Hibbing Taconite Company is located by the cities of Hibbing and chisholm near the center of the Mesabi Range, approximately 169 km (105 miles) from the Canadian Border. The plant site is equidistant from these two communities, about 6.4 km (4 miles) from each. A 169 km (105 mile) railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where the pellet production is loaded into lake carriers for lower lakes destinations. Immediately to the south of the mine area is the world famous Hull- Rust-Mahoning Mine which produced more than 700 000 000 million tons of red ore between the years 1893 and 1973.

The geochemical interpretation of results of statistical analysis of published multi-element stream sediment data from southwest and northern New Brunswick is presented. Element concentrations in southwest New Brunswick are low and comparable to element concentrations in background areas in northern New Brunswick. Deposits of copper and nickel are indicated in southwest New Brunswick. Anomalous element concentrations occur in several areas in northern New Brunswick and the elements most commonly associated with these anomalies are Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag; and also Mo, Wand Sb. Bedrock geology greatly influences element concentrations and may cause false anomalies. Manganese has a pronounced effect on the dispersion patterns of Co and also Zn, Mo, Pb, As, Ba and Ni. Nickel and Cr are strongly sympathetically related and this association is independent of bedrock type.

Observations at temperature are used to investigate the phase changes in alloys containing more than 50 pct Co and above 1000°C. The nonsuppressible transformations in cobalt above 1120°C and in the intermetallic compound Co2Cr3 are studied. The liquidus and solidus surfaces are determined. Insufficient data is obtained to complete the constitution diagram. A REVIEW of some of the earlier work on cobalt' and on the binary systems with chromium2-4 and with molybdenum,5 showed that one likely source of differences might be attributed to the presence of phases at high temperatures which could not be retained by quenching. Consequently, the decision was made that only methods of examination at temperature should be used in this work. The correctness of this decision was confirmed during the course of the work by the investigation of the martensitic nature of the transformation in cobalt- and by the decomposition of the high temperature form of the phase Co2Cr3 on quenching.' The use of high temperature methods, including dilatometry and thermal etching led to the postula-tion of the existence of a high temperature form of cobalt with a probable hexagonal close-packed structure, transforming from cubic cobalt over a range of temperature from 1119° to 1145°C.8 One of the important pieces of evidence for this transformation was that it was observed in alloys with chromium and molybdenum which were nonmagnetic at this temperature so that confusion with magnetostriction effects was impossible. These results were not reported in this earlier paper, so that the data given here supply further evidence for the existence of a second allotropic transformation in cobalt. High temperature observations are necessarily much slower in producing results than the examination of quenched specimens at room temperature by conventional means such as X-ray diffraction or microexamination. The investigation has only covered a limited part of the field, as a result, extending from the liquidus down to about 1050°C and from the cobalt corner up to 50 pct alloying elements. The differences between the various reported diagrams for the constitution of the Co-Mo and Co-Cr systems have already been mentioned. The best available diagram in the first system is due to Sykes and Graff' which is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows the latest Co-Cr diagram due to Elsea, Westerman, and Manning.' A comparison reveals that these are incompatible because of the disagreement with regard to the number of allotropes of cobalt. Elsea, Westerman and Manning took their liquidus and solidus curves from Wever and Haschimoto.2 The temperature horizontal in the two-phase field beneath the eutectic was placed 35" to 39°C higher than in earlier work2,4 with a new interpretation of the nature of this transformation. This interpretation also required a peritectic horizontal at about 1470°C, which has been confirmed here for an alloy with 53 pct Cr. No investigation had been made of the ternary system until after this work had been terminated, when a section at 1200°C was published." In this work a ternary compound was found by the X-ray diffraction examination of quenched alloys. This compound contained less than 50 pct Co, and was thus outside the field investigated here. "IntroductionIn the past decade, metallurgical and mining companies have shown an increased interest in the licensing of technology. When licensing technology, it is usually to the benefit of the parties, to have at least some of the technology to be licensed protected by a patent.This paper is intended to bridge the gap between the engineer in the field of mining, metallurgy and mineral processing who is interested in exploiting an invention commercially, and the patent agent or intellectual property lawyer whom he/she might retain to prepare a patent application and then prosecute the application to obtain a granted patent. It is also intended to encourage the inventor or a small business concern to consider the value of patents in the sale and licensing of technology. The lawyer may subsequently advise and assist the inventor in licensing his/her invention.A brief outline of some of the basic features of the patent system follows. The nature of the information, which the patent professional requires from the inventor to enable him/her to draft a patent application, will also be considered in general terms. Furthermore, various types of licenses which may be drawn up between a licensor of specific technical information and a licensee, will be listed and briefly discussed. No attempt, however, will be made to give a comprehensive and detailed account of the above aspects; the interested reader should consult legal publication and reference books, and patent professionals for further specific information.A granted patent is a document which describes an invention and how to practise it. The claims of the granted patent, figuratively speaking, fence off the intellectual property the inventor regards as his invention. The Commissioner of Patents, representing the Government, grants to the inventor or his assignee the exclusive right of making, constructing and using the invention, and selling it to others to be used, for a limited period of time, in exchange for disclosing the invention to the public. Thus, a patent prevents others from practising the claimed invention but it does not, necessarily, bestow the right to the patentee to practise his own invention. The term of a patent now in Canada and in most of the developed countries of the world, is 20 years from the date of filing the patent application. In the United States the patent term is still 17 years from the date of issuance of the patent. In Canada, the term was changed to 20 years in the new Canadian Patent Act which came into force on October 2, 1989. Any patent application filed prior to that date or granted before it, retains a 17 year life, commencing at the time of grant."

