Kaolin, or china clay, is the term applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates. Because of its purity, light color, and refractory properties, kaolin is used extensively in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic wares and as a filler by the rubber and paper industries. Although there are numerous pottery and enamelware plants in Texas, and large rubber and paper industries; all of the kaolin used in these plants is from other States, There are two known occurrences of kaolin in Texas, namely, the Leakey deposit in Real County and the several deposits of the Medley district in southern Jeff Davis County. An investigation of the Mueller kaolin deposit in the Medley district was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Following an examination of this deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by diamond core drilling.

Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. One of the requirements for the successful waging of war is an unlimited supply of iron ore. In the spring of 1941 the demand for iron ore was expected to exceed the supply. This was particularly so in the case of high-grade lump iron ore, essential to the open-hearth process of making steel. The bulk of Canada's iron ore was imported from the United States. At this time, Canada was making every effort to conserve United States funds for more vital purchases. For these reasons, the development of Canadian iron ore resources became of prime importance. Several companies undertook investigations and one of these examined the old Josephine deposit. Location The Josephine property is in the district of Algoma, in the Michipicoten area of the Sault Ste. Marie mining division of Ontario. It is 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and 20 rail-miles east of Michipicoten harbour, on lake Superior (see Figure 1). Transportation in the area is furnished by the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay railway. The Michipicoten branch of this line passes within a mile of the Josephine mine. Michipicoten harbour provides a port through which iron ore is currently shipped. Power in the area is supplied by the Great Lakes Power Company, with generating plants on Michipicoten river, on Montreal river, and on St. Mary's river at Sault Ste. Marie. A series of transmission lines cover the district and one of these is connected to the Josephine mine by a 3 ½-mile branch line. History The Josephine property was staked by Alois Goetz in 1899. Before the claims could be recorded, the township in which they are located was given to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay railway as part of a land grant. As a result, the ownership remained in dispute until August 24th, 1906, when a settlement was arbitrated by the Honourable Frank Cochrane. His ruling is interesting and is quoted in part.

"The Soudan Mine was Minnesota’s first iron mine, operating from 1882 to 1962. The mine was donated to the State of Minnesota in 1963 and became a state park in 1965. The mine discharge contains elevated copper and cobalt concentrations and has been treated with an ion-exchange-resin-based system since 2009. The system includes flow equalization tanks, bag and cartridge filters, a carbon tank and two commercial ion exchange tanks. Although effective, the system’s high cost, inefficient removal of suspended material and substantial maintenance have been ongoing and troublesome issues.In November 2012, we initiated a pilot test using a peat-based sorption media. This media is produced from raw reed-sedge peat through a patented, low-temperature carbonization process that produces a hardened granular sorption material. The granules are uniform, have high hydraulic conductivity and maintain the high metal affinity of natural peat.Mine water was pumped through the peat-based sorption media without any pretreatment. Copper input concentrations typically ranged from 30 to 60 µg/L but increased to a high of 364 µg/L in the summer of 2013. Since startup, more than 60 million L (16 million gal or 32,000 bed volumes) have been treated, with average removal rates of 75 percent for particulate copper and 60 percent for dissolved copper. Backwash is required at about 4,000 bed volumes, but with a combination of air sparging and high-flow backwash, the suspended material is removedfrom the media.One tank of the peat-based sorption media was found to remove copper similarly to the first four components of the existing system. By reducing size and complexity, reductions in operation and maintenance costs are possible. A comparison of the estimated costs indicate that replacing the four initial components with the single media tank has the potential to reduce annual operating costs by more than half from around $163,000 to $70,000."

This report describes results of beneficiation and smelting studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on chromite samples from the Emma Belle and Seiad Creek prospects in the Seiad Creek area, northern California. Samples were chosen from this area because the ore is typical of disseminated types that represent a sizable domestic reserve. The two samples were similar in composition, and both responded in like manner to gravity beneficiation. As the ore was banded, considerable coarse gangue was rejected in laboratory sink-float from a minus-3/4-inch, plus-6-mesh fraction without excessive chromium loss at a medium density of 3.32. An average of 85.6 percent of the chromium was recovered in the sink product, which analyzed 35 percent chromic oxide (Cr203). Tabling yielded concentrates containing 49 percent or more Cr203; however, recoveries, ranged from only 33 to 45 percent. A combination of tabling and electrostatic separation of the table middlings showed that the chromium recovery could be increased to about 73 percent; the composite concentrate averaged 53 percent Cr203.

