[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]

In situ metals research to characterize the hydrology of a fractured crystalline rock mass in under-ground mine stopes is discussed. The objective of this study was to find the potential direction, velocity, and concentrations of a lixiviant plume, should leaching solvents (lixiviants) escape from a test stope. The study was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, CO. Since this was a method evaluation site, the lixiviant was simulated using water and acceptable tracers. The site is located in moderately fractured Precambrian migmatite-biotite gneisses of the Idaho Springs Formation. The data required for the characterization were obtained from geologic maps and reports, core logs, and air and water permeability tests. The acquired data were analyzed and applied to a computer model that calculated' the characteristics of a lixiviant plume originating at the stope. A sensitivity analysis showed that dispersivity, ground water velocity, fracture porosity, and fracture spacing had notable effects on the concentration of the plume. Assuming a saturated rock mass, the lixiviant plume would disperse to undetectable levels in a very short time because of a high fracture density at the mine site.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. Os aços com um alto teor de Mn (15-30%) e os elementos de liga, Si e Al, apresentam plasticidade excepcional devido à geração de maclas de deformação (efeito TWIP) ou múltiplas transformações martensíticas (efeito TRIP). Este trabalho avaliou a evolução microestrutural, a formação da textura e sua influência sobre o comportamento mecânico de um aço contendo 17%Mn-0,06%C laminado a frio com reduções de 45% e 90%, e recozimentos a 700°C durante tempos diferentes. A microestrutura foi analisada por microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura, EBSD e difração de raios X. A redução um frio favorece a formação da martensita a'. No aço recozido estão presentes as fases martensita a? e e e austenita. O limite de escoamento e de resistência à tração alcançaram 750 e 950 MPa, respectivamente, com o alongamento total de 45%, confirmando sua alta capacidade de encruamento. A reversão da martensita para austenita ocorre simultaneamente com a recristalização desta.

The characteristics of gas-phase detonations were observed in 20 instrumented firings within earthen tunnels, in 100 such detonations in a 24-in-diam by l63-ft-long steel pipe, and in about 200 smaller scale firings. Most of the fuels studied were representative hydrocarbons--acetylene, propane, gasoline, and a roughly equimolar mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene, and propane. In a pipe with two closed ends, the detonable limits were demonstrated to be very nearly the same as reported limits of flammability. The side-on impulses (pressures integrated over 200-msec intervals) were shown to be the same function of concentration regardless of whether deflagration or detonation had occurred. In a pipe with only the initiation end closed, the impulses of all fuel-air systems tended toward the same level when averaged over comparable ranges of fuel concentration; the lower pressures with saturated hydrocarbons were nearly compensated by longer durations of pressure transient. In all fuel-air systems, unexpectedly high impulses were obtained with slightly lean mixtures. In earthen confining structures, the impulse, of the explosion was efficiently converted into momentum of the failing wall. In the configurations studied, an earth velocity of about 20 fps was critical to overcome the soil's resistance to shear. The destructive effect was determined by gas pressure rather than by total energy release. The assignment of a "TNT equivalent" to an explosive gas mixture is discussed in terms of the confinement of the mixture.

Os problemas gerados no processamento do aço inoxidável AISI 316 são um grande problema do setor metal mecânico, por exemplo, no processo de usinagem, onde o material sofre altas taxas de deformação plástica e elevadas temperaturas na região de contato ferramenta-peça. Além disso, a adesão de aço inoxidável em materiais de maior dureza, no caso a ferramenta, também são problemas enfrentados. Neste trabalho foi feito um estudo qualitativo em escala laboratorial do contato entre um material de maior dureza (aço AISI M2 nitretado a plasma) e o aço AISI 316. Foram realizados ensaios de microdureza Vickers e rugosidade afim de caracterizar as amostras de aço AISI M2. Ensaios tribológicos do tipo Ball-on-Plate foram realizados com a finalidade de determinar o coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo para os pares tribológicos formados. Análises feitas via MEV/EDS foram feitas tanto nas trilhas geradas nas superfícies das amostras quanto nas esferas, para detectar pontos de adesão, deformação plástica e transferência de material entre as duas superfícies. Ficou comprovado que a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica proporcionou um menor coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo quando posta em contato com a esfera de aço inoxidável, bem como foi possível observar a formação de uma menor quantidade de pontos de adesão de aço inoxidável para esta superfície.

