium and tungsten was 91.5and 87%, respectively. Liquid-liquid extraction following commercial extractants were tested: TBP, Cyanex 272, D2EHPA, Aliquat 336, Primeme JM-T, Alamine 308, Alamine 304-1, and methyl-tri-octyl-ammonium chloride. The conditions for both valuable metal recoveries were optimized.INTRODUCTIONSelective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst has become the most effective to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from stationary segments such as power plants and waste incinerations around the world due to the reinforcing regulatory trend and emerging environmental issues (Forzatti, 2001; Spivey, 2002; Li et al., 2011).Currently, the most widely used SCR catalyst is V2O5-WO3/TiO2 system due to its great catalytic properties (Li et al., 2011; Marshneva et al., 1995; Marbergeret al., 2015). In general, the composition of the SCR catalyst used in the stationary application is 0.5 to 1 wt% of V2O5and 7 to 10 wt% of WO3(Marberger et al., 2015; Chen &Yang, 1992, Vuurman et al., 1991; Alemany et al., 1991). Currently spent SCR catalysts are treated as waste and disposed of in landfills. This causes a lot of waste of secondary resources of vanadium and tungsten. In terms of industrial value of vanadium and tungsten (Gupta &Mukherjee, 1990; Moskalyk &Alfantazi, 2003) and reduction of pollutant emissions, it should not be disregarded for their recovery for their material recycling from spent SCR catalyst. However, investigations for recovery of metal values from spent SCR catalyst has been rarely carried out."

"A selective chlorination process using cuprous chloride (CuCl) was investigated for producing high-grade chalcocite (Cu2S) from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) feed. The chalcopyrite feed was reacted with CuCl in the presence or absence of sulfur (S) at temperatures between 900 and 1,100 K for five hours under an argon gas atmosphere. The experimental results indicate that iron (Fe) was selectively removed from the chalcopyrite feed as ferrous chloride (FeCl2) at 1,100K and the mass percentage of Fe thus decreased from 31.5 percent in the feed to less than 0.05 percent in the residue, under certain conditions. As a result, high-grade Cu2S was obtained from chalcopyrite in a single step. This new selective chlorination of chalcopyrite using CuCl as a chlorinating agent is therefore feasible for producing high-grade Cu2S.IntroductionCurrently, blister copper (Cu) is commercially produced from sulfide ores by pyrometallurgical methods. These methods entail matte smelting and converting, with the removal of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) as slag — mainly Fe2SiO4 — and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas, respectively.In the pyrometallurgical method, as shown in Fig. 1 (Schlesinger et al., 2011), Fe is removed through two steps at high temperatures of around 1,500 K to reduce the loss of Cu during slag formation. However, the slag still contains 1 to 8 percent Cu. Therefore, Cu in the slag is recovered by slag treatment processes, after which the concentration of Cu in the slag decreases to around 0.4 to 1.3 percent. Although Cu is recovered, the slag that had undergone the treatment processes is difficult to use as a feedstock for ironmaking owing to the small amount of Cu remaining in the slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011).In addition, large amounts of SO2 gas are generated by the oxidation of S in the current Cu production process. The SO2 gas generated is captured and used to produce sulfuric acid (H2SO4). However, despite the development of SO2 gas-capture technologies, the emission of SO2 gas is still a problem in terms of environmental considerations.Several studies had been carried out in the past to overcome the drawbacks of the current process. The extraction of Cu from sulfide ores using a chlorination process is one alternative that had been investigated by several researchers. Most chlorination processes used chlorine gas (Cl2) as a chlorinating agent at temperatures between 573 and 1,023 K under an inert atmosphere (Donaldson and Kershner, 1962; Olsen et al., 1973; Kumar, Li and Warren, 1985, 1987; Kanari et al., 1999; Kanari, Gaballah and Allain, 2001)."

In the dropping zone of blast furnace (BF), primary slag absorbing ash of pulverized coal and coke become to be intermediate slag. Due to viscosity and surface tension of slag and the pore between cokes, some slag remained in coke layer and affected the permeability of blast furnace. The flow behavior of slag with different basicity (0.55–1.10) and Al/Si (0.35–0.50) were studied. Meanwhile, the viscosity and surface tension of slag were calculated. The results showed that, with the increasing basicity of slag, surface tension increased and viscosity decreased. With the Al/Si increase, surface tension and viscosity increased. The smallest pore that all slag can pass through was 4.5 mm. However, the height between slag droplets and the bottom of crucible indicated that the ability of slag to pass through pore were weakened with the increasing basicity and Al/Si. Thus, slag which absorbed ash from fuel become difficult to pass through coke layer.

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

Significant progress has been made over the past few years on characterizing and understanding the hydrodynamic properties of frothers and collectors and their effect on flotation performance. This new understanding of the relationship between chemistry and hydrodynamics has dramatic implications for how flotation circuits should be controlled and optimized. Previous work has shown that choosing a frother of the right &apos;strength&apos; is critical to the optimization process, and the work and discussion presented here serve to strengthen the argument. In addition, we know that collector chemistry may also influence hydrodynamic properties and needs to be taken into consideration. To achieve the desired outcome, the overall system of reagents and operating parameters must be considered. This paper describes and discusses some of the findings from recent research on frother and collector chemistry effects (on hydrodynamics), and how this knowledge can be used to improve flotation performance. Examples from plant experience are discussed.

