"The main reason for the significant carbon intensity of integrated steelmaking (approximately 1.8 tons of CO2 per ton of steel) is the use of carbon-based reductants in blast furnace ironmaking. Several changes to blast furnace ironmaking have been proposed as ways to reduce carbon intensity and cost. A conceptually simple two-zone blast furnace mass and energy balance can be used to quantify the expected impact of such process changes on coke rate, carbon intensity, and productivity. Examples to be discussed include top gas recycling, combining lower blast temperatures with increased coal injection to produce a rich top gas, using prereduced feed, and tuyère injection of natural gas. The use of the operating window – which illustrates how allowable flame temperatures and top-gas temperatures constrain feasible oxygen enrichment levels – is illustrated. Increased use of natural gas would lower the carbon intensity of blast furnace ironmaking.IntroductionBecause of the significant carbon intensity of steelmaking (approximately 1.8 tons of CO2 emitted per ton of steel produced) and the high production rate of steel (more than 1.4 billion tonnes per annum), steelmaking is responsible for a large percentage, approximately 6.7%, of world anthropogenic CO2 emissions [1]. By far the largest input of the carbon into conventional steelmaking is as coke, which is essential to blast furnace ironmaking. A typical fuel rate for blast furnace ironmaking is 450 kg of fuel per tonne of hot metal (THM). (""Fuel"" includes coke and injectants which partially replace coke; pulverized coal and natural gas are typical injectants.) Assuming the fuels to contain 90% carbon on average, and since nearly all of this carbon exits the steel plant as CO2, a fuel rate of 450 kg is equivalent to a CO2 intensity of 1485 kg/THM – by far the largest part of the total CO2 intensity of steelmaking.Blast furnace ironmaking is expected to remain the main source of new iron units; this paper gives some estimates of the extents to which further reductions in carbon intensity from blast furnace ironmaking is possible. A recent European assessment suggested that blast furnace process intensification options such as increased pulverized-coal injection or natural gas injection would yield only modest energy savings [2]. However, if the focus is on CO2 emissions rather than on total energy use, there would be an advantage to using fuels – such as natural gas – which have lower carbon contents relative to energy content."

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling."

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. These advancements come at a critical moment for the industry, as copper prices remain near historic highs. The keynote session will emphasize that meeting future mineral demand will require a concerted effort between government, industry and technology partners to secure responsible, domestic production. Immediately following the keynote, the Robert E. Murray Innovation Award Lecture will start at 10 a.m. as part of the same session. "Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

It is impracticable to prepare for the present number of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin a detailed account of the memorable Joint Meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute and our Institute, held in London, the last week in July, and of the, innumerable festivities, entertainments and excursions which accompanied and followed it, in England, Scotland, Wales and Germany. This preliminary sketch, from which all " useful particulars "' have been carefully omitted, is published unofficially, as a convenient answer to the manifold inquiries of members who did not go, and who are now trying to alleviate their unavailing regret by indulging their curiosity. Perhaps they secretly hope to hear that they did not lose so very much, after all-that the affair was not all that could have been desired or dreamed; that there were serious drawbacks, shortcomings and disappointments; and that it is just as well to have stayed it home, and now to hear about it. Let them lay no such flattering unction to their souls. The month they have missed would have been the time of their lives. They will never, never know how good a time it was, or adequately repent of their folly, if they could have gone with us, and voluntarily did not go of course, those who would but could not, have our immeasurable pity, without blame. I shall present here no consecutive and minute story, but only a series of general paragraphs concerning different aspects and stages of our experience. THE WEATHER. The proverbial good fortune of the Institute attended its visiting members and guests at every stage of the late London meeting and the numerous excursions which accompanied or followed it. In the past few years, the numbers of underground coal mines in this country using longwa11 mining method have been dramatically increased. In the latest count there are approximately 90 10ngwa11 faces amounting roughly 8% of the total underground production. Meanwhile, shortwall mining adapting longwa11 powered supports to 'coal mining and handling systems in room and pillar mining is also gaining importance in the Appalachian coal field. Although there are only 7 operating shortwall faces so far, indications are that it will be increasing steadily. Modern longwall faces are highly mechanized and productive. One of these key elements that contribute to the success of modern longwall mining is self-advanced powered supports. There are several types of powered supports. Frame type is two sets of one to four hydraulic legs supporting beam-type roof canopy and floor base. However, chock type is more popular and connected to broad roof and base structure. Shield supports were introduced recently but proved to be highly successful (1). A shield support consists of two hydraulic jacks mounted between a base plate and a gob shield. The base plate is hinged to gob shield which is in turn hinged to roof canopy.