"The various elements of longwall mine design are reviewed, particularly as they apply to condition s in the coalfields of the Plains region of Alberta. The following recommendations are made: (1) optimum panel lengths of 1000 to 2000 metres; (2) face lengths of 100 to 150 metres; (3) the use of retreat methods; (4) the restriction of floor undulations to less than 15 degrees. IntroductionThis article considers the elements of longwall mine design and is part of a short study that has been made of the feasibility of longwall mining in the Plains region, Alberta, Canada. The Plains region, with about 20 million tonnes, accounts for more than 80% of the coal resources of Alberta. The coalbearing strata in the Plains region cover an area of about 95,000 square miles. The geological formations dip very gently toward the southwest and, from a mining point of view, may be considered horizontal. The depth of the coal seams varies from several metres to over 650 metres. However, it is not anticipated that underground mining will be extended beyond the depth range of 25 to 250 metre s.The coal seams in the Plains region have been subject to many small mining operations in the past. The majority of these small mines were limited to a depth of about 50 metres, working mainly by room-and-pillar methods, although hand-filled longwall mining was often used.The development of new underground mining operations in the Plains region will have to be on a 'start-from-scratch' basis, especially regarding the installation of equipment. Longwall mining is more mechanized than any other method of mining and requires careful attention for the selection of new and expensive equipment. There have been many proven longwall advance and retreat systems in Europe and North America; mining conditions in the Plains region are more similar to those in the United States. Therefore, it will be essential for new mining pro jects in the Plains region to commence with proven system s and equipment; in time, perhaps an experimentation process could be attempted as experience is gained.Generally, the coal face is the key factor in mine productivity, which depends a great deal on equipment reliability, training and experience of the operators. The original design of coal faces must be flexible enough to cater for potential improvements so that running time can be increased."

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone; such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments using bench-scale apparatus to explore the effect of large changes in process variables on the yield and composition of the gases produced by passing 800° C steam through a fixed bed of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal. The total yield of combustible gases increased throughout the given range for the following variables: Superficial steam velocity increasing from 0.02 to 0.12 fps, pressure increasing from 1,000 to 6,000 psig, residence time increasing from 0 to 60 minutes, and temperature increasing from 800° to 900° C; however, a greater increase in the yield of hydrogen in comparison with the increase in yield of methane reduced the gross heating value of the gas to around 470 Btu per scf at conditions giving the maximum yield. Pressures of 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000 psig at 0.09 fps steam velocity, 800° C, and 60 minutes residence time, respectively, produced methane yields of 20, 24, and 22 percent, based on maf coal, with the gross heating value of the CO2-free gas decreasing from 552 to 520 and to 470 Btu per scf. Methane concentrations in the CO2-free gas were 26, 22, and 14 percent, respectively. Based on the gross heating value of the coal, the percentage of the heating value recovered in the gas was 60, 71, and 87 percent, respectively. The use of tungsten sulfide as a catalyst for converting carbon oxides and hydrogen into methane was explored briefly using both a sulfur-free gas rich in methane and a sulfur-bearing synthesis gas (3H2:1CO).