T HE theory of hardening by heat treatment was, as usual, the most actively discussed phase of metal working theory and in spite of the fact that it is now ten years since the dispersion theory was proposed by Messrs. Merica, Waltenberg, and Scott, it still retains a dominating influence. It is being increasingly recognized. however, that in its simplest form, that is, the purely mechanical effect of very fine crystallites distributed through a groundmass, it is distinctly in- adequate. To explain the observed facts we are obliged to assume some well-defined intermediate stage between supercooled solid solution and conglomerate, however fine be the particles of the latter. This intermediate has been inferred by Gaylor and Preston to be "the rejection of the atoms of the dissolved metal from the lattice of the solid solution accompanied by the possible formation of molecules."' Perhaps this may well be designated as the formation of supersaturated solid solution. Some very definite evidence of such an inter- mediate stage has been found in the hardening of steel where it appears that the very hard martensite may be considered as a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron. The X-ray spectrometry of drastically quenched steel shows a tetragonal lattice whose parameter changes by tempering at 100" until it coincides with the cubic lattice of iron.? The same gradual change of the tetragonal to the cubic lattice has been observed by Sekito when esamining layers on increasing depth below the surface of a quenched carbon steel.

"The McClean uranium deposits are located 11 km west northwest of the Rabbit Lake Mine. Their average grade is 1.8 % U3O8 , and they contain 6. 350 tonnes of uranium oxide in seven pods of variable grade and mineral assemblage. They are hosted by both basal Athabasca Group and the regolith developed on the underlying crystalline basement. The major mineral facies are: sulphide, arsenide, 'bleached', and hematite, with the important uranium minerals being coffinite, uraninite and pitchblende. Abundances of carbon and sulphur isotopes are consistent with their derivation from pyritic graphite in basement gneisses. Isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen suggest equilibration at temperatures of about 200°C. Ar39/ Ar40 age determination of illite associated with ore suggest mineralization began about 1300 m.y. ago and that significant alteration had ceased by about 1170 m.y. ago though Pb/ U data suggest the deposits continued to evolve into the Mesozoic.IntroductionThe McClean deposits lie on the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan where they are part of a cluster of uranium deposits lying west of Wollaston Lake (Fig. 1). The general stratigraphy is schematically portrayed in Figure 2 which emphasizes that mineralization is hosted by both the Athabasca Group and the underlying regolith and also that the deposits are preserved at depth and have not suffered from preand post-Pleistocene weathering and erosion. This circumstance, combined with their simple shape and the presence of seven separate zones of mineralization (pods) allows a description, based on over 450 fully cored drill holes, to be made of the wide variation in chemistry, grade, alteration patterns and position relative to the sub-Athabasca Group unconformity. Ar39 / Ar40 age determinations have been made of illites associated with regolith, Athabasca Group and mineralization and studies are in progress on C, S, 0 and H isotopes of mineralized material and host rocks. Only some of these data have been published; Brummer et al., (1981); Golightly et al., (1982); Bray et al., (1982); and Saracoglu et al., (1983). The only other published data on McClean geology are by Tremblay (1982, 1983)."

The strike of the Canadian asbestos miners entered its seventh month with increasing signs of early termination. Both unions are in the midst of heavy negotiations with management, and an optimistic industry source predicted that work would resume by October 1. Recession recovery in some segments of the asbestos manufacturing industry is being impeded by lack of fibers, CADMIUM - On September 9, St. Joe Minerals Corp. reduced the price of cadmium metal to $2.75 per pound. The producer price bad been uniformly quoted at $3.00 per pound since June 26, 1975. Subsequently, Amax, Inc. and National Zinc Co. reduced their prices to $2.50 per pound. By mid-September all five U.S. cadmium producers were marketing the metal at $2.50 per pound.

In 1991, roofbolts were introduced as a primary support for inseam retreat longwall entries at CBDC's Phalen Colliery. Increasing mine depth (+550 m) necessitated replacing conventional inseam steel sets in these entries because they were being severely damaged during wall retreat and subsequently causing gate end problems. Roofbolts had been used in the Sydney coalfield between 1949 and 1963 in room and pillar working, however, some concerns arose with using roofbolts as a primary support in long (2.2 - 3.4 km) single entry roadways. In order to alleviate these concerns, a phased approach was adopted whereby conventional steel densities remained along with roofbolts. The roofbolt design was such that the roofbolts would be the primary support and the steel sets would experience little or no loading. A detailed geotechnical monitoring program was developed by both CBDC and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratories technical staffs. The results of this monitoring were used to build-up confidence in roofbolts and subsequently reduce the steel set densities until eventually only roofbolts were used as a primary support. This paper will discuss briefly the phased introduction of rootbolts at Phalen Colliery and more specifically the development of geotechnical data collection and interpretation.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

Certain degrees of safety, economic, and financial risk are implicit in any mining operation. At Thabazimbi Mine, slope stability was one of the major sources of risk, largely due to data uncertainties. Consequently, a risk-based approach in slope design was followed. On 6 June 2015, a slope failure occurred in Thabazimbi Mine’s Kumba pit, involving approximately 65 million tonnes of rock failing into the pit and the valley below. Although the failed mass moved rapidly and resulted in a run-out distance of approximately 900 m, controls had been put in place to successfully evacuate all personnel. Risk assessment during the onset of failure supported the decision to not compromise the safety of personnel in any way, leading to unavoidable equipment loss. This contribution presents the failure as a case study in the context of a risk-based approach to slope design as well as the importance of implementing geotechnical controls to effectively manage slope instability risk. Furthermore, a comprehensive back-analysis was performed, on a fully constrained 3D model, utilising 3DEC software, to gain insights into the failure mechanism. In conclusion, lessons from the Thabazimbi slope failure are valuable as they demonstrate the importance of following a risk-based approach in slope design to effectively manage safety and financial risk in open pit mines.