One of the most significant advances in Mineral Processing in recent years, is the development of the selective flocculation technology. The technology is primarily aimed at recovering the mineral values from ultrafine ore suspensions. This is achieved by selectively aggregating the mineral particles in question to such size as to enable their effective separation from the suspension. Selective flocculation utilizes the differences in the physical-chemical properties of the various mineral components in the mixed suspension. It is based on the preferential ad- sorption of an organic flocculant on the particular solids to be flocculated, leaving the remainder of the particles in suspension. In order to understand the mechanics of this process, selective flocculation may be divided into four major sub processes; these being: ore slurry dispersion, in which all the particles are stably and uniformly distributed in the suspension with the individual particles being essentially separate; flocculant selective adsorption and floc formation; floc conditioning, which aims at obtaining flocs with desire properties for their subsequent separation and with minimum entrapment of dispersed particles; and floc separation from the suspension. These sub processes will be reviewed later in this article.

Natural gas is a general term applied to the gas obtained from oil or gas wells. It is the most widely used of all gaseous fuels. The principal disadvantage in the use of this and other gaseous fuels is the difficulty encountered in the storage and transportation of large quantities in the gas state. Handling in the liquid state is possible, but reduced temperatures are required since methane (table 1) is the principal component of most natural gases that are used as fuels. Actually, liquid storage has been utilized both here and abroad;3 however, the Cleveland disaster4 has pointed out the need for a critical evaluation of the hazards involved in the storage of this cryogenic fuel. Accordingly, a program was undertaken to obtain basic data that could be used to assess these hazards. In this report, the factors to be considered in an evaluation of the fire and explosion hazards associated with any fuel are each discussed briefly. These factors are then used to assist in the design of experiments for the evaluation of the hazards associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) relative to those associated with other common fuels. Experiments have been conducted on the vaporization of LNG, the mixing of LNG vapors with air, the effect of temperature and nitrogen dilution on the limits of flammability of methane in air, the burning rates of LNG and other fuels, flame radiation, and extinguishment of fires above liquid pools. Based on the results of these experiments, LNG can be stored safely in suitably designed above-ground tanks surrounded by earthen dikes in much the same manner as gasoline.

Also described are the history of the shale-oil industry, the geology and size of oil-shale resources; and conventional mining methods and processing technology.

"Asbestos Corporation Limited, incorporated in 1925, operates four asbestos mines and three asbestos mills in the Thetford Mines 1•egion of Quebec's Eastern Townships. A unique asbestos orebody, located in the Ungava Peninsula of Nouveau Quebec, was purchased by Asbestos Corporation Limited in 1964 and commenced production in 1972. As there were no existing facilities in the isolated, arctic region of Asbestos Hill, it was necessary for Asbestos Corporation Limited to construct at Deception Bay a deepsea wharf, a large ungraded fibre shed, a power plant and camp facilities. Forty-two miles of road were needed and were constructed from Deception Bay to Asbestos Hill. At Asbestos Hill, a complete crushing-drying-milling complex, a power plant, pe1•sonnel accommodations and open-pit facilities were provided. Unloading facilities and a fib1•e finishing mill we1l constructed at Nordenham, West Germany. The ""Asbestos Hill- Nordenham Story” is divided into individual papers covering all aspects of the engineering, construction and operation of this unique enterprise. Particular emphasis has been placed on those unusual aspects caused by the isolated location, arctic conditions, short shipping season and the deep permafrost."

Copper production in the. United States in 1972 amounted to 1,658,000 tons according to the USBM. This figure is up over 1971 but falls below 1970 production of 1,719,101 tons. This report is essentially about the status of copper mining operations in the U.S. and is an update and expansion of the report "Southwest Copper-A Position Survey" published in [A=], October 1965. At that time, the trend was toward using larger equipment to mine lower grade ore and toward the expansion of dump leaching practice. That trend continues today but, it is overlain by intensive activity to comply with existing environ¬mental legislation and uncertainty over proposed revisions of venerable laws governing mining. In the U.S. today there is, practically speaking, no excess smelting capacity so that expansion of copper production through the startup of new mines is inhibited. Owners of a large undeveloped orebody would have to decide before going into production whether to sell the concentrates offshore, which has many problems, whether to try one of several unproved chemical processes for producing refined metal from concentrates or embarking on the construction of a traditional pyrometallurgical plant in the face of considerable uncertainty over the pollution standards that eventually must be met. The situation is such that not only is the present rate of U.S. copper production threatened but the ability to meet projected increased demand in the years ahead may have been severely retarded.

"A computer model was constructed for bacterial leaching of the major sulfides found in porphyry deposits, including bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, covellite, cubanite, enargite, native copper, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The model incorporates equations for the sulfide minerals dispersed in the rock matrix. Leaching occurs by reactions with ferric ion diffusing into the rock fragment: Ferrous ion is resenerated to ferric with oxygen by bacteria at a temperature dependent rate. The model keeps track of the net acid generated, oxygen consumed by the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ion, heat generated, jarosite and hematite precipitated, and copper leached. The model was used to predict the rate of copper recovery, heat generation and oxygen demand for a variety of run-of-mine sized porphyry ores. These results were used in the design of a ventilation system and the economic analysis of a modified in situ extraction method that may be cost competitive with conventional copper production involving open pit mining.IntroductionA study was undertaken at the University of Utah to evaluate the technological and economic feasibility of mining copper by a method referred to as Flood Drain Leach Cell (FDLC) mining. Cells 60 by 75 meters in plan and 70 meters in height are created throughout the ore body by a modified Vertical Retreat Mining technique that includes the removal of 25% swell material. The swell material is leached in finger dumps on the surface while the cells underground are bulkheaded, flooded, drained, and artificially aerated to promote bacterial ferric sulfate leaching.