"Exploration drill core provides for a number of standard measurements essential for determining the viability of a new mine or the extension of an existing one. Rock lithology and alteration can be visually determined and grade measured from the half core. Geotechnical parameters such as rock strength and structure can also be measured. Using suitable proxies, these metrics can then be used to estimate run-of-mine (ROM) particle size. In combination with comminution test results, these can subsequently be used to design comminution circuit configurations and estimate their performance.The Frieda River Project drill core for the large Horse-Ivaal-Trukai copper-gold porphyry deposit was unusual due to a late stage gypsum-anhydrite stockwork event that overprinted much of the deposit. Above the base of the oxidised zone, which closely matches the water table, gypsum and anhydrite has been leached out, effectively removing the glue holding the rock mass together. As a result, much of the rock above this gypsum-anhydrite surface is fragmented and gravel-like in texture, while the material below this horizon is typically uniform and competent.Large volumes of the orebody above the gypsum-anhydrite surface are expected to need minimal or no blasting for efficient excavation. In addition, the fragmented nature of much of the material was expected to reduce comminution specific energy as it already appears as though it has been crushed. While this was expected to have positive impacts to the operation, the lack of standard geological logging methods available to accurately define the degree of in situ fragmentation led to difficulty in gaining certainty over the ROM product and grinding circuit feed size distributions.Using the extensive library of core photos for the project, a novel method using image analysis techniques to take both the intact core and gravel into account to predict ROM fragmentation was developed. In addition, existing point load test data was used to infer the strength of the rock and its impact on the blasting, crushing and grinding processes. The novel approach allowed development of ROM size distribution data and improved certainty in the results of comminution circuit designs.This paper describes the methodology undertaken in detail, and discusses the results obtained.CITATION:Bennett, D and La Rosa, D, 2016. Green leaf tissues convert solar energy into the energy of chemical bonds of sugar molecules during the process of photosynthesis. The efficiency of this conversion can be much higher than efficiency of any of the currently known silicon-based solar panels. Importantly, vast amounts of CO2 are assimilated during this process. The efficiency of photosynthesis is critically dependent on the availability of a large number of nutrients, among which metal cations such as K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Ni play a key role. In this paper I summarize basic requirements and major functions for each of these essential nutrients in plant photosynthesis, both at the whole-plant and molecular level. I will talk about how these requirements may be affected by the global climate trends and discuss the prospects of creating artificial photosynthetic “bioreactors” for efficient energy conversion and CO2 assimilation.

Introduction Research concerning all phases of hoisting practice, but more particularly the causes and prevention of hoisting rope deterioration and the improvement of safety dogs 158 for shaft conveyances, has been carried on intensively for the past three years in the Province of Ontario. Prior to the hoisting accident at the Paymaster mine on February 2nd, 1945, there had been no fatalities in the Province due to a hoisting rope failure. It was probably on this account that little original research on hoisting problems had been undertaken here and that the mining industry had been content to look to British, South African, and United States investigators for new developments in this field. Except for the Paymaster accident this might still be the case since, in any industry, it is apparently necessary for a serious accident to occur before any extensive programme of preventive research is launched. When this accident occurred, the Government of Ontario, with the close co-operation of the Paymaster officials and the mining industry as a whole, took immediate steps to determine the cause. A five-man, non-industry committee, selected from the Faculty of the University of Toronto with Dean C. R. Young as Chairman, was appointed by the Government, and a three-man Committee consisting of R. D. Parker, General Superintendent of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, R. L. Healy, General Manager of Wright Hargreaves Mines, Limited, and R. E. Dye, General Manager of Dome Mines, Limited, with the latter acting as Chairman, was appointed by the Ontario Mining Association.

Melbourne Water Corporation, through the Pipelines Alliance, has commenced construction of a new drainage pipeline to provide additional flood protection within the Sandgate Avenue Main Drain catchment, in order to mitigate against the risk of flooding of Frankston’s central activity district (CAD).The project involves the construction of a 1550 m long, 2.5 m internal diameter tunnel, commencing upstream at the Monash University Peninsula Campus and traversing approximately west to the outlet located at Kananook Creek. The tunnel was excavated by a dual slurry-earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM), with the depth to tunnel crown ranging from 0.7 m to 14 m below the natural surface level. The TBM navigated 500 m radius curves, with a maximum drive length of 608 m. The tunnel lining consists of 2.5 m internal diameter, 250 mm thick reinforced concrete jacking pipe.The geotechnical conditions along the tunnel alignment consisted of mixed face ground conditions, predominately clay, with clayey sand and sandy clay and some sand deposits near Kananook Creek.This paper presents the challenges associated with the operation of the slurry separation plant during tunnel construction. In particular, the paper focuses the impact of slurry separation on tunnel advance rates, the lessons learnt during construction with regards to slurry separation and on the decision to adopt a dual slurry-earth pressure balance shield TBM. In addition this paper highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of the slurry separation requirements on a slurry TBM project prior to selecting the necessary plant.