Introduction During the past six seasons the writer has been engaged in semi-detailed investigations on the coal areas lying along the front of the Rocky mountains between the Brazeau river and the Smoky River Coal Reserve (see Map, Figure 1). The purpose of this paper is to present some observations pertaining to the stratigraphy and structure of the district, touching especially upon the lithological units into which the Lower Cretaceous sediments have been divided, the thicknesses of the formations at different localities, the number, thicknesses and horizons of the principal coal seams, and the structural conditions which exist in the various fields.

Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation is a challenging and demanding field, requiring application of professional knowledge, skill and experience of the highest order. If the many potential pitfalls are to be avoided, however, there are two other requirements which are of equal, if not greater, importance:good communication, and common sense. Estimation of Mineral Resources and particularly of Ore Reserves is almost always a team effort, involving a number of disciplines. Good teamwork requires good communication, both between team members and between the team and other parties having an interest in the process. Breakdown in these lines of communication can have far reaching effects on the project under consideration. The need to use common sense during a Resource or Reserve estimation exercise would seem to be self-evident. It is surprising, however, how often rigid adherence to procedures and methods prevails at the expense of clear thinking, usually with adverse and sometimes fatal effects on the project under consideration. This has become increasingly true as computerised methods have assumed a central role in Resource/Reserve estimation. The critical question that estimators should ask themselves at all stages of the process is: æIs what is being done sensible given the data available, what is known of this deposit and the purpose of the exercise?Æ

Low-cost and environment-friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and starch, have been used in flotation of some sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Certain green modifiers may be used as dispersants, flocculants, depressants, or activators. The functions of green modifiers in froth flotation highly depend on their molecular composition, flotation slurry chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, etc. This paper will discuss the fundamentals, current applications, and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC, and corn starch in valuable minerals (phosphate, potash, and iron ores) and the unwanted gangue minerals (silica and clay minerals) flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns with the more plug-flow environments than in conventional flotation cells approaching perfectly mixed conditions. This is because the hydrodynamic cavitation-generated ultrafine bubbles could help bridge ultrafine particles to form aggregates, promote the formation of flocs, and increase the stability of flocs.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

The Bureau of Mines drilled Wyoming Corehole No. 1 in Sweetwater County, Wyo., to sample Green River Formation oil shale. Core obtained was assayed for oil yield to determine richness and stratigraphic distribution of oil shale in the deposit. Oil shale in place at Wyoming No. 1 site represents over 200 million barrels of oil per square mile. Additional data useful in evaluating the deposit, including generalized stratigraphy and mineralogy, detailed lithologic descriptions of the core, rock specific gravity, and bore-hole logs, are presented with the oil-yield data. The sampled Wyoming oil shale resembles Mahogany-zone oil shale in rock properties and gross mineralogy. A statistically derived equation relating shale density to oil yield for the Wyoming deposit compares with a similar relationship valid for the better known Mahogany-zone oil shales in Colorado and Utah. A density log from Wyoming Corehole No. 1 is calibrated for direct oil-yield logging. The alternating rich and lean beds of shale at this site may permit creating the permeability necessary for direct production of shale oil from the shale in place.