"This paper provides an understanding of interpreting and evaluating airborne time domain electromagnetic (TEM) surveys as applied to massive sulfide exploration. Variations in the conductive morphologies of massive sulfide ore systems are discussed, followed by forward modelling exercises examining the derived TEM response to these morphologies and discussion of the subtleties of data interpretation. Deposit morphology in the orientation at formation and the variations occurring due to later deformation are considered. Images of corresponding resistivity–depth models are provided. The combined modelling results provide a low-cost method for initial interpretation and screening of TEM anomalies. RÉSUMÉ Cet article nous permet de mieux comprendre l’interprétation et l’évaluation des levés élec-tromagnétiques aéroportés en domaine temporel (TDEM, de l’anglais time-domain electromagnetic) appliqués à l’exploration du sulfure massif. Y sont débattues les variations au niveau des morphologies conductrices des systèmes de minéralisation du sulfure massif, suivies d’exercices de modélisation prospective qui examinent la réponse dérivée des TDEM à ces morphologies et d’une discussion sur les subtilités de l’interprétation des données. L’étude envisage la morphologie de l’orientation originelle non déformée des gisements ainsi que les variations résultant d’une déformation ultérieure. Des images des modèles correspondants de résistivité-profondeur sont fournies. Les résultats combinés relatifs à la modélisation proposent une méthode peu onéreuse d’interprétation et de contrôle initiaux des anomalies dans les TDEM.INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic geophysical surveys are an indispensable foundation of many mineral exploration programs and can account for as much as half of the predrilling exploration costs. Quantitative mass interpretation of the survey results remains difficult due to the infinite variation of deposit morphologies, their complex physical properties, and the presence of barren conductive materials that can mimic or mask the response of targeted ore. Many modern geophysical investigations that focus on time domain electromagnetic (TEM) data interpretations are devoted to problems with inversion and modelling and their algorithms. Although a few of these investigations have resulted in commercial software products, these require highly qualified and experienced users and usually include geometric assumptions. Furthermore, without the input of known physical properties and geometric constraints, the inversion results are highly ambiguous. A number of case studies document the geophysical responses to known targets in well-defined and diverse geo-electrical environments, providing a high degree of correlation between field obser-vation and the results of the modelling used in this style of investigation (Hone, 1980; Schneider & Emerson, 1980; Tyne, Idnurm, & Malone, 1981; Bishop & Lewis, 1992; Hopgood & Hungerford, 1994; Meju, 2002; Yang & Oldenburg, 2016). The uniqueness of the target/environment parameters and their specific features limits the use logy is poorly understood. The responses are therefore that are devoid of complicating environmental factors (e.g., highly conductive overburden and hostrocks or nonuniform target conductivity) as a first approach to the interpretation process of such case studies as the main reference for interpreting TEM survey responses in areas where the underlying geomodelled from generalized and typical geological models"

"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

With the growing importance of fluid injection in recent years, the petroleum industry has been investigating and field- testing a variety of new methods designed to modify the physical properties of reservoir oil to improve the efficiency of gas and water injection. These procedures include condensing-gas drive, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) injection, alcohol-slug process, high-pressure-gas displacement, detergent-solution flooding, and in situ combustion (30, 37).3 A new and different method to increase the effectiveness of gas and water injection has been tested by the Bureau of Mines, Consideration of both fundamental and practical factors that operate to limit the oil recovery attain- able by conventional oil-displacement mechanisms led to the concept of a displacement mechanism called the foam-drive method. This report describes the experimental study that tested this concept in the laboratory.

International and U.S. chromium material flow, losses, and environmental releases and transfers from mining through industrial processing, end use, and recycling are identified and quantified. Average (1983-92) U.S. consumption has been: metallurgical industry, 87 pct; chemical industry, 10 pet; and refractory industry, 3 pct. Average chromium content of aluminum, cobalt, copper, nickel, and titanium alloys and alloy, carbon, and stainless steel alloys was estimated. Anthropogenic chromium consumption was estimated for the cement and copper industries. N on-commodity cycle anthropogenic chromium mobilization resulting from U.S. fuel and fertilizer use was estimated. Commodity cycle anthropogenic world chromium loss from mining and primary consumer industry was estimated to be equivalent to about 56 pct of chromium contained in chromite ore production and represented a loss rate of 181 kt-Cr/Mt-CrOre. Chromium released to the atmosphere from natural and from anthropogenic sources were comparable in magnitude. Chromium released to soil was mostly from anthropogenic sources, and aquatic releases were all anthropogenic. Domestic product chromium losses exceed process losses by more than a factor of 10 showing the importance and potential environmental impact of post-consumer recycling. The location of historical and current domestic chromium industry processing sites in 23 States were reported. Chromium releases and transfers to the environment were estimated from 1973 through 2002 by primary consumer industry. A decrease in chromium releases and transfers to the environment was anticipated.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the emission control methods, including the capital investments and operating cost, necessary for further reducing lead levels in ambient air at the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri and the East Helena, MT, smelter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more stringent lead in ambient air standards than those currently in effect. This report presents theoretically achievable lead emission reductions and estimated capital and operating costs. Lead emission inventories theoretically can be reduced from 1985 levels by 2,421 lb/d at the three Missouri operations by containing and filtering fugitive emissions within structural enclosures and baghouses. The aggregated capital and operating costs in 1986 dollars using conventional environmental and workplace technologies are estimated to be $250,014,100 and $18,507,800, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.063/lb as refined lead. Additional regulatory costs attributable to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSKA), U.S. Department of Labor, workplace standards are included since proposed environmental controls may otherwise degrade workplace conditions. Continuous drossing is evaluated as an alternative to conventional OSHA controls. Substituting continuous drossing for conventional work- place technology results in an estimated aggregated capital and operating costs of $258,344,800 and $15,719,600, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.062/1b as refined lead. For comparison, the average open market price of refined lead during the first quarter of 1986 was $0.184/lb.