"TiO2 is used in paints, plastics, rubber, paper, inks, textiles and other miscellaneous applications. The demand for the pigment grade Ti02 is growing at 3.0%/year on average and this invites the development of innovative and cost effective processes. The current processes are not designed to recycle the reagents and thereby discharge the effluents into the environment, causing an environmental concern.During this study, synthesis of TiO2 from an ilmenite concentrate was investigated using an innovative atmospheric mixed-chloride leach process. The solution purification was carried out using solvent extraction in two stages. In the first stage iron removal was carried out and in the second stage titanium was extracted. The strip solution obtained from the second stage solvent extraction contained the purified titanium and from this stream pigment grade Ti02 was recovered. The barren solution was used for reagent recovery and the regenerated leach liquor was recycled."

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance. Substantial progress has been made in classifying different types of these deposits according to general features, internal structure, mineralogy, and origin. In some cases it has even been possible to block out tonnage reserves in advance of mining. It is still easy, however, to make highly erroneous predictions after a preliminary examination of a pegmatite prospect. Pegmatites are important to the economic well being of the country and to its military security. They furnish virtually all the feldspar, strategic mica, beryl, columbium, tantalum, and caesium utilized in the United States, as well as sundry other minerals and significant amounts of lithium and rare earth minerals and gems. With the exception of vermiculite, occasional ilmenite-rutile, and perhaps soda-lime feldspar and garnet deposits, basic pegmatites are of little economic importance. Consequently in this paper, as in common parlance, the term pegmatite generally relates to coarsegrained acidic rocks or what is aptly called giant granite. Available data indicating the size and importance of the production and trade in specified pegmatite minerals are summarized in Table I. Geological Features Much of the latest thinking on the economic geology of pegmatites is now available in a 115-page monograph' by a group of experts who participated with geologists of the Federal Geological Survey in the widespread wartime investigations. Doubtless the most significant feature of the monograph is indicated by the title, The Internal Structure of Pegmatites, but it also contains a vast amount of other new information and includes the assimilated concepts of many earlier writers, whose works are given in a comprehensive list of references. The shape, size, attitude, and continuity of many pegmatite bodies is controlled by the structure of the older rocks in which they occur. If the older rocks are easily penetrated, e.g., biotite schist, most of the pegmatites in a given district will be found outside the parent granite mass as exterior pegmatites. Marginal pegmatites are more prevalent if the older rocks are massive, unsheared, and sparingly jointed. Networks of pegmatites are abundant in highly-jointed rocks. In strongly foliated schists the bodies are usually lenticular, whereas in highly-folded areas they assume tear drop, pipe or pod-like, bow-shaped, or sinuous forms. Jahns2 recognizes five major shape classes: l—dikes, sills, pipes, and elongate pods; 2— dikes, sills, pipes, and pods with bends, protuberances, or other irregularities; 3-—trough-or scoop-shaped bodies with or without complicating branches; 4—bodies with the form of an inverted trough or scoop; and 5—other bodies, including combinations of the above and miscellaneous shapes. Many pegmatite deposits are scarcely big enough to be recognizable as such. Most of them, in fact, are small tabular deposits less than 4 in. wide and usually without economic concentrations of minerals. On the other hand, some pegmatites are more than a mile long and over 500 ft wide. The ratios of length to breadth range from 1 : 1 to 1 : 100. Although the vertical dimension bears no invariable relationship to strike length, tabular deposits or large lenses are often symmetrical enough to show nearly as much continuity down dip as in their horizontal extension, and some pipes or pods are amazingly persistent in the vertical plane. Small pegmatites often string along a fairly definite trend line; in a given district major bodies may lie roughly parallel, and where only a few of them do not, the erratically disposed bodies generally differ in composition from those conforming to the regular pattern. This does not apply, however, in all districts. Characteristically, pegmatite veins pinch and swell or split into branches. When they pinch out entirely it is often possible to find a new body by prospecting the extension of the strike or dip, but the chances of finding a hidden deposit are ordinarily too uncertain to justify much subsurface prospecting. Diamond drilling may yield valuable information as to the continuity of known deposits whose upper portions are well-exposed. Some deposits, in fact, can be proved up for hundreds of feet by surface trenching and then intersected by drill holes at various depths like any other vein-like deposit. Others twist and branch, apparently defying all efforts to explore them short of actual mining.