IT is customary for the president of an engineering society, in his annual address, to describe either some engineering problem with which he has beer connected or to review the work of the society during his administration. My first thought, this being the sesquicentennial year of our nation, was to review the advance in coal mining for the past fifty years, during which period I have been more or less intimately con-nected with the bituminous coal industry, and have personally witnessed most of the great changes which have occurred in methods and machinery used in the production of coal, but preparation of the requisite address would take more time than could be spared to prepare it, and its presentation would consume so much time that it .would not be suitable. The new arrangement providing for giving the presi-dent's address at the business meeting makes it more .appropriate to review the work of the Institute during the past year, together with some suggestions which appeal to me as being of advantage to the future wel-fare of the Institute, which I will try to do briefly. The work of the business office has been reviewed in the Secretary's report and it will not be necessary for me to dwell on it. Suffice it to say, it seems to be going along very well. Additional work could be done which would be to the advantage of the Institute, if we had the money with which to defray the necessary ex-pense incident to it, but I will refer to this again later. I would be derelict if I did not refer to the splendid work of the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary. Keeping in touch with all the sections, which number now about 26, and affiliated student societies which number 40, besides special committees, and represent-ing the Institute on various boards, provides work enough to occupy the Secretary's time almost exclu-sively. In addition to this the Secretary and the As-sistant Secretary have the work of editing and publishing the TRANSACTIONS of the Institute; the issuing of the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY, in the splendid manner in which it goes out to the mem-bership is no light task and I think they should receive the commendation of the membership for this work.

The stability of foams and froth plays an important role in flotation, in which small amounts of relatively weak non-ionic surfactants (frothers) are used to produce air bubbles and foams. In the present work, factors affecting the stability of the foams produced in the presence of common frothers, such as n-pentanol, n-octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Schelud-ko-Exerowa type to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses. The results were used to determine the contributions from the various surface forces to the disjoining pressures in the thin lamellae (foam) films formed between air bubbles. In addition, we used a model developed by Wang and Yoon (Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochem. Eng. Aspects, 2006) to calculate the elasticities of the lamellae films at the critical thicknesses at which films rupture. The surface forces and elasticity da-ta were then compared with the foam stabilities in the presence of the various flotation frothers. It was found that foam stabilities are controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces, the relative contributions of which change with frother type and concentration. In general, surface forces play a more important role at relatively low frother concentrations, while elasticity plays a more important role at higher concentrations. At the frother additions usually employed in the mining industry, MIBC relies on surface forces while PPG-400 relies on film elasticity in producing stable foams. The former is capable of dampening the hydrophobic force, which is a major attractive force destabilizing lamellae films, while the latter is capable of reducing surface tensions at low concentrations.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultra- mafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe- Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing' was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

"A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to iu presence. Thus, silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), which was originally thought to be a variant of silicosis, results from inhalation of coal mine dust that usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.HISTORYSilicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconiosis. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist. 26 They noted that coal trimmers, i.e., special stevedores who leveled coal in the holds of ships at the Cardiff and Swansea docks in Wales, developed identical nodules on the chest radiograph to those of underground miners. The difference was that these men had never worked underground and that the coal was washed before it was loaded into ships; thus, it was unlikely that these men were exposed to silica. Gough54 examined the lungs of coal trimmers who died and found that the histologic appearance of the pulmonary lesions was distinctly different from the whorled nodules seen in silicosis. Gough,"" and subsequently Heppleston,"" then showed that the lung lesions in coal trimmers were similar to those in underground coal miners and different from those of classical silicosis. Nagelschmidt 78 analyzed the mineral content of miners' lungs that became available at autopsy. These studies caused him to propose a scheme in which the relative proportions of silica, other minerals, and/or coal deposited in the lungs determined the type of pulmonary response which develops, i.e., classical silicosis, mixed-dust disease, or CWP."

"The Bullmoose Mine is currently under construction in the North East Coal area of British Columbia, and approximately $300 million will be spent to bring this 2.3 million-tonnes-per-year metallurgical and thermal coal mine into production by December 1, 1983.The project is an unincorporated joint venture undertaking, with Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, holding 51%, Lornex Mining Corporation holding 39%, and Nissho-Iwai (Canada) Ltd. holding 10%. Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project.This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, construction progress, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements.IntroductionThe Bullmoose Mine Project"" is located about 87 road kilometres south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 road km to the east.The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high quality, medium volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of 0.6 mty will be thermal coal production.Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine will commence. The plant should be fully operational by December 1983, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port is scheduled for January 1984."

Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.