Some 30 years ago Stevenson (1940) underscored the fact that most of the world's molybdenite production came from the Cordillera that comprise the western part of North America, and that the northern extension of the Cordillera into British Columbia is not essentially dissimilar to the United States section. Therefore, in view of the successful development of molybdenite resources in the United States, he concluded that prospecting in the Canadian section f the Cordillera should be encouraged. However, as recently as seven years ago Schneider (1963) remarks that no large economic deposits have been brought into production in British Columbia, although one important property was being evaluated. World production f molybdenum ore was sporadic until 1900. Among the very early producing areas in North America were Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. World War I provided the stimulus that brought the Climax deposit into production, and in 1920 Questa, New Mexico followed, although the ore came from fissure vein deposits at that time. In the early part f this century high grade deposits in various parts f the world containing 5-20 percent MoS2 were exploited. In Canada most production during World War I came from Quebec and Ontario. With the build-up of world tension and the inception f hostilities in 1939, British demand was satisfied by United States producers (Schneider, 1963).

The question of the influence of gases upon the properties of copper has received the attention of a number of investigators, among whom Sieverts,' Iwase,2 Lobley and Jepson3 stand preeminent. Solubility of Gases in Copper Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a variety of gases in the metal in the solid and liquid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metal. In this respect they disagree with Lobley and Jepson, who have based their opinions upon the appearance of small ingots of the metal which had been fused in an atmosphere of one or other of three gases and had then been rapidly cooled, while surrounded by gas, to the freezing point (rate—possibly 30" to 60" C. per sec.). The ingots that had been fused and cooled under nitrogen and carbon monoxide were free from blowholes and it was assumed that these gases were not absorbed in amounts much in excess of those which would dissolve in the solid metal; the ingots similarly treated under hydrogen were full of blowholes and it was assumed in this case that gas was ejected on solidification of the copper. The effect of varying the rate of freezing upon the character of the test ingots was not examined by these investigators; otherwise, it is felt, their views might have been subject to modification. Sieverts' most important contribution is that the solubility of a gas in any metal is proportional to the square root of its pressure or concentration. This report describes and appraises recent progress in the development of a differential sulfatizing process for recovering a ferrograde manganese oxide from low-grade manganiferous ferruginous materials in the Cuyuna range. Individual process steps were carried out successfully using a 20-inch-diameter shaft for continuous countercurrent sulfatization of the manganese, a multiple-compartment rotary drum for leaching the water-soluble manganese sulfate, a submerged-combustion evaporator for the recovery of monohydrate crystals of manganese sulfate, and a shaft furnace for the thermal decomposition of sulfate crystals for production of a ferrograde manganese oxide and a sulfur dioxide gas suitable for sulfatization of fresh are. Of the two general kinds of Cuyuna manganiferous materials--the carbonate slates and the oxidized ores--only the slates were studied at pilot scale.

A cost analysis for two alternative contour mining methods is performed to compare their results. The methods evaluated are: 1) Front-End Loader/Truck Haulback and 2) Scraper Haulback. Before performing these analyses, output requirements and equipment needs are found based on integrating geometric limitations with material properties. The final geometric design establishes limits on clearances, congestion problems and grades (with associated running surface materials). All calculations are kept practical, with assumptions clearly stated. The cost analysis is a unique, easily utilized compilation of several different approaches incorporating cost engineering principles. The strengths of each are welded into a cohesive entity once again aimed at practical application. The results are presented in tabular form.

In-situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the anion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in southeast Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate, and trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant prior to yellow cake precipitation.