"The mining industry continues to remain challenged. Lower commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves are amongst some of the primary factors contributing to the difficulties faced. Ore sorting technologies have demonstrated their potential to improve the downstream beneficiation performance. The general processing route sees all primary crushed material milled for liberation and then processed in accordance with characteristics of the gold therein, i.e.: refractory golds would require direct leaching or oxidation whilst free gold would follow the conventional cyanidation process, after gravity concentration. Ore dilution increases the associated operating costs within each stage of this process. The opportunity to process the same throughput at a higher grade can only be achieved through pre-concentration. Sensor based sorting has been examined on numerous occasions by various gold producers. Test work carried out on different bulk low grade gold ores has shown the successful applicability of ore sorting to remove waste, whilst maintaining high recovery rates of gold. The results of a combined XRT/Laser sensor sorter have shown grade improvements of over 300% from feed grades of 0,25g/t to 1,15g/t at gold recoveries of 66% and waste ejection rates of 85%. This paper presents some of the results from the work undertaken by STEINERT with respect to gold sulphide ore sorting and presents a modelled financial scenario, which can enable a company to target and reclaim low grade ores.INTRODUCTION The mining and minerals processing industry presents with many different challenges including, volatile commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves. Conventional processing routes will continue to play a crucial role in the beneficiation process, however innovative methods of reducing operating costs and optimizing on the overall circuit performance is where technologies such as sensor based sorting come into the fore. Sensor based sorting as a dry mechanical process not only reduces water consumption by eliminating unnecessary waste but also reduces the requirements for reagents in the downstream processes. Sensor based sorting under dry conditions presents a highly efficient alternative to wet pre-concentration methods such as dense medium separation (DMS)."

In 1803 the purchase of the immense territory called the province of Louisiana wm arranged between Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States, and Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of France. This central portion of what is now the United States was claimed in 1682 by the explorer Robert de La Salle for France, who continued to hold her title to the vast domain until 1762, when it passed by treaty to Spain, only to be retroceded to France in 1802, in consequence of Napoleon's military domination of Spain. Jefferson did not care to see New Orleans and its extensive hinterland pass into the hands of France. Spain did not matter so much; she was quiet and feeble, whereas France was restless and aggressive under Napoleon, who had dreams of founding a French colonial empire on the American continent. The expression of American feeling that Jefferson elicited came as a surprise to Napoleon, who concluded that a contest was not worth while, for his navy had been shattered by the English, and it was evident that only maritime supremacy could enable him to retain this trans-Atlantic possession; so he resolved to put it out of the grasp of England and at the same time replenish his military chest by selling Louisiana to the United States. The price was 60 million francs. By the terms of the Louisiana purchase a magnificent territory was added to the national domain; it covered more than a million square miles, or more than the total area of the United States at that time. Louisiana included the present States of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma, with parts of Colorado, Idaho, and Minnesota; but

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

The entire subject area of micro-seismic events due to stored strain energy, as distinct from gas-driven coal outbursts, can be readily sub-divided into firstly events with their energy source from within the coal seam (termed “bursts”) and secondly, event with their energy source outside of the coal seam in either the overburden and/or floor strata. The reason for sub-dividing micro-seismic events in this manner is that if the causation mechanisms and associated geotechnical conditions are materially different, then effective pre-mining predictions and subsequent operational controls may also differ. Attempting to explain a multitude of micro-seismic event types without consideration of varying source mechanisms will inevitably lead to inadequate causal explanations and effective controls.

The results of complex processing sulphide copper ore and advantages of recovery of copper by vat and heap leaching, sorption, cementation and electrolytic solutions processing and utilization of waste material after heap leaching of copper for production of building materials were investigated. The combined chemical solvents with the additives of oxidizing agents are developed at the KazNTU. The solvents are inorganic or organic chemical reagents, which form complexes of Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, Sr, Co etc. Recovery of non-ferrous metals from solutions and purification of industrial waste waters is carried out on the base of using new synthetic and natural sorbents (from local raw materials) which are able to bind ions in both cationic and anionic forms depending on type of ligands and external conditions. Optimum parameters of copper sorption were determined. The developed wasteless technologies of copper extraction from sulphide ores with usage of new non-toxic solvents and accessible sorbents with full recycling of water are tested in pilot scale heap leaching, and are recommended as the ecological, economical and practical alternative to traditional methods.

A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.