Mining and mineral processing is expected by society and obliged by law to operate in an environmentally friendly fashion, minimising the impact on and avoiding damage to the environment. Substantial efforts by the industry, as well as by process and equipment designers have resulted in many innovative developments, which show that operating in an environmentally responsible manner can be achieved in a cost-effective way. This paper showcases five emerging equipment best practices in industry including installation examples. Flip-flow screening machines are proven worldwide in the dry classification of coal and other minerals, reducing the size of beneficiation plants whilst reducing energy, water demand and media consumption. They also allow the screening of wet/sticky materials not able to be sized using conventional screens. The belt press filter is a small fraction of the operating and capital cost of alternative dry tailings technologies. This gives operators who must dry their tailings a competitive advantage and makes such ægreenÆ operations much more sustainable. The filtercake is disposed with other plant rejects, eliminating the need for tailings dams to be constructed and thus also often increasing mine reserves. Mining applications include coal tailings, sand tailings, sinter plant waste and power station fly ash. Screen-scroll and vibrating centrifuges are widely used in the coal, potash and salt industries to dewater the product to low surface moistures. Inclined plate Lamella separators are used for toxic water clarification and/or sludge thickening in many downstream metal industries with the underflow often dewatered in a belt filter press. Such low cost, high capacity thickeners could also be used instead of conventional thickeners at smaller mines. The simple and reliable continuous washing upward flow (CWUF) sand filters have been used for treatment of waste water from coal preparation plants and steel works as well as in the worldwide production of potable water. The filtered waste water from mining processes can then either be reused or discharged from site. Other installations include cleaning mine water to prevent the blocking of dust suppression spray nozzles.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. "INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by halt townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 halt-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The Descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The Institute was privileged to receive an invitation from the Armaments Corporation of South Africa (Armscor) for members to visit one of their plants. As these are factories, the number of visitors who could be accommodated was limited. As the opportunity seldom arises to learn something of this very large industry, there was great interest among members and many were disappointed in not being able to go. Underwater mining The 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute will be held at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from 20th to 23rd October, 1985.

Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. "INTRODUCTION In 1990, the uranium production of SDAG Wismut in East Germany was stopped. 45 years of inconsiderate destructive exploitation had scarred both landscape and nature. With the “Wismut law” which came into force in December 1991, the Federal Republic took responsibility of the remediation of the legacies from former uranium ore mining and milling in Saxony and Thuringia. A unique opportunity turned out in order to remove environmental damage, to enhance the life quality of the local population, to shape new landscapes and to advance the economic restart. (1) The results of nearly 25 years of remediation activity are evidence that this opportunity was used at all former SDAG (Sowjetisch-Deutsche Aktien-gesellschaft) Wismut sites. The reference project “Wismut“ has evolved into a joint project of all parties involved and radiates beyond the affected regions. This is particularly reflected by the Know-how transfer starting from Wismut and the increasing activities for third parties abroad.WATER MANAGEMENT AT WISMUT REHABILITATION Within the Wismut project, water management and conventional technical water treatment are by far the most cost-intensive long-term tasks of the remediation programme. Over the medium term, there is no viable alternative to the operation of active systems to catch and treat contaminated mine waters at the Ronneburg, Schlema, Königstein, Pöhla, Seelingstädt and Helmsdorf sites. Based on the status quo, this paper outlines the key issues of the Wismut GmbH water management strategy over the medium and long term. It is focused primarily on achieving protection goals for potentially impacted water bodies in the surroundings of Wismut sites and on optimising associated remediation expenditures as well as on creating the prerequisites for achieving low post-remedial care and maintenance or walk-away system status over the long term. (2) The applied mining practices during the active SDAG Wismut period have not been up to the high standards of modern mining operations and their requirement to leave former production premises and deposited residues in a condition that was not only physically but also chemically stable. Rather the emission of mine and seepage waters laden with high acidity, metal and salt content is a frequent corollary and difficult legacy of historic mining and processing operations (4, 5). As a consequence, the control or mitigation, respectively, of environmental impacts associated with contaminated mine waters ties up enormous public resources worldwide (6, 7)."
