At various stages during their manufacturing processes - from casting to finishing before delivery - semi-finished steel and special alloy products must be cut and surface-treated as well. The requirements for the individual conditioning steps, however, can be quite different. For example, the work piece can be hot, warm or cold. At any rate, the product must always be perfectly prepared for the next manufacturing step - reliably, in the shortest-possible time and at the lowest-possible cost. "In view of the chronic overcapacity problem in the world potash industry and Saskatchewan's recent emergence as a major producer, the long-term outlook for potash productive capacity and consumption is of importance and interest to both the Saskatchewan Government and the potash industry. This paper is based on a report recently published by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources on projected world potash productive capacity and consumption for the ten-year period 1970 to 1980. Potash productive capacity and consumption are estimated on a country and regional basis and projected annually to 1980. Tables and graphs are included which summarize projected capacity and consumption for the period and illustrate the impact of Saskatchewan's capacity upon the North American and world potash industries."

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. "Current continuous casting processes are going through a rapid evolution of advances and new developments. At the same time, intense efforts are being directed to the development of radical new technologies such as continuous casting of thin slabs and strip steel.Traditionally, the casting processes for steel have been anticipated by the development and implementation of processes in the non-ferrous industry. This trend is reviewed and what it may portend for steel is described.IntroductionThe continuous casting of steel has been a widely adopted process in the production of steel. The concepts for this processing go back into the early and mid 1800's; however, commerical development was delayed for a variety of reasons until the mid twentieth century.Beginning in the early 1960's, adoption of continuous casting was initiated and continues at this point in time to be accelerated. In Japan, more than 90% of the steel produced is continuously cast (1). More than 50% of the steel produced in the United States is continuously cast and this fraction continues to rise (2). Numerous examples can be cited of installations costing well over $200,000,000 which have provided a payoff in less than a year and a half. As this process has continued to be applied and its technology to increase, computer control systems have been installed. In particular, in the larger plants producing slabs, sophisticated computer systems involving the integration and networking of mini-computers, micro-computers, and mainframe including back-up systems at all levels are being utilized. Para ello se reeexaminan ocho minerales raros (bismuto, selenio, teluro, cadmio, talio, indio, bismuto, indio de alta pureza), cuya composición de elementos raros se registra en la concentración de algunos productos o residuos. Estos minerales son del grupo del cobre Chalcópirita, Enargita, Tetrahedrita, Bornita y Chalcosita; del plomo: la Galena, Jamesonita y Gratonita, y la Esfalerita que proporciona el zinc. Los concentrados y minerales que entran al proceso de fundición se reparten en tres circuitos principales: cobre, plomo y zinc. A research project was conducted at the University of British Columbia (UBC) resulting in the development and evaluation of a novel comminution circuit incorporating autogenous grinding and parallel trains of cone crushers and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). A primary driver for the circuit was to treat ore from deposits with clay and variable hardness. This paper summarizes the unique pilot-plant test program that was developed as a basis for experimental simulation and lists the main findings of the research, including the circuit?s potential operational cost savings compared to a conventional SAG circuit.

Steelmaking slag is a by-product in considerable volume and a valuable material for various applications. In general, steelmaking slag is an alkaline compound of CaO, Fe2O3, and SiO2. However, its characteristics varies depending on the feedstocks, steelmaking process and cooling method of the slag. To utilize this by-product effectively, this study investigated the characteristics of steelmaking slags taken from Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. The results showed that the slags mainly consist of the oxides of calcium, iron, and silicon, with low contents of magnesia, alumina, and manganese oxide with a feature of high alkalinity and lime saturation factor. The major mineral phases include belite, calcium ferrite, calcium hydroxide, wustite, quartz, and small amount of elite. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated the weight loss from ambient temperature to 800 °C is 8% in total. Melting test showed the glass transition temperature is between 1300 and 1350 °C, flow temperature is about 1400 °C. The slag samples investigated in this study can be considered as a typical glass-ceramic composite.

It highlights the successful use of vertically-mounted jet fans in exhaust ventilation shafts for a passenger rail overbuild in New York City. The paper compares shaft dimensions, jet fan placement, and measured airflows, also comparing these measurements to predictions from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Major-element data for unaltered, unmineralized felsic host rocks from a number of stratigraphically simple, massive volcanogenic Zn-Cu(-Pb) sulphide deposits of low metamorphic grade have been compiled. The petrochemical affinities of these host rocks have been determined (by standard means and by discriminant analysis) and compared. This comparison indicates that volcanogenic deposits in felsic terrains are not restricted to the classical calc-alkaline rock association as previously thought, but can actually be hosted by rocks showing a range of iron content. There is a positive correlation between differentiation trend and are tenor. Zn-Cu ores usually have iron-rich felsic hosts (most Canadian Shield deposits); Pb-Zn -Cu ores have iron-poor felsic hosts (Japanese, Iberian and Tasmanian deposits). This parallels the antipathetic relationship between iron content and background lead levels evident in young, unmineralized, island arcs as well as in many older belts. Correlations between differentiation trend on one hand and massive ore mineralogy and the relative proportions of various rock type (including rhyolite, quartz-porphyry and coarse pyroclastic rocks) on the other are also evident. It is concluded that the recognition of a calc-alkaline differentiation trend cannot be used as a prospecting guide, as has previously been proposed. However, in view of the above correlations, the recognition of a given trend may aid in the formulation of an effective exploration philosophy.

Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

In this work, a new flotation strategy was proposed for the flotation of rutile. In this strategy, rutile was activated by Pb(NO3)2 and then floated with amyl xanthate (AX) as a collector at pH 8. Pb(OH)+ was the dominant lead species in the solution at pH 8 and is believed to be the major species reacting with the rutile surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) study revealed that the lead activation products were well distributed on the rutile surface, and AX− could further bind with the Pb atom on the Pb-activated rutile surface. In this regard, the Pb-activated rutile could be floated by AX. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Pb(OH)2 was generated on the Pb-activated rutile surface. The electron transfer during the adsorption of the AX− on the Pb-activated rutile surface was also investigated by XPS analysis.

The Hall-Hoult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-H6roult cell - the electrolyte, the anode and the cathode - are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride - carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.The construction and testing of a full-size "Low Energy Cell" is scheduled for early 1986 and is expected to reduce energy consumption in aluminium production by about 15%.

iliary agent was proposed. The mineralogical transformation and silicon extraction kinetics of laterite nickel ore in alkaline hydrothermal treatment were studied. The effects of reaction temperature (175 ~ 250℃), molar ratios of sodium hydroxide to ore (1.05 ~ 1.2:1), and laterite nickel ore particle size (44 ~ 178 μm) on the extraction ratio of silica were investigated by using the shrinking core model. The results show that the extraction ratio of silica increases with the increase of reaction temperature, sodium hydroxide to ore molar ratio, reaction time, and the decrease of raw ore particle size. The kinetic analysis shows that the separation of silica in laterite ore can be described by internal diffusion model. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of the reaction was 8.87 kJ mol− 1, and the kinetic modeling was established.

Titanium ranks as one of the more abundant elements, is widely distributed, and occurs in concentrated form in numerous deposits. This substance was discoveres 140 years ago; but despite the efforts of metallurgists and chemists to find a place for it in industry, only within the last 10 or 15 years has the increased use of titanium pigments provided any extensive outlet for titanium ores. Even to-day titanium is confined to a few highly specialized industrial applications. The metal itself is now quoted regularly in trade journale, but scarcely yet can it be said that the production or use of the metal. has progressed very far beyond the laboratory stage. Ferroalloys containing the element were largely used for a time, especially in connection with the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails; but as American rail- ways adopted open-hearth rails in preference to Bessemer rails, the demand for the alloys in the rail manufacture gradually dwindled into insignificance. New outlets for ferrotitanium have been found in the steel industry; and the production of titanium alloys, both in the United States and in Europe, has increased in recent years. By far the largest use of titanium at the present time, however, is in pigments. The manufacture of titanium white began in Norway, but at present the United States is the leading producer. One of the two companies now operating in the United States is also the leading factor in European production. Although titanium occurs, in many minerals, the principal commercial sources are rutile (the natural oxide, Ti02) and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide, FeO. TiO2). The latter is a coal-black mineral, but it is the one used in the manufacture of the titanium white of commerce, as well as in the manufacture of ferroalloys and arc-lamp electrodes. Rutile, the natural oxide, is not pure white and, being less common in nature, costs more; it is, therefore, reserved for use in the manufacture of titanium chemicals employed in relatively small amounts in dye works and bleacheries and for sundry minor purposes. This paper summarizes the titanium industry, with special reference to its economic aspects. It is offered as a survey of current trade literature and as a digest of material in the files of the bureau and is presented in response to numerous inquiries from prospective producers as to ways and means of exploiting deposits. (At present, much of the ilmenite consumed in this country comes from overseas, principally from British India..). A forthcoming circular, devoted to deposits of titanium-bearing ores, deals with foreign and domestic sources of supply.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. This report presents a review of the distribution and exploration potential of platinum-group elements (PGE) in Québec; it is based on published and unpublished analytical data. This qualitative evaluation of the PGE potential, whether in PGE-dominant deposits or in Ni-Cu-dominant deposits with co-product PGE, is based on interelement ratios such as Ni/Pd, Cu/Ir, Cu/Pt, and Cu/Pd. Good PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with magmas fertile in PGE, are identified. Less favorable PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with PGE-depleted magmas, are also mentioned. The importance of exploring for deposits similar to those at lac des Îles and East Bull Lake (Ontario) is emphasized.

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.
